So far in last 2 months I bought 6 xda's. I upgraded all of them with rom 4.01.16 eng. I was very happy with them except one thing, they don't see my 256MB SD card. I also have IPAQ 3955 and that card works fine in it but on my XDA it's not recognized. I hope that somone knows why?
easy, you see, a pc is capable of using many storage formats, as for the xda, only a few, i beleive its the 16bit fat table format.
sometimes its the other way around, a card only works on an xda, and not a pc.
if you can, get another sd, format it, and check what type of formatting the xda does. and then modify the sd
good luck.
I tryed to format 256MB card both ways FAT16 and FAT32 and still dosen't work. However, 128MB card works as FAT16 and FAT32.
did you try formatting it with storagetools or pocketmechanics on the xda ?
that often helps people
I found this link
http://sdprob.aximsite.com/theproblemlist.htm
Some PDA's seem to have a problem with some SD's. In general the "made in china" SD's are most sensitive. Although our XDA is not mentioned in the list maybe this is your problem????

I have a brand new XDA IIs and I just find it impossible to access the memory card, The O2 instruction book is useless. Can anyone tell me how to access the card. My friend has an old XDA and he can see and write to the card no problem so I know it is not a faulty card.
Thanks
Where are you looking for it?
Does it appear in the memory section of the Settings area?
Also, when you open file explorer and navigate to my device - you should see a Storage Card folder.
If its not there, try soft resetting the device and try it again.

Hi, if I use the file explorer I see storage but it only shows the internal memory, same in system when I click on memory only shows internal and not the card, yet the card works fine on my Mio pocket pc? Hope you can help

I hope yours is not a unique problem pertaining to your device. Else it might be a faulty SDIO slot. Did you test with another SD card?
Your SDBUS driver is designed to support detection of SD, USB, CF, CDROM, DVD and Hard Disk, and it should be ACTIVE under the registry entry HKLM\Drivers\Active\X (where X denotes a number) with
"Key"="\\Drivers\SDCARD\\SDBusDriver"
Perhaps you can ask the others for a copy of the CAB file to reinstall the SDBUS drivers?
Worst come to worst, you may have to rely on your warranty support.
Problem solved
Don't have the answer as to why, but my 512 SD works fine. The 1GB works in a friends XDA but not in my IIs.
Thanks to the two of you that offered help.
I have an issue with my new SD cards as well, but its in a Himalaya.
The problem is a very poor performance of the SD card in real life.
The benchmarks I ran show a good performance, but when using the card my Himalaya frequently locks up.
See this thread.
As I have the issue with at least 2 cards (Sandisk 512MB and Extrememory 1GB) and I do not have an issue with my Kingston 256MB I am suspecting the slot itself . . .
Everytime i insert my card it asks me if i want to format it to make it readable? - even though i formatted it in my computer. Also i cant write anything to it when my 8125 recognizes it in a slot. The cars is SanDisk so it should be a good quality.
I'm using a 2GB SanDisk card with no trouble at all. I _didn't_ format it on my PC but rather used it straight out of the box.
Do you still have the same message if you let the 8125 format the card?
i tried doing that and it says that the phone cannot recognize the card.... the weird thing is that the card goes in crooked and the fit isnt perfect i have to push it in hard.....
Quite a few people reporting a problem like this - seems to be fixed with sktools or storage tools (google them demos allow you to format - install on device) and format card on device to fat16.

I have the same problem before, i tried to format it to fat16 and the 2gb minisd was recognized as 1gb instead of 2, tried every solution from getting compatible version of a card reader to re-format using fdisk via DOS., Called the manufacturer and they we're happy to replace it. They advised that it should be re-formatted as fat only and not fat16 via DOS using the card reader.
good to know as i just bought a 2gigger.
The problem is that you formatted it on your PC. USe SKtools to format it on your device and you should be all set. I think the demo version of SKtools allows you to do this stuff.
i use my 2 GIG since i bought the phone almost 4 months ago without any hassle.
Just used the card out of the box without formatting it.
This issue is reported several times and is caused by using a not compatible cardreader on the PC to format the card.
A lot of the (even usb 2.0!!) cardreaders is not capable of reading over 512MB memory cards. If you use a 1Gb or 2GB card on such a reader it will probably say the card is not formatted. WHEN you do format the card using that reader, you wil make it unusable.
 Make sure you format the card via a compatible cardreader to avoid this.
 If you get a 'card not formatted' message, try to read from / write to it in your device first (before attempting to format)
Just got my 2GB card....MDA won't read it.
Camera won't read it.
PC can read it. It was Fat32, I reformatted it to Fat...still a no go in the phone or camera, but works on the PC....what gives?

