I want to root my phone but want to keep all of my data and apps to reinstall after root.
Is there any way i can save everything? I have access to a computer and am on android 13.
Have looked at samsung switch but on a thread someone said that data is not always saved and adb backup is deprecated.
Perhaps NeoBackup would work for you:

Some few apps I had to login/authorize again but most worked like a charm.

Neobackup sadly doesnt work on my non rooted phone

Isn't that an oxymoron?
I am not very computer literate but i just read up on how lately android has restricted access more and more so i guess ill just have to take screenshots of all my settings and manually restore them later.
Still, is there a good alternative that saves all apps without their data? I think ill be using smart switch then

Hmm, nothing stops you from making multiple backups:
https://alternativeto.net/software/titanium-backup/
I think Titanium is the best known (haven't tried it years though but people still seem happy with it), so check this and its alternatives.
I would be really keen to read about your experience(s). And, of course, plenty of good luck
PS: For calls and SMS I use
https://alternativeto.net/software/sms-backup-and-restore/about/
for years now, on any phone, has never failed me.

Thanks, i will do an update when ill do it
No Root : Samsung Switch is best, No third party app will able to make data backup
Rooted device : Swift Backup best choice. (It will make app backup without root too)
Titanium backup is crap and outdated for newer devices/OS and needs root.
I recommend following in your situation :
Use Samasung Switch and backup - Root device and restore it. There are chances some app may not corretcly restore data but that's limitation and have to accept. Once you have rooted device move to SwiftBackup (or any other that suits you best)

Hello, i just got my first smartphone, i have AT&T and i didnt want an iphone and was more drawn toward andriod, so i got a captivate. I would really like to do alot of the things in the "Pimp my captivate" guide but i have some questions first.
1.) If i root the phone, and take off the bloatware, will i still get updates if i go to the check for updates in settings? (ex. like the gps fix and froyo update someday).
2.) Its not going to subtract any features from the phone is it ? (ex. the google syncing and everything will still work? Basically is the rooting process and or bloatware removal going to change the way the phone works besides the programs those being gone?
Ill admit i'm an andriod phone hacking noob, but i do know computers well and programming and have altered other devices in the past.

Since no updates have come down yet, I don't think anyone is sure of the answer to this. Keep in mind that it's a good idea to make backups of the app APKs on your sdcard before you remove them (just in case you want to reinstall them).

Removing AT&T's crappy apps won't affect the phone negatively at all. They simply won't be there, so you can't use them (if you find them useful). The only app that I can think of you may want to keep is the AT&T Hot Spots app so you phone can use free AT&T wifi at locations such as Starbucks.
Yes, you will still get updates as long as you do not install a custom ROM. (Rooting is ok).
The only functionality that will be removed will be that of the apps you delete
Thank you so much this clears up alot of the things I've been wondering.

Rooting issues
I have tried everything I have found online. The superuser icon is there. I have downloaded several apps that require the device to be rooted. I turned on usb debugging, and turned it off. I've downloaded update.zip several times.
I'm not entirely a noob when it comes to tweaking phones. I flashed roms on windows mobile and performed all sorts of modifications I got off this site.
I have the superuser icon. I downloaded titanium. Titanium says it installed busybox. I downloaded the separate busybox app from the market. That app has a popup saying that a nand unlock is necessary for the app to work. When I run it in spite of the popup, it says the device is rooted, but can't find busybox. A whoami command in adb will indicate that I'm not. I went though adb to reinstall busybox. But whenever I try to run any significant commands (eg su) it gives me a permission denied error. Googling permission denied gives me a myraid of possible causes, but it seems I'm getting far afield. I just want to get rid of the bloatware for now.
Is there another program to root this thing? Did I just miss something incredibly obvious?
hello, I recently just rooted this beast, and was wondering when, why, and how often i should clear out the dalvic cache

You shouldn't ever need to unless you are installing a ROM that requires it. the Dalvik Cache is the Java VM that Android Runs on and it does a very good job of keeping itself cleared. It does lots of Garbage collection on its own.
gotcha! thank you
First off, this is not my fix and I take no credit for it - I am just passing it on. Many thanks to xguntherc for posting the original fix, and KorbenD for pointing me in the right direction on Titanium Backup.
Their posts, as a reference:

I will summarize the Titanium Backup solution, as that's the one I had gotten to work. The non-TB solution did not work for me, but still relevant as some people have gotten it to work in cm:
- Get a copy of Titanium Backup and sideload it (free version is fine). http://matrixrewriter.com/android/
- Make sure the Market is working with your Google ID, of course.
- Go into Settings -- Applications -- Manage Applications and Force Stop both the Market and Google Services Frameworks apps.
- In Titanium Backup, go into "Backup/Restore", look for "Google Services Framework 2.2", click on it and then choose "Wipe Data". Then go back to the home screen.
- Run the Market app. You should get an error (that's a good thing, as that's what we want. If you don't get an error, re-try the steps above until you do).
- Reboot, and wait at least a minute after the OS is up to let things stabilize.
- Run the Market again. You should see an immediate difference.
EDIT: You might have to do one more reboot to get apps to actually download and install. I had this issue, but it might have just been me.
I tested this on TnT 1.02, but keep in mind that my TnT is further modded so results may vary. Good luck!
It worked!!! Thanks a million my friend for posting this.
Works on Zpad 1106
Working very nicely on v1 build of the zpad clean V1.0 Thanks this is great!
Updated apps!!! rockplayer is now working he he.... I'm like a kid in a candy store Nice find man
Works perfect on 6.1 beta!!! Thanks!
This doesn't seem to work on a rooted stock g-tablet. I also tried the Titanium Backup method, but no luck. It does give me the Market terms of use on first run.
You guys are going to force me to use a modded firmware! I still want to wait and see what ViewSonic/Flextronics comes out with for an update.

