Best things in life... - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

... are for free (at least until now!)
Here http://www.kiwisrus.net/MediaControl/install.htm
you can find a nice client server app that works over network (have tried bluetooth, but pretty sure it works also over wifi) and allows you to browse/control playback of Media on the Server PC.
The app is pretty simple, but works (have tried several other commercial trial solutions quite buggy).
Congrats to the coder and hope it stays free.
Check it out!

Well, I think I'll stick to NetRemote...even if it's not totally free, but still cheap.

MTeoR vs Tornado

Hello,
I am considering buying a WM smartphone and I am tossing between these two.
I would appreciate an honest opinion regarding these devices (which cost a lot here), especially by people who worked with both of them.
I could have gone with MTeoR, but the lack of WiFi bothers me
On the other hand, is Tornado considered old(?) now that MTeoR is out (and probably not supported anymore)?
Many thanks in advance.
I've had them both (still have actually  ), and to be honest, I can't decide which one to sell.
The Tornado is a great phone, and with the most recent firmware, quite bug free, and almost all software works without a hitch. I personally don't really use the wireless but GPRS works well. The only problem with the Tornado is that it's, IMHO, looking a little dated, and is also a bit plastic-y.
The Mteor is a great phone- it's one of those phones that you pick up and think "this feels nice" (bear in mind I'm someone who bought a Nokia 8800). Mostly it works really well, but there are a few teething issues- TomTom does not work perfectly, sometimes calls go thru to voicemail when there's a good signal, the battery life can be quite poor and I find the jogdial a bit irritating (when the phone rings, rocking the jog dial silences the call, so sometime I only get short rings when the phone is in my pocket). However, I like the quality of the phone (all metal construction, no squeeks, I think it looks good).
So overall, the Tornado- good, works well, genuine quad band (and I travel to the US a lot), wifi may be a bonus, lots of users (and hence support), but does not feel like a quality luxury phone. The Mteor- 3G is nice for data (but no vid calling), a bit buggy, but feels like a luxury, professional phone.
To be honest, I'll probably keep the Mteor- it plays music with better quality than the Tornado, plays my videos well, and Tomtom works well enough (just goes silent every so often).
Hope this helps you make your decision
Hi technogeek,
thanks for your report!
I also have a Qtek 8300 (which is a Tornado).
The main reasons why I did not consider switching to the Breeze were:
1. No WLAN (actually I use WLAN on 2 occasions: When I'm at home and relaxing or reading a newspaper or watching TV and something comes to my mind which I MUST google. Then I grasp the phone, which is connected to my Access Point and simply google what I want. Without the need to boot a PC or leaving the sofa or paying for GPRS and much faster. And when I am on a meeting at work for just the same purpose.) Going back from a WLAN phone (Tornado) to a non-WLAN phone is strange. I just wonder why HTC did that.
2. No Video Phone:
I am not using this on a daily basis that's true. But sometimes I lacked it (and it works great on a Nokia 6680 for instance). The Breeze isn't really cheap, one can well expect it to have VT. Actually the Dopod has!
3. Only 1.3mpx cam as has the Tornado. Well I have a good digital camera, but I only have the phone with me permanently, so I'd like some device capable of making usable snapshot or flipchart reports. Making a foto of a flipchart with 1.3mpx and adding it to a meeting minutes is ridiculous.
These are only 3 reasons, which were obvious, without having had the Breeze ever in my hands.
On all photos the device looks cute and I really regret that it lacks these features.
+++
The Tornado is however very reliable as a phone: With the AKU2 firmware I never experienced lockups and the speaker sound quality is loud and good during phone calls (it is low and poor on a HTC TyTN e.g.) and the screen resolution is excellent.
Can you confirm that the Breeze has an equal screen and sound quality than the Tornado ?
Best regards
ghl10000
P.S.
@technogeek:
Have you got the AKU2 firmware on the Tornado and maybe a non-WWE version of the Tornado?
I'd like to use Splashblog, the only photoblogger software for MS Smartphones, but the network connection does not work. Have you ever tried it yourself ?

