I have been going back and forth for a bit on wether or not to post this thread, but I think it is only fair for us testers and to post our thoughts and concerns. Mods, I apologize for posting a political thread in a technical forum, but this seems to be an applicable and thread worthy discussion So here it goes:
If anyone other than me (and the 5 trillion noobs on this site) have been following the 'black revolution', does anything seem funny about this whole situation with JJ leaving? First, he goes to htc-devs claiming that he refuses to deal with all of the stupid questions and double posts. This is understandable, and I would not be posting this thread if the situation had stopped there. However, the htc-devs forum had a spring-up new users when they found out JJ had moved (including me), but then ubruptly died off after he moved to 4winmoble. Coincidence...I think not.
Even though I personally think that black3.x is not as stable as 2.5, I highly regard JJ roms and I think that he is one of the top developers out. This post is not trash his work. However, I registered for 4wnmobile (grrrr....again) and checked it out to find that:
Is it me or is this forum slow as F***?
Is is me or are there more ads than posts?
Isnt it convenient that a certain developer got his own sub-forum (unlike the other forums where his work was previously posted)
Is it me or upon checking this forum do you see the same noob posts that were seen in xda?
So, my question is...
If our highly regarded (not being sarcastic) chef has moved due to the noobular influx, why did he not stay at htc-devs where he had mod control do delete these posts? Why did he perpetuate his problem by going to 4winmob?
Has JJ gone "hollywood"?
I have no idea....
$$$$$$$$!!!!
excuse me.... must be my turrets acting up again...
Seriously... perhaps JJ can elaborate.
at least your turrets only spits out a sentence. mine spits out 5 paragraphs
I usually stay out of these threads but I mean honestly, who gives a ****? let him do what he wants...
I see it like this:
Everyone has their choices. The ones you choose make who you are.
I personnally keep from postng as much as possible, not to be in the swarm of questions and be reffered to as a "noob". I have read and read the forums to upgrade my devices and fix them when I screw them up. If everyone would just read it would help out a lot.

Agreed. Let this subject die a quiet death.
There are plenty of us left who enjoy this forum and the work that everyone puts in. Chefs, people who share knowledge and answer posts. Noobs are mainly a problem when more experianced people get frustrated by them and start flame wars.
Just ignore them.
XDA still rocks.
Precisely... People come and go, it's natural progression... =)

Hi Slueth,
[sarcasm]
Great moderation by the way in the hermes forum.....
[/sarcarsm/]
No NOT $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
i was given my own sub forum which i can completely moderate. I have also got two more moderators with me.
What is this crap about "Hollywood" posted by the member who started the thread? Get real dude, if u dont like then move on.
I also decided that having a general chit chat area on 4WM for people to get to know one another as well as to blow off steam- it is a good idea as it will help keep the tech discussions clean.
Now why dont u all just quit it,,,, for goodness sakes,,,, u are all making a big deal of this.
Yes the site has advertisements as 4winmobile.com is also a comprehensive product review site - WHO CARES!!!!! xda-devs has adds also.
Get over it and move on.....
And by the way, i dont make any money from 4WM - incase you were all wondering..... I just moved there as having control of my own forum seems like an excellent idea since MODERATION on this FORUM stinks!!!!!
Maybe if admin here gave users the power to moderate their threads things will be different. But WHO CARES now - MOVE ON!
Sick of this site, full of,,,, as has been put many times ****WITS!
@Peezy

