I had received a DVD from Ebay with various files on it for various systems with the hope of applying some of these to my MDA (which runs PPC 2003). Hopefully in the process learn something about how the internals of the MDA works. I was hoping to use that old classic called ‘Galaxions’ but see that the extension of this file is ‘NES’ does anyone know if this will run on a MDA or can it be converted or does anyone know where to get a PPC version of this?
Or indeed what type of file is it. The problem with buying these discs is that they combine everything and their granny on them but I only really wanted software for the MDA/PPC platform.
Thanks John.
a dvd with files on it ?
thats kinda vague i mean files can be pictures from some guys granma's birthday
or they can be programs or.......................
this is an emulator to play NES as in Nintendo Entertainment System games on pocketpcs

Ok. I've been trying to get this program (DVD to Pocket PC) working properly, with no success.
I downloaded the demo version, and it 'started' to make a 5 minute copy of a DVD. It ripped the DVD, then crashed when attempting to turn the MPG file into a WMV file. I was able to manually convert the file to WMV format, and it ran on the XDA.
The problem is, the program doesn't work anymore. I can't get it to rip ANY more DVD's, not even the same DVD I used initially.
I love the idea of the program, and was really looking forward to buying it if it worked properly. I have a shiny new 512MB SD card just begging to be used.
Does ANYONE out there have the actual, whole version of the program that they can tell me about? I have been burned before buying badly written Pocket PC programs, and don't want that to happen again. If someone can loan me the full version so I can evaluate it, I'd REALLY appreciate it!
I just want to make sure the program works properly. The demo seems to be really flaky.
Thanks.

The demo crashes for me too at the same stage you described, so I uninstalled the damn thing and moved on.
I'm using Win2K, and this may be my problem - the website says XP only. Whatever. Can't be bothered.
I guess this program must work - otherwise, why do they sell it? Crashing halfway through is an obvious bug, no?
I have the full version, running on xp pro, it works flawlessly, I leave a dvd in the drive overnight and in the morning I have a film for transferring to sd or cf card, never crashed on me either.
That's interesting.
I am also using XP Pro, and like I said in the previous post, the program (demo) 'started' ripping the DVD, then promptly crashed at the point when it was supposed to be converting it to WMV. I was highly disapointed to say the least.
I even tried uninstalling the program and reinstalling. The exact same thing occurred.
I'm using the full version on WindowsXP, and it's GREAT!! 8) 8) 8)
I uninstalled it again and reinstalled, and now it's working properly. VERY cool. I think it's worth the $25.00.
I also have the full version of this software, worth every penny
One thing worth mentioning is the Step 2 Only option from the Special menu
If the program doesn't complete the final step of converting to WMV, just select the Step 2 only option and it'll finish off
You can also trick it into converting any mpeg files into wmv by renaming them to DVD.mpg, placing them in root c:\ and running a Step 2 Only
Very useful for TV episodes, as it compresses Simpsons episodes to 30mb
I think I saw this software in PC Magazine. Are you saying that you can download an entire Movie DVD onto your PDA?
Yep,
It compresses a 90minute movie to approx. 128mb
so increase the size slightly for longer films
i've had two 90minute films no problem on a 256mb SD card, and haven't had any issues with slow load time or memory problems
Hope this helps
How do you download the DVD? Can you give me kind of a dumb guys version. I'm a bit new to this stuff.
Also, maybe I can ask you... I can't seem to open images with TIF extensions?
how to make a dvd small enough to fit on your 512MB sd card
http://www.makayama.com/dvdtopocketpc.html
the easist way to open tif is to use
irfanview to change the picture from tif to jpg
otherwise maybe this program does it

alternatives
This is slightly off the thread, but...
I personally thought that $25 was a bit steep for software that just rips a DVD, and then uses freely available microsoft tools to convert it into a small file. Theres a whole load of free stuff available that will do all this.
Another problem I had with the software is that it is not configurable. The demo 5 minute video I produced had a frame rate of 20 fps. The playback was noticably jerky. I would be prepared to suffer a 25% increase in file size for 25fps.
I would recommend anyone thinking of buying this software to check out the following free tools, to see if you can't get a result as good or better:

If the video files don't play in the built in media player, check out...

