pugs o2 rom - PDA2, XDA IIi, 2020i General

on average how long does it take to install??

Very quick. Five/ten minutes at the most, with the Windows installation app it's really as easy as pie. Stick the phone in the cradle, Run the installation app, it does all the other stuff (it puts your phone into bootloader, flashes each part of the ROM, and then reboots the phone once it's done).
How hard is that! (You say, 'oh, not hard at all,' to which I reply, 'I KNOW!') Understand that it's not some kind of funky custom install, the installation app was one provided for a particular model of HTC by Qtek (I believe), and it was hacked to not look for a particular device ID (allowing use on every phone), and the ROM is just the regular O2 ROM, O2 customised ExtROM and all, just with the upgraded radio stack (unless of course, you download his latest ROMs with the O2 stuff stripped out, which is also possible). The tool will work with any of these roms, all you have to do is follow the step-by-step instructions. Even I could manage it first time round no problems.

My XDAIIi is:
Rom version: 1.11.00WWE
Rom Date: 01/27/05
Radio version: 1.00.00
Protocol version: 1337.39
ExtRom: 1.11.923WWE
If upgrade with pug rom, what difference I will notice from my xdaIIi?
any benefits? where I can download the pug rom?
Thanks I am new to this forum

Well, as you can see from my sig, which is pug's cooked ROM:
Alpine, 1.11.162, 1.04 Radio...
ROM Version: 1.11.00 WWE
ROM date: 01/27/05
Radio version: 1.04.00
Protocol version: 1337.42
ExtROM version: 1.11.162 WWE
That's what you'll get - compare it to what you have at the moment, and you'll see the updates.

The difference in Radio ROM version seems to be just simple upgrades to the sound quality and signal etc. As for the ExtROM, that will depend on which one you choose... some may have just programs/plugins removed (the O2ActiveUI for example) others may have extra program suites added.

If you do upgrade the rom to one of the several cooked ones available on here, go with Pug's ROM which contains the 1.04 radio, the O2 stuff stripped out and the camera 'update' not included - apparently, without the camera update, the picture quality is loads better. I can't be bothered to reflash my 2i all over again and reinstall all my bits and pieces, just to try this out though, but other users report better quality without the O2 'upgrade'.
The O2 stuff is also useless, so get the O2StuffStripped at the very least. The 1.04 radio made a big difference for me (marginal signal before, I had to stand on one leg and put my arm out the window whilst wearing a tinfoil hat to get signal before in my house, but now so long as I'm on the first floor I can get signal! which is a tenfold improvement from before).

I did miss the O2 battery plugin for the Today screen, but I managed to find a seperate install for it on these forums anyway!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=26995

That much is true - initially I did too; however, I found that the O2 Plus battery meter is much better (and shows more information in the same pixel space), so I'm happy with that for now.

Whats the difference between the 2 and where would I get the Plus one from? Any chance you could post some screenshots showing the difference?
Would really appreciate it!!!
G

O2 Plus battery meter comes part of the O2 Plus application which you can install onto your Alpine (you have to get the patched version which will install on any device as opposed to the device-locked original installer which O2 Asia release for its customers) - just look on the forums for it.

How do you rate the pictures taken by a standart Alpine and by an Alpine using the modified ROM of pug (from 1 to 10, where 10 is the best and say it is a picture taken by a high quality digital camera working at 1.3 Mega pixel)?
If you can reply for indoor and outdoor seperately it will be more helpful.
Cheers.

The first custom rom for the Alpine released onto the forum, and the one I'm using (Modified_XDA_IIi_Upgrade_v1.11.162_Radio_1.04.rar) includes the 'update' which actually makes the camera quality worse. However, once it's on you can't just uninstall it, I found out I'd have to basically hard reset and install the latest ROM which doesn't have the stupid update included.
The ROM you want to use is Alpine_Ext-1.11.162_Radio-1.04_O2stuffstripped_Camera_Fixed.rar - I can't provide you with a quality comparison because I've not used that one (yet), but from what I hear from people who have used it, the quality is much better - much closer to how you'd expect it to be from an (albeit mobile phone, but still) 1.3mpixel camera.

Thank you for the detailed answer.

With all respect, can Pug verify this? Previously it was explained that the only difference between the 2 ROM was one still has O2 stuff in it, the other stripped.
Shouldnt be any difference in camera.

The camera_fixed aspect refers to the removal of a software patch applied to one of the DLLs on the phone used for the camera software - the changes the 'update' makes to the DLL in question actually makes the quality of subsequent images taken MUCH worse. Not installing this patch restores the camera quality to its original (and better) state.
I haven't tried it out myself, this ROM came out just after I'd hard reset and then totally restored my XDA from scratch, and I couldn't be bothered to start over a third time, but from people who have used the camera_fixed ROM, they report that the camera quality is in fact improved.