Yes it has been slow at times DUE TO THE DDOS attacks - gee im wondering where they are coming from.
Really professional members on XDA-developers.
JJ, I thought you had your own forum to moderate? I have to say, I have healthy amount of respect for what you've done for the community with the ROMs that you've cooked. In fact, I used to run Black 2.5 on my 8525. I've noticed one of the complaints of people moved forums away from XDA was that that there are too many people posting useless messages like, "WOW~ cool. Downloading now! Thanks man~" Which is strange... Because I thought that was in-line with the spirit of the community. But regardless, I'd like to say thank you for your hard work.
But as you've said repeated, it's time for you to move on. It's too bad that you were frustrated with the moderation in this forum. As forums become popular, they tend to attract lot of n00bs (like myself)...and considering most moderators (like yourself) do not do this full time, I'm sure it's not an easy task. I do, along with many users, appreciate all the hard work. Even if they are not perfect...since I'm not the one who's doing the hard work...I can try to give bit of suggestions here and there...but I really can't complain. I really wish things stayed here on the XDA forums. But too bad things came down to this. But yes...it's time for the community to move on.
I, for one, will stay on XDA. I guess that's my choice. I feel like community is what we make of it. We can always uproot and start a new one...but doesn't change that fact that we owe something to our roots. I've learned everything about my 8525 on this forum. I've never posted much...but I always read and read. It's just in my nature. I figured things out on my own with all the helpful suggestions from other members. So far, I've managed to not brick mine. So I do feel certain sense of loyalty. Correct me if I'm wrong...didn't you get started on these boards as well?
I agree that you've given back to the community infinitely more than I. But I'm still part of this community...and I think I have the right to say that your posts only tarnish your image and past accomplishments on these boards...and bring everybody down. Now that you are a moderator...I've read few posts on your boards about how you'll ban a user for a single misstep. Good luck in that. I guess that's how you get rid of n00bs like me. But being elitist can take you so far. It's just a phone. Yup. A phone. People will drop off as they move away from Hermes and get new phones. Then we are all back to being n00bs again...including you.
Good luck with your board.

I'm going to guess that by the lack responses that I'm the first to blink, take a deep breath, and decide to say wow, or ouch. Wow for the last post and ouch for it as well. Whoever you are JELLYCOW, that's the most eloquent, constructively insightfull, and conclusively solid summary I think I've ever read in my life. Thank you. Well said; Top Notch; Classy to say the least.
So to JJ... Keep it real yo. As devolpers go, You're work is stellar, and I'm addicted. I went Black... and the only back I ever will go, is gonna be XDA Devs... I started with my Blue Angel and followed the phones as they came out. But my Hermes... it's heart & soul are from you. It's one of the many handsets that run your OS's, past present & yet to come. Keep doing your ****, we all gotta be good at something. This is what you do... you do it well. Your fans and testers, we will follow... Thanks bro.. Peace
NOW WILL SOMEBODY GET JELLYCOW A DAMN PUBLIC RELATIONS JOB WHILE YOU CAN STILL AFFORD THEM... CAUSE THAT ONE IS GONNA GO FAR... THAT LAST POST IS THE PROOF.
Now i'm going to suck down half a bottle of Hershy's Chocolate Syrup, have a glass of Almond Milk, and tuck my hermes into bed with me so it can wake me up in the morning... cause I'm passing out!!!

