What GPS software package are you guys thinking of using?

Well, I am all prepared to buy the Kaiser when it hits the market. I am already looking at the GPS software packages out there for my Kaiser (hopefully GPS is not locked to Telenav). Even if it is locked, I am pretty sure all the good cooks out here will modify the ROM to fix this. What are you all thinking about using?

I've been using Route 66 on my Wizard and it works quite well. DeLorme Pocket Street Atlas is OK but the maps and routing aren't as good.
Lots of people swear by TomTom, and a few reviewers/testers have used it on their pre-production Kaisers. Both semsons.com & buygpsnow.com have a wide selection of GPS software packages.

I use tomtom and find it great.

ive never owned a gps device, so that's the only software ive really heard of..

I've been using OCN6 with my Wizard. . . anxious to see if it works with the Kaiser/8925/Tilt.

Route66 for me. I want my traffic information without having to pay a subscription...
Only thing that could be improved is the frequency of the map updates, where TomTom is the clear winner, but I've had no problems with my R66 map accuracy so far.

regarding the GPS:
Does anyone of you know wether there is GPS Software that could pull images from google maps?
Like a "show me satellite image of my current location" - button?
I think that would be really cool, but does it already exist?
And secondly, I'm looking for a GPS - Software that runs in the background and logs the GPS coordinates in order to geotag photos from my digicam later. Any recommendations here?

Try Mapopolis...
I use Mapopolis and it works and looks great on my ETEN X500+ VGA device. I'll use it when I get the Kaiser too. The resolution will go down but I still love the program.
Mapopolis has a GPS TRAIL option that logs your trip at preset intervals (every 5 minutes, 5 miles or whatever). All you have to do then is use the Location SMS feature of WM6 with pictures attached at capture the places you want. From there, you can create a nice Trip Photo Album with coordinates or send the trip via email.

I can't really compare software as I have only used Tomtom, but I have always found the program great and have never felt tempted to even try another software package because it has always worked so well.

With my 8525 I purchased the Garmin Mobile 10 which is this awesome little gps receiver that fits in your palm. It's bluetooth and all I do is put the tiny thing in my pocket. It uses Garmin software and works amazingly well. I'm wondering whether this would be MORE accurate than the built in GPS receiver in the Kaiser. If this is more accurate then I'll keep on using it but if the 8925 works just as well then I'll probably sell the garmin.

Wow great find. The downside to this software though is it requires an internet connection to connect to google when planning routes. So, if you don't have coverage then youre going to get lost.

MDA Vario III
The Vario III will be coming with CoPilot out of the box (there are having alot of problems in the testing of this cant cant make it work) they are also having problems gettin the WiFi stay on. So all you UK users who are after the Vario III (me included) will be waiting till the start of Oct

I'll be using iGuidance, as it's what I'm using now on my Hermes...

I'll be using TomTom Nav 6. It also has a satelite download but I've never used it.

I just got my TyTN II and installed iguidance 3.0.1.
It doesn't actually start most of the time. It appears to run once after a reboot but then not again.
I can see the exe in the process list but the app is not actually running. or never finishes starting.
So maybe i will give tom tom a try. LOL
Edit: Oh actually i ran it and waited 10 minutes and the program actually launched.. so there are definitely a few issues.

Actually, I'd love if someone with a Kaiser would try Mapopolis - just load the Los Angeles, USA map and see if it's usable. My Hermes dogs out completely at high zoom levels - I'm presuming due to only 64MB of memory vs the 128MB in my old iPAQ 5555. (By "dogs out" I mean drag-panning the map is extremely jerky and category searches take near to a minute!)
Mapopolis' POI management is second to none, and it's had text-to-speech for ages. TomTom v6.030 is the latest PocketPC version I've found and it still has no text-to-speech, won't allow you to add your own POIs to the canned categories, etc.

Can someone with a stock Tilt give me the actual URL to get TeleNav to my phone, please. I've flashed Sleuth and that shortcut is not part of the ROM.