Alpine_Ext-1.11.162_Radio-1.04_O2stuffstripped_Camera_Fixed.rar by Pug did improve the camera quality, but this only setback was it would downgrade the recording sound quality.

and it didn't strip the O2 stuff imo, still got the o2 logo at start and the GUI thing.

The O2 splash screen can be removed by means of dropping a correctly-formatted image into the root directory of your phone and running a CAB file on your device (again, obtained from this forum) - and bingo, new splash screen.
Because the original image is in the ROM, and nowhere else, I also stripped out the original O2 splash screen from a ROM and posted it on this forum, in case anyone ever wants to sell their device and wipe it clean of all their installed stuff, without having to flash the ROM).
Interesting that you say the O2 GUI stuff is still there... Did you try the corporate install method?

Pug's ROM
I've been reading about pug's ROMs and have found (in the forum) some missing features after installing said ROMs...
These are the band selsctor, and screen rotation icon...
has anybody found out how to restore these?
I haven't tried the ROMs yet because I want to keep these said features after changing the ROM...
regarding the screen rotation icon, is the screenrotate.dll still part of the startup service? Memmaid can show the startup service to check whether it is still there or not. Also, maybe the rotate icon is not showing due to the registry settings?

Upgrading Radio Rom ONLY

Is that possible? Everything I've read involving upgrading the ROM; I'm not interested in loosing all my settings etc, I just want a better radio ROM since mine looses EDGE/GPRS connection periodically. Is there a way to do this? Thanks.
This is possible to do. The files are in the usual place, and remember to unlock your CID first.
Be aware that it may claim that it will change your OS Rom version and/ir it may overestimate the time required--this is normal. Your OS Rom will stay the same and it should take only a minute or two.
I upgraded mine the night before last. I didn't use CID unlock or anything. I just d/l'd the file Wizard_GSM_11210.exe from the ftp and double clicked on it. It does tell you that you will lose everything and your OS is being upgraded, but that did not happen, it was just compiled with that installer, that's all, so don't worry.
My signal is stronger and my speakerphone works great now. I lost nothing and nothing else was changed.
Good luck.
Yep - done on my T-Mobile MDA. The stock radio ROM sucked bananas.
Will it adversely affect my Cingular 8125 in any way?
works!
Thanks for the quick reply guys. I installed the Wiz radio rom from the FTP site and it worked. EDGE and even Wifi seemed mroe stable and faster now. And all my data's still there!
As for the 8125, my friend got one of them and I'll ask him to try updating his radio rom with this same file and see if it breaks it.
Wow! It really does make a tremendous difference, thanks fellas!
which is the last version of the RADIO ROM ?
I got 01.13.10 inside the last WWE qtek wizard upgrade (1.6.7.1)
That's probably it. My phone came with 1.09 and the ROM I just applied is 1.12.
Would upgrading my MDA's Radio ROM to 1.13.10 adversely effect my battery life?
Well, if you get signals where you had none before, you might use the phone a lot more, so that would use more energy.
Seriously, I haven't noticed any difference in my battery's state of charge or rate of discharge.
So is it safe to say that the Radio ROM upgrades (1.12/1.13) are better than the stock US TMo MDA Radio ROM? I'm looking to upgrade but don't want to wind up with worse reception and/or a void warranty. Suggestions?
you could always use aWizard and backup your radio so if you need to return the unit for any reason, you could restore the old rom. i backed all of my stuff up and its sittin on in a folder hidden away
Thanks for the suggestion blazin...I'll have to start the process of learning about aWizard and how to use it.
Settings and whatnot
I have been trying to figure out the pluses to tampering, and this is one of the first threads where I have actually found a real positive. I am kinda simple though I have been weighing the options of flashing the ROM to reclaim some storage. I LIKE the voice dial on it right now. I could care less about the pdf viewer. I can download adobe and install it to SD. What other cabs in the extended ROM can I do without, how much storage can I reclaim, and how stable is the ROM I obtain. How difficult will it be to get the settings right to make good calls. I don't use edge or gprs for data. I do use wifi at home and around town. Is there a "for dummies" primer on how to do this. I am not a complete rookie with PPC, but I have no programming knowledge whatsoever. These threads rapidly leave me in the dust. I feel like a mule looking at a new gate quite often.