I have a SanDisk 2Gig card. It worked fine right out of the package. Haven't had any problems with any of the ROMs I've run on my 8125.

my 2GB card works fine, except for the fact that it's stuck in there.. i need to tak it apart and fix the spring loaded latch somewhere in there..
I got a 2GB from Amazon: OEM 2GB MINISD Mini Secure Digital (SD) Card but it did not work on my Cing 8125.
TopRam
I have been using a 2GB miniSD made by TopRam. Works in the 8125 and with my USB card reader no problem since day one. 8125 recognizes the entire 2 gigs (well minus just a few bits...about 99% of the card). Got it off eBay while I was waiting for the phone in the mail. Never needed formatting or anything..worked straight from the package. I was a little worried at first that it wasn't one of the "well known" brands of cards, but there have been no problems whatsoever.
I'm using the Transcend 2Gb 80x MiniSD. Works like a charm.
Keep in mind that SLC flash chips (mainly made by Samsung and a.o. used by Transcend and Mobymemory) have longer lifetime, are faster and consume less power than MLC flash chips. Disadvantage is that SLC is more expensive. Bought my 2GB for approx 62 euros.
My 16gb sandisk card got corrupted yesterday and apparently it has something to do with this file EncFiltLog. I cannot copy anything to the card, cannot delete anything from the card and cannot format it. I found the solution in Blackstone forum...but as a kaiser owner I cannot benefit from it because we don't have DISK MODE on kaiser. Apparently it's been cooked in a few new roms for kaiser but Disk mode doesn't work. Has anyone successfully fixed this on kaiser? I,ve spend 60 pounds on the card and I don't feel like buying another one especialy if the problem might occur again.

PROBLEM:
Now, the problem all started when try to format the micro SDHC on the phone or on the PC with card reader.
Tried with differ format program also low level not worked.
DONT USE THESE!!! Waste of time!!!
SOLUTION:
So after doing some thinking about the situation, I figured that there was a problem with the card inserted and find the file EncFiltLog on it.
It is the WM 6.1 encription file. You can't delete, move files from or in to the SDHC.
The best way to solve this issue, as the hard-reset DOES NOTHING to fix this issue, would be to have windows hopefully find the connected device and format it. Here are the EASY steps which DO NOT involve using a dozen computers and has provided the same result EVERY time; which is a working on my 8gig memory in my HTC HD.
1. Connect the HD to the computer and select DISK DRIVE as the option on the on-screen popup on your phone. Don’t select ACTIVE SYNC. If you miss it, then go into your phone and press START>SETTINGS>CONNECTIONS TAB>USB to PC and select the bullet of DISK DRIVE and hit ok.
2. On your computer, (USING A WINDOWS XP MACHINE), go into your "My computer"
3. A window for will open with two columns.(If not, change the view to "Group") We are looking at the RIGHT side right now. In there is has three categories, and we are only focusing on ONE of them. LOOK for STORAGE which should be the center category.
4. Click with right to the desired "Storage device; A: ; D: E;", it will take a minute or two depending on your computer speed and environment to populate your hard drive and connected memory devices.
5. You will eventually see your PHONE internal storage listed. IT WILL TAKE SOME TIME BECAUSE YOUR PHONE INTERNAL STORAGE IS CORRUPTED!
***BE SURE WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING AT IS IN FACT YOUR PHONE AND NOTHING SOMETHING ELSE LIKE YOUR MAIN HARD DRIVE OR SOME OTHER STORAGE DEVICE WITH IMPORTANT FILES ON THERE***
****I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU FORMAT THE WRONG DEVICE***
6. Choose format and let it format the drive. This should also take a few minutes. Select FAT32 and name is whatever you want! Let this finish COMPLETLY!

