I've previously used a Redmi Note 4X and a currently use a ZUK Edge, and no matter how hard I tried to get used to MIUI/ZUI, I eventually got sick of the missing functionality and quirks of the stock roms on these phones.
I was amazed how much better my experience was after I switched to AOSPExtended on the RN4X and Mokee on the Edge. Looking at the threads there are plenty of AOSP/Lineage based roms for the Mix, but not many detailed bug lists. I'm very tempted to pick one up now that the price has gone down, and I want something with better battery life than the 3100mAh Edge.
Can anyone recommend the current most stable and functional rom for the Mix? What are some pros and cons of the different roms like crDroid, AOSPExtended, Lineage, etc?
Thanks!
Out of the box, MIUI (or MIUI-based ROMs like EPIC) will have better battery life judging by comments made in RR/LOS etc threads. I don't pay attention to battery life because I'm never far from a charger and I don't do anything that heavily drains it, like gaming. The ZUK Edge has the same SoC as the Mix but it has a 4400mAh battery so I would assume that battery life will naturally be longer, even with the slightly larger screen. Other users that pay more attention to battery life like albertoduqe will be able to give you more insight.
As for bugs, I have never experienced anything major. I've only tried RR, LOS, Viper and AOSP Extended but the only annoying one I encountered was losing the proximity sensor (reboot to fix). Some other complaints are speakerphone echo, slow to wake from fingerprint scanner (mostly gone now IIRC), loss of sound when switching back from bluetooth headset and upside down front-facing camera (fix).
Since they all pretty much seem to use the same base, you'll see the same issues posted on many of the threads for those ROMs. In that same vein, much of the same functionality can be found on them all too. You will find some stuff missing on some, but it'll often be minor. Like on Viper you don't have full control over the nav bar. Yes, you can add extra buttons but they can only do a small number of things, but on RR you can configure them to do virtually anything (and on long/double tap too). The only way you'll find out all their functionality is to flash them, or at least ask in their respective threads. If I leave MIUI (43rd time) then I will go back to RR as the dev is the most responsive and any issues get addressed very quickly.
The pros for MIUI are better battery life (but by how much really?), better camera quality (I've seen this claimed a few times but never saw an explanation as to why) and smoother general experience (I can confirm that MIUI/EPIC are indeed less prone to stuttering etc, even after tweaking, especially with MIUI 9).
Thanks for that, appreciate the detailed response. I might try MIUI first and see how I go. Normally I get offended by the horrific weather thing at the top of the notification shade, but the Eureka 8 Pro theme makes it look acceptable.

All the one's I tried were very similar, viper os
Just edged it, slightly quicker fingerprint unlock and better proximity sensor. Don't rule out miui 9 it is very good.
I would say that the unofficial AOKP ROM was probably the smoothest and had the best battery life. Trouble is it doesn't seem to be maintained and no NFC is implemented.
RR is great, feature packed but I have always had some small bug that prevented me from having it as a daily driver. For example, last build would not allow me to change from charging to transfer files. The one benefit of RR is the maintainer is very active and responds.
For me, the official LOS has been the most stable, albeit a little boring.

Sounds fine by me, on Lineage I'm not really interested in customization and bells and whistles, beyond the notification quick toggles

I think you will be very happy with LOS then.
I have tried all the others and always return to it. It just works.
Hey guys
I currently own a Galaxy S8, but I seriously consider buying the Mi Mix 2 once it will be available
I don't really like big overlays, I hate Touchwiz (or Samsung Experience or whatever), but I'm wondering what about MIUI
So I'm asking you guys the question : What do you think about MIUI ? What are its advantages and its drawbacks according to you ? Why would it be better than an other brand's software ?
Thanks !

The only thing I hate about MIUI is notifications (expand with two fingers, cant interact them in lock screen), besides that I like the design and optimizations, If you dont really care about the notifications handling than you will enjoy it.
Note that now Im using an almost stock android custom rom (ViperOS).
Anyone else ?

