[GUIDE] What to do if my phone doesn't turn on?

I posted this thread because I couldn't find a similar one and I thought would be useful. I would keep adding on to this when I find new information.
Disclaimer: This list is NOT exhaustive and there might be other ways to unbrick your phone. Also, I cannot guarantee that these methods would work for you.
With android around for so long, there are many developers out there who are constantly trying to get "more" out of their devices. However, one constant problem about tweaking our devices is that we have a chance of "Bricking" it.
So the most common question is:
What do I do when I brick my phone?
Before we start, let me explain what is a brick, and when would a brick happen.
What is a brick?
Altering the operating system of your phone in a way that causes the mobile device to become unusable results in a bricked, or inoperable phone. Bricking of phone can be done by a Hacker and via one or more update.

Examples of an error when booting:
1. Phone doesn't turn on
2. Phone turns on, but stuck at the boot screen
3. Phone turns on, and shows this screen:

"lightbox_previous": "Previous",

}
4. Phone turns on, and shows recovery screen
5. Phone turns on, and shows download mode
6. There are other instances, but the general idea is: If your phone doesn't boot to the home screen, it's an error.
When will I encounter these errors with my phone?
You might encounter errors with your phone when you:
- Root
- Flash any rom without proper wipe
- Flash incompatible kernels
- Interrupt a flashing process
- the list goes on and on...
So now we come to the important part, how do I get my phone to boot up?
There are different solutions to each problem, so please diagnose the problem first, then read on.
If your phone is stuck in a boot loop (stuck at boot screen):
1. Wipe Data and Cache
2. Wipe Dalvik Cache
3. Wipe Battery Stats
4. Reboot
**NOTE: If you didn't have CWM flashed, then just wipe data and cache via stock Samsung Recovery and try rebooting.
5. If the above doesn't work, flash a new rom.
If your phone can't get into recovery,
Try to go into download mode (holding Vol Down + Home + Power buttons).
Download mode looks like this:
If you could get into download mode, or you're already in download mode when you boot your phone, flash a stock rom through ODIN. The detailed guide can be found here:
http://droidangel.blogspot.sg/2011/08/samsung-galaxy-mini-s5570xxkpk-android.html
A list of stock roms and downloads can be found here:
http://yagyagaire.blogspot.sg/2012/01/official-samsung-firmwares.html#.UIELBE3MiSo
**Note: When you boot up your phone and it shows this screen, it's another form of download mode. All you have to do is to flash stock rom via ODIN, with the guide above this:
If you couldn't get into download mode or recovery mode, read on...
Let me warn you first, at this point, your phone is probably bricked.
So... What if my phone doesn't get into download/recovery mode?
1. Try doing a USB jig.
2. Try using RIFF JTAG.
USB Jig
To do this, you gotta have a device that looks like this:
You could buy one on eBay or Amazon, or simply go to the neighbourhood phone repair shop and borrow one. Or, you could lend one from someone near you, to find a list of people near you who have USB jig and are willing to lend, click here.
Alternatively, you could make a home-made one by following this guide:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKRrTZayRxU
**Note: The title states Galasy S II but it's proven to be working on our device too.
To do a USB jig, follow this guide:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=METM3teG5rI
RIFF JTAG
Go to this website and follow instuctions:
http://www.jtagbox.com/jtag-news/ri...-mini-gts5570i-unbrick-boot-repair-supported/
If all else fails, you can only send your phone to Samsung Repair, and remember: Play Dumb!
Don't mention anything about rooting, flashing, odin, etc. Don't say you dropped it in water either, your warranty doesn't cover accidental damage. Just tell them your phone suddenly became like that...
Special Cases:
Case #1
Your phone shows a black screen when you turn it on, but ODIN detects it. When you try flashing stock rom, it gets stuck at "setup connection...".
Solution: Your phone is bricked. Do a USB jig by following the method above. It might help you, but not 100%.
Case #2
Your phone shows a whitish screen, and ODIN detects it.
Solution: This is probably caused by a bad flash, or you flashed a rom that isn't intended for your phone. Just flash the correct stock rom via ODIN it would work (not for all cases).
If the above fails, you could reply to this post or PM me for help.

