Last week I was watching a US TV program in which I noticed that several people from all over the US pronounced "Houston" as "How-ston". How stunned I was. Just like in 1995, when I ordered a bunch of routers and my supplier wanted me to believe that "row-ter" was the correct pronunciation.
I'm old enough to remember those historical words "Houston, the Eagle has landed". Houston sounded like you-ston from Neil Armstrong's mouth, and the whole world knew what he was talking about.
Remember that song "Get your kicks on Route 66"? Route, not rowte.
It didn't take much Googling to find out that these changes in pronunciation are the deliberate work of ignorant language purists who believe that English should sound as if there are no foreign influences whatsoever. Route and Houston sound too French by their opinion, English does have the ou that sounds like ow (indeed, like in "sound") so lets put that pronunciation wherever we can...
The very English unavoidable word YOU as far as I know is in no dialect ever pronounced as "yow". Yes, it is historically related to the French "vous".
So, should you perform the same rape to it as to Howston and rowte?
Take an etymological dictionary and see: every word in any language has its roots in other languages. The original English language was Gaelic, then came the Saxons, then the Romans, next the Normands and Vikings, then French, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese influences etc. It's a historical fact that victors in wars and successful business nations have a dominant influences on other languages.
If native English speakers start trying to deny that by raping their own language and turning it into something artificial it might well end up on the pile of artificial, hardly spoken, rudimentary languages like Esperanto, Interlingua and Ido.
Route, You, Router, Houston. They all sound the same in English. However we got to the English language, as you mentioned, then that is it.
If Americans or other countries want to pronounce them differently then that is their choice, but as long as you know what you want to say and how, and the various ways of saying it differently...
Any changes you want to make won't happen overnight though. I could take generations to get it right, if indeed it was ever wrong, as there are always going to be cultural differences.
Of course, I'm probably just wibbling here. So I'll go back to the forums
HNY BTW

Happy New Year to you and all
I do get the impression that the US is actually trying to create its own language overnight. And I'm very sorry to see/hear that more and more native speakers of the Queen's English are actually very susceptible for US influences.
I think that the US's influence on language is more prevailant than we would probably like to think. Mostly down to satellite news coverage and worldwide distribution of media...

Yes, IKWYM Maggy
I would be interested in the result if America had to pay $9 a gallon of petrol or diesel and $4 a gallon of Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG). I think this roughly works out correct by the exchange rate?!
that sounds funny. i also hate the fact that some americans pronounce iraq like I-rack or I-ran for iran... just ridiculous... the whole world & the population of those countries says ee-rack or ee-ran. geez, just listen to yourselves speak! heheheh

I'm sorry, but I don't believe that's anywhere near funny. The US idea of free trade still means the US has the right to sell US goods to whom they approve as buyers at the price set by the US; the US has the right to buy what the US believes it needs at the price set by the US. Countries who don't like to play by those rules shouldn't be surprised if the US finds an excuse for war...

US always finds excuse for a war that they did want to, if you want example look at Iraq, the reason was so-called WMD but it was just myth than fact, where in North Korea there are nuclear weapons that I'm considered WMD but they didn't take any action (yet, but look like they wont)
You say eether and I say eyether,
You say neether and I say nyther;
Eether, eyether, neether, nyther,
Let's call the whole thing off!
You like potato and I like potahto,
You like tomato and I like tomahto;
Potato, potahto, tomato, tomahto!
Let's call the whole thing off!
But oh! If we call the whole thing off,
Then we must part.
And oh! If we ever part,
Then that might break my heart!
So, if you like pajamas and I like pajahmas,
I'll wear pajamas and give up pajahmas.
For we know we need each other,
So we better call the calling off off.
Let's call the whole thing off!

I'll order oysters and cancel the ersters.

