Lifelong tinker-er excited to be here! - Introductions

I've ventured into the phone space to see what I can break. I'm interested in the different hats that cell phones can wear so to speak. I've (white) hacked a lot of things, so I'm excited to what's possible with cell phones. Hopefully soon, I'll be able to contribute and pay it forward! Cheers.

What got you started on developing and hacking?

There are a lot of people here who spend many hours a week hacking and developing ROMs and various apps, to the great enjoyment and benefit of thousands of users. There are many more who may not be involved in writing code, but who test-drive the creations, report bugs, offer what support they can, etc. I reckon no-one would keep up all this work more or less for free while juggling work, studies, relationships, kids, etc unless they really enjoyed it.
What got you started on this track? How did you begin? How long have you been at it? Have things changed a lot since you began?
I'm no programmer. The only reason I'm here is because I derive great pleasure from getting more out of whatever I happen to own (or at least getting more of what I need/want)--and I happen to own a couple of android devices. When I was a lad we didn't have much in the way of tech, and so I discovered the joy of squeezing the most possible work and entertainment out of eg. the crappy ancient computer we had at home.
I also have a strong desire to customise things I use to my own preferences and quirks and a strong dislike for having to spend money on getting things my way. It's always felt like the boring way out. Moreover, it's felt like a tremendous waste--why not spend the money on something that requires it? Eg. beer, although even there I prefer home-brewed. Nothing has changed, even though I'm now an adult free from the budgetary constraints of a lazy kid. If anything, I'm more inclined to try doing things myself, perhaps because I have a better idea now of what can be done.
Aside from that I guess it's all about the perverse pleasure of getting things to do what they're not supposed to do--or what people believe they can't do
How 'bout you?
Pretty much the same
Do any of you guys do this stuff for a living as well??
For me it's the appeal of customizing my devices, especially if I can make something cheap into something of real value. The NC is just about perfect for that.
...then there is the geek cred in the office.
First started with a hack for my router... then my SanDisk mp3 player... jailbroke my iPhone... and now my NC!
As raz stated, thanks to the hard work of others, you can get more value out of something than originally thought.
Plus the look from others that have the same item, and I've got something that they don't!
The evolution of my hacking lol....
Starting from like age 13
Dreamcast (not really a hack just took a cdrw lol)
Xbox (chip with evox rom)
ps2 (chip)
Xbox 360 (new DVD firmware)
iPhone jailbreak
various software keygen programming
Inspire 4g
Nook color!!
Ps3 jailbreak
Fun times

Thank you so much for the compliment.
Yay for autism support! I'm actually autistic myself, I'm very high functioning but I have some pretty severe limitations that affect my life daily. I'm so happy about all the autism awareness nowadays, back when I was in school I desperately needed specialized help but couldn't get it because things like asperger's & higher functioning autism weren't widely recognized at the time(this was in the mid-80s, I'm old). Back then, if a kid wasn't mute & rocking back & forth in a corner, they weren't considered autistic. I was just known as "the weird kid" & while I was given daily therapy to try and get me to talk more, that was the extent of any special help. The teachers didn't understand me & as a result, I got in trouble a lot & I did horribly in school despite testing in the top 5% in my state intelligence-wise. I really wish more help had been available back then for 'slightly autistic' kids like me.
But hey, the past is the past, I'm just glad for all the awareness today

[Q] I'm 18 and I need a job!

I've been fortunate enough to have parents who have been able to make it possible for me to not have to work. I've never had a job before, but I'm really interested and I would like to get working somewhere! I am just finishing high school, and I am starting College after summer, I have an entire summer free to work! But where o:
Well first let me mention this. I have a close friend who currently works at Papa Murphy's, he knows there's an open spot for me and I could get a job there no question, according to him. Has anyone here worked at a similar business who could provide me with some insight regarding a Pizza place, or fast food in general? Like it, hate it, or just okay?
Other than that little.. idea, I have nothing else in mind specifically, I'm looking for recommendations! I'm into tech, and while I'm not professional in any one area of tech, I would certainly consider myself more knowledgeable with technology than your average consumer.
Best Buy maybe? Target? A Grocery store?
I have nothing specific in mind, if there's anything you would be willing to share with me, please do! A job you liked, a job you hated, things to look for and things to stay away from, anything! Share me with me your wisdom from experience!

Things you need to ask yourself before getting a job:
-Do I need or want a job?
-What for?
-Do I have a specific field I'm interested on?
-How much money do I require to survive?
-If need to drive...do I own a car?
-Will I take this job seriously or just need something to kill time?
-Can I do something on my own before I get involved in the corporate world?
-Is there any small shops where I may be able to get training on a specific trade/skill?
After you gather this info, then carry on with what is more convenient to you.
Cheers,