Well said
Agreed, well said JellyCow. I'm also a Noob, read daily and post infrequently and an avid Black 2.5 user. No question at all that JJ is very talented and deserves a lot of credit...though I think some people go overboard with the brown nosing. He kind of reminds me of some of my coder friends. Extremely talented but volatile. Sometimes extremely talented or tech savvy people just are not equipped with the personality or patience to deal with noobs. Often that only comes with maturity and age. Either way..try not to take yourself too seriously and remember that you started doing this for FUN.
Please, could someone move this PRECIOUS thread full of WONDERFULL non-requested advices to the off-topic section?
... I'm trying to read about WM6 ... thanks!
N1kko, L2readthruthreads.
Having downloaded most of JJs delicacies, I wondered what happened to him and his goodies.
This gives some closure.
All the best JJ.
Ok people, get over it.. like said before its the nature of the beast, people move on and new people take over... just because JJ is making a decision to move on doesnt mean that other people will stop cooking. Its not like this is the first time that a chef/developer has left to have a board they can moderate on due to frustrations from other members.
And who cares what his motivation to move on is?!? i mean honestly?!? JJ is going to do whats best for JJ, he is a big boy and can do what he wants. Its not like he is disappearing or quitting cooking, just moving. He was kind enough to let everyone know where he is going so you can join him, but that doesnt mean you have to abandon XDA either.. everyone has the freedom of choice, so make a choice and quit complaining.
Also i have had many conversations with JJ, and i like JJ, i personally dont want to see him go, but i also understand his frustration. This frustration is a double edged sword.. On one hand we have a developer that is good for the board, cooking roms, etc.. On the other hand we had a frustrated developer that was being abusive to noobs and other members which was making the boards harder to moderate...
JJ, i have an amazing amount of respect for you, and you know that, your a great guy and i do consider you a friend personally, but from a moderator standpoint in regards to the poor moderation; you were part of the problem just as much as the st00pid n00b questions that frustrated you.
With all that being said, i wish you well and hope to have future conversations with you!
Well, I cant say that the backlash was not expected, especially from JJ. I think he has every right to explain his concerns, and I am happy that he did. Again, for people who dont know how to FULLY read a post, I respect JJ's work and equally respect his talent as a developer. My reasoning for even posting this thread (sorry again mods for not posting in 'off-topic') is to give US tester a chance to air out our concerns.
We spend a LOT of time reading and learning how to get the best out of our devices. We pride ourselves in being memebers of this great site, and we pride the work that is published here. We all know that there are some problems with the noobs, and I agree with you shogunmark that this is just natural progression. What is NOT, however, is our ability to deal with it. We have all flamed before, and for those of you who have taken time to even ponder if there is a better solution, I thank you.
Im not here to flame JJ, that would be stupid seeing that I am currently using his ROM. I posted this thread to stir up the pot, and also to address our 'roots'. To speak out for us loyal xda-followers. I have once thought about finding another home, and I'm sure most of us have thought that too. I feel stupid for even attempting to follow JJ around the world for his stuff, and again I'm sure some of you feel the same way too.
The fact of the matter is that I started here, and this is where I am gonna stay. I thank all of you who share the same sense of passion and resolve to make sure that we keep xda the best site around!
It's my belief that this needed to be aired out. Thus the reason for my somewhat tongue-in-cheek initial post.
XDA developers forums are having issues not because of the way we run this board but because we're currently offering WM6 while the rest of the world is still running WM5.
History repeats itself. Have a look through the archives and you'll see astounding similarities when XDA was first to release WM5 while the rest of the world was still running 2003.
We will never silence the voice of a n00b here.
WDF is up with retarded people moving on from small nokia's to the fuze and other ppc phones? They have no idea what they're doing! I mean come the fk on! One guy doesn't know how to transfer ringtones from his storage card to his /windows folder! I was just on the aee tee n tee forums. I mean FFS! Don't buy something you are not capable of handing! Is the world full of that many retarded/stupid people? They buy something that they are not fully capable of understand/using and then they complain about how bad it is. People are such idiots..
LOL! I've been thinking the same thing. I always thought I had the best of the best, which included all the extras I've got on it. But, when I see a f'n 12 year old girl T-X-T'n her mutha f***'n BFF on her brand new Touch Pro, I say WTF!!!!
I will make a general statement here....
People should be tested and then licensed before they are allowed to breed.
I HATE seeing people with expensive electronics... THAT THEY DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE!
Whether it be a Diamond, or even a Touch, it just isn't right. Especially like MacBooks, MacBook Pros, Vaios... ugh. "How do I install an app???" GAH!

I don't agree with you and think that really you are just fed up with the noobs asking (in our opinion) questions that have rather simple answers just because they didn't take the time to search for the answer themselves. We have all been NOOBS at one time and had to figure out how to use our devices ourselves one way or the other. I myself only moved to a WM device a year ago (Previously had a Nokia 6620). The biggest difference was that I did tons of reading, research and soon discovered that there was so much more my device could do and learned how to customize by device. The point is, Everyone who gets a new device has to learn how to use it somehow. We just have to have some patience and try to help them learn how to use these forums so that they can teach themselves. It doesn't serve any purpose to be rude and call all these new WM device owners "retards" "Stupid" "Idiots", or to assume that they don't know how to handle these devices. They are still learning as we all did at one point.
Really if you are that annoyed with them then don't help them out. Just ignore the posts. Starting a thread like this doesn't serve to help this community. Isn't the purpose of this community suppose to be to help each other out though cooperation, sharing what we know about out devices with others, so that they can later help out other noobs themselves. It kind of defeats the purpose of this forum to constantly flame the noobs whenever they have a question and really if we don't try to help them by pointing them in the right direction, we are not being productive members of this community ourselves.
I'm not a programmer and will never pretend to be one or even understand anything about programming, so I can't contribute to this community that way; however, I can still contribute by helping other people understand the basics of their devices, solve / work around some of the quirks of their devices. You never know who you might be helping - one of these noobs my be a great programmer who after learning how to use their device and work around the devices short-commings, figure out how to improve on things themselves and share with the rest of us or write a really cool new app to share with the rest of us.
if you check out point # 8 and #9 by Administrator Peter Poelman here

