WM2005 RAMDisk - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

Mods, sorry if this has posted before.
Somebody can tell me about the wm2005 ramdisk by buzz ???
Now my BA WM2005 has a ramdisk 96, so if i must do a downgrade, what should i do with the ramdisk ??? remove it or keep it ? n to remove it i only should uninstall it ??? N y en apps ive install over ramdisk it cant load, error bla bla bla .... Thanx

Buzz ramdisk would work incorrectly on BA. It is designed for the patched himalaya ROM with a reduced memory size. On BA ramdisk's "disk" overlaps the OS RAM and would cause problems, and for the same reason its contents would be cleared at soft reset. I recommend to remove it.

Another patched WM5 ROM to test

I've made another patched ROM: ftp://xda:[email protected]/Uploads/Blueangel/wm5_test/ba_wm5_patch3.rar
It differs from the previous ROM in the increased disk cache size and FAT write-through mode is turned off. This potentially can cause loss of data, though in my tests everything worked fine. SPB Benchmark test shows the huge increase in file read speed on my device.
After flashing the device you don't need to do hard reset, nor you'll lose any data (except for system clock settings).
mamaich, can you please tell me what software you use to edit the ROM and maybe a link to a tutorial? I'd like to take my knowledge to the next level.
Thank You,
Alex
Currently there are no tools to make custom ROMs as were for WM2003. I use hex editor (HIEW32) and IDA (www.datarescue.com) to find places I need to patch.
Thanks. I don't think I'm going to tackle that at the moment then
mamaich,
Taking the modules from the emulator image is a smart way bcz it shares the same build, but isn't it better to use the modules dumped from the universal?at least they are final.. (so far)
Universal modules I've tested would hang. There may be 2 reasons - they are dumped incorrectly, or they are designed for VGA-screen. Himalaya 1.60 files work, but they crash often. I think that this is a problem in a dumper. It dumps XIP DLLs/EXEs from memory when they are already loaded by OS and their data sections are already initialized. This cannot be fixed.
Images from emulator are dumped with dumprom tool that produces almost correct files.
I've played a bit with Himalaya registry settings and trueffs.dll driver and made a CAB that would unhide "Extended_ROM" folder and make it fully accessible.
Use this CAB at your own risk as it is not heavily tested.
Fatastic - Will try it right now
Hi Mamaich, Great work.. I will try it at ones... I have just one question, all the patch there has been made for the other ROM will they still work with this one
As soon as I have tested the new ROM I will let you know...
Re: Fatastic - Will try it right now
all the old patches should work with this rom too.

I've made another version that should work with them, and a set of CAB-files that should be used on it instead of similar cabs from this post.

@mamaich
this extrom unlocker will it also work on universal?
thanks
The patched ROM seems to work as it should for me. It installed the MMS from ncruz without complaining.
Hi Mamaich,
Can you pls help asian user by replacing the wince.nls file so that we can have Chinese setting on the BA WM5 machine?
Thanks,
Thank you very much, Mamaich, I finally got working (particulary, but still) a program that did not work before at all.
The extended rom unlocker works; still unable to install a new splash screen. Does the ext rom need to be bigger?
Edit, how do you hide it again? thanks
Edit2; i hard reset (clear storage) and its no longer showing. Hope there will be an easier way soon. Thanks

After a Hardreset, you have to reinstall that patch...

Do you mean reinstall the patch to hide it again? I know you have to reinstall after a hard reset if you want to show the ext rom again. I was talking about hiding it after you have run the patch to unhide it.

Unlock Ext ROM doesn't survive Soft Reset

Hi Guys,
I tried using the ExtROM_unlock CAB file for HERMES on my Trinity.
It allows me to write... but the changes made does not survive a soft Reset...
Please advise if there is any work arounds...
Regards
Fei Yu
But, exactly, what about the three .cab present in the ext ROM? What do they do? Is safe to ignore their installation (ie if they r only skins) or they represent some sort of upgrade/update of present features?
Well for soft reset survival you can try this hint read somewhere in the forum:
first exit your registry editor instead of minimizing it, then wait a while before doing the soft reset (around 30 sec if my memory is good).
Then you solve part of the problem: your Ext Rom keep unhidding BUT still write protected...
So you can't use it anyway :-(
And i didn't find any working solution...
about the 3 cabs in the ext rom i install them and did not notice any changes...