You could also drop TeleNav & load up TomTom. North American/Canada map is about $110 which gives you a 1yr payback time. I'd certainly try the taster edition (comes with free local map of your choice) to get a good comparison between the two. In fact, it would sure be nice if somebody reviewed the two and posted their thoughts

I am not sure about TelNav but TomTom is the BOMB! I truly love it and I did buy the NA/Canada map after using the free one.

I have used them both... telenav works great, and its really cool that you can set up your destinations online and the new version does traffic, and it runs very well on the Kaiser.... HOWEVER what i dont like about telenav is that is has to download while you are on the move... I would hate to travel out of a service area and not be able to navigate... This is the reason i will always be loyal to other ones such as tomtom or iguidance, etc... and tomtom works great on the kaiser, i have no complaints with it whatsoever..

TomTom on Tilt
After reading your response above, I went to the TomTom site and from what I could find, they do not support the HTC 8925 - something to do with their relationship with HTC which limits their use on only certain HTC devices.
My specific question for those Tilt owners who are using TomTom is - does it use the built in GPS receiver or is TomTom calculating position by triangulating with cell towers (or something like that)?

Thanks. Yes - I had seen that thread but I wasn't sure after reading it that TomTom actually worked on the Tilt without any hacks.
I'm not too satisfied with Telenav and wouldn't mind installing TomTom to test it. Is there a way to do so with out first signing up - like a trial period? I wouldn't mind issuing a thread about the difference between the two (I also have an in-dash unit so I can compare the functionality of PDA GPS to in-dash units as well).

okay, to inquire further, I called Tom Tom and found that:
1. They do not "specifically" support the AT&T tilt (HTC8925). They do show support for the HTC TyTN II surprisingly. I guess I have to assume that if they support the other HTC, their software will function on the AT&T tilt.
2. unfortunately, they do not have a trial period so there is no way of testing their software directly. I guess the only way to do so is to install the Tom Tom File mentioned earlier.
from the previous post I guess it is possible to have both the Telenav software and the TomTom software on the phone without any problem. I guess I will have to check that.

You can load the teaser version (this is their trial version btw) to test w/o issues (there's a link to it on page 1 of my ROM thread: click "kaiser ROM" on my sig to go there). Their trial software doesn't expire; rather it limits the geographical area that the software will function by virtue of the installed maps. In this vein, it will allow you to download a map of your local area and you can play with it. All features such as traffic updates are fully functional. If you like the software, then merely purchase the full America/Canada map.
To obtain fast fixes, be sure to run QuickGPS on a regular basis (fix data is valid for 7 days). When you're within the valid data timeframe, TomTom will acquire a fix in about 30-45 seconds. This is one of the properties of aGPS by the way: obtaining initial position OTA.

ok... let me answer some of this to give you a clearer picture, if not there will be some n00b bashing that will go on and i would like to prevent that...
TomTom will work fine with no hacks on the tilt.
The tilt, tytn II, kaiser, etc are all the same device.
They dont claim support on the tilt because of AT&T exclusive relationship with telenav.
Now this i could be wrong on but you should be able to install the TOMTOM taster file which is located in this forum and on our FTP server and when it goes to load a map will give you the button for voucher, this should let you download 1 free city map.

HOWEVER what i dont like about telenav is that is has to download while you are on the move... I would hate to travel out of a service area and not be able to navigate...
I have traveled out of coverage and it still worked. it just didn't give turn by turn voice but it still tracked via the gps on the maps and showed were i was going. i guess you would have to loos cell service for a long time for it to take effect. I to also like you can go on the web real quick and enter in an address and just go. thats nice when you have multiple places to go that day and you just type them all in make things easy when you are in sales driving everywhere. I hope soon they will have the teletraffic for the kaiser to get the traffic updates.

i don't have Tom Tom but i'm happy with Telenav. you can get a 1yr subscription for $99. another Telenav advantage is that maps are updated regularly. with Tom Tom you have to wait for next software version.

