Yesterday I got my mi5, miui8 vs cyanogenmod 13?

Hello, I just got my Mi5 it has miui 7.5 and I noticed that out of it's 3Gb or ram, without any application running the phone says it only has 1.5 available, that was the first thing that I didn't like, then it has all those chinese applications, that I don't want to be on my phone. So I saw that poll of "What ROM is your favorite?" or something like that and the MIUI 7 has 0 votes, while the MIUI 8 has like 20% and the cyanogenmod 13 like 40% out of 50 votes. I know this is XDA so there is going to be some bias towards cyanogenmod, so I find surprising that MIUI 8 has 20% of the votes. So I was wondering what are the differences between the 2, and what are the pros and cons of both of those ROMs, thanks!

I would say that try them both for a while. Personally ive been going back n forth and currently running cm13 16th nov nightly which has been pretty good. I do miss soft touch on homebutton and also the better dropdown notification from miui8 or cm14/android 7 but cm14 isnt quite stable yet and also lacks soft touch etc.
I did try miui 8 stable 8.1.3.0 recently and it felt really fluid and snappy, I also miss my native language in miui but im working on translating it and might go full time miui when im done. Oh and yeah camera is better on miui aswell.
Other differences exist but as I mentioned, better to try both out for yourself to get your own opinion on it
Btw, dont worry so much about memory usage. Its better that the memory is used than not. Memory is flushed really quickly (which you shouldnt even notice unless there is a problem in coding or os optimisation) when needed for the next app/s that need it

Personally, I decided to stick with MIUI8. I must say, I like the UI more than stock android. It has its faults, like google backup (well, restore) not working, or MI cloud bugging you to sync, but that's solvable with root access. Just backup/sync once, then freeze the cloud apk and you're done. Unfreeze next time you need it.

I'd like to reiterate that. Unused RAM is useless RAM, if you only look at how much you have free, what do you need it for?
There is a difference between not having enough RAM and having enough, even though it's full. Most implementations cache frequently used data in RAM, which is quickly dropped if a program need it. What the user gets from this (if done right), is subjectively more fluid experience.

I have to say I was sceptical about MIUI( couse I'm used to CM,way back to SGS2), but recently bought Mi5 prime, and decide to give a try to MIUI,and I must say I was pleasantly surprised...Currently running MIUI global 8.1.2.0 stable

MIUI 8 is better for normal life

Most stable,complete,functional AOSP/Lineage based rom?

I've previously used a Redmi Note 4X and a currently use a ZUK Edge, and no matter how hard I tried to get used to MIUI/ZUI, I eventually got sick of the missing functionality and quirks of the stock roms on these phones.
I was amazed how much better my experience was after I switched to AOSPExtended on the RN4X and Mokee on the Edge. Looking at the threads there are plenty of AOSP/Lineage based roms for the Mix, but not many detailed bug lists. I'm very tempted to pick one up now that the price has gone down, and I want something with better battery life than the 3100mAh Edge.
Can anyone recommend the current most stable and functional rom for the Mix? What are some pros and cons of the different roms like crDroid, AOSPExtended, Lineage, etc?

Out of the box, MIUI (or MIUI-based ROMs like EPIC) will have better battery life judging by comments made in RR/LOS etc threads. I don't pay attention to battery life because I'm never far from a charger and I don't do anything that heavily drains it, like gaming. The ZUK Edge has the same SoC as the Mix but it has a 4400mAh battery so I would assume that battery life will naturally be longer, even with the slightly larger screen. Other users that pay more attention to battery life like albertoduqe will be able to give you more insight.
As for bugs, I have never experienced anything major. I've only tried RR, LOS, Viper and AOSP Extended but the only annoying one I encountered was losing the proximity sensor (reboot to fix). Some other complaints are speakerphone echo, slow to wake from fingerprint scanner (mostly gone now IIRC), loss of sound when switching back from bluetooth headset and upside down front-facing camera (fix).
Since they all pretty much seem to use the same base, you'll see the same issues posted on many of the threads for those ROMs. In that same vein, much of the same functionality can be found on them all too. You will find some stuff missing on some, but it'll often be minor. Like on Viper you don't have full control over the nav bar. Yes, you can add extra buttons but they can only do a small number of things, but on RR you can configure them to do virtually anything (and on long/double tap too). The only way you'll find out all their functionality is to flash them, or at least ask in their respective threads. If I leave MIUI (43rd time) then I will go back to RR as the dev is the most responsive and any issues get addressed very quickly.
The pros for MIUI are better battery life (but by how much really?), better camera quality (I've seen this claimed a few times but never saw an explanation as to why) and smoother general experience (I can confirm that MIUI/EPIC are indeed less prone to stuttering etc, even after tweaking, especially with MIUI 9).