Tilt & GPS and Internet

Within the next 2 or 3 weeks. I'm planing on getting a Tilt. For all of you already having one I need some info. I've never had a GPS device or Cell phone with that capability so please inform me.
I'm really not playing on using the GPS feature maybe just to play around with and see how it works.
Do I need to have a GPS plan on my account to use this feature, I'm not going to need directions, I just want it to show my location on a map?
Am I correct thinking if I don't use Navagation (Get Directions) feature then its only using my Internet connection?
Can I use any GPS software on the phone?
I'm just trying to make sure I wont be charge for something that I really don't need, just want to try out to locating function here and there. I think it would be fun to have.
GPS is free for using...having a program that usings GPS might not be free..such as tomtom garmin etc...there are going to be free programs such as googlemaps (correct me if i'm wrong)...but using the GPS is completely free and has nothing to do with the cellular provider.
GPS is free

You are pretty much correct.
To use "GPS" to connect to satellites to determine your location does not cost anything.
Applications like Google Maps and MS Live Search can determine your location and give you directions at no cost. They use your data connetion to download maps.
Other applications like Telenav (which you will have a link to download it on your Tilt) charge for downloading directions.
And other apps use pre-installed maps and do not require a data connection. These come in handy where reception is bad.
This is my first phone with these kinds of features, options and capabilities too Before this Kaiser..aka Tilt I had a Razor V3
You can disable your DATA connection through Comm Manager so it will never access or try to access your provider ( mines ATT/Media.Net)
I suggest doing that otherwise you'll find the charges on your bill and not even know you were using the service. Also you can block DATA through your provider and plan.
I did the 1 month free trail with telenav..it was ok but had problems and is slow since it's all server based ( data connection!!). Plus it will cost you about $10 per month..unless you sign up for years then it goes down to around $5 per month...that was not " attractive" to me
I now use and have used for 4 months Garmin XT..its pretty cool and I drive alot ( 3k miles per month ).
If you dont have DATA you cant cash in on gas prices either ( as well as all the Online Xtras )..and who doesn't think of those prices these days. Also no data means noTraffic unless you use a seperate FM reciever of some sort..
Garmin's not perfect, none of em are, but it's pretty darn accurate
Now if you wanna get some real cool media..like free cable TV on your phone that works very good when you have a data connection...lets talk about my Slingbox

Garmin's not perfect, none of em are, but it's pretty darn accurate It hasn't let me down yet. It has voice but does not say the street name in directions...I dont find that to be a problem. The map and route are clear and once you get use to it you should be fine without street names
Now if you wanna get some real cool media..like free cable TV on your phone that works very good when you have a data connection...lets talk about my Slingbox
I really don't need the GPS feature but would like to be able to try it out, mess with the trakking on it from a few projects I've seen. I rarely try some place to an area I've never been before so its not like I need the directions thing. The first thing I'll do is proably remove telenav from the phone just to make sure I don't accidently use it.
So aslong as I remove telenav, and I have my unlimited internet on my phone I should be all good.

VoIP (SIP) on Diamond

Did anyone try to use a SIP client on the Diamond?
Go and give a try Fring. Website: www.fring.com
Go to www.fring.com and give a try. It works for me
Hi,
Unlike any of the voip/sip apps ive tried on the diamond the only one working correctly, including usage of the internal speaker instead of the external one where the whole world can listen in on your conversation, ageet has managed to create a proper voip app.
http://www.ageet.com/us/products-agephone-mobile.htm
Enjoy
thankssss still looking for a good solution, fring and sjphone dont work properly on my diamond. Too many drop outs, bad sound quality and indeed external speaker.
Will report back here, hav to hurry the wintersport holiday is coming and need a good softphone to call for free

I just tried it...it seems to work allrite. But still external speaker on a touch diamond with the latest version (2.7)
Another problem with voipbuster, when other side picks up the phone connection drops out...
So not worth the money yet

I agree, poor quality using Fring, and it stopped my browsers working over NextG...
I found using this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=443972) works the best and the most simple, but think there must be a problem with the dial plan as I can't call mobiles.
Do be careful when installing wm6voip.cab.
In most cases it will break GPS functionality, which will require a hard reset.
I remember there is a thread on getting this to work anyway without breaking GPS, if you do incist on using wm6voip.cab ( i think its crap ).
Go with ageet. its such a nice app works great, uses internal speaker. really worth the money, especially to reward a company to have finally fixed the speaker issues, something other companies failed to do for... what is it.. years now? on windows mobile platforms.
today i installed the beta version of sjphone for wm5...
Seems to work very good so far. Dislike agephone as well...not worth a single penny
Fring sucks. It tunnels everything via their server in England.