I received a corruption error a few months back because windows media player decided to sync my media files to my storage card. what error did you receive when you attempted to format it? I do not want to sound arrogant but when you placed the card into the micro sd/sd adapter did you unlock the adapter?

Yes that was the first thing i did. I tried formatting it on my laptop with 2 different apps and also on my PPC without success. I'm able to copy about 90% of my files to my laptop's harddrive but cannot save anything to the card or format it. The problem occured yesterday when I was creating a new Word document on my PPC... it wouldn't save to storage card and some error window poped out. Since then the phone has been a mess. It was barely usable because I had a lot of programs on my memory card which were used all the time by the ppc, had to hard reset and it's fine now of course until I try to browse files on my card.
I'm guessing that you didn't have any problems formatting your card?
Windows native formatting program gave this error: Windows cannot complete formatting
SDFormatter: the memory card is write-protected. please release the write protect switch"(have tried formatting the card with the switch in both positions to no avail)
some ppc formatting app "told" me to check whether any programs placed on SDHC card are being used by the system at the moment
I had the same problem with my 8 GB SDHC card. I spend few days trying to find solution. Most likely you card is gone for good. There is only one thing that I didn’t try and that maybe could work is to format card on Linux. They said it helps in some of the cases. Good luck with your card but be ready for the worst.

Yes this doesn't look too good....I think the only thing I can do now is to look for a Kaiser rom with working DISK MODE and try to use HD users solution.
SDFormatter V2 from Panasonic
I once had the probleme and I did use the mentionned program.
It did solved my issue.
You should be able to find it for free on internet.

Perhaps this is different than I've experienced, but multiple times my SD card has become unreadable on my Tilt, and I just run a disk check on it, it finds weird/bad stuff, then it's fine again when it's done.
Not sure what's going on with that, as I've never made any sense of the chkdisk files that are created that are parts of the bad data.

Thanks all, I've tried that Panasonic formatting program hell I have tried at least 10 other programs for formatting, repairing and checking(chkdisk didn't help either) cards none of them have worked. And the most annoying thing is that I sent an email to sandisk on thursday last week and they haven't replied yet...I'm going to claim warranty replacement.
Do you have a digital camera? If so try and format with that as i had a simlar problem again a SanDisk to which the computer would not format, the phone would not format yet i used Fuji DSLR to format and it worked.

Crap...I do have a digital camera but it uses XD cards they are of different shape than SD's. I'll try to find someone with a SD capable digital camera.
Thanks.
Ok looks like my dad has a SD camera one problem though it is some ancient device it's not SDHC capable. Will it work and if it will, won't I waste my card in some way?

Sounded like last ditch efforts to me
to bad ther is no followup on this matter, but i would advise a digital camera to. it always helped me out. lowlevel format on a nikkon dslr!
Have you tried this little baby.... http://www.cnetx.com/format/download.asp
The trial allows you to format without purchasing, but it's worth buying for the next time it happens - I was stuck with all other programs not working until this one.
Good luck.
Ps. Sorry if it doesn't work and I get your hopes up!!
Had a similar problem 2 days ago with my micro SD SanDisk Class 2 8Gb that I use on my HD. Became corrupted after trying to erase some movies while connected to my PS3.
Tried this: www[dot]sdcard[dot]org/consumers/formatter [didn't work: Micro SD write protected]
Tried GParted on Ubuntu, didn't work!
Tried MiniTool Partition Wizard and other XP formatting tools, didn't work!
Tried formatting with the SD inside the Blackstone and connected to PC, didn't work!
Got VERY frustrated and bought a new cheap micro SD 8Gb class 6+adaptor [1300Yen, about 15Eur]
Now I followed the Digital camera trick, and formatted the corrupted microSD in less than 5 sec!!!
I think it doesn't matter what phone you use the SD in, any relatively recent digital camera will do the trick for you.
THANK YOU
I searched but only found people having trouble mounting their cards. Ever since I partitioned my 8 gig class 6 card, my computer won't recognize the FAT32 partition. It reads it when I mount in with my G1, but I'd really like to be able to use it with the card reader again. Has anyone else had this problem?