this basically says it all.
8. Stay cool
Think of this as a on-line temple. A sacred place, dedicated to collaboration, learning and collective wisdom. Don't shout and try not to get angry. Maybe the world should adhere more to the basic filosofy of Internet protocol design: "Be strict about what you send, and liberal about what you receive". This forum has people from all countries, cultures and levels of mental maturity. This means that no matter what you're like, you'll have to adjust to people that are most definitely not like you. But on the other hand, try to be gentle with people, even in the event they're not gentle with you. It will gain you many reputation points if you help to keep the peace.
9. Help others if you can
OK, you can post that message now. If you see posts from others where you can help out, please do. This place exists because people are helping eachother, and even if you are relatively new to the matter, there's probably already quite a few people newer than you that would benefit from what you've learned. Don't be shy.
Take Care
Rod
@Rod.
No. Not really. I'm cool. I know we were all noobs at one time or the other, but I myself do not remember asking questions such as those. It could be some are naturally talented in technology. But I'm just saying, don't buy things that you don't know about. I tend to know things inside out before I even buy it.
i think what kraize is saying is bull at the end of the day we slag off noobs because they dont kno how to use the devices and wish they knew how to but because no one will tell them how theyll never become wiser if this goes on then the next generation of ppc user will be screwed because they been treat with contempt and told they shouldnt use these devices these people could be the next rom and software developers if they have the passion and apply them selves
so really they are not idiots theyve just been let down by a bunch of eletists who used to love teaching new things, but have lost the passion due to snootines or whatever