Yes they would be able to tell. Our devices have a bin counter that increases every time u flash a custom rom or something like that. However, some Service Centres wouldn't bother to check and then they would just change the motherboard for you.

Yes there is a way. Just flash stock rom via ODIN that would remove your CWM.

Play dumb and tell them you don't know anything about whatever they are saying. Usually they won't check they'll just ask you if you dropped it in water (say no to that your warranty doesn't cover accidental damage). If they really ask, just say u don't know whats a bin counter and u've been using stock rom all along lol. That's what I did once and it worked.

Hi Thanks for the article. My phone is in strange mode. It can enter into download mode but when I try to boot or try to enter in recovery mode it keeps on flashing samsung logo and does not proceed. The samsung logo just comes and goes and it keeps on. There is currently no way to go to home screen or go to recovery mode. Samsung service center people said motherboard is gone. I think if motherboard would have gone my phone would never enter into download mode. Can you help me?
If your phone start in downloading mode and ODIN detects it flash a stock rom trought Odin and it should work. In the first post you will find the guide for flashing stocks rom.

Did your phone get stuck on bootscreen after installing stock-rom via odin? or after installing custom-rom via CWM recovery? or get stuck when you are installing stock-rom via odin (I mean you can't finish installing stock-rom via odin) ?
=================================================================
First Case =
If your phone get stuck on bootscreen after installing stock-rom via odin, please try to pull out your battery for about 15 minutes..
after 15 minutes, put your battery in and TURN ON your phone..
If it still get stuck on bootscreen, try to boot into recovery mode (by pressing power+home button)..
make FULL WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe chace + wipe dalvik chace)..
then reboot system now..
If it still get stuck, you can try to flash it AGAIN via ODIN..
========================================
Second Case =
If your phone get stuck on bootscreen after installing custom-rom via CWM recovery, please try to pull out your battery for about 15 minutes..
after 15 minutes, put your battery in and TURN ON your phone..
If it still get stuck on bootscreen, try to boot into recovery mode (by pressing power+home button)..
make FULL WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe chace + wipe dalvik chace)..
then reboot system now..
If it still get stuck, you can try to install your custom-rom AGAIN via CWM recovery..
boot into recovery and make FULL WIPE (wipe data/factory reset + wipe chace + wipe dalvik chace)..
choose zip from sd card (make sure that you put the custom-rom file zip in sd-card directory /sdcard/here),
install and wait until finish and then reboot system now..
If you still get stuck, try to install your custom-rom AGAIN via CWM recovery, but IN THIS TIME you must make full wipe twice, BEFORE and AFTER installing custom-rom and then reboot system now..
- reboot into CWM recovery
- make full wipe
- choose zip from sd card
- wait until installing finish/complete
- make full wipe again
- reboot system now
========================================
Third Case =
If your phone get stuck when you are installing stock-rom via odin (I mean you can't finish installing stock-rom via odin),
please make sure that :
- your computer did not installed Samsung Kies application, I think it may interfere your installing stock-rom process, so please un-install it first..
- you have installed the right or true Samsung USB driver..
- your micro-usb cable is support for your phone
- your battery phone in 90%
- if your firmware doesn't in one package, make sure that you choose the right file, I mean :
- BOOT = APBOOT_XXX
- PHONE = MODEM_XXX
- PDA = CODE_XXX
- CSC = GTS5570_CSC_XXX
-and don't take off your USB cable untill the installation is complete, "PASS"
I think that's all, it just based on my experience..
i realy need your help with gt-s5570

Hard Brick vs Bricked

I have a samsung 5830D and all signs are pointing to it being hard bricked can someone tell me if this is the case? I dont think that its a hard brick as once I had my phone hard bricked and I couldnot go even to download mode so its a softbrick, try flashing with Odin and if in vain nothing can make your phone come to life, Samsung store is ur solution
I believe this isn't a hard brick, as on a samsung device you would need have to lose the ability to get into download mode to call it a hard brick.

tha only thing that u can save ur phone is to flash full package not only one package coz tha main rison why it kips boot looping is that the bootloader has the iissue and never been fixed by only one package..try to flash full package with APPBOOT and it will continue booting..