I have both Telenav and TomTom. I absolutely love the traffic feature on telenav. Very accurate to the minute and detailed. Traffic updates on TomTom always seem outdated

you must live within the city or at least very near to it. Traffic updates really don't mean much to people outside of big cities since nobody is keeping track of the traffic situations on urban roads. I once subscribed to XM traffic and found that it was only useful in and around Philadelphia (I live 35 miles southwest of Philadelphia). I am finding the same thing true with Telenav.

TomTom Users-> questions

I've put TomTom on my Tilt, and I'm curious about a few things.
BlueTooth
Natively not being able to hear it through my Blue Tooth headset (Motorola 700) I installed the BT Audio referenced in another thread. It works, except if you do anything else, such as take a call, use MS Voice command, etc, you then need to re-enable it, which is annoying.
Does using another BT device, such as a stereo headset, work better with Tomtom?
TomTom Plus Stuff
Has anyone in the U.S. purchased any of their services, in particular Points of INterest, and found them of any value? I find the included POI to be a little skimpy (as have others per threads I've read). IN particular, I'm interested in the JiWire HotSpots.

Not in the US but i've definatley found that the speed camera POI's to be a good investment.
Just passed my Driving test (ok im a later starter at 34) a couple of weeks ago so anything that will help me avoid points on my license must be a good thing.
Actually used TomTom on my Kaiser properly for the first time today whilst having to drive up the back roads to Manchester and it worked really well apart from departing once when it decided to think it was flying all around the country (soft reset fixed it though)

I use the TomTom Plus Traffic and it works pretty well. I've been able to avoid long traffic delays/etc very easily with it. I find it to be pretty accurate.
As for POI, I normally install my own. You can search on Google for POIs and you will find a few sites that allows you to create POI files with data.

Thanks for the suggestin on Googling POIs. I don't know why I hadn't thought of that yet.
BTW...the reason I ask about "in the U.S.", is because I can imagine the software, programming and devices may be well supported in Europe, but it seems not necessarily in the U.S. I don't want to purchase something , then find it only works in Europe. They definitely seem to be more up to date in Europe on this product.

Does anyboddy know if you could share the GPS info over BlueTooth? Like connect another device to it and use the TyTN II as a GPS receiver only to send the information over bluetooth to say a TyTN I or I-Mate JasJar that does not have GPS? Try that...................

I bought my Hermes in the UK. I took it to the US in August 2007. I simply loaded the US maps up before I went, arrived, switched on and had no problems in both California and NY.
Can't see it would be different for Kaiser.

TomTom discontinuing Navigator ?

Through conversations with a few folks I've learned that TomTom is apparently contemplating ceasing any further development on any products for PDA's. They are apparently no longer supporting Nav6 nor will they provide any further map/poi updates for Nav6. They had apparently begun development of Nav7/8 but have suspended that project until a go/no decision is made.
This decision is apparently being driven primarily by significant bootlegging of maps (their primary source of income with Nav software).
I have gotten this info second-hand, but believe it is reliable. Has anyone else heard anything along these lines?

I had to call them to help me activate my maps on my fourth replacement tilt. In the course of conversation, I asked about new maps. And the answer was there were new maps but not for navigator 6....they were developing navigator 7 and were in the process of determining "viability." When I asked if that meant they were thinking of discontinuing it, he backpedaled and said they just want to make sure that everything works with such a wide variety of devices to support - palm, symbian, windows mobile.
With what you heard, it sounds like it could be a possibilty. Shame. It's a good program...

I agree, it's an excellent program and I get a lot of good use out of it, I hope they continue to upgrade and improve it. The ONLY thing I don't like about TomTom Navigator 6 is that it doesn't have Text to Speech, it would be nice to hear "turn right on Yuba Street then turn right on California Street" instead of just "Turn right then turn right".

They released new maps this past week for the Nav6 as well as all their other products.
Until you see this on their web site it is just someone's rumor.

Do you know if those truly are new maps? After installing TT on my Kais and downloading the free map for my metro area 5 days ago I've found a large number of outdated things including 1 year old streets not in TT and POI's 1 to 4 years out of date. I'd think that they'd want the map they give you for a trial to get you to purchase from them would be the most up to date.

