What GPS software package are you guys thinking of using?

Well, I am all prepared to buy the Kaiser when it hits the market. I am already looking at the GPS software packages out there for my Kaiser (hopefully GPS is not locked to Telenav). Even if it is locked, I am pretty sure all the good cooks out here will modify the ROM to fix this. What are you all thinking about using?

I've been using Route 66 on my Wizard and it works quite well. DeLorme Pocket Street Atlas is OK but the maps and routing aren't as good.
Lots of people swear by TomTom, and a few reviewers/testers have used it on their pre-production Kaisers. Both semsons.com & buygpsnow.com have a wide selection of GPS software packages.

I use tomtom and find it great.

ive never owned a gps device, so that's the only software ive really heard of..

I've been using OCN6 with my Wizard. . . anxious to see if it works with the Kaiser/8925/Tilt.

Route66 for me. I want my traffic information without having to pay a subscription...
Only thing that could be improved is the frequency of the map updates, where TomTom is the clear winner, but I've had no problems with my R66 map accuracy so far.

regarding the GPS:
Does anyone of you know wether there is GPS Software that could pull images from google maps?
Like a "show me satellite image of my current location" - button?
I think that would be really cool, but does it already exist?
And secondly, I'm looking for a GPS - Software that runs in the background and logs the GPS coordinates in order to geotag photos from my digicam later. Any recommendations here?

Try Mapopolis...
I use Mapopolis and it works and looks great on my ETEN X500+ VGA device. I'll use it when I get the Kaiser too. The resolution will go down but I still love the program.
Mapopolis has a GPS TRAIL option that logs your trip at preset intervals (every 5 minutes, 5 miles or whatever). All you have to do then is use the Location SMS feature of WM6 with pictures attached at capture the places you want. From there, you can create a nice Trip Photo Album with coordinates or send the trip via email.

I can't really compare software as I have only used Tomtom, but I have always found the program great and have never felt tempted to even try another software package because it has always worked so well.

With my 8525 I purchased the Garmin Mobile 10 which is this awesome little gps receiver that fits in your palm. It's bluetooth and all I do is put the tiny thing in my pocket. It uses Garmin software and works amazingly well. I'm wondering whether this would be MORE accurate than the built in GPS receiver in the Kaiser. If this is more accurate then I'll keep on using it but if the 8925 works just as well then I'll probably sell the garmin.

Wow great find. The downside to this software though is it requires an internet connection to connect to google when planning routes. So, if you don't have coverage then youre going to get lost.

MDA Vario III
The Vario III will be coming with CoPilot out of the box (there are having alot of problems in the testing of this cant cant make it work) they are also having problems gettin the WiFi stay on. So all you UK users who are after the Vario III (me included) will be waiting till the start of Oct

I own "iGuidance" which works on the PocketPC .. will test it out once I have the Kaiser

I'll be using iGuidance, as it's what I'm using now on my Hermes...

I'll be using TomTom Nav 6. It also has a satelite download but I've never used it.

I just got my TyTN II and installed iguidance 3.0.1.
It doesn't actually start most of the time. It appears to run once after a reboot but then not again.
I can see the exe in the process list but the app is not actually running. or never finishes starting.
So maybe i will give tom tom a try. LOL
Edit: Oh actually i ran it and waited 10 minutes and the program actually launched.. so there are definitely a few issues.

Actually, I'd love if someone with a Kaiser would try Mapopolis - just load the Los Angeles, USA map and see if it's usable. My Hermes dogs out completely at high zoom levels - I'm presuming due to only 64MB of memory vs the 128MB in my old iPAQ 5555. (By "dogs out" I mean drag-panning the map is extremely jerky and category searches take near to a minute!)
Mapopolis' POI management is second to none, and it's had text-to-speech for ages. TomTom v6.030 is the latest PocketPC version I've found and it still has no text-to-speech, won't allow you to add your own POIs to the canned categories, etc.