Thanks for that, appreciate the detailed response. I might try MIUI first and see how I go. Normally I get offended by the horrific weather thing at the top of the notification shade, but the Eureka 8 Pro theme makes it look acceptable.

All the one's I tried were very similar, viper os
Just edged it, slightly quicker fingerprint unlock and better proximity sensor. Don't rule out miui 9 it is very good.

I would say that the unofficial AOKP ROM was probably the smoothest and had the best battery life. Trouble is it doesn't seem to be maintained and no NFC is implemented.
RR is great, feature packed but I have always had some small bug that prevented me from having it as a daily driver. For example, last build would not allow me to change from charging to transfer files. The one benefit of RR is the maintainer is very active and responds.
For me, the official LOS has been the most stable, albeit a little boring.

Sounds fine by me, on Lineage I'm not really interested in customization and bells and whistles, beyond the notification quick toggles

I think you will be very happy with LOS then.
I have tried all the others and always return to it. It just works.

Help! Why am i facing performance issues with custom roms

Hey guys. I usually wouldnt have made a thread like this, but honestly, i am getting tired trying rom after rom to find the one that works. I am the sort of guy who switches phones pretty often because i like what Devs at XDA are able to do to customize them. So i have recently started using higher end phones, and coming from mid-rangers i expected awesome performance and lag free experience. My last device was a one plus 2. After switching to mi5(which has a better processor), i have been experiencing lag spikes with rom. None of them work perfectly smooth, I would go to the depth of saying that my old Nexus 5 provides much smoother experience compared to this. Surprisingly, this is not the case with miui. The stock Miui rom aswell as my current rom(cpMIUI) are both super smooth(as is expected out of a sd820). I am stock android guy though, also google camera port doesnt work on miui. I just wanted to confirm if it was just my unit or is everyone facing similar issues. Buying a sd820, i dont expect something as simple as pulling down the notification bar to be laggy. Also. this issue is more prominent with Lineage OS and Lineage OS based roms. I found AOSP rooms to be generally smoother, but still, laggy enough to notice. This really wasnt the case with OP2, and i honestly wouldnt have switched if it wasnt for the amazing camera of Mi5(only with GcamMod ). Any help would be much appreciated. Mi devices works better with MIUI... That's just the way it is. Custom rom experience on Mi can't compare with the likes of Oneplus, Nexus, or maybe Pixel...

u can install Gcam in miui just use magisk to root and add camera fix module

am using los15.1 and most of the apps freezed now its smooth and giving good battery life

All lags, freezes and scroll stutters caused by kernel. All oreo kernels based on HMP scheduling with perf daemon. And don't know why, but it cant provide smooth FPS while ui drawing (maybe some bug with frequency drops). So, 90% roms based on Oreo will lag while drawing UI all time (you can check it in dev settings > Profile GPU Rendering). Some roms trying to avoid this bug, like LOS, AEXMod with some tweaks in governor. This 2 roms much smoother than other. Or you can change default governor from Interactive to Conservative (root required). It brings massive boost on ui drawing smoothness. Or try something based on EAS kernels (Purefusion, JDC AOSP). But these roms based on 8.0 Oreo.

Thanks for a constructive reply. I am not using LOS because of the fingerprint delay bug, also i found LOS to be the laggiest of them all. But i recently installed Cosmic os 8.1, and this one seems to be rendering fine. It is using the priima kernel i suppose, with interactive governors and cfq for io scheduling. Also, i just checked, it has oc'ed the sd820 to normal frequencies (2.15 and .16)
Also, i have tried Floppy kernel, based on all 3, Google, linaro and ubertc. Also, i tried switching the governor to zen(the one i am aware of thats made to make your ui smoother). This issue is not only persistent with oreo roms, but also the nougat roms. But i have been happy and impressed by cosmic, but i will keep on switching roms and hopefully would be able to provide some feedback to the XDA community.