Hi Kraize. I fully agree with you that it is best to learn as much about a device before you buy it. Everyone should do this for anything they buy - Car, TV, Stereo, Computer, etc... I don't buy anyting until I have done some thorough research on the item - read reviews etc... to make sure it is a good device. I admit that I still didn't know much about WM devices when I purchased mine, only read reviews and certain web sites and asked lots of questions at the store where I purchased it. (but even the Rogers store clerks can't tell you about the full potential of these devices**They just don't know the devices they sell that well). I have to say though that if it wasn't for this forum, I wouldn't have learned as much about my device as I had. Keep in mind, I didn't start any NOOB threads asking silly questions. I joined in March 2008, but had been visiting this site since December 2007 after I purchased my device and learned as much as I could just searching, reading, searching more, reading and reading and reading and experimenting. I origianally only joined this community so that I could download some of the cool apps that have been developped by the other members here, but then found out that I can actually help others with what I had learned. To this date, I still have not started a single thread asking a question. I only PM'd one individual with one NOOB type question (asking about the difference between the touch Elf and touch Vogue ROM's ) as I could not find this information in my searches. (thanks to TheChampJT for answering this for me).
With this said - I won't say for sure that I won't ever feel the need to start a new thread asking a question, and I hope that if the time comes, people are understanding and either offer constructive answers or point me in the right direction.
What I would undertand ranting about, would be ranting about the ones who join this community and don't even try to find the answers for themselves or they do one search and don't dig deep enough to find their answers. Most answers are already out there but they just don't want to bother. I have spent many hours searching and finding my own answers, so I know it is possible and to see others not even try really burns me. I understand why they have questions, I had them myself, but for goodness sakes, if you have a new device and don't understand how to use it to it's full potential, then you have to do some reading and learn how to use it. Don't just immediately expect others to give you step by step instructions on what to do. Even if someone did do this, you wouldn't even understand how to use the device still since you didn't do it yourself.
It's all part of the adventure - learning how to maximize your device and understanding it and everyone deserves a chance to have this. Those who want an immediatlely easy to use and set up device - should get an IPhone
@ Everyone.
I'm trying to say here that I'm not dissing those who want to learn about the devices. I'm dissing those who are lazy and non-appreciative about it. Like a lot of other people, I've been a lurker for this site for a very long time. A couple years in fact. But those people that just ask things and wonder things without even reading the manual or typing it up on google dissappoint me. Btw. I've never really said anything about this site. I meant like on the AT&T forums. Too many people don't know a thing. I feel that CS and reps in stores feel the same way when retards come in asking how to turn on the phone (Beleive me, it has happened. In front me my eyes when I was buying the fuze).
hotrod pming is fine i have asked question by opening thread got flamed and understood but at the same time i was overjoyed with the few users who helped these peole dont need flaming they need teaching and its our right as winmo users to help them
I have a dream that one day this communtiy will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all mobiles are created equal."
I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former mokia owners and the sons of former motorola owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.
I have a dream that my three little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the OS on there mobiles or there ability to flash a rom but by being able to ask a question this wonderful of all sites and not get flames
I have a dream that one day, down in XDA, with its vicious Senior members, with its policy having its lips dripping with the words of "NOOB" and "READ THE WIKI" in such a nasty way. that this will all end and we can teach so they to can teach the ways on winmo
Or when you check the comments on freewarepocketpc before downloading and see tons of idiots asking for installation instructions. On the other hand WM phones are being marketed more and more as entertainment devices. It's not a f'n iPhone!
But a cab file? Google dammit! It's so damn simple!
Here's my rant (not quite sure if it's off topic, but it's ranting about stupid people):
Context: Our router failed. After a week of saying I was wrong and trying every random solution from the internet, my father finally admitted (claimed he knew it all along) that the router was broken and got us a new 110$ b/g/n router. We are 3 in the house and we only surf the web, no BitTorrent or anything fancy.
-Your father got a new router and it's working perfectly
-Nice!
-It's an N router
-But our computers don't support n, what's the point? There are 40$ routers that do the job
-Ours do, it's going to be way faster.
-Actually, I doubt so. Our router is already faster than the internet connection itself, there's a bottleneck.
-Yes but it's an n router, it's faster
-No, it can't be faster, we already topped the possible speed with our previous router. It's not like we were a dozen using the same connection to share file accross a football field. Another D-Link 524 would have done the job.
-You don't understand, it's faster, it's the new technology.

I understood your post, but am confused at the take on me referring to a REAL LIFE person. I think you should read my post again. No mention of xda users in it, in fact I've found myself to be helpful here, and hope there are some that would say the same.
Hi to All,
I am just wondering if anybody would be interested in joining a real event where we could meet somewhere in europe (Geneva? quite central and well served by cheap low-fare flights).
We could meet for one weekend, for example, and the meeting could be focused to BXD: Blackstone Xda Developers!
the entrance ticket is quite obvious: the touch HD with a non-official ROM!
...ad maybe somebody could develop some nice apps for BT identification?
I post this thread here because i think it should be a targeted event, not a general public happening. I wonder if we could also get some support from HTC or some local media, for example to rent a meeting place. Maybe we could even make a few contests and share some acknowledgements, but these are just few ideas.
...Please post your opinions!
EDIT: for your information, the poll is "in clear" e.g clicking on the numbers you can see individual names...of course, it is not binding!
...reserved for future use...
Sounds good,
But XDA is going down words...
So don't think I'm in the mood to meet some haters here....
Still a good idea.

Hi Xmoo,
we all have different opinions, i would be surprised if intelligent people would not understand each other point. I am not a moderator, but i didn't see any heavy personal offense - i know that some moderators are really very keen on that...

