Welcome to XDA! Enjoy the forums, and let me know if you have any questions. By the way, what SBCs do you use?
Hi, first was Odroid C2, then Raspberry Pi Zero2, and finally Radaxa Rock Pi SE. Meantime several tvBox with S905x (KM5 -3 pieces), S905X3(Vontar X3, X96 Max +), RK3328 (A5X Max +) - all works with Android, Linux and Libreelec/Coreelec.

Cool! I have a Raspberry Pi 4 8GB. How do you like your Radaxa Rock Pi SE?
Its quite cool SBC, especially with NVME SDD - I bought it just for this feature. For the moment it is waiting to aplication for HA because of trying to use RPI TV HAt with it. I couldn't run it despite the compatibility of the 40pin connector- it waits till resolving this issue. Support fotm radaxa cant -they don't support non-radax hardware.

I know! Micro SD is so slow - I've found using a USB 3.0 flash drive is better though.

Some of you may already know what [email protected] is but for those who don't, (Taken from the [email protected] homepage) "Our goal: to understand protein folding, misfolding, and related diseases
You can help scientists studying these diseases by simply running a piece of software.
[email protected] is a distributed computing project -- people from throughout the world download and run software to band together to make one of the largest supercomputers in the world. Every computer takes the project closer to our goals. [email protected] uses novel computational methods coupled to distributed computing, to simulate problems millions of times more challenging than previously achieved.
Protein folding is linked to disease, such as Alzheimer's, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers.
Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.
What is protein folding?
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery."

Joining you guys now. Used to be on the Custom-PC folding team, but had to stop due to the electric bills (2 years ago, was running dual GTX260s and an 8800GTS for physX) and using the PS3. Now I pay my own electric, and I spotted you on the team list. I spend a lot of my time on XDA so I may as well contribute to the team rather than the team of a magazine when my subscription ran out 18 months ago.

I'll join you guys if someone can help me set mine up? I did fold a long time ago, and I remember having the ability to run either all four instances at once or just one or two putting full usage on the selected cores. All of the versions now and tuts on how to set [email protected] just put ~25% usage on all four of my cores which is not what I want =/ any ideas on how to get it so I can do 100% on the selected cores?
Why it is just a so small community? I thought this is a board of lil computer freaks. ^^ I think the normal users are running their PCs for more than 2 hours of a day. That could be enough for folding in the background.

I'll gonna jump in now that the Bitgamer site is dead. We were number 46 in the league table. Come on people there must be some way to drum up some interest in this. It's for a good cause!
I don't really use my gaming rig that much for games anymore, suppose I could do this while my PC is idle
Hey guys,
I didn't really know where else to turn apart from the XDA forums so I'm hoping you guys can help me out.
Basically, I currently own a Acer Aspire 5734z laptop, but it's no good for gaming so I'm looking to upgrade but I'm completely oblivious to the terminology of PC specifications so I'm lost. Here are my current specs;
OS- Windows 7 Home Premium SP1
Processor- Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4500 @ 2.30GHz
RAM- 3gb
Video card- Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family (Pixel Shader version- 4.0, Vertex Shader version- 4.0, Dedicated Video RAM- 64 MB)
320gb hard-drive.
My current options are to upgrade my laptops video card (if possible) and upgrade my RAM to 4gb (My laptop will only support up to 4gb) or to buy a PC and use my 32" TV as a monitor. I'd rather buy a new PC if I can get a cheap enough deal (Under £300 would be perfect, the cheaper the better). I'd want to run a few higher-end games, even if its just on low quality, as long as it's playable I'll be happy. It'll probably be used to play games like Guild Wars 1+2, Diablo 3 (If possible), Starcraft II, Battlefield 3 etc.
Any ideas? What kind of specs on a PC should I look for? What graphic cards are useful for me and what ones aren't?
I'm also from the UK, and I'd prefer to buy in-store than to buy online as shipping is normally an expensive nightmare.
Thanks, I appreciate any help.
Your laptop video isn't upgradeable, your cpu and ram are way too weak to play the mentioned games as well. $300 PC no matter 300 pounds wouldn't likely ether. Your best bet is to build in stages if you need more help picking parts I can help.
Sent from my SGH-I747M using xda premium
$300 isn't enough to buy a pc for playing those games and in the laptop it would be difficult so you better be step by step and saving more money
Check this video is a $900 pc for playing Diablo 3

Building a custom would be a lot cheaper by the sounds of it then.
Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it, any recommendations on budget hardware?
Edit-
I'm sure I have an old tower + monitor in the attic, I might dig that out and see what parts it has then use that a base for upgrading. But I remember it constantly crashing so there must of been something wrong with it (It would crash every 15 minutes which made it useless)

I'd want to use it for gaming so Ubuntu wouldn't be much use (As far as I'm aware most games aren't compatible with Ubuntu, or is that my stupidity shining?), I could reinstall XP on it.
Been meaning to ask this but keep forgetting. If the s4 were an actual full fledged computer, what would be the equivalent for a regular computer? I know it's way more powerful than a 486, but I'm just curious on what it might be. I remember the days when my 800mhz Intel, forgot if Pentium 2 or 3, used to take over 24 hours to encode a movie ripped from a DVD.