Flash DDKQ8 Rom to your phone and you will be good to go ig its a soft brick
If you can get into download mode, you never need loose hope. I wondered if people wouldn't mind me hijaking with a related issue. My Ace is, for all intents and purposes, hard bricked (about a year ago, I had no idea what I was doing flashing roms so it's well deserved). However, I found out today that it can speak to my work computer, and xp even downloaded the drivers for me. No response on the screen, but booting into "recover mode" gives 2 lights on Odin. Anyone heard of this before?
Had a long time looking round the forums, and this is actually about the closest thread for me.

bricked....

Hi so I was trying to use CF to root my phone and ended up screwing it somehow and bricked. I thought I'd followed the instructions well enough but I obviously did something wrong. Now my phone is stuck saying it needs to recover with Kies. This is my first Samsung phone but I'm not new to Android.
I tried installing the stock firmware through ODIN but everytime I flash it gets to installing the system ext4 and fails. I also wasn't able to recover using Kies(not even sure how you use it tbh).
If anyone could help me it would be mucho appreciated. I'm pretty pissed at myself right now.

Your phone is NOT bricked. If it was the screen would not even go on.
Have you tried going into recovery mode (VolumeUP/VolDown/PowerButton)
and once in Recovery Mode do a factory reset or Data Reset forgot what the
exact wording is in the stock recovery.
If you flashed twrp recovery it's ok too, just select "factory reset".
After doing that the phone should no longer display anything about Kies.
If you get to the twrp recovery screen you should be able to flash a stock
rooted rom without any issues.
If all you get is the stock recovery screen then you should be able to odin
flash the official Samsung Note 4 kitkat 4.4.4 NJ7 firmware which you may
need to download the firmware from http://SamMobile.com if you don't
already have it. (be sure you have the correct firmware for the Note 4 N910T).
Be 100% sure that the phone is FULLY POWERED DOWN before going
into Download Mode to avoid odin errors and issues.
Good luck!
Thanks man. I had tried Odin at my office and nothing doing.
Got home took my time and was real calm about things and voila. May have been an md5 issue with the firmware file. Just relieved I didn't have to RMA it.

Can you check for the file with md5 before you flash from your phone? I forgot where to dig for this info.
All I I have done before is on my cook rom file, I just open it with WinRAR and test for error. If no error, then its good.
On my Home PC I have a program that will put a check mark next to a file if it matches the md5. I also have Winrar at home.
I was just using the default Windows zip program and I have had problems with that and installers/roms in the past.
The only other things I did different were I removed the SD card and installed the drivers before plugging my phone in instead of letting Windows download them automatically.
I also removed the battery after I left work so it was out of the phone for a couple of hours.
The final thing I did was calm down lol after the initial shock of seeing a softbricked screen on my brand new phone.
I'm all rooted now with TWRP and running Hyperdrive so it's all smooth sailing from this point forward.
You should check md5 on phone once you done transferred to phone from PC
BAD ASS NOTE 4

please help note 8 bricked

so im on oreo, i decide to downgrade to bra8 to upgrade to a newer version of oreo, i odin back, but while downgrading firmware my cat drops mt laptop and interupted it, now its bricked to the error occured while upgrading software please use smart switch mergency recovery, i did that but it says my device is not support for initalzing to rstore it, im guessing samsung removed that feature completely, is there any way i can fix this!??
No problem, start the update with Odin again. You just have to press vol down + power 7 sec and put the cell phone back in download.
Vol. Down+ bixby+power, when start vol up
When using emergency recovery be sure to use capital letters for any letters in your serial number. Good luck with your soft brick.

