I have been through several very long threads on this and several people have asked but no one ever answers. I am a big fan of the button mapping programs and want to be able to call up the HTC app which shows the currently running programs. I am not even sure what to call it, as I have seen it as X Button, and also as Task Manager. However, I am not looking for the settings menu Task Manager utility which is the full fledged program allowing some setting changes and adding programs to the excluded list, etc. Rather I am looking for the Pop Up menu that comes up when you tap and hold the close button. I have search my device for every .EXE and tried them all, yet I still can not figure out how to call this program directly. Is this not possible? Is it similar to a today plug in that requires you to be on the Tday screen to run it? Any help would be appreciated.
I believe Spb Pocket Plus can do this. It has a button mapper, but you can also set "OK" (Butto 4) to "[Close]" (from the default "<Ok/Close>") and that should work.
But thats way on the back of the phone when using the slide out keyboard.

Sorry I thought you were referring to the OK button below the jog dial. My bad.
It's not, really. There are three "OK" buttons. One on the faceplate, one on the left-hand side, and one on the slide out keyboard. I've use the new version of Pocket Plus to map the one on the face plate to "OK" with a press and "Close" on a long press. The button hesh is referring to is the one on the face plate (under the "End" button).
Of course, this is the TyTN II layout, so the Tilt may be different. Key point - there is a way to do what you want with Pocket Plus - map a button (any one you like) to "[Close Button Context Menu]" which is a function that Pocket Plus will add for you (it won't exist without it installed).
still not helping...
i have also read about 150 pages worth of posts to no avail on this topic and would greatly appreciate a solution. i think that some of you are missing the question entirely though so im going to give a crack at presenting the question a little bit clearer.
What we are trying to do here is map a hardware button to whatever process it is that brings up the "HTC X-Button" menu. The specific menu we want is the drop down that appears when the upper right corner is tapped from the today screen. the thread i got the app from originally i cant seem to find for some reason, but heres a link to one i did find link. Heres a screen shot.

we do not want to know if there is another task switching application with these features such as the spb product or any others.
thanks in advance for any responses and hope this clears things up a bit.
dislexicmofo has it right. I was looking to call the program "HTC X-Button" from a button instead of a stylis tap. The "HTC X-Button" does not show up as an application, and I can not figure out how to call it directly by another means. I am guessing it may depend on the today screen being in the foreground, however, I would like it to come up without any regard to the foreground application.
FWIW, I finally gave up and installed InClose, as it shows up as a program under the Applications List.
As for SPB, I like their stuff, just not enough to pay for it and I have had many compability problems in the past (although that was several iterations ago),.
So even if SPB did provide this feature, I was looking for a freeware variation.
I tried to ask this same question in the "Latest Cabs for Kaisers" thread stickied at the top:

i have installed HTC Task manager v2.00 (build 30740) from dutty's first post. (i can't seem to get the other one to install - which is fine). anyway, this task manager has a "quick menu" in the upper right hand corner of your today screen that you can click with your stylus and that lists all your running applications nicely. i would like to create a short-cut to this quick menu, but i'm not sure how to do it because it is just a part of the task manager program and not a program itself. Does anyone have any ideas? The reason I like this quick menu better than the list you get when you click on the task manager icon is because the list does not go away after you make a single selection. in other words, you can close out several programs from the list instead of having to bring the list back up after you close each application. any ideas?

It's awful not having a hotkey to the tasklist...
Can this simple thing not be done ?
EDIT: AE Button plus has sorted things out for me
I remember a softkey app back in the wizard days. This closed the program by holding the right softkey down. Forgot what it was called.

Smartskey. I use it almost purely for that reason alone. Press and hold the right softkey and it closes the current app like tapping the X. Or press and hold the left softkey and it opens the Start Menu (which really isn't needed on the Kaiser since there is a Start menu button already, but then you could remap that if you wanted).
you're not going to be able to do that. AS someone else said it is depended upong the today screen being in the foreground. The intent of the original app wasn't to be a task switcher, but just a simple task manager to be able to close app from the tapping the X button. That was the original design of ver1. Ver2 brought the additional buttons and the overall look, but it's still not a task switcher and it's hooked into the OS to work only when the today is present.
I know you don't want to hear this but SPB PP4 is the app that will do what you want, and it was designed to do what you want from it's creation. Not only can you pull down the task list in any app (not just today screen) but you can also map the PPT button to their alt+tab switcher, which works just like windows alt+tab combo.
I like the look of the HTC one and the size of the buttons within it, by I find myself using PPC4 more and more...
ya, me neither - i found "VBar" which i mapped to a hardware button and which initializes the X button pulldown, wherein you can switch tasks, close apps, or close the vBar itself (which has a kinda cheesy image-but not bad for free!) haven't figured out how to program it yet? . . . but works right out of the box.
ciao