I have looked through many forums recently, and I have yet discovered at starcraft game for the pocket pc. I have finally realized that pocketDOS won't do the trick, because it is build upon 8-bit architecture while starcraft/warcraft was build upon 16-bit plus extended memory requirements.
After that I discovered that someone got warcraft II working on a PPC. To do this they used stratagus for pocket pc and then converted the original warcraft-game in wargus. I looked further and I discovered stargus (starcraft) which is also running on the same engine (stratagus).
AND...I wonder if someone on this forum would make stargus work with the stratagus pocket pc engine??
I even think people would pay to have starcraft on their PDA
PS: I'm a noob on programming myself so don't yell if i am totally wrong here..and my English is probably bad
Starcraft is a Win32 x86 32bit at-least 800x600 protected mode application using DirectX - I don't think it will run on any WiMo 640x480 PPC within the next 10 years unless someone finds impressive amounts of spare time to emulate an entire x86 Win32 environment along with DirectX...
there goes my dream...
thanks for the help anyway...
i know you can have bots on the pc version of quake. is it possible to bring this over to ppc, its essentially the exact same game so it should be doable. any ideas
could you not just add the pak, game dlls and any qc files in a subdirectory and then run "pocketquake -game <name-of-bot-folder>" like on the PC? You might be better off finding one that doesnt rely on dlls as i think they will probably have to be recompiled before they can be used on arm architecture.
well im really not to learned on stuff like that. i was wondering if anybody could send me a link for bots and where to place the files

i think that i am like your friend hahaha... so lets see what you can do with your mda to pimp it...
Themes: its easy to make and to get themes its all arround the web so its not problem.
Movies... if you want to transform a movie I recomendo to you if had a DVD rip it with spb mobile DVD... or... download video music files in flv or mp4 in youtube, and to play the files for videos or mp3 try the TCPMP .71 or .81 and add the flv codecs.
mmm Skins... the skins for WMP are available and the one that seem an ipod is there but i Think that you got the S2P it seems like the Ipod Touch get it right here on developing and hacking forum.
And for the slide locking system get the S2U2 is the same developer A_C.
so Pimp it again... by yourself dont depend for a friend in PDA's thing cause you never gonna get the taste of transform your PDA.
+ Que PPC at your service.

Mmmm I know so much more but what do you mean with this post.
Is there anyway i can install .cab files on the hd7 this is frustrating because i wanted to watch mkv rips that i have on my pc and so i wanted to install the coreplayer that worked so well on the hd2 but it's in .cab file but this phone doesn't let me use activesync so i can use explorer and move and copy files into the phone and install it like i did with windows mobile 6.5.
I don't like zune (because it only allows audio and video to be transferred not apps or games) is there any other software for the wm7 i can use for sync my hd7?
OMG i regret buying this phone already i swear i am going to smash it if i can't install coreplayer.
You can't install Coreplayer or any other WM6.5 apps on WP7, it's a completely different OS on a completely different Kernal. Kinda like asking if you can install the WM6.5 version of Coreplayer on iPhone.
Did you not look into the device/OS before you bought it?
I actually thought it would accept .cab files since it was running on windows mobile 6.5 and its the same family.
OK so what kind of a player should i use to watch videos from mkv format ?
and is there something else except Zune so i can explore my HD7 like i did with autosync ?
Microsoft started afresh with WP7, to differentiate the 2 they called the latest installment Windows PHONE 7, whereas the older generation kept it's Windows MOBILE name, however this doesn't seem to be the case anymore.
As for your MKV's, unless Zune automatically converts them for you when transferring them to your device, there is no way of watching them other than converting to .MP4 or .WMV.
No it's only Zune so far that will sync your stuff, similar to Apples love for iTunes, however Zune is much less intrusive