Absolutely yes! People were blaming me also for using antutu, because I had this doubt, then discovered that the kernel uses a strange sort of cpu scheduler which causes a performance drop of 20/25%, (still can't fix switching performance profile) results were different switching to a custom kernel. I think that people when create new roms they just steal LOS kernel, so that's why this issue occurs in more than one rom.
Anyway I also prefer the stock android camera, and I like to use the "classic" way instead of magisk thing (never liked that), just download GCam, then remove in the framework folder the camera_experimental.jar (or something called like that) and you should be fine, there are some little bugs too but is is usable.

So which kernel are you using rn? Cosmic OS comes with the priima kernel, it is the best experience i have had by far. Glad to know i am not the only one suffering stutters, but also kinda disappointed to see this happen.

Yea, me too, and there were people who treated me like crazy lmao, imo is a kernel scheduler issue, btw Idk why that happens , anyway there are plenty of custom kernels, in particular I used Floppy which fixes the problem.(Still need to tweak some kernel governor settings)

Aye i tried floppy. Didnt quite work for me. Regardless, priima is working fine. I am thinking of switching to other roms. Will try the floppy again, thanks for the advice.

When i said it needs some tweaks, that is because it works in a strange way, the performance profile in the "Battery" section of LOS needs to be set to something higher, that controls the CPU, meanwhile there I also used an app called "Spectrum" that lets you control the GPU performance profile (Even though it should be control CPU), you need to set all of those to "Balanced"

Hello, I have the same problem. My MI 5 only works on miui. Any other newer rom with android Oreo brings me problems, slow looks like snapdragon 4xx. Game performance gets horrible. But they are only in the most recent roms, because in the stable JDC Team 7.1.2 rom it behaves absurdly fluid and fast, in Lineage 14.1 as well. I do not know what causes this but I can not use any more Oreo roms. I prefer Pure Android but can not use the new roms at the moment, I should settle for the nougat or miui roms. Well, I'm not saying that the new roms are bad, the work of the developers is wonderful, congratulations to everyone, but something in the new roms does not behave well.

Try the cosmic os. It seems to be working amazingly well. Also Los never worked for me, full of stutters and the ofc the fingerprint delay on lockscreen issue. Also yeah, jdc aosp should work, in my experiments, all AOSP based roms are working fine, there is some issue with Los kernel, and hence with all roms based off of it.

Worth using?

I've been given a white and gold 3T that was no longer needed. The battery is a bit shot and the screen has burn in on the status bar. I was thinking, if I send it off for a new battery by OnePlus, is it worth using?
My current phone is a Pixel 2XL, but I am missing the headphone jack and the cell reception isn't the best...
Is the 3T decent on the stock rom? Or is it better on a custom rom/kernel?
I only really use YouTube, Gmail, Netflix and messenger... Just want it to be smooth enough.

The stock ROM updated to the latest security patch seems okay. YouTube is a bit laggy compared to my Pixel 2Xl.
I do prefer the size of the 3T though, it's really compact.
Would a custom kernel speed up the stock ROM? On apps like YouTube?
Also, I have managed to get the WiFi calling option to appear in settings, but from memory, I don't think it actually works? I am on the 3 UK network.

I sent mine a couple of months ago for a new battery and it's 100% worth it.
Custom kernels do speed up the stock ROM but your battery life might suffer a bit., so if you want the best experience I'd suggest a custom ROM based on Pie (e.g. Havoc/Luis' Resurrection Remix). Q ROMs are good enough but most of the better ones (as far as battery life is concerned) don't support device encryption yet.
I cannot comment on WiFi calling as I don't use it at all.

Would that be a Pie custom ROM and a custom kernel?
My only concern with custom ROMs is that I use banking apps and other apps that then may not work when rooted or on custom firmware. Does Magisk get past this? I have been using the 3T this morning and other than the unusable battery, the phone is quite nice. I like the size, the performance is decent enough (I expect it'll improve on a custom ROM) and the screen is brighter than my Pixel 2XL. It is definitely slower though, apps like gmail take a couple of seconds longer to load, but I am never in much of a rush!