Hello all,
I am in the hospitality business and organise events for a number of blue chips – in short my company is the best in the business.
I get good rates on hotels, restaurants and have excellent connections for all things conference throughout Europe. So if Italy, Spain, Portugal, South Africa, Uk or Ireland is a possible venue for the proposed event, I will be happy to get involved. I am a big fan of XDA.
Work is on going on our website just now so I am aware that a number of pages need updating... its in the hands of the HTML engineer... link in my signature if ya wanna have a look at what we do.
Best,
J
This would be pretty cool however i've never seen it work out in any other forum. I think the best thing to do would be to create a poll and see where most people are located. Say there's a bundle in California, then we could have one in LA or some place close to all Californians. Same thing for other states, countries, even cities, etc. We could then all share our experiences. As for me, i'm in Southern California, hence the reason i used it
More or less this event might take place in the US or somewhere in Europe...only few asian are here...
It is a nice idea. Make it a convention and invite some guest speakers to show off the future of mobile devices, have reps from HTC and others perhaps like Sony, Motorola, Nokia, Jabra, etc... showing off newest gadgets and gear - Workshop seminars and stuff like that. It could be a fun time to meet some of our members in person, talk, show off our devices and envy the other person's device and a good learning opportunity as well.

it won't be an eyeball anymore. It will look like a convention, a meeting, etc. And that will be boring because everyone should be formal. Just an "ORDINARY' but "GRANDacious" eyeball.. exclusively fro XDA-DEV members and if you like we can invite M$ as our guest speaker..LOL
Just a regular GRAND EYEBALL, just to meet each and everyone here at XDA-DEV. No paper works, no signing up just beer and phones and girls too...

Agree with the poll
Starting form there we can see how many would like to attend and where most people is located
But I must say that I agree with Daveshaw that the best place should be where all this started: Amsterdam!
So who is going to create the poll?
Yeah, Amsterdam would be great! And there will be raffle promos and HTC Devices giveaways courtesy of all xda-dev's moderators and admins... Come one let's make this happen.
Great poll!
LOL
Last option looks pretty cool!
hehehe if that last option wins...you got to pay my expenses going to your place!

just a cent from a newbee, i hope this great idea will happen sooner...
i agree however that safety, next of course to resources, is definitely the issue needed to be considered by anyone else. but who's safe nowadays? i dont think there's a better place than our own abode (just be sure our better half is out.. lol)..
a little clarification though about Philippines vis a vis Abu Sayaff (ASG). ASG concentrates mostly in northern part of Mindanao and now being relentlessly pursued. on the otherhand, there are great places in the Philippines particularly in Luzon & Visayas, although as i've said cant be considered safer that our homes. But on the brighter side, your 1$ to Php47.++ is quite noteworthy of consideration.... more than double the fun i guess
Btw, considering the "safety" issue as quoted, i voted for the last option (peace orb...)
cheers...