GPS Navigation Geocaching Trails

So I've been playing around with the GPS features with BeeLineGPS and GPS Tuner. I'm more interested in gathering data for import into Google Earth or other programs to show where I've been and stats like altitude, speed, distance for biking, running, snowboarding, etc.
I haven't used these programs with any other WM device, but the data from the TyTN looks suspect. The altitude and speed readings are way off, a recent mountain bike ride has me topping out at +250 mph.
So anybody else tried out the GPS for these purposes? BeeLineGPS seems the best so far as it exports .gpx, .kml and .csv files. GPS Tuner has a nice interface but without data export it's kinda useless.
Attached is a file of a data sample from BeeLine, you can import the file at http://utrack.crempa.net/ and see the map on Google and stats (bad stats).

thats probably your the software your using not being compatible with wm6. ive found the TYTN II's gps to be very accurate

What software are you using? For the record Google Maps pinpoints the location exactly. I haven't tried TomTom, but I'm not really interested in street navigation.

im using tomtom right now, i plan on testing other gps programs aslo, ive got igo, destinator, route66. ive got to see if i can transfer my gps tuner over to ths mobile so i can test that aslo.
i do try to test as many apps as i can on a new device to see just what i can and cannot use

I'm a software developer and I have written a VB.NET application that runs on WM6 that sucks the raw data from COM4 (the GPS port) and I can also confirm that it is very accurate. (OK, within 2 metres if you want to be precise).
It pumps out a lot of data but the interesting one is the $GPRMC line which shows you mainly your position and speed.
The only gripe I had was when I had the phone brand new it took over 15 minutes to lock and from then onwards about 8 seconds

The 15 min is about the norm, it has to download the entire atlas. It's only once in the device's lifetime, and for some devices it's already done by somebody else trying the device or by manufacturer.

Delorme Street Atlas USA

Has anyone used Delorme Street Atlas USA with the Kaiser? It looks like a decent alternative to Tom Tom...

It is currently not compatiable with Kaiser and they are aware of the problem.
When you close the program or tell it to disconnect from GPS it locks up your device.
I can confirm this behavior as I spent the money to buy it. Wasable to convince Best Buy to accept it back. DeLorme offered to refund my purchase price in the event that Best Buy wouldn't allow the return.
Good company that has been doing maps for a long time, I hope they sort the problem out quickly.

I looked at it due to the price and thought that it would be a great buy, but the reviews on Amazon were less than steller. What if I'm already away from home and need to get directions? That won't for for me, sorry. I guess I'll shell out the big bucks for TomTom or similar.

They offer a 30 day mbg. I got my check yesterday. It's a nice program but doesn't play nice with the tilt. It was also missing a feature i like, directions by gps position. You always had to give it a start and end, with Tomtom or WLS you can just tell the program to start where you currently are.

It is not, by any means, a decent alternative.
Its user interface is extremely clunky, and it is SLOW. POI Search and routing on-device is essentially useless in SA2006HH and all indications I have seen say that SA2008HH is no better. DeLorme couldn't even get it right with the PN-20.
That said - if you need topographic maps on a PDA, DeLorme is the way to go. I use TomTom for driving, and once SA2008HH gets fixed for the Kaiser I will be upgrading to 2008HH from 2006HH (which worked well with an external BT GPS on my Hermes.) for topo capability.

Here I am playing nice, searching and finding an old topic to resurrect instead of starting a new one...
I have an old (2002) version of Delorme Xmap for pocket PC.
I just loaded it up today on my tilt, I already had prepared maps for the Northwest USA so I added those.
The program started up, I changed the settings to look at port 4 and since I had started my GPS with GPSTest it found the device and located my position very quickly.
Here is the reason I am posting:
I see they have version 2009 out now and it looks pretty good.
However if it causes lockups on the Kaiser then I should not buy it.
Still - for $40 it seems you get a lot.

I have the 2005 version with both streets and topo maps, it ran just fine on my Hermes (AT&T 8525) with a bluetooth GPS receiver but would never run right on my Kaiser (AT&T TILT). Being an avid outsdoorsman I miss my topo maps but, have found an alturnative, freeware called TGPS, it takes a little more work to setup and install maps but it works great.

I have version 2009 -- it works perfectly fine on the kaiser

Is it also fast? Or sluggish?

resonably fast -- except when you first zoom out to level 5 or higher. It can take a while to render the map at that level -- then its fast enough for the rest of the session.
It depends on how much info you've saved in the maps, though.
I tree to keep maps exported to the Kaiser about 1 to 2 MB in size, though I do have a 14MB map of much of the Western US, levels 5 to 9 or so, that has decent performance

Kaiser GPS Enhancement Guide...