Havoc/Resurrection Remix etc are custom ROMs which come bundled with their own custom kernel. Mind you, Pie versions of custom ROMs are mainly to be found in their up-to-date threads (even if they're updated for the Q versions). Check the most thanked posts on the sidebar in the Havoc thread for an easy way to get to the updated Pie ROM with the latest security patches.
Magisk does pass CTS and banking apps/Google Pay work in my case, but it does need a module and some editing in order to work. The MagiskHide Props Config module does that job, you'll need to configure it - selecting OnePlus as brand and 3T as model, latest update, works though. Here's a quick link to the module's thread with info etc. You'll also need Busybox (available again as a module in Magisk) in order to get the Props Config module to work.
The battery replacement was free even though the initial quote was around 36€ so around 30 quid - don't know why, might have been because of the free out-of-warranty camera replacement I requested as well. I'd suggest doing that too, the original OP3 and 3T cameras are known to stop focusing after a while and OnePlus offers a free fix even if the phone is out of warranty.

Okay, thanks again. A battery is about £15 online and replacement is very easy, so I am not sure whether to do it DIY or get them to do it and hope they may do it for free if I claim to have camera issues? (it focuses fine at the moment...)
I've had fairly good experiences with Resurrection Remix in the past when I dabbled with ROMs on my Nexus 6P (I stopped when I got my Moto Z Play as it never really needed it) So I'll give that a go tonight and see how it performs. The battery truly is shot, my partner who owned it before always had it at 100% brightness and used it whilst charging, so it degraded very quickly. As did the OnePlus 5 I gave her last year.!!!

I've had fairly good experiences with Resurrection Remix in the past when I dabbled with ROMs on my Nexus 6P (I stopped when I got my Moto Z Play as it never really needed it) So I'll give that a go tonight and see how it performs. The battery truly is shot, my partner who owned it before always had it at 100% brightness and used it whilst charging, so it degraded very quickly. As did the OnePlus 5 I gave her last year.!!!

You're welcome! I chose the RMA way just to be extra safe, I wanted an OEM battery after reading mixed reviews concerning third party batteries (the general consensus is that they're not as long lasting, but the ones from ReplaceBase should be at least half decent) and the price difference has been worth it, for now. My autofocus was just starting to malfunction when I applied for the RMA, you could try and give it a shot.
Yeah, screens are expensive and the chances of getting an LCD display or a flickering screen when using a custom ROM are rather high and not worth the price if the burn-in doesn't bother you that much.

Is it just autofocus that is the issue? Tap to focus works fine. Autofocus does seem a bit temperamental....
What is your battery like post-replacement?

OnePlus customer service say they will replace camera free of charge (it doesn't seem too bad, but may as well?) And they will replace the battery for £24.50

Assuming I can get WiFi calling to work, I think I will get it replaced. As long as I can get 5 hours SOT out of it across a mixed usage day, that'd be the maximum I'd ever need. I rarely ever go over 3.5-4 hours SOT on any day on any of my phones.

SoT is, well, extremely subjective but I usually get around 4.5/5 hours SoT if mainly outdoors on LTE. WiFi, on the other hand, I can easily get around 6.5 to even 7 hours SoT. That's mainly Reddit/YouTube/Telegram/a bit of Instagram.
Autofocus started getting way more erratic than usual, tap to focus sometimes did nothing - this will generally degrade to a point where the camera won't even focus in manual mode. Also, backup your data before sending the phone (and maybe leave it on stock OOS). You'll basically start fresh with a locked bootloader and OOS 9.0.6.

Oh wow, really? That is better that I would have imagined it would get!
I am hoping it may work out if I stay on stock as I do prefer sticking to stock these days, but if not, I will give RR a go.

Sorry for the delay - RR, Havoc and custom ROMs in general would both feel smoother and more battery-friendly over stock, but I don't know if it's that huge of a difference. Haven't really tried Pie OOS that much but it felt like there was a bit more stutter when compared to custom ROMs.

Best miui 13 port for redmi k20 pro ?

Im still running miui 10 and beside sensor issues in the worst moments and batteryperformance decreased (8-10h sot), im pretty happy.
The release of miui 14 looks pretty interesting, same like miui 13. Unluckily xiaomi will never bring any of those and therefore might xiaomi.eu never aswell.
Meanwhile is there any miui13 port which is super stable and perfectly working (i heart of ghost, miui tn, aphixrog). Im looking for something to flash, forget and never regret (for the next full year).
How is the battery performance ?
I would prefer stock vendor & kernal, no custom "magic" from few days experience dev .
Or should i forget about the "upgrade", stay on miui10 and investigate the drain issues ?

How is it possible that you have 8-10h SOT in 2+-year old phone? 5h SOT is pretty good, 6 is very good.