Long time downloader, first time poster, I hope nobody minds me diving in with a sizable request.
My girlfriends dad, Keith, has made it to the final five contestants on Virgin Atlantic's Sir Richard Branson Lookalike Competition, and I'd like for you all to have the chance to place your vote.
We've started falling behind on the votes and after all the effort we've put in (radio coverage, papers, etc) we'd be gutted if he didn't win, as the prize is a trip to New York, attending the Virgin 25 Year Anniversary dinner, and Keith has promised to give up smoking, too.
While this competition is taking place on Facebook, I implore those without accounts to sign up and participate. Details on how to vote can be found on this handy page:
http://www.shiftrunstop.com/skels/bransonalike/
While you can obviously vote for anyone you like, we hope you'll see the resemblance as much as we do, and vote for Keith.
If you do place your vote for Keith, please say so below and I'll be sure to get Keith to thank you personally on Facebook. If you can spread the word a little, that would also be fantastic.
Also, if anyone has an look-a-likes in their family, feel free to post them so we can have our own little vote for the best one.
so, i'm curious how the users of xda think about the charlie hebdo attack of last week?
i think the UN should compile an army force and send them out to the middle east to prevent the terrorist groups
from traveling further and try to prevent groups from attacking innocent and harmless civillians (anywhere in the world)!
i believe the people of Isis and Al-qaeda should be taken out by force! honestly i don't approve of any violence! however in this
case the diplomatic way didn't had any positive result! therefore for the first time i'm saying yes to open fire! obama and other worldleaders should
finally put action to their words! these terroristgroups are an absolute thread to freedom of speech and expression!
so please give youre opinion and you're thoughts about this awful tragedy
(sorry for my broken english) i'm dutch :silly:
my condolances to the victims and family of the fallen!
je suis charlie
And as such the victims will have died in vain. Charlie Hebdo stood for freedom of speech through humour. They abhorred violence.
Murdering others because you don't agree with their ideas, however controversial they may be, makes you no better than those who murder others because they disagree with their ideas.
Murdering innocent people because you're upset over a cartoon is pure cowardice. It's not brave, it doesn't make you a hero. It makes you a pathetic coward.
But answering violence with more violence isn't the answer. That's how this whole mess started in the first place.
The problem here is religion. For as long as history can remeber, people have been slaughtering innocents in the name of some fictitious god. Christianity is no better, or have people forgotten about the crusades?
Cue more butthurt people now painting a target on my head just for saying that. Freedom of speech kids, it works both ways. You get to preach about your god to those who don't want you to, and we get to ridicule it. If we aren't allowed to ridicule it, you're not allowed to preach to us. It's both sides of the blade.
Religious followers being upset because someone drew their fictitious figurehead is as ridiculous as all of us going on a murderous rampage because someone drew the Android robot with a pink hat. But people are so brainwashed from birth that they can't see the sheer idiocracy of what they're doing.
That is what lies at the heart of this. But nobody wants to see it. All the imams have condemned the attack, but not a single muslim is willing to take a good hard look at their religion and see that it needs to change. In the west we have learned to accept (the hard way) that there are others who believe different, and we have learned to share our lives with them. We accept that someone won't pray at dinner, that someone won't thank a god every evening. Now it's time for muslims to make that growth as well.
What none of them realized is that those controversial catroons weren't meant as an insult.
The west learned through Apartheid that a seperate society doesn't work. We adapted.
The French shared their country, their lives and their culture with the muslims who came to live in France. They took them into their schools, their busses, their shops, their homes. They gave them the same rights and liberties as citizens.
Charlie Hebdo welcomed them into their lives by sharing their humour with them.
And as a reward for their acceptance, they were murdered.
And that is unacceptable. It is also why there is now such a backlash. If you come to live in our counties and want to share in our lives and become. A part of our society, you can't cherrypick the parts you want. It's all or nothing. You want the right to practise your religion in our society, then we retain the right to practise our humour.
I have gained a newfound respect for mayor Aboutaleb. That man should be an example to all muslims.

A wonderful humanist once said an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.
Then I look at history the Christian crusades where many were murdered. Centuries later into the 21st century where Muslims, and I'm not meaning all Muslims, have the spotlight in committing many heartless acts against humanity. The cost of human life..................... the torture ,abuse, deprivation or murder of a human being there is never an excuse for that. I'm assuming these individuals have a built up, or have instilled in them, a hatred for the western way of life and use religion as an excuse to commit atrocities.
Apatheid indeed did not work, several of my friends who are Caucasian have worked in South Africa and it was an unsafe place to be for them.
There will be a balance for both, I'm thinking 2 or 3 lifetimes away. Hope is almost always a positive thing.
I have Muslim friends, some I have known most of my life and they are very different to what I have seen in the media.
I think I have written enough I'm emotionally drained.
Round and round we go
Political threads aren't really something that we allow. To much potential for emotions to get out of hand resulting in flaming of members.

Just feel like I need to get this out there, theres lots of stuff going on with E-Cigs, I one day would like to quit smoking with E-Cigs, or at least have the "healthier option".
But there are so many states and officials and big tobacco trying to get rid of them, or stop their innovation, there really is a WHOLE lot of mis information and conception about E-Cigs and vaping devices that it just kills me, really, don't judge it just because you read one article on G+ or you saw a report on news, most of those are twisted and misleading. Anyway, there are so many people here on xda that I thought maybe a good place to spread the word, I know a lot of you smoke, so maybe this is a way I can also help you decide. Here is a good video to watch, and there are many more about vaping on youtube, just look them up.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4oFQ3w3Znk
It's sad that the world revolves around money, so the big companies spread so many fake facts... In Hungary the government wants to make laws against e-cigarettes, because in Hungary you can ONLY buy regular cigarettes in the "National tobacco shops". People realized that vaping is healthier and cheaper than regular cigarettes, so the Hungarian vaper community grows day by day, so less people buy cigarettes. It's absurd that the government is against the people's health.