Can anyone tell what the exact version is of the new maps? From what I can read about them is that they are version 6.75 but they done give the build number. I already have version 6.75.1409. Just wanting to know if they really are newer maps.

Very powerful - search for "KFC" and it will find all the nearest with clickable links to websites, phone numbers, driving directions from current position, from an input address from a contact etc. Everything you could want when you need to top up on Kentucky Fried Chipmunks.....or whatever you need to find.
Of course as it is "live" and downloads maps on the fly you better have an unlimited data plan. But it is cool driving along in Satellite View!
HINT - the CAB is not seperately downloadable. You have to download it direct to your PDA - last time I did it was about 1.5Mb. Though once you have the CAB in memory you can back it up to your PC.

These are not new maps - they are the same as what i downloaded several weeks ago.

The one big disadvantage of google maps is that it DOES require that live connection. If you are in a poor reception - or no reception area - it is hard to get those directions. For me, i would rather have it sitting on my device and just be dependent on the satellites....instead of BOTH satellite and cell tower.

I don't think the have stoped developing v7 because the new HTC Daimond comes with v7 intergrated in the rom. This can be found in several artical on XDA.

There is much to like about google maps. As you mentioned, they are constantly updated, fairly accurate, have tons of useful info, allow you to click on POI's for info, to call POI, or link to POI website.
Unfortunately it doesn't have turn-by-turn capabilities (at least that I've ever seen) or allow you to keep maps on your device (besides costly when roaming, I seem to always find areas without cell service). It doesn't determine your direction of travel with an arrow, only shows a dot. These are the biggies. Some of the route planning and other things that TT or Garmin have are also useful but missing from Goog. Google's love of learning anything and everything about people for their own profit is also a bit disconcerting. Them knowing where I've been, where I am, and where I'm going is perhaps too much.
Telenav only works in the US, Garmin is coming out with their own phone to avoid the pirated maps/revenue issue...

Darren Griffin from PocketGPS forum has written the following statement
"In Amsterdam last week I quizzed TomTom on this and whilst their future plans for PocketPC were vague, they did suggest that piracy had been major issue and 'if' any future releases were planned they would most likely only be in partnership with manufacturers. "

Google does not offer voice guidance or turn-by-turn maps. However, Google does offer a traffic overlay which is free (TomTom charges) and does not require updates.
Oddly, it seems to take TomTom about 10 minutes or so to get a GPS lock. Google (with GPS turned on) seems to take less than a minute. I have never understood that

I called and the 1409 is the latest version of the map.
Tech support indicates that they have no plans to discontinue the Nav6.

Mine (Kaiser w/ TT) almost always gets GPS lock within about 30 seconds of starting the TT app. This is in US including MN, CA, NY, and GA.

Yep, same here, TomTom has a lock and is showing my location in at most 60s when I turn it on while driving. If I'm sitting still, it's less than that.
The Tilt does not seem to have much luck getting a signal when shielded from the sky, however.. Even sitting in a restaurant near a window I've found it completely unable to get a signal but it locked on in <15s when outside. I always mount my Tilt on my 'grip' mount on my dashboard so it has a reasonable view of the sky.

Do you have aGPS enabled? That will enable you to get a lock even inside of buildings, or anywhere that has little or no view of the sky.

I hope they do move to navigator 7 at some point as I like the idea of things like map share that are avaliable on the go 720 tomtom models.

Looks like there will be TomTom 7 for Procket PC.

i get a quick lock on tomtom, but poor refresh updates from the GPS chip, so its laggy as.
TOMTOM also dont support the kaiser, TYTN II, or the OEM Branded ones, so getting support is a pain (even though my bloody phone came with tomtom on a CD!)
My GPS Reception jumps all over the place too. very unreliable.