Well it's nothign personal.
I'm talking bout the no share issue.
I'm talking bout the android issue.
I'm talking bout the issue that many rom coockers are planning to leave.
One of my best friends and a long time member of XDA is planning to leave.
He is also a moderator... so.....
But on topic.
I would wanna go tho.
Geneva sounds good. So we can also see the car show
i like the idea, and had you suggested it a few years back then it would probably have been a big hit, but id like to echo the words above, some moderators have serious issues on here, the site is beginning to lose its self and its consistancy the admins dont appear to take any notice and let their mods run riot, even members seem to demand everything and give nothing,
Ive stopped my donations for my own reasons, i doubt i will continue unless things improve, at the mo id would rather support the individual programer than the whole community which is shame.
Still its a nice idea, but poor timing im afraid.

Off Topic: XDA is a container, as well as a real-life event. We are all civilized persons, and i am sure we could format different opinions into a real and pacific confrontations.
On topic: unfortunately, during the car show you cannot find lodging in the radius of 50 km....and becomes quite expensive.
I don't want to make any advertisement, but check for prices on www.easyjet.com from your place to Geneva and you'll realize it is one of the cheapest places to reach in Europe! Maybe London or Amsterdam are alternatives...

It is becoming quite a religious thing. To avoid what religions have been doing in the past, maybe an ecumenic event could help?
On my side, i moderate my signature - you are both right in saying that increasing the temperature doesn't help ourselves.

Baa forget London its cheaper for most folk to get to the south of france and stay a few nights then it is to fly an hour in London, besides Scotlands better!
i am new here since i ve own a blackstone.. but without xda? htc would be nothing for me..
i am very interested in a meeting.. also i am more a computer geek (admin of very independent pctreiber.net) i am really interested in learning and in xda stuff, i really like it here and appreciate a lot. i have no negative opinion about xda, for sure.
meeting:
would be really nice.. and a place to learn and meet.. like a wordcamp (wordpress)
Sounds like a ssplendid idea... Will definitely think about it

There may be issues right now, with many people disillusioned, but I like pzucchel's style in bringing forward something so positive to the table. That's only to be commended and can only help to recover the spirit that is seen to be lost! Good on ya!
Count me in and it's 100% if it is London
Nice Idea (creative and constructive) - we need people like you here pzucchel - good man!

Thanks Schooleydoo, i didn't know about it!
First of all, i would like to clarify that this is just a proposal for discussion and reflection. I personally hate "organizers" jumping on top of spontaneous events to get some personal benefits in terms of recognition and reputation, and i can tell you for sure i don't have any of these targets. But there is a large number of nice people here, and people that i respect a lot even if they have opinions different from mines....that i would like to meet in person.
(including Dutty if you really want to spell it out! He is a great cook, nobody should forget that he always shared a big number of his achievements by making cabs that were used by many other roms, freely...it must be just a big misunderstanding...right Dutty?)
...sorry, Back to topic:
Seeing the number of possible attendees after 12 hours of posting already of the order of 50, i would personally argue to restrict it to the blackstone device only, for three reasons:
1. Even if there is a lot to share technically, it could well be that we have never had contacts with people from other devices. and the interest in meeting will become restricted to social groups "per device".
2. It should be, in my opinion, mainly a social event. Technical matters can be easily discussed on the forum, in fact. And to be a useful social event we would need to be less than 100 or so, to be able to meet each other and say at least 2 words in 48 hours to people that we don't know a lot, but that we could know during our forum activity!
3. Parallel sessions is, in my opinion, a mistake. if we have a single session we could easily broadcast it on internet, and allow our asian and australian and american friends (those without CDMA support! ) to be part of the event. We are ONE community, don't forget! i would love to meet our viet friends also! but we could have webcam attendants, no?
In my opinion, the best number of attendes should be below 120. Of course it should be an OPEN event (Yes we share! ) , but we should try to target a manageable number, in terms of logistics and social aspects. Any other comments or opinions?
I alread imagine meeting a 15 year old guy with the badge "Schooleydoo"...
By the way: did anybody notice that apparently techno geeks are all males? or this is a demonstration of biological superiority or somebody is cheating...
(this to attract more attendees!!! )
hey.. of course i will take my girlfriend (n73me) with me to this event/party/meeting.. its not a wordcamp, its an xdacamp and sure a great idea and happening. i agree your words full!
Just wondering how all you experienced developers on here started out. I know you have probably been asked many times before but I am genuinely interested.
I am by no means any sort of developer. I first came to this site about two years ago when I first learned of rooting. Prior to that I had no knowledge whatsoever of developing or programming.
However I cant keep off here. Is it something that can be self taught. I would really love to delve into this so that I can start to have a little input into what goes on here and even if its just testing at least I could maybe be of help to someone. I have picked up little bits on how things work but my main question is where would be a good place to start self teaching??? It is becoming somewhat of an interest for me.
Any pointers would be hugely appreciated.
Thanks
If it's apps your interested in then AdamOutler has recently done a great video/article combo which would get you started. Check the portal / youtube channel....