FWIW, I wound up using AEB+, which, strictly speaking is not necessasy for my original question, but it allows you to assign an app close vs an app hide to the press and hold of the OK key. So essentially is does the same thing as the Softskey and more.
I then installed InClose Mobile. You CAN map this to the hardware button and it will open regardless of whether you are on the today screen or not. If you try it, be sure to turn off the HTC button as it will cause a conflict.
VJOkButt allows you to simulate a click on the screen.
I have used it in conjunction with pBar (a better replacement for HTC Task manager) or you can just assign a shortcut to pBar to a hardware button. This was the easiest way for me.
Is there a way to map the front-face "OK" button (button 4, I believe) to close the opened application without using some kind of extra button mapper?
Using Contacts to make a phone call and then having to close the contacts program afterwards without simply pushing a button is really annoying. Remapping the OK button to close applications entirely would be nice.
Basically the program has to do the following:
1- I want the RED (front facing) "call end" button to work like the Treo 750. So pressing it while in the Today screen switches off the phone, pressing it again switches the phone on. Pressing it while in an application takes you to the today screen.
2- After doing that then we don't need the hidden phone on/off button so we can make it into a silent/mute button. So a long press on this button while the phone is either on or off will put the phone in silent mode, also very similar to the Treo's profile slider.
Anyone reading this is up to the challenge?
Anyone here has any other requests? Let's make a list and see who is up to the challenge.

Not up to it, but why'd you want that. Switch phone/flight mode can be assigned to any hw button except call or call end, assign the same button(hold) for mute/unmute and there you are.
Call/end call buttons not being assignable is a hardware limitation, accordig to spb software house (pocket+).

Ok so how can I assign the mute/unmute to a hardware button as I can't find it in the settings--->buttons' drop down menu?
I use spb pocket plus to assign buttons. It has the mute option standard in its list of button tasks. There might be freeware apps that let you do the same, but I don't know them (as I allready had a copy of spb pocketplus from my previous windows mobile device)
Edit: AE Button plus seems to be a freeware app that can do what you want...

And if "hold" is a suitable alternative to mute, you don't have to do anything... pressing in the volume button toggles the call on/off hold. At least on my Tilt.

AE Button worked well. Now I can mute/unmute at a touch of a button. I haven't tried its full potential yet.
Thanks for the great tip.
Still though I wouldn't mind a power feature like the Treo. I do not like that itty bitty recessed power botton on the right...
On a side note I'm going to try and see if there is a reg key on the Treo I can copy to the Kaiser where when you are in PIE and hold the action button it pops up the IE menu. That's nice. Not sure why its only on the Treo. I guess for it's one handed nature... What, I don't get to use my Kaiser with a one handed nature in mind?...

Hmmm, that might be a useful map for AE button... for the side "ok" button, map a double-click to the left softkey, and press/hold to the right one (and single-click stock OK). Between that and the scroll wheel, that should make for some pretty easy one handed operation.
Just tested it.. works well, though the side OK button is a bit stiff/recessed to easily double-click with a thumb. May take some getting used to.
Hey guys,
I think i have found what your looking for. I also needed to toggle my Flight mode by a button because since most ROM versions of WM5 and WM6 Flight mode can`t be switched by tapping the signal meter at the top of the screen.
I installed this app and linked it to Button 6/Recording (Press & Hold) and now it switches Flight Mode On and Off. This is what i needed.
Look here: http://toosten.de/index.php?seite=sw&id=7
Have fun with it
One thing for now i noticed. When activating Flight Mode, it just turns off the Phone Signal and not BT when enabled. I am contacting the author of teh tool to see if some options can be added.
I loaded a touchit rom on my wing.. and it is so much better than default windows functionality.
One annonyance still remains though. When I am in a program (e.g. looking at contacts list), when I want to get out of the program, I have to reach all the way down to hit the 'end call' button (physical button with red telephone on it).
Other alternative is to click the close button on top right. But that can not be reached with a normal finger since it is so tiny.
So can there be a touch gesture which can make me exit quicker ? Or is there already one which I do not know about ?

Hi all,
On my Kaiser, if I forget to unmute my phone before starting TomTom 6, I can't actually adjust my volume. The trick I used with my 8125 was to go to the Today screen and tap the volume control. On the Kaiser, touching the screen brings me back to tomtom, even if the today screen is displayed.
I remember finding a replacement exe for TomTom that unmuted the phone when it started and restored your former setting when you quit, but I can't find it even though I've searched for an hour. Help?
Thanks!
-n.
When I forget to turn on the volume, I slide open my Kaiser and press the Fn key together with the folder button (bottom right). From there, you're able to adjust the volume
But I guess it is indeed better if the volume gets adjusted automatically...