Thanks for the reply!
Although my parents pay for my food, education (currently), and other normal expenses, I typically have to come up with my own money for something that isn't necessary, or the occasional "gift".
I want a job for the extra money so I can gain experience, and become more financial independent from my parents. I have a car and I live in a pretty populated city, not a major city, and I know there's tons of work available. I'll certainly take any job seriously, and I truly do enjoy becoming more educated in.. anything really!
I have a car and I do not "need" a job, which I know understand my title may be misleading.. oops, but I certainly want it for reasons more important than just "to kill time" d:
Go to college...or a trade school. Learn to code. Learn to do what you love so someone will love to hire you doing what you love. Do not settle for something just because you need a job. Work hard to do something you enjoying working hard at. If you enjoy tech, learn something in the tech field and search for jobs related to it. In an article written by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2013, it was estimated that between 2010 and 2020, jobs in computer systems design and related services "is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 6.1 percent, compared with 3.6 percent for the broad industry category—professional, scientific, and technical services—and 2.9 percent for all industries." You are young and you are interested in one of the most profitable markets currently available. Use that interest to advance your career and your life. It's not enough to just love tech...you have to do your best to learn about the industry surrounding it so you can profit from the advances and secure your future.
Just my two cents.
Start phone repairs. Saying you started you own business at 18 has to be a big plus.
Sent from my Galaxy Note 4........FAKE! Admit it, you thought I had money for a second didn't you?

Becoming Santa

Now, first thing first I am definitely not a blogger so I don’t know how to write articles etc. but I always want to share my thoughts and sake of Christmas spirit hell yeah, I am writing this.
So, it starts from childhood, the starting line of everything. My childhood is pretty average and my parents and this amazing wonderful world (in child’s eye) thought us nobody does anything for free specially favors. In some cases, it may not seem like, but there is always reason behind every favor you got from anybody in your entire life and that is how world works. This is hard coded in our brain by evolution.
So, after figuring this out, it become hard to believe in anybody who does amazing things just for us without expecting anything. that’s why it is hard to believe in Santa clause. really, who does that, give us gifts fulfilling wishes just for being nice and a glass of milk and cookie. I don’t think so.
Everybody knows there is no actual Santa Claus but still, we celebrate Christmas. Why, wait the big question is for whom? Who made this possible, putting us into full Christmas spirit mode. I can only imagine our beloved Santa can do that. Wait so is there a Santa or not.
Yes, there is, not one but thousands if not millions Santa’s operating undercover hidden behind aliases of parents, relative, friends and making Christmas possible every year.
And that’s not it, there are more and one of them are our precious developers, making unimaginable things possible. Their service is not limited to Christmas or another festival season. They work all year around fulfilling our wish lists. Spending hours doing hard work just to make our life easier, solving problems, presenting gifts. All this without expecting nothing more than a coffee or snack.
There is a Santa more than one, hidden behind every developer.
Santa clause is important, but these peoples are more important who made Christmas possible. And now it’s our turn to become Santa for them.
So, at this Christmas I want you to become Santa for your favorite developer and made their Christmas special than ever before by donation or however you like.
I know I used word Santa a lot and it is confusing but I guess I am sorry about that English is not my first language.
1. Why I wrote this article?
Because I want to inspire people, like Saint Nicolas did. So, become generous be thankful to everyone who made your life easier.
2. What is my inspiration behind this?
Just few hours ago an amazing developer, helped me and compiled a test version of an xposed module just for me. The public version was not working for me, I can’t believe that he did it on same day I did not even asked for it. I don’t know about you but this made my Christmas 10 times special.
Thanks a lot, you are amazing! I have not mentioned his name but guess if he is reading this he knows, and that’s all I want.
So, stay sweet this Christmas, become generous, become Santa
whats the point of this?

Hey

I'm mimosa (or John in the default world). Been here before under various names off and on for years, but not in years. It's mimosa like the tree, not the drink. I live in Oakland, CA and am running for mayor (I'll keep the politics off here). I'm currently running a public benefit corporation with the aim of bridging the enormous devide between the public at large and the homeless.
Since getting covid and mennengitus last year, I became homeless after spending most the year in ICU in San Francisco. I was dumbfounded that most of this community can't change there ringtone if they even have a phone, let alone use the internet to look for work or housing.
Before the pandemic, I founded this company (Printing Properties Limited-corporate) along with the son of the founder of burning man to develop a "3d" concrete printer to drive the cost of housing down, so as to house the homeless. Rebuilding the printer is a goal of mine, but it has expanded to other areas as well.
I am interested in exploring/developing a mod that makes cell usage... less technical I guess is a way to put it... for the technological illiterate.
I just started a repurposing electronics division. I figure hands on application with electronics is easier to start with than trying to teach code strait out of the gate. I also repurpose batteries to use with solar/wind/geo-thermal energy systems.
Ill be here frequently now and, as you can see, love to talk. So feel free to send suggestions, advice, comments, and political banter my way.
Be good to each other,
John Marks
Welcome to xda.
Sad to hear about your recent problems.
Happy you survived 2020 and now part of the xda family.
I just rewatched a video about 3D concrete printing that YouTube found for me a few months ago.
It is an interesting project and it seems there has been quite a bit of advancement in the last few years.
If I knew before, I forgot that it started out in the early 2000's.
People getting confused with settings on devices is not a new thing.
I might be dating myself but, there were a lot of people who had 12:00PM flashing on their VCR.
Not sure about making cell phones less technical, maybe an app that can set the adjustments on a phone.
Nice easy to use UI with explanations of each option.?
Your repurposing division sounds interesting.
Are you recycling lithium/hybrid batteries?
From what I have read, their is advancement in that field also.
Best of luck on your personal/career endeavors.
Cheers.