Intresting Thing !!!

Guyz i have noticed something very intresting about WM 6.1
Even if you hard-reset or flash a new ROM and perform a No/yes/yes way hardreset..the Ramdisk does not looses its data..i have flashed my currently being cooked ROM about 12 or 13 times and the data which i had since C_shekhars is still there...check it out when u flash another ROM
Hm....
Belive me it not becose of 6.1
I`ve use it since wm5.
I`ve already been reported abut that - sometimes in case of similarity of ramdisk it survive reflash if ramdisk similar.
this is not windows based thing
the most probable cause is same ramsize roms
is this the case?
Note
Yes, i also agree. i have upgrade my O2 XDA2 to WM 6.0c from C_shekhars one day i try to do a hard reset by pressing Power and Reset button it doesn't do anything what i have installed still there. Any Idea?
But when you remove the battary for changeing the sim
It is deleted .
Strange ......
@obaz is right.
It is happening since the time RAMDisk has come into existance.
May I add to it for all those who want to know more about it that:
When you flash another ROM having Eq to or larger-than-before RAMDisk size then the contents shall survive the Hard reset. But, when you flash the ROM having RAMDisk size smaller-than-befor then the RAMDisk contents shall be lost.
heres my problem, the RAMDISK is not recognized by my XDA as a STORAGE LOCATION, so when i install applications, instead of having 3 choices (DEVICE - STORAGE - RAMDISK), i am only left with 2 choices (DEVICE and STORAGE).
this happened while I was on WM6.1 ver A_CS, when i reflashed to WM6.1 Ver B_CS, the ramdisk survived intact and still it is not recognized as a storage location or drive.
by the way, 6.1A and 6.1B of shekhar has the same 16MB ramdisk. although im not a fan of ramdisk, I NEVER HAD A USE FOR IT, it sometimes just lose all programs installed on it.
for the sake of functionality, HOW can i bring back the old RAMDISK as DISK or STORAGE LOCATION?
see the picture, STORAGE CARD is classied as a DRIVE or DISK, whereas RAMDISK is not, it was a drive before but not now.

This happens when your battery dies.

Hi Jeenj
Although i took battery out for along time, it's still not delete.

RAMDISK 2- how to remove it

I recently gave my XDAII (on Ather's WM6.1) away as a gift to friend. A few days ago he told me that after changing batteries a "RAMDISK 2" suddenly appeared and that his storage/memory was now half of what it was. Needles to say he wants to go back to the standard single RAMDISK config and recover his lost storage/RAM memory. I've been searching xdadev for two days now and all I could come up with is this:
"paulpax

youve got a case of weak backup battery, and you do frequent removal or changing of your main battery. doing this can cause you ramdisk to appear and disappear for no reason at all, sometimes your OS compensates by naming a folder RAMDISK but its not really a real ramdisk, when the real ramdisk gets restored, you will have RAMDISK - not real and RAMDISK2 - real ramdisk, where RAMDISK2 has a removable storage icon, it has happened to me a lot of times, but since i dont use RAMDISK because of this, its no problem."
Can anyone pls. tell me how to remove/delete the "phantom" RAMDISK2 and restore the full storage/memory of my friends XDAII. Thanks in advance
thats a quote from me alright. hehe.
just erase the folder RAMDISK then restart or soft reset your xda. then ramdisk2 will be named ramdisk after the restart and the old ramdisk, well you just deleted it.
also, if you installed some programs our your ramdisk, then copy those programs first to a storage card before erasing ramdisk, then just copy them back after restarting your xda.
hope that helps.

What can I delete for files?