a bit late reply but nevertheless for others who have the same problem like you and me, just solved it. so what I did: after my odin update was interrupted accidentally my phone also showed please use smart switch emergency recovery screen. downloaded smart switch but could not emergency recover (unsupported device problem - seems to me smart switch could not see my phone properly). after searching the web (that's how I found this thread ) and not finding any solutions i tried different tricks and found out that odin sees my phone but cant initialize firmware update since phone was not in download mode (after bixby+dwnload btn+pwr and pressing continue, the screen returned to please use smart switch emergency recovery screen) but I did not give in and did the following to successfully update my firmware:
1. start odin (place respective files in respective fields of your firmware), you wont be able to initialize the process while please use smart switch emergency recovery screen is shown;
2. connect your phone to odin and press bixby+dwnload btn+pwr combination the way to see options - volume down to shut down the phone (but you wont be able to shut it down it will return to that terrible screen) and press volume up to continue, after pressing the continue button you will hear that connection sound and this time you will be able to initialize the process and update your firmware.
good luck everybody on restoring your soft bricked Samsung devices (mine was unlocked note 8 (SM-N950U1).

Note 9 bootloop out of nowhere!!

So let me give you a little background first. I was at my brother's house recording him dunk in superslowmo. All of a sudden, my phone freezes. After about 2-5 mins I decide To hold power +volume down and the phone goes black and goes to the "Samsung Galaxy note 9 secured by knox" screen and does a infinite reboot to that screen. The phone will not go into recovery mode BUT will go into Download Mode. I tried letting the phone completely drain and then trying it with no success.
I do have AT&T protection on my device but the only thing they will do is replace it which I'm trying to avoid being that I have pictures I want to extract from the phone.
So to my question(s)
1) if I flash latest version of firmware from sammombile will I lose my pictures? (Trying to avoid loss of pics)
2) can I use a MacBook to do the reflashing or does it have to be windows?
Please and thx to all that respond!!!
Once in download mode hold volume down and power to see if phone boots up. If you reflash with Odin use home_csc so it does not wipe your data. If you do get to recovery do not do a wipe, everything you have saved to phone storage will be gone. See if you can get to device storage by connecting to computer once your in download mode or recovery. If so just move all important files to computer then you can use Odin to flash firmware.

1) while flashing in Odin, the CSC file determines if your phones data is erased or not during the flash. In order to retain personal data, flash HOME_CSC..
2) you can use Jodin to flash on a Mac https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/dl/?id=20803

Okay I ditched the macbook idea and I have my aunt's computer in from of me.
When installing the firmware.. Am I going for the latest USA version which is from like last week... Or do I do the ATT firmware from Nov 2018 and do the OTA update?

I'm going to try that now. Just look at what version of Windows I have and it's 8.1... does that make a difference of why the drivers won't install ?
This is the error message when I try "mss installwizard for samsung usb driver for mobile phones failed "

When I was installing smart switch it told me to "disconnect my device from pc"( which it read AS A Samsung phone)
But when it's all downloaded It just says connect device again but when I do the computer makes its sound and then nothing.
If I'm in device manager and I plug in my note 9 it pops up as 'sdm845' but says there are no drivers installed.
I uninstalled the Samsung drivers (even though it says failed) and I tried again and it said fail to install again

Okay if anyone Is still reading this.. If I switch up and use my Father's Macbook instead, does anyone know the necessary steps to continue on with the process? And keep in mind the state of my phone is in a boot loop and only goes to the download screen
I was just doing the whole chatting thing with a Samsung representative and they advise me to go to a place near me to do the reflashing.
but still the thing that's bothering me is that my PC isn't installing the drivers regardless.
without even thinking about my phone connected , I should be able to go on Samsung's website and download the drivers right off the website but when I do I get the "mss installwizard for samsung usb driver for mobile phones failed "
Install this drivers, reboot pc, open odin as administrator, connect phone in download mode.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this ? I seem to have a similar issue, where phone is in a continuous boot loop. It stays on powered by android screen for few secs and then restarts.
I cannot enter recovery mode, but can get into download mode. Have flashed via ODIN few times successfully, but same condition prevails.
Safe to assume MoBo is fried ?
Could be that the main storage in the motherboard is corrupted, which needs to be reformatted entirely.

Just a heads up, Google photos has free backups up to 15gb in full quality, or unlimited backup of 1080 for pics and videos. So at least from now-> forward a hardware issue won't ever cause you to lose pics again. You just need to open the app and setup backups.