Depends on the usage, but everything on my phone is adjusted to consume as less as possible (but i havent done wild stuff like lower clockspeed, kernal, voltage... only debloat, disabled everything which could be battery intensive in settings, using leandroid + greenify), meanwhile i range between 7-9 hours i guess, when i fresh installed it i ranged between 8-11 hours.
My battery should still have efficiency around 85-90%, im trying to hold battery between 15-85%.

I may gonna try MiuiTN, according telegram groups that seem to be the best miui 13 port.

Which version are you going to test (https://miuitn.vercel.app/Rom_MiuiTN/Raphael/) and is there any info how to install (recovery version, filesystem, etc.)? And the most important - how safe is this?

I dont have specific plans so far, because i didnt got enough time, maybe in christmas vacation.
Probably 1.8 and i read once that you need a specific recovery (unluckily cant tell you which).

I checked miuitn 13 A12 but it doesn't have all languages (there is English and a few Asian ones only). Android security updates are from June, while RaphaelOS (also Miui 13 - 22.8.25, A12) are from August 1st. In general, I have the impression that all these roms are very similar. On stock kernel geekbench is 690 and 2675. On Steroid is 700 and 2747. But AbhiX feels more snappy.
Both roms (AbhiX as well) are without encription so you need standard recovery (I have latest official OrangeFox).

If there is a workaround to get native language in apps for me personally its not a big problem if i got english in os.
I havent tested a single miui 13 port so far, so i cant bring useful informations to this conversation unluckily.
According telegram groups MiuiTN seem to be the most stable, balanced rom and others are "kanged", but well yeah people talk on telegram...
I unluckily wont have time to test all of them myself so i might follow your experience ;D and maybe some other guys come along this thread and share their experience aswell.
Worst case i stay another year on miui 10 and get Rog Phone 6 after... Im just hell of annoyed my sensors do not work how they should on miui10 sometimes.

Dont go for RaphaelOs.
Better go for Miui12 or MiuiTn.
Im on VoltageOs 2.1 which is awesome, i heard also good stuff from Los20.

BTW I'm using Evolution X with stock settings at 72Hz with no battery saving tweaks. I bought the phone more than 3 years ago and use it daily. Afraid to replace this beast because I'm so used to this good SOT.

I easily reach 10 hours sot + on voltageOS. I shared some screenshots of 11-12 hours sot on my 3 year old battery in telegram group with light-medium usage. My idle is dope aswell, most of the time lower then 1% (ext4, voltage2.1, bitgapps, magisk delta).
I heard similar good from LOS20, Android 13 seem to be awesome in terms of background managment (im using 100+ apps).

Did you perhaps have a chance to use EvoX as well? If so, how would you say it compares to VoltageOS?
I've heard only good things about VoltageOS. Are there any issues with it, stuff that does not work?

I have used EvoX 2 years back for a while, cant compare it unfortunatly and i wont flash another rom until i buy a new phone probably.
Well unluckily there are a few issues on Vos2.1:
- Udfps unlock sometimes does not work. (there seem to be the same issue on Los20 and according Los20 dev it seem to be a issue with android system)
- nightmode, reading mode, extra dim does not work together with dc dimming after unlock. (according Voltageos dev this is a common issue on most aosp roms)
- from time to time i notice scrolling laggs and rarely in games aswell. (could be related to kernel, but not sure)
- expandable screenshot ?long screenshot? slightly buggy ? (on miui it have been working better)
- on twitter i have noticed some issues like i couldnt go back to overview after reenter app, on discord after editing i have noticed scrolling does not work anymore. (but those issues can be caused by the app / restricted battery setting / android system idk)
Thats all i have noticed so far, more or less (if i have not missed anything). Anyway im very happy and think its a really great rom. The only thing which is bothering me the most is udfps unlock inconsistency and for night mode + dc dimming i am using twilight. (those things have been working better on miui, not gonna lie. )

I might just give it a go one day. I must admit that MiuiTN also looks tempting since I like the classic Miui style, but I can't find much reliable information on that rom.

I have not been using miuitn for a long time, so i unluckily cant tell you more about that. Miui13 ports for sure arent as stable as official releases / xiaomi eu roms.
So it might depends on your personal usage, you might not get around trying it out at your own.
You can also join the telegram group, there you can follow discussions about miuitn releases. People this days most likely use telegram. (which i personally dislike over xda, but what ever.)