What is the best GPS software that works on the Diamond and why?
From what i can see the big ones are:
Tom Tom
iGo
Destinator
Route66
CoPilot
Google Navigator (yeah ok the wildcard!)
Do any of these have built in/downloadable speed cameras, and do any have traffic information?
I'm sure everyone is else will be asking the same question in about 1 week

Personally I like tomtom the most, it might be that im just used to it cuz I was using it for few years, Garmin mobile xt is pretty decent too. They both have speed cameras/ traffic but it's an extra service. I think traffic is free but you have to buy speed camera locations

i have used IGO,Destinator, Papago & TomTom.
Currently, I have TOMTOM on my diamond and it works great! I think TomTom is very user friendly and provides good info. You can get fixed red light cameras and fixed speed cameras.

I have Garmin Mobile XT, it is pretty good. When you arrive at the destination, it tells you whether the address is at right or left side of the street. It is especially helpful when you are on a wide street with 2 or more lanes each side, you can be prepared to go left or right. On the other hand Tomtom does not tell you whether the address is on the right or left side of the street. Otherwise they both are comparable.

What is the difference between Google Navigator and Google Maps?

I´m not able to install tomtom on my diamond it does not find the maps any ideas?

I've always used Tomtom. But it hasn't been updated for two years and there is no news of a new verison coming out yet (apart from the usual rumours). I'm going to try Copilot 7.
Copilot was always good (had it years ago) but had a clunky interface. Looks pretty good now its had the interface re-done in the latest version.

Don't know about Destinator or Route66. Never used them. And from other posts in this forum I don't think iGo will work. I think it will only run off a copy protected SD which rules out the Diamond, but I could be wrong on that.
Anyone know the situation with iGo?
Also any previous users have any comments about Route66 or Destinator?

IGo is locked to the micro SD card it is supplied on which is a real shame as it makes putting this application on to a device with no card slot impossible. It also makes it impossible to copy the app/ maps onto a larger card so once you have bought it you only have a small amount of free space available unless you are happy swapping cards all the time where a card slot does exist.
I would consider looking at Route 66, its a decent application although the maps are around 12 months old which seems strange for a very newly released application (version 8 for PPC). These maps are around six months more up to date than the v675 map which is the latest map release that works with TomTom Navigator 6.
Tried Destinator and never bothered putting it back on the PDA, too slow and clunky for my taste, I also have Co-Pilot Live 7 and that seldom gets used because I find the interface too slow although once you get used to it its a decent application, another one is Sygic Live, great potential but the version I used tended to route down back streets, narrow lanes etc to the extent I didn't trust it - Mike

I currently have TomTom and MioMap on my Touch Cruise.
I prefer MioMap.

I have just made the switch from CoPilot 7 to Garmin XT. Garmin seems to have more functionality- or maybe I'm more familiar with it because I have it in my car and it's EXACTLY the same interface!

So it seems everyone has their favourites! How about from a speed camera/traffic update point of view? Please correct me if i'm wrong.
It seems all of them charge for speed cameras with some anual charge, but by registering for free here you can get an up to date speed cameras POI for the UK for free. http://www.poigenie.co.uk/speed_cameras
There are also other versions around compiled from the official tomtom update and other sources.
For traffic, it seems again they all charge unless your using TMC - which the diamond doesnt have (right?).
Since iGo doesnt work i'm now split between TomTom - because eventually we'll get a v7 rom / and Garmin - because alot of people seem to like it.

I think Copilot speed camera updates are free. But they charge for Traffic info (bout £35 for 2 years ).

Do any of these sat nav apps come with card readers seen as the Diamond doesn't have an SD card slot.

I have MioMap3.3 and TomTom V7 on my trinity, I by far preferr MioMap but I have to use TomTom because it has more upto date maps and knows more POST codes than MioMap.
I dont think you have to have an SD card to install either of these programs and they both work perfectly.

I have tried Tomtom, Garmin, Navigon and iGO8 and I think that iGO8 by far is the best one. I think there is a version for the Diamond but I do not know if you can by it without the phone...
It is however quiet easy to install the regular version on a Diamond even without a SD-slot. Just use the searchfunction and you will find an answer in this forum.