Seems this device may steal a lot of the Archos 101's thunder for mid to higher end Android users, since easy to root and a LOT more powerful. Apparently both devices have the same display too. Need to see the Archos 101 in "person" to confirm this, but Youtube vids show the same weak angles.
Talk about irony. Archos talks smack and is a month and a half late (even later for 2.2), only to be beat to and in channels by a device with no smack talk. Ironic.

Did you start Market after each reboot? Or did you just reboot three times.
OTA: Using the vanilla post over the air update to... 2638(?) I think?
Tried Market everytime. And each time it came with error screen.
Last one came populated
Hope it helps
I don't seem to be able to get the desired results, no matter how many times I reboot.
If the ViewSonic update doesn't give a decent market, I will reset the device and start over. I'm still not convinced that I need to install a custom ROM.

The Viewsonic update is going to be a device reset, for all intents and purposes - that's why I'm not making any mods until that comes out.

Is my Titanium Backup not installed properly? (first time ever trying to use it, I'm a total n00b on all of this) I get to Backup/Restore, but don't see any sort of Google Framework entry. Is there something I need to run first?

I sideloaded Market, didn't use the TNT/gapps loader. So perhaps that's my problem. (Though I don't see any apps listed in Titanium Backup/Restore. Maybe it has something to do with the error I get about "BusyBox works but the 'su' command does not elevate to root" when I open it.)
(Can't do the YouTube Market fix, either, because I have no option in the TnT Settings / Applications to Clear Data--only Clear Cache is there)
I imagine I'll be going to TNTlite pretty soon, but I was waiting for the OTA for.... no particular reason, really.
Thanks.
This worked great for me using tntlite 2.0, but this step "- Go into Settings -- Applications -- Manage Applications and Force Stop both the Market and Google Services Frameworks apps." the manage applications buttton was missing.. the actual button I used was System Applications.. otherwise the instructions worked. also be patient when you are wiping data in titanium backup, after hitting the button it does take a while before it will show a popup saying "data wipe complete"

Helium hasn't work properly for me since Nougat was released. It backs up a few apps then errors out. I can only get 20 or so apps backed up before it fails. I've emailed the developer but no answer so I think he's stopped supporting Helium.
What I do now is use Helium to backup up a few apps that I need to keep the data for then use SmartSwitch for the rest of my apps. Helium still restores apps & data correctly.
I was able to run Helium.
I was using ADB to connect to the Note 8, and then was able to run Helium. BUT the app that I need to backup is blocking the backup... seems that only Titanium can do the job....
Its crazy to think that in 2018 Android still cannot have a non-rooted app to backup all data from apps on a phone. I do not understand why Google or Samsung don't have this done yet. I have also tried Helium with partial success, but like previous comments, it too fails after a while. I have tried everything on the book and it always fails at some point. Very frustrating. There are plenty of apps that will backup your APKs by themselves but none that I know of that back up all data on all the apps. I've even tried ADB commands which don't seem to work correctly either.

TB needs to be able to work without root though.... otherwise you are comparing apples and oranges/ The app has been around forever. It needs to figure this out even if it has to involve connecting to a pc.
Backing up with root regardless of Titanium or not is much easier.
Agree 100% with Amir77's post
I've been trying out Helium, in order to get some of my app data ported from my non-rooted Sony stock Android Xperia XZ to my rooted Xperia Z (with LineageOS running on it), all I can say is that it was a pain in the ass to get it working on my XZ, but it eventually worked, and now I'm like stuck on my Z; Helium just keeps loading and loading and nothing happens.
So yeah, I agree, Titanium Backup needs to work without root as well. Xperia Transfer Mobile doesn't allow receiving app data (and other stuff) to non-Sony devices, and not even to Xperia devices with custom-ROMs, so I'm pretty much stuck here. If I get this working, I'll only be using rooted devices with custom-ROMs on them, and never bother with stock Android from Sony (or any other OEM). If this taught me something, it's that custom-ROMs mean freedom and power to the individual. Of course I knew that before this app data ordeal, but this was the final nail in the coffin for OEM stock Android (proprietary crap!).
I was doing a data migration Via Titanium backup for my new Razer 2 from a OnePlus 6 and decided to try it's trusted face restore. I had tried magisk modules and apk downloads from other websites when I found out it wasn't available out of the box. I'll add the apk itself and the titanium files. Let me know how it works with just the apk. And if the bare apk doesn't work use titanium back up and let it restore as a system app.
EDIT:
Time to resurrect an old thread, I removed the app and tried it again using the packages I provided and ran into the same issue. Attached below is a titanium backup of my new working app. If you cannot get it working with the attached zip download the latest NANO Open GAPPS package available at https://opengapps.org/. I got it working again by installing the nano package. Let me know how it works guys ?
And here's a zipped file with the titanium backup

app cannot be installed.
As of now read the updated instructions and you should be set on getting trusted face working. Quick summary is install the nano GAPPS package and it will appear in settings -> security -> smart lock. I think the install via app method in the original post didn't work because there were missing libraries that the package installs.
Smart locks do not have face recognition. (Have you received a security update in the last six months? This system cannot be updated in China.)?

What's everyone using for full backup and restore ?
Quite regularly I've been flashing fastboot between chinese , global ,Eu stable ,Eu weekly and developer preview android 12 and usually Its a pain in the ass to reinstall the apps

Is there anything like a Nandroid backup possible that's works reliably ?
I haven't flashed roms regularly in several years, back in the day we used to use clockwork mod and TWRP but these are not available yet...