I see a lot of people with GPS problems these days & most of them have to do with not getting a fast enough satelite fix. There are several things you can & should do to enhance you Kaiser & it's GPS capabilities.
Firstly, use HTC's QuickGPS. Your device has to locate, communicate with & track numerous navigation satelites to get a fix that can be used by your navigation software of choice. Typically your device will need this information from 3 - 5 satelites, however there can be as many as 14. Each Satelite has Almanac information, this information contains suck as the current location, speed & Orbitital Patterns. This is where QuickGPS comes in. QuickGPS downloads this almanc information from servers & helps to guide your device the most appropriate satelites in your area. downloading the QuickGPS data at least once a week is key to maintaining quick satelite locks with your device.
Second, I see a lot of people using the HCT GPS Tool from the Polaris. WHY? Sure it can help to jump start your GPS, but there are other more functional programs out there that accomplish the same thing & much more.
Enter GPSGate! GPSGate is a light weight GPS utility that can be installed on a storage card & I could not live without. It is easy to use, it configures itself, it WILL jumpstart your GPS & allows you to do some amazing things otherwise impossible. GPSGate is a semi-commercial software developed by Franson. A trial version is free to download & the only difference between the free & the pay version is that the pay version allows you to Connect to GpsGate Server or GpsGate.com for sharing or logging over the Internet. GPSGate will help speed things up for you & also do many other things. Whenever you launch GPSGate, you GPS chip is immediately initialized & goes to work. Ever tried running TomTom & Live Search at the same time? Usually it won't work & sometimes will freeze your device. Not when you use GPSGate. GPSGate will not only start your GPS faster, but it will also let you share the Kaiser GPS among several applications all at once.

I use TomTom, but I frequently use Live Search at the same time because POI's are always changing & new ones are added. Just download & install the cab, launch the program, follow the 2-steps on the screen & you're done.
Most of the important functionality is intact without licensing, (I think everything except the server based tracking & logging)

I don't understand why this is useful. The GPS is already sharable in the Kaiser. I've run multiple GPS apps at the same time with no problems. The only use for GPS gate that I can see is uploading your position to their server.

If you use iGuidance 4 and are using a 6.1 rom, GPSGate is not only useful, it is required in order for your map to update. Others have reported that GPSPROXY will also work, and it is free.

I have been playing with 6.1 ROMS for two weeks and was about to give up because I could not get GPS to work properly (yes I tried everything that was recommended!) I was about to give up and revert back to a 6 ROM... and like a pheonix from the ashes I saw your post. Franson GpsGate did the trick. My GPS is working better than ever, heck my phone is working better than ever, many thanks to Sleuth and to you for fixing that last very frustrating and important glitch.

Then I'm just lucky I guess. I'm running 6.1 and I have Beeline GPS, TomTom and Live Search all running just fine. No GPS Gate or GPSProxy loaded.

Yes you are lucky. Many Tilt users are, but for the unfortunate, for what ever reason, we have GPS issues and this solved it at least for me. But I am curious... if you GPS is operating so wonderfully... why are you in this thread?

the same reason I am in here probably, to see what everyone is talking about and to see what kinds of GPS issues are out there that people are having. I know mine is working just fine but still checking out what is going on in case I run in to issues or see someone with issues that I might be able to help out or point them to this thread.

I read every GPS thread. I'm always on the look out for some way to disable Static Navigation. So far, no luck.
My original post in this thread was to ask what does this software give me that I don't already have. The stock GPS is intended to be sharable. If it does work like it's supposed then no proxy software should be necessary.

GPS quality varies widely from one Tilt to the next...
I have 2 Tilts and I can tell you one of them gets almost instant GPS lock while the other one struggles to ever get a lock.
I'm awaiting a second warranty replacement from at&t as the first one they sent has crappy GPS also. I've already warned them that they will continue shipping me Tilts under warranty until I get a replacement that works as well as my 2nd Tilt does.
One thing I like about GPS Gate is the Tray Icon. It would be better if the tap & hold menu had an option to toggle the GPS on/off.
It is nice that you can also use it to provide GPS feed to your laptop if you have such a need.