It's that "Right Arrow" button. When you first press Fn (bottom left), all the blue symbols on your keyboard can be activated.
There is a blue icon of a folder on the Right Arrow key.
So press Fn and right arrow and you're in Windows again (and able to adjust the volume).
Then use your task manager to get back in TomTom.
Same problem for me with my Tilt. But, there's no folder icon on my keyboard to try your suggestion. The only way I've found is to exit TomTom, unmute the phone and start it again.
Anyone find a fix for use on the Tilt?

http://www.aximsite.com/boards/gps-talk/140969-tomtom-6-volume-override-loader.html
This loader unmutes your phone when you launch tomtom, and restores your mute when you close. (it's smart about restoring the previous state, so it won't mute if you weren't muted before launching tomtom)
Incidentally, I have some useful links in my del.icio.us bookmarks tagged with 'windowsmobile'
http://del.icio.us/osunick/windowsmobile
(disclaimer: I'm a product manager on del.icio.us)
Hitting the phone "Hang up" button works to get back to the home screen.. you can then tap the TomTom icon bottom right to bring it back.
Fully
Have you tried this? Getting to the home screen is not the problem, it's that touching any part of the screen, including the volume control, puts you back in tomtom, thus making volume changes very difficult.
Is my Tilt different than your Tilt?

Im not sure what you guys talking about.
The FN + Arrow key works.
The hang up key works as well.
I have my windows key set as file explorer that works(perfectly).
Im usingTomTom 6. I cant recall my version.
When Im in TomTom and active my todays page. Tom Tom will minimize at bottom task bar. It lets me change just about anything.
Not sure why you guys has problem, maybe you need to install HTC taskmgr to solve this issue. Because most of my working program will minimize at bottom, so I can have fast access to it.

This may depend on what build of Tomtom you have. As the OP says with some b uilds, even when you get to the tgoday screen using Fn buttons, the very next screen tap takes you back into tomtom.
However, as also pinted out above, pressing the red phone key works and you can then change the volume or any other task, BUT instead of returning to it using a Task Manager you just tap the tomtom icon that has appeared in the lower task bar.

My Tilt has the original AT&T ROM and I'm running TomTom 6.010.
The trick with the red phone key always minimizes TT6 to the lower task bar. But, I usually get dumped back into TT6 when I tap anywhere on the screen. Sometimes (rarely) it does let me unmute the speaker, but mostly not.
The Fn-arrow trick never works for me.
It's usually easier for me to quit TT6, turn on the speaker and then restart it. Of course, that means I have to wait for GPS to start up again.
mikechannon is right, some builds of tomtom allow you to change the volume once you are in the today screen, some builds will just bring you right back to tomtom with a tap on the taskbar.
for the builds that bring you back to tomtom on a screen tap, this is how i do it, hit ok or red phone button to get back to the today screen. when its at the today screen, i press the ie button to bring up ie, then you can tap on the volume icon on the taskbar.
and it doesnt have to be ie, can be just any app, you can even launch anything thats on the today screen, just as long as you dont tap on the taskbar

Anyone know if its the older or newer builds that allow the volume change to work properly?
You guys should really try that TTLoader app that i linked to earlier. It maxes out your volume and launches TomTom and restores your original volume settings when you leave.

It's a very lightweight app and doesn't actually take up space in your registry, so it has zero impact when not running and minimal impact when tomtom is running. You should try it.

So it can be simply reinstalled when I change roms (which I do a lot).

Guys,
Anyone know a way to tweak the time needed for the long press of the end key to take effect and lock the keypad?
At the moment it takes too long holding it down before it kicks in so it would be great to reduce the time and make locking the handset a bit easier.
Thanks

If you use advanced config and start it up...go into menu and comm settings..you can specify how long your connections stays on till it disconnects automatically. So you can use the button for locking the phone.
Or you could go into your battery settings and under advanced...specify how long you want the phone turned off ie locked if its not being used..goes from 40 secs to 5 mins.
Dont know if that will help but its the only thing i can think of.
I am also searching for a way to shorten the delay for both phone buttons. I would need about half the time...
I have the solution! At least, I'm satisfied with it.
Install AE Button Plus on your machine (http://ae.inc.ru/aebplus.php). It's not free, but it took away a lot of my annoyances lol.
You can assign multiple functions to any key. The way I've sorted it out now, is that a long press on the disconnect button shows up a TF3D menu, a double press brings up the Start menu and a triple press locks the device. And my triple press is definately faster then pressing it and holding it till it locks lol.