here's the scoop some sdcard readers do not read the high capacity cards well.
i have 2 pc's with sdcard readers one cant read any class 4 or 6 devices after formatting to fat32 my other which is newer read all cards no matter what parttion is on it. if you have the 1 gig card that came with the g1 that will work fine for flashing devices.
Format your card. That should fix your issue. Be sure and copy what folders you can, to back up.

that's kinda a hard one since the sdcard reader won't read the card and formatting through android still causes the issue it's the sdcard reader i've had this issue and using a different reader fixed it.

Ah, good to hear! I thought it was just one partition that was missing. I had one really bad issue with a corupted sd card that won't read. The sd reader was good but claimed the card was not there. After reinserting and clicking quick format about 50 times, the pc finally recognized the dead card and formated it. After that, no major issues since. This was with my old HTC Wizard. Old mini sd card. I love the micros but are kinda hard to handle (literally) and mobile phones have finally settled on one format (used to be a combo of mini and full size sd and the occasional micro (newer) ). Plus, brand name matters somewhat... sansdisk is pretty good. Pny is also pretty good for a cheaper brand. Class also matters now which is kind of odd but makes sense. Kind of like hard drive read/write speed. Tech is always changing and you can get left in the dust after 6 month of no research. Fun though... will always be my hobby and my job foremost. Sorry for long-winded reply... lol
Hi,
got a strange problem here.
i bought a raspberry pi kit from Maplin (£80) which included a class 6 transcend 4gb SD card.
the card was working fine until one day i went to boot the RPi and it didnt boot at all, no ACT light flash... nothing!!
i took the SD card out and re-flashed a backup image of my Rasbian to the card and still nothing.
i downloaded NOOBS and tried that after formatting with the SDformatter 4.0. still nothing.
I used my camera SD card in the PI and it boots fine!
any ideas.
I have tried RPI-UPDATE and erasing all the partitions off the sd card and formatting again.
I just have no idea why it wont work.
Bad se card i guess.
Discard it and be happy
The sad card works ok in my camera. I took a few hundred photos on it and it didn't complain!!

Your card is just bad, otherwise it would work in the pi, maybe it works well in the camera but just not in the raspberry pi

You can refer to this list of SD card that is compatible with Raspberry Pi.
Google this keyword "raspberry pi sd card compatibility" click on the first link.
Sorry XDA not allowing me to post link
I had a similar problem. It worked in my camera but not the pi. On my mac in disk utility I tried secure erase (overwrite the card with zeros) and it said that the disk was indeed bad. The camera only uses parts of the disk, pi uses all of it. Try overwriting the disk with zeros, you may find out it is indeed bad. Hope that helps good luck

Thanks for all your help. I've tried overwriting with 0's and it never complained. I will try some sdcard checking software and see what that says.

tried the above.
Thanks for your help throughout the thread. I now have a second SD card that has died on me too! went out and bought a 16gb Sandisk which has worked for a while and now its stopped working all together. the Pi boots off another SD card I have lying around but not the 16gb, it was working one day then decided not to work the next, when the PI boots up I get no ACT light at all.
There has to be a fix for this issue, By googling I found a huge amount of people suffering from the same issues, some find resolutions by destroying the partitions on the card and re-formatting, others by simply re-writing the img. None of those solutions work on my 4gb and 16gb sd's now.
Is there any utilities out there that can properly test the flash memory for errors?
Cheers in advance.

So! After giving up on my Pi for quite some time i got bored and rather than install another rom on my phone i decided to actually check the RPi.
It seems the case i have been using has been pushing against the sd card which in turn has slightly damaged the sdcard slot. Applying a slight bit of pressure to the card slot when turning on makes the sd card work! Replacing the sdcard slot is easy peasy... time to get my soldering iron out! ☺☺☺
Thanks for all your help.