More than anything I was bored & wanted to write (Got my replacement & had time to kill while Sec. Unlocking, Flashing, etc.), lol.
Really I'd see a lot of Noobies complaining about not being able to use multiple proggies & having issues giving gps a quick jump. This post was really just kinda intended for the noobie that doesn't have the skill or patience to set up multiple port connections for the GPS. With GPSGate they don't have to. It all wil run thru the same V-port without them having to do any changes manually. I find that using GPSGate there is NO DELAY in the new application receiving the GPS data. Before GPSGate, every time I switched programs my device would hang for a bit. I also noticed a lot of people using or including HTC GPS Tools in roms for a jump start of the GPS device, & I figured why not something more useful.
+ I know that while a lot of us know about these programs, not many new guys do & when I'm out & about, occasionally I like to use my laptop W/ Streets & trips because all my customer routes are in there. This way I can use it for navigation & construction updates on long drive days. Of course I know not everyone has a nerd mobile like my truck with a PPC & Laptop Mount cradle, lol...but you never know.

Do these proxies keep the GPS receiver running all the time? what does that do to battery life?

It does what you TELL IT to do. You can start or stop the GPS on the fly. OF COURSE if you leave the GPS running it will drain the battery faster. But it only keeps it on for as long as you keep it active. Using the proxy itself will not change the discharge rate of your battery to any noticable degree.
Search for Franson GPSGate. You can read your heart out about it.

What should you put the baud rate to?
I mean I would assume higher means better but since my kaiser takes 10 minutes to get a lock I haven't really bothered doing any proper comparisons.
In any case all I get for the ten-fifteen minutes I've had this running is "GPS data but no position, running ok"
(Pretty much like GPS Tool, it runs and shows a lot of sattelites but never gets a lock. It does once in a while but it seldom and it'll always take ~10 minutes)
I have run quick gps.
This is with a cooked rom and a new radio though.
With my stock rom/radio I got a lock within 2-3 minutes after starting tomtom.

Although my GPS works within much problems or 3rd party software so far, I do appreciate your post on this as it clearly is helpful at his point of the ROM development.

I too am having troubles with my GPS. I have only had my tilt for a week or so but I can't seem to get the GPS to work well enough to be truly useful.
I have GPS Gate installed and it sometimes gets a lock and sometimes it doesn't. I have tried both TomTom 6 and iNav v3 and v4 with and without GPS Gate. I can generally get a lock sitting still and sometimes I can get a lock moving but anytime I try to use the navigation to go anywhere it either looses its lock within 10 minutes OR it only is able to track 1-3 satellites and thus HORRIBLY inaccurate showing me tracking between 50 and 500 yards from my actual location (if there are side roads or streets it almost never has me on the correct road). I have tried changing the position of the device to get better reception with no change.
I have also tried several different ROMS with different radios with no change. Are there some settings in GPS gate that I need to change to get better performance or do I have a defective unit? Any help would be appreciated.

I'm glad you were bored to write this. I, for one, thinks its a good source of info and a possible set of solutions for GPS issues. I dont think you can have too much possible solutions, so thanks for posting this up!

thanks much for taking time to post valuable information. i for one am no noob to windows mobile, but am too GPS. so, i definitely am willing to check into anything that could possibly boost performance of any component. thanks again and it does help alot with the new tool. one question i have is about the virtual port driver. the message comes up and ask me to soft reset for the virtual port driver to be installed, so i do. when i run the tool again it does the same thing, to me, indicating the driver didnt install. i go into advanced options and check the status and it says my driver memory is low, please soft reset. any ideas and thanks again.

GPS working Better at higher baud
I have been experimenting with changing the settings for my GPS in GPSGate. I posted earlier that I was having trouble getting it to work reliably and that I would frequently loose lock and not be able to get it back.
Here is what I have found works best so far:
Radio: 1.64.08.21
COM: 4
BAUD: 57600
Emulating: COM 1
TomTom: COM 1 at 57600
I really don't know why this works better but I have been able to consistently HOLD a lock once I get one. I still have trouble with it sometimes taking a VERY long time acquire a lock but once I have one it is working well. I will post if I find anything that works better.
If anyone has insight on this or finds any better settings please post.