Hi I upgraded my 9090 to WB 6.5 from Xplode latest release. I’m really happy with this and everything works fine.
In this phone the memory is only 43.2 Mb, (I have another one, broken but it has 60Mb.) and the upgrade take almost all of this.
My question is what files can I delete to have more space?
Is it possible to install the OS on a memory card?
I’m really happy with this release so I hope there is a solution.
Regard
Ola A
you should downgrade to wm2003 first and repart your storage space, so that the device also has 60mb, also, the rom takes up 32mb in the rom storage, even if there was a rom with nearly nothing inside, just the operating system itself, it would still take up 32mb, because that is the rom size. and it must be in the rom space, there is no way to install it somewhere else.
so, what you can do to gain those extra 16mb, to need to flash wm2003 and then do exactly, what i wrote here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=4706441&postcount=2
in the end, flash wm6.5 back and following that guide, it will run smoothly and fast and you will have slightly more space. still, you will never have more than 60mb of internal storage, unless you pick a rom with a ramdisk, which can offer you yet another 16mb in another partition.
I’m really pleased for the solution...
Please tell me where can I find how I go back to wm2003?
You had in your mind to do the repart for the storage space as in the link you suggest?
Wye can’t I do the repart in WM 6.5?
The download for repart_doc.exe and the second file have download problems, you couldn’t have some down load alternatives...?
How can I install the OS on the Memorycard?
Regard
Ola A
1. for the downgrade to wm2003:
1.a go to firmware.atspace.com/blueangel.html
1.b look for a firmware to match your device, it doesn't matter much, but it should be either an english rom or one in your native language, i guess english would be best though.
1.c Important! Extract the rom, so you have a folder, containing files like nk.nbf, ms_.nbf, baupgradeut.exe and so on. don't just start the exe you downloaded!
1.d download maupgradeut_noid, if the rapidshare download from the link above doesn't work, search the forum for "Chef_Tony Ruu", you will find several mirrors.
1.e download "repart_doc" and "xda-unlocker.cab" also from the link or search the forum, i uploaded it many times
1.f put the maupgrade in the same folder as the nk.nbf and all the other stuff from the wm2003 rom
1.g hard reset your device by pressing reset+power and camera+record, in the menu appearing set
Enable Kitl No
Format Storage Yes
Clear Registry Hive Yes
and confirm with the mail button
1.h after the device started, switch it off and remove the sim card and sd card
1.i put your device into bootloader mode by pressing power+record+reset, the display shows Serial V2.0x, where x is a number from 5 to 7
1.j start MaUpgradeut_noID and flash the device
1.k perform a wm2003 hard reset by pressing power+reset
1.l wait for the extrom to install and the following soft reset
1.m proceed with the manual from the link i gave you.
2.yes, the reparting of the useless extrom partition is, what i had in mind, it slows your device down and is just a collection of useless cab files with carrier customizations like dialer skins and wallpapers, that are installed after a hard reset in wm2003
3. it cannot be done in any os but wm2003, that is what makes this partition so useless, it is just not accessible
4. for downloading those files, if rapidshare doesn't work for you, as suggested in 1. use forum search and look for the file name, together with my name, and you will find several direct download links from the forum.
5. there is absolutely no way, the os can be installed from or to the memory card, in fact, while installing the os, the sd card may not even be inside the device, it can lead to serious damage of the device. like i explained in my earlier post, the rom does not take away any usable space anyway. you have 60mb of storage space for programs and files and 32mb rom space for the rom. if your rom is 20mb, then it is still filling up your 32mb of rom space and your storage will still be 60mb. if you have a rom with a lot of stuff inside, that is really taking up 32mb, you still have 32mb rom and 60mb storage.
that is why it is even better to take a big rom with lots of programs inside, because that way you really save space... since you don't need to install those programs in your storage space.
with best regards
Chef_Tony
A big thank you for your support. I’m now going to try this out.
--------------------------
Three hour later.
Yes, now is everything done. Some hard to find WM2003 file but at last... (They who were in your link weren’t there anymore.)
Now the memory is big and clean. All my apps installed...
A happy new year
Ola A.