I suppose anything really just to get a basic understanding to start with. I would love eventually to be able to create/modify custom roms ect, but yeah thanks for the pointer.

Well for roms, check if your device is supported by Dsixdas kitchen, if so that's a great place to start tinkering...
If you want to really start making changes to things though your going to need to learn to code to some extent...
Read and search, read and search...
Good luck

If you want a great beginning developer environment, wp7 is the easiest and most user friendly one to dive into.
I taught myself python with old boxed up books from the back rooms of my high school library. Didn't have a computer and did all my work on notebook paper. My first language. So, yeah, you can teach yourself anything.
I'm reading this right now.

Has tons of practical applications.
Might get a kick out of what I'm reading right now:
Communications, Radar and Electronic Warfare
Frontiers in Antennas: Next Generation Design and Engineering
Advances in Cryptology 2011
Digital Forensics with Open Source Tools
Philosophy and Simulation: The Emergence of Synthetic Reason

Nowhere near an experienced developer, but with a couple of apps and a ROM WIP, the only thing that taught me was xda-tv
Learning to me is just when somebody puts a puzzle in front of you with no clues or guidelines. But you are surrounded by 50k people that you may ask questions (xda).
I just keep trying to solve the puzzle and if I really don't get something I just ask xda.
That's just how I learn. Its how I've always learn. Just dive into it and rip it apart. Think as logically as possible and listen to some cool dub step while doing so for extra learning points.

Hello XDA, it's been a long time since I was truly active in these or any forums because life and reality provided an unintended distraction and then the pandemic. I find myself with a bit more time where I need a necessary diversion from reality and this forum has always provided this nerd with a world-wide community of nerds who really and truly know their ****. I have social networking friends that I follow, that I met through here and other technology forums that I have been friends with now for almost twenty years. I'm sure that how we met is irrelevant to many of them since we interact more about our day to day lives then the nerding out we did here in the forums. See, as a nerd, making real world friends was always difficult, but here, at XDA with my G1000 from Hitachi, one of the first-ever smart-phone, with a keyboard and a screen running Windows Mobile. I came here looking for a way to back-up my sms and call log to Microsoft Outlook and some genius had figured out a way to do it. I then had three different HTC Windows Mobile devices and XDA let me do amazing things with them.
Then, because I got suckered in to Sprint!, I upgraded to a Samsung Galaxy SII Touch or something ridiculous like that and it had so many issues out if the box but 2ss an amazing device. XDA was like High School and this is where you went from teen hacker wannabe to legit 1337 skills by rooting and then installing custom roms. The addiction to that thrill of knowing that a mistake, zigging when you're supposed to zag or skipping a step, rushing and missing something could spell disaster. I dropped a phone while installing a rom and the device boot-looped hard. Not to worry, XDA was here and someone else had done something similar, there was an entire forum thread devoted to all the people who had face-planted the rooting, rom or other process and lobotomized their Android device.
I still occasionally peruse the forums, lurking and liking and once in a while, replying. I just wanted to stop by and thank you for what seems like 17 or 18 years if amazing things. By you, I mean the people who run the forums behind the scenes at all levels and the moderators that keep the law and order necessary to thrive and function and you the users who's knowledge and other contributions are why we are here in these forums, from the creators to their guinea pigs to every other lurker like me. Thanks.