Not sure if a poll has been taken though. The BEST is very subjective. Maybe a better question is "what do you use". In any case, I am running away fast before the bombs come.

i like TomTom 7...i used iGo8, but its not so great, it just looks great...i am in LA, where there are plenty of buildings, but there arent any buildings for igo 8 so its kinda pointless

I currently have tt7, navigon, igo8, and garmin 2009...I like igo8 the best, really just because of the cool maps...but without a TCM device, I went with Garmin for the free traffic over gprs...
It is good, I used tt6 forever, and tt7 is mostly the same with some impovements, it has a really simple UI, but also has limited features (i.e. no over trip stats, traffic requires subscription, etc)...so i only have been using Garmin for about a week, i will see how it goes...

errrr all of them and a few more depending on what I am doing and where I am going.
EG: If I am running an off road route in my 4x4 TomTom is niether use nor ornament as it's simply all green on the map. So I use MemoryMap.

does garmin lag for you ? like in cities it is off by maybe half a block, be super slow on turns ( so slow that you miss the next turn if it is close by) and on highways it might lag out for 10 seconds before getting back on route ?
if not please let me know what rom you are using and what version of garmin.

No, not noticeably...
I say this with a condition however; TT7 does seem the smoothest (rerouting, staying consistant, etc) however, it is slight. I noticed the iGO8 actually tends to have more laginess than the others; surely, because of the great maps and user interface. Yet, again it is slight at most, nothing too bad. I have used them both on Leos Roms (V_9), and on ROMeOS v4...As far as the Garmin version, I installed the 2009 Version, it loaded something like v. 40010w.exe; however, you can update this from the Garmin site to version 42050w.exe; they claim many improvements from the first file i have listed until the last. If you do update, I found the easiest way to accomplish this is by first installing the older version, connecting through WMDC, then updating the software that way...Good Luck...

This moment I have Navigon: it does exactly what it supposed to do, easy to use. Great forum for tricks and tips, only German. Befor Navigon I had TomTom but I refuse to buy a new product of them. (I bought a new release and within a month they simply told the pda wasn't supported anymore so I had nothing exept a empty pocket.No discussion possible.)

tt6 and iguidance both work great.

TOMTOM is my choice!

TTN7 FTW; the best by far IMO.

Garmin has a wonderful interface - very easy to use, finger-friendly, and functional. It also consistently locks onto a GPS signal in less than 20 seconds.
The only other app. I've used is iGuidance, which had plenty of issues:
Slow GPS lock
Clunky interface
Sluggish performance

Wait lol...Deffinetly the guy who said Nav4all is a good gps app is smokin crack...that gps app was the first gps prog I ever used ..and it was only cuz it was free and I didn't know diddly about TomTOM and that people had actually extracted it and posted it on xda..and first things first... Nav4all is like a cheap european hooker version of a gps application. The people who made that thing really must not of liked themselves..its a kmart version o what gps software should be..I never used an app that lacked everything gps software is supposed to have..it was bare bone..it could only locate maybe half of a satelite and had no turn by turn..no poi..nothing.........
But anywayz TomTom7 is by far the best and user friendly gps software out there..and u guys that are still using TT6...geezus just upgrade to TT7...why wouldn't u? such a better upgrade believe me. And for the people who don't like how the map colors look..just PAY for the more expensve colored maps and search around ull find something u like..I mean I hear that IGO and Garmin are "pretty" looking gps maps and all , but their defintely not as user friendly, as detailed and as easy to use...and im 100% sure theres nothing out their as precise and as accurate as TT7. TOMTOM7 has no lag whatso ever...and the estimated arrival time and when u actually get too the location are accurate to a T!. I mean it can't get any bettter...so until I see other gps software becoming as accurate as TOMTOM, I doubt a lot of us will be switching gps software anytime soon, just look at this simple forum poll...I mean iphone users are dying for TT to be available for the iphone..which I doubt It will be, those flunks are stuck with piss on me googlemaps Lol....
anywayz goodluck on finding a gps software u like, this is my 2 cents on it.

its all about google maps! tried route66 but ended up just using google.