Yeah the default dialplan is American. You need to edit ipdialplan.xml. I can give you mine if you want, will work fine if your SIP provider doesn't need any special pre-processing. I use Internode's nodephone service over nextg on my jasjam.. saves me a lot of money.
I'd like to hear if wm6voip.cap works well on the Diamond. I'm reluctant to buy any phone without VoIP support these days.

Ahh, I thought that might be the case... Yeah, I'm using Nodephone too!
I did open up the dial plan in XML Notepad to check it out and it looked American, but was needing some direction as to what would need changing...
To have your would be great if you don't mind?
I've not really tested the VoIP service on my Diamond that much yet, but it is forcing the VoIP to go handsfree which is annoying! But I belive there may be a fix for that...
So enlighten us with your philosophy on why it would not be worth a single penny.

well the best reason:
Its not any better than sjphone beta so not worth anything...
I deinstalled it because off:
- Poor sound quality
- Random disconnects
- Disconnects when other side picked up the phone
- And the internal speaker is not working for the diamond
Tested with voipbuster

All the reasons you name are in my opinion not related to AgePhone at all but to your voipproviders and/or bandwith. Also the application requires reading the documentation, setting up proper codecs, and also enabling a feature that WILL enable the internal speaker on your diamond. (Speaker Switching Option) This has been tested and working quite fine.

This is not true client initiated sip/voip, but a small client that will initiate a 2 legged call back system where your phone will dial a local number. which means you will still be billed for local phone calls. so this is only usefull for long distance calls abroad.

GEO Caching with a Kaiser

Guys,
Anyone got a good solution for GEO Caching with my Kaiser? I would really like to leave my other GPS home and still head for some caching sites for some afternoon or weekend adventure. Any thoughts?
Geoscout kicks butt, by FAR the best one out there. I'm very impressed by the fact that it syncs (Live) with Geocaching.com, if you post a log in the field, it's updated instantly on the web site.. Very cool...
Check it out:
http://www.pocketgear.com/en_US/html/display_product.jsp?id=prod5640731
Geoscout is seconded as the most popular solution, but there are other polished solutions also.
Check this article Geocaching with Windows Mobile.
Dont forget to switch off Static navigation.
Surur
Only problem is the Kaisers GPS isn't that good so you might have some issues with that.
I found zero Geocaching software for Windows Mobile that was worth using for the actual navigation/finding, period... Even bypassing the built-in GPS for all its fault and using my bluetooth GPS unit, none...
GeoScout is good for on-the-go data, but not the caching itself... BeeLineGPS seemed okay, but its radar screen and some other things are just.... wacky.
If nothing else, I'd say try BeeLineGPS..
My solution? I went back to using what I used on Palm, which works perfect, consistent, and I already had a very solid solution set up for getting the data files set up and ready for me to update at an time.. GeoNiche. I run it in StyleTap, and it works great.
Big problem is that GeoNiche + Styletap would run around $75. I already owned GeoNiche, and had some other stuff I also owned from Palm apps, so Styletap made a lot of sense for me.
Good luck with anything else.. I really gave BeeLine a good try, and many others (Smache, GPStuner, GPXSonar, CacheMate, etc) and just hated the navigation on all of them and the data import/update facilities for most of them.
PathAway is one I kept, but I am using it the same way I did on the Palm, and that is for hiking and marking POIs related to that. I considered trying to use it for Geocaching but it never suited me in that role on the Palm so I didn't give it another try for it.
I've been using Backcountry Navigator. I like that it allows me to download topo maps from within the program.
But I agree with austinsync, the GPS doesn't seem very good. It seems to be about 20-30 feet off from my Garmin unit, and is slow to update. It's good for finding where you are when hiking or boating, but not really good enough for Geocaching.
I second Beeline. I only wish it had maps.
As for the accuracy, I suggest trying different Radio Roms. My current Radio (1.58.25.17) works best for me. I'm usually within 5 ft of my friends Garmin. Other radios, I've been off as much as 60ft.
Great info guys.
Thanks for all the posts guys. I looked at GEOScout which is working quite well, but holy crap $40 Ouch! I'm going for Beeline next and then Backcountry navigator.
I am completely fine with the accuracy of the GPS as I prefer a challenge when caching anyway. I have also seen the radio set make a huge difference in how far off it is. I am currently using NEON 1.65.24.35 radio and is seams VERY close to my buddies Garmin (he's pissed cuz he bought a very expensive Garmin that made my Kaiser look cheap ).
Keep them coming, I want to find as many as possible so I can find the one that works best for what I'm doing. You guys are awesome for not giving me the usual "google it answer", That's awesome!
Sorry NEON for putting wrong radio info
My setup:
CacheMate (http://www.smittyware.com/ppc/cachemate/) to store information about the caches and to pinpoint the exact location of a cache. I usually build a pocket query and import the GPX file into CacheMate. When out cache-hunting I start off using Garmin (see below) and when I'm close to the cache I switch to CacheMate's compass window which tells me the distance and direction to the cache.
Garmin Mobile XT to locate the cache on a map. I've loaded Garmin with a map made for outoor life (i.e. not driving) that shows elevation, paths, swamps etc. What makes Garmin great for geocaching is that with a browser plugin you can send the location of a cache from geocaching.com directly to your Kaiser via the ActiveSync connection.
Hi
I had success caching with Tracky http://www.trackthisout.com/. It allows searches of nearby caches, you can download full page descriptions, and uses google maps. I found the GPS to be accurate enough. Sometime having an areal view can really help find the cache (Oh...THAT tree!). It takes a while to get used to, but once you have got it it does work really well.
It has been a bit buggy lately, but support is good. There is a free trial.