At the first I'm in love at MIUI , but in my perspective it's so laggy after learning about RR and custom kernel and tweaking many things I'll not buy devices with no custom development
As far as performance goes, I've always found MIUI to be smoother than custom ROMs. The gap now is almost non-existent, but 4-5 months back MIUI (and EPIC which is a MIUI mod) was quicker. I've never had a phone with a heavy UI like Touchwiz (mostly Nexus/Moto) so I can't really compare.
Even when I used MIUI (EPIC), I didn't use any MIUI apps. The Google/3rd party alternatives are all better.
The only feature that I'm aware of that MIUI has that others don't is Second Space, which allows you to run two separate versions of any app. Maybe others have it and I've never noticed. It might not even be something you'd use anyway. Some nice features are swiping down to hide the nav bar (frees up more space, although I've heard this has been tweaked in MIUI 9, and not for the better) and quick ball in the nav bar (like a basic PIE control). The themes are pretty good too, and there are a lot of them, but they only apply to the MIUI UI and not the apps themselves (unlike substratum on a custom ROM).
If you go with a custom ROM you will gain a lot but you'll also lose those features, and others like MIUI Cloud backup/Find My Device etc. Since you're talking about the Mi Mix 2, it could be months before custom ROMs are useable as a daily driver anyway so you may have to sit on MIUI for a while at least, even assuming that custom ROMs will be possible (highly likely given other Xiaomi devices).
The major disadvantage, as was mentioned, is the crappy notification implementation. Given the amount of notifications some people can get, it might be a mild inconvenience or a huge pain. There are apps that can mitigate this problem though, like Floatify. It also doesn't have ambient/always-on display. You'll be 'stuck' on Nougat too, so any new Oreo features like PIP (Picture-in-picture) and Notification channels likely won't make it to MIUI for a long time. We're only now getting split screen mode which I had almost 18 months ago on the Nexus 6.
I was primed to get the Mi Mix about this time last year but I waited about 6 months for the price to drop (so I could get the 256/6GB model) but also for ROM development to pick up. I'd recommend the same. Even a year later, how many alternatives are there that have a very large screen combined with high-end specs? Barely any that I can think of, barring the S8+ (6.2 inch, 84% screen-to-body ratio), the V30 (6/81.3%) and the Honor Note 9 (6.6 inch, not yet available).
Personally, I'm in love with MIUI since late 2013.
It's just a complete ROM for me, all features I need are just there and once you start using them it's hard to switch to something else.
I tried many ROM's like RR, CM, LOS, Flyme, etc but always revert back after some time. When using MIUI, I just don't need any 3rd party apps unlike on other ROM's where I have to replace almost every single system app to get functions I need or I get used to. Not to mention that nothing beats MIUI battery life, even with the underclocked kernel on custom ROM's can't beat simple battery saving on MIUI. Performance is the same as I noticed in my daily usage between custom ROM and MIUI, just slightly better Antutu scores on MIUI (if numbers mean something to you).
My suggestion is to try MIUI ROM if you have a chance since usage depends from user to user and it would be silly to say which one is better when everyone has different opinion

Okay guys, thank you very much for giving your opinion !
I'm looking for a new Oreo ROM for my device and care deeply about battery life. I wish I could stick with MIUI for that reason but because of how it handles notifications I can't stick with it. I'd love to hear suggestions on which ROM people would suggest
Sent from my MIX using Tapatalk
Oreo Global Beta 8.5.24 which was the last beta that MIUI updated this late is the best Rom to use in terms of battery life. I have tested just about all the Oreo Modified Stock Roms even EU Miui and Miui Pro, and these types of Roms don't quite work well because of and RCS Service drain.. which is a problem. The current Oreo based Rom are having heat issues currently: I have tried AICP, Pixel Experience, Lineage 15.1.. all have abnormal temperature when the phone is idle or doing minor tasks. Last i used Cdroid, i also went back to 8.5.24 after a day of testing Cdroid. I always compare all the roms to Miui 8.5.24 because compared to the current 9.5.6.0 stock and the previous 9.5.2.0. ~ You can tell the difference of battery usage. Oreo based Roms versus Oreo 8.5.24 very big difference in CPU handling and heat accumulation.
Hey guys, can you recommend me a custom pie rom for Oneplus 3T? I have been reading about Pixel Experience Rom & LineageOS. I'm unsure about which one to go. I mostly use my phone for messaging, calls and reddit/instagram/quora and stuff. I don't use my phone for gaming. So, what rom would you guys suggest for a daily driver.
Thanks!
For a long time Msm Extended. Stable and full of customization.
I'm on SkyDragon and quite happy with it. Very fast due to chip specific optimizations, has enough customization options, no apparent bugs at this point.
Tbh any ROM will do if you're not a demanding user so just try something