Going by Geekbench, a low end Core 2 duo from July 2006.
http://ark.intel.com/products/27249
Both products get a geekbench score of ~3200. The Core 2 Duo would still be faster in single threaded tasks since it only needs 2 cores to get that score, while the galaxy needs 4 cores.
Very interesting. Thanks for the info.
Chromebook?
I was thinking the other day if it could run Office, a larger monitor, and connect to my scanner and NAS, it could replace my desktop.
But it can't, yet.
What's funny about it is that you'll have 100's of less problems on this phone that a 2006 PC.

I attached cable with the drive to my phone and it recognized it right away.
So I would say USB host works for flash drives at least.

Cool beans agat. It didn't need an additional 5vdc from a hub to power the device? Thumb drives probably don't need much to get them running but anything more would I'd guess. Yeah man, I'm ripping DVDs on my phone with an external DVD drive and a hub. Lol.

not quite; these are different types of processors; modern ARM is not comparable to modern x86 RISC processors at all. ARM is best for low power situations, x86 is much better for performance overall.
Keep in mind you are comparing one ARM machine with NAND flash memory 'hard drive' against an x86 with a spinning platter disc; and two totally different instruction sets.
I would like to see what a GS4 running pure linux vs an old Athlon or Core 2 Quad running same Linux at 1.9Ghz with same performing 'hard drive'/memory would do, but ARM is not ready to replace x86. CPU speed isnt everything.
If i had to make a comparison, i would say its closer to my ancient Dell Inspiron 5150 underclocked. Low power mode at 1.7Ghz (hyperthreaded, max 3.06 Ghz), 32bit, 2GB RAM (albeit at 333Mhz), 1600x1200 display, and with a PATA SSD (transcend PSD320), in terms of raw power, but i havent any way to directly test executable vs executable yet. Laptop still runs btw, and i still use it.

Also, how would these parts I've chosen compare to the PS4 in terms of performance?

And I never did see the point of AMD/ATI for Gaming. The 'Powered by Nvidia' splashscreen in every game isn't there for decoration... You'll never be able to use PhysX, for instance. And a lot of games have issues with AMD.
As for compared to the PS4... Even an IntelHD (do not buy an IntelHD GPU) on an i5 will have a better rating than a PS4. The hardware in the 'new' consoles is severely outdated.

Hey there, guys.
There is a new app for streaming games from your PC to your Tablet, not necessary the Shield and not necessary a tablet.
For those which can't stream games because don't own the required hardware, this is a pretty decent option. It is very responsive and detect your shield controller on the fly.
KinoConsole: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kinoni.console
Here is a small video i made using it:
The Pro version claims to bring better graphics, but in my opinion graphics are quite good on the free version already.

It works great, even with bad network conditions. As far as it being detected as a trojan.... It basically is a trojan, Trojans tend to do the same thing internally as a remote desktop app. It doesn't seem to have malicious code though. Your antivirus is just detecting the code that allows remote access to your PC.
There is a cool game which is under development by now, you can try to play it on its website: http://becoming.at/ - Wingsuitflyer
The game runs over Unity app, but it works great with Kino console as well. The Shield controller is fully supported.
I just test Kino; and it works really good.
I'm very surprised of the result.
I've played Ryse, son of rome on it.
Works fine but...
... not as flawlessly as e.g. Nvidia Gamestream or Steam in Home Streaming.
It seems that fps is limited to a specific value (about 20 to 30fps). My Wlan connection is 300mbit 5 GHz and i tested it with my shield tablet close to the router (about 2 meters - PC is connected via LAN).
Can anyone tell me if the free Version of Kinoconsole has limited fps or streaming speed? Will buying the pro version solve this problem, or have you made same experience in comparison to NVIDIA Gamestream and Steam In-Home Streaming?
Kind Regards
Rainer

Excuse me. You use Steam In Home Streaming with the Shield Tablet?
EDIT: Tried the free version of Kino Console and it looks great, but Steam Big Picture mode, on my Z3 Compact shows no video, just audio
Has anyone had issues getting Kinoconsole to detect their computer recently? I'm having no luck over LTE, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet.
This was working beautifully for me about a month ago, but now has issues on my Shield Tablet LTE. Tried a variety of other devices without issue so I'm wondering if it's a device specific problem.
EDIT: Was able to work around this issue by manually entering the local LAN IP.
Anyone else having an issue with KinoConsole having no sound on the Nvidia Shield Portable? How can I fix this.
Kino looks interesting, I'm looking for an alternative streaming app. May give this a whirl later.
Hey,
I've a problem with kino console. I can connect to my pc and start my games, but my controller isn't working. Anyone else had a similar problem? Also the performance isn't that good (low fps). It also feels very strange that you have to run the games in windowed mode but I can live with that.