[Q] Recommended ROM for media player

Sorry about the length of this but I thought my request might need some explaining to get the scope of what I am looking for across.
Is there a recommended ROM that turns this thing into basically a media device and not a phone? Let me explain:
I've had this phone for about 3 or 4 years now but have recently gotten a new phone ("dumbphone") and carrier as ATT coverage was no longer working for me and I really was not using enough of the "smarts" to justify buying another smartphone AND paying for the data plans (I am almost always in a WiFi spot).
I was loathe to just throw this thing away and after looking at how much used Tilt's were going for I figured I'd be better off just keeping the thing - it's been sitting in a desk for the past few months. Now I am finding myself in the market for a media player and have been looking at the new iPod Touch but then remembered this old phone and thought I might try to re-purpose it to be more economically and socially responsible. I've loaded the Sense UI before so have some experience with this and thought there might be a new ROM that basically turns this into a more media centric device and less a phone.
Some things I'm looking for:
More speed
Stripped Down OS - Really all I would like on this thing now is media player, camera, and a Browser (not sure if GPS will still work)
More finger friendly UI
Long Battery Life - I've taken out the SIM and have turned off the phone/bluetooth (except for WiFi) to save on battery power as I remember I went through the battery in basically a day.
Any help and/or guidance is appreciated
well, that's more/less how i use my tytn ii as of lately, it is in a cradle by my bed, running Skype and MSN Messenger 24/7 (and few other things).
Just get the EOS FIRE 888 ROM
here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=432707
it is barebone WinMo 6.1 OS, and EVERYTHING works/runs on it, no matter what I throw at it for past 2 years. You won't regret once you set everything.
I have currently installed:
Google Maps
uBook Reader
MS Reader
AOL IM
Google (today/mail/maps/info)
Windows Live
Skype
PIE Plus for IEM, comes with EOS ROM (truly greatest app for WinMo - you get tabbed browsing and much more, but need to buy it or find for keygen. Don't open more than 10 maybe 12 tabs or you'll run out of RAM, unless all are truly small "mobile" pages)
Opera
Mobile torrent (make sure to have 16GB card, haha)
Card Export
FTP Server (excellent to get into your phone's files remotely when on home network)
Resco Radio (great app - buy or find keygen)
TCPMP player with all plugins (with it you will play almost any kind of audio/video files, including original youtube videos, not the 3gp "mobile youtube" crap versions)
and much more, basically leftovers from when I was using it as my primary phone few weeks ago, like GPS software, AstroNavigator or iGO and others, NoData, BBConnect, tons of today plugins for weather and such.
I have about 70+MB on the phone and almost 4GB of installed software on the card, granted half of it are maps for iGO, but anyways it is still a lot of apps and everything works
One more advice. Forget WM6.5 ROMs, in past few months I was trying hard to make it work as good as this old WM6.1 ROM, I have tried ALL of the ROMs available on xda, and sadly none was even close in functionality and stability. Just recently I simply gave up on WM6.5 ROMs, decided to flash back good old EOS 4.888 Fire WM6.1 ROM and never been happier