Well honestly I like simpler interface that's why I mentioned Pixel Experience and LineageOS. Who among them would be a better choice?

Well, apart from ROM specific customizations menues (which you can simply ignore if you don't wanna tinker with it) they all use stock AOSP interface, so they're all pretty much the same in that aspect.
I haven't personally tried (yet) those two that you mentioned, simply because SkyDragon was first Pie ROM that I tried after a bit of research and then I didn't feel the need to change it. I would assume however that LOS can't be a bad choice; I've used it before (older Android versions) on multiple devices and was always satisfied with it. It is still in beta though so some minor bugs are to be expected.
HAVOC, SKYDRAGON, MSM(next release)
I would highly encourage you to use NLOS 16. It's a stock LOS 16 build with developer's cherry picks to add more stability. There no extra gimmicks or customization than what you will find in a LOS build. Instead, it's more stable and bit better on optimizations that stock LOS build. I would highly recommend you to try it if you want to chose from LOS and Pixel Experience.

Is it stable? - Yes, during my 1 week usage with it, it was a stable ROM.
Battery Life - Your usage is different than mine. No one can answer this question for you. You need to flash and try and then see for yourself if the battery life is good for your usage. Someone who watches a lot of netflix or youtube can have 6 hours SOT and will call the battery life great. On the other hand, with 4G 100% time connected, and lot of location access, phone calls, high brightness usage, i am lucky if I have 4 hours SOT at the end of day. So, rather than asking battery life questions, just try the ROM and see for yourself. It has all basic functions working so you won't lose on anything. It's the beauty of custom ROMs. If you don't like one, switch to other one of use stock till you find the one ROM that works for you.
AOSiP
I have tried every pie rom , nothing can match AOSiP in smoothness and stability
Havoc Os, the best pie rom ever...
Using closed beta. Bugs are present
I use LineageOS 16, and it's the best of ROMs for me.
I like AOSP style OS, and I have ~5 hours of active screen.
DU -> Havoc -> Closed Beta ... I can not decide and jump between this 3 roms...
Currently NitrogenOS...no bugs, very smooth, great battery life
After testing many custom ROMs, my two favourites are Havoc OS and Pixel Experience. As these tend to be the most popular for users of mi 8 custom ROMs, I would like to ask the community which one has best stability, battery life and ram management. I do not use my phone for gaming so gaming performance is not really a concern.
I've recently down the rounds on the latest android 10 ROMs.
For me I preferred pixel experience out the 2 you have stated, seemed more stable and more importantly for me android auto was working where as it doesn't currently in havoc. Havoc does have more customisations though.
Havoc has just released an update which I'm yet to try, but for the time being I'm back to the latest Xiaomi EU ROM weekly, as it's rock solid. I will give the aosp builds a couple of months and to get android 10 stable and try them again.
This is all based on my experience / phone usage, so what works for me, may not be right for you

For me xiaomi eu was brilliant, but regarding battery life (which is ageing in my unit - it's from 09.2018), eu was not giving me enough to survive without recharging. On Aosp it's still 30% when only 15% on eu. I use EvoX currently, as it has least issues and glitches, and it's the only rom apart from Eu where all my banking apps work. I think you can only find the answer between your two Roms, if you find someone who switch between them after at least few days of usage.
Well, I'm using Havoc and it seems very nice. I prefer it to Pixel Experience because you can customize every single thing, but both are good. Very good battery life, about 7h screen on time. If you're looking for a MIUI Based rom with a good battery life, I recommend RevOS MIUI, it will surprise you.