8125 w/ 2.16.9.101: looking for feedback on stability

Any of you 8125 owners who installed the imate 2.16.9.101 release have any new feedback on how it's going? Are there still issues with the connection icons or wifi connectivity?
I'm eager to get push mail working and have not been able to get a straight answer from a dozen different folks at Cingular on when their release will come out...so I might give the imate release a shot.
What about going back to the shipping Cingular version after installing the imate update - is it easy/possible? Any problems with extended ROM?
thx
I never even used the phone with the original cingular firmware, I went directly to the Q-tek Test rom. From that rom to this rom, the radios seem a little better (getting better signal, edge seems slightly faster, wifi picks up network much faster) and for some reason the whole feel is "snappier" seems like the menus and such load faster. I haven't had any stability issues, and push is working perfect.
I dont' know about the much faster part, but mine is very stable since i removed battery pack pro. I have SPB's power plus as well as their weather software.
if there are any software you want tested just let me know. Well if I can atleast run it without having to buy it, (i.e. Demos, etc.)
Bluetooth, Wifi, Edge, and signal are all real good. (signal on par with 1.12 radio as well as faster to get a signal than it was)
Battery icon is NOT on the bottom and does NOT show more than 2 bars ( so you have full, somewhere in between, and low).
Battery life seems pretty good, but I can't compare it to any other version as I had the phone 36 hours before I upgraded it to this version.
Great thanks for the feedback yall. So once I do the upgrade, how hard will it be to go back to the shipped version if I ever need to? I have everything backed up using awizard, but I understand there could be problems trying to go to a previous version. I think downgrading via the bootloader mode requires executable rom images, but there isn't one available for the shipping version.
You can still downgrade to an old imate ROM and then use aWizard to restore your cingular ROM.
I have installed it on my Qtek 9100.
I hanged 5 times in 2 days.
What is more annoying is when it hangs and
someone tries to call me at the same time, the
other party hears my phone ringing, but my
Qtek is dead silent.

Is your wifi working OK? If so, did you install any of the cingular exrom customizations?
Just curious, because I installed the released imate rom and everything is working like a champ except wifi. I installed some of the original customizations from the cingular exrom and I wonder if one of those cabs did something to the wifi config...
What kind of porblems are you having with the wifi?

It won't turn on.. =)
I thought perhaps it was one of the cingular customization cabs I installed from the original exrom, but now I'm not so sure. I looked at all the cabs and the only one that relates to wifi is the cab that sets the key to enable talking to 802.11g APs.
In comm manager, if I click the wifi icon, it appears to attempt to start wifi, but then goes back to an "x" over the wifi button. The wifi radio doesn't start and the left LED that blinks when wifi is on does not come on.
I wish there were some logs to look at on this thing to see why it's failing to start wifi..
Solved the wifi problem. It appears to be related to something in one of the original 8125 exrom cabs. I reinstalled the new imate rom, skipped the imate exrom install, and only installed a couple cabs from the 8125 exrom. The cabs I installed that did not affect wifi were the mms config, the gprs account config, and the edge icon.
All is now well. If I had the time and patience I'd tear apart the original 8125 cabs to see which one might cause wifi probs, but at this point it's not necessary.
I'll stick with it as-is now until cingular releases their own update...assuming that happens before the hermes is out.. =)
I have a Dopod 838 (identical to 8125, I suppose). The new ROM has worked awesome for me. Better in every way. Even the infamous Activesyn problem went away
I am getting ready to take the plunge...just in case...
does anyone have the original 8125 ROM?
I use SPB backup can restore a backup after I upgrade?
I installed this rom on my 9100, and it is much better than it was with any of the other roms including the original shipped rom!
The radio is much clearer and the wifi hooks up faster and runs better, and I have had absolutely NO lock ups at all.
Later
I am thinking of installing it on an 8125...
Without a backup 'known good' ROM to revert back to I am cautious

I added the extROM files one by one to see which one caused the wifi issue and it was Signed-gprsstall_128.sa.cab...so far. It was only the third one in a series of 17. I'll see what happens when I add the rest. This cab file moves a radio.dll file around.
I've installed this ROM on 2 8125's. Much better and faster than Cingular's ROM. The only thing I did was to install the Cingulcustomize_No_Emails.cab, Microsoft Voice and TRE Pocket PC registry editor and remove all traces of the Voice Command. WiFi connects to my secured access point flawlessly (though I never use WiFi) and the AKU2 push email typically has my emails coming in in about 8-10 seconds from my Exchange 2003 server. Very infrequent lockups, much less than any other ROM I've installed.
Just my two cents worth ...

Step by step to 2.16
I have a cingular 8125. I'm no stranger to flashing roms, I had a SX66 that was running WM5 and I reloladed it all the time. I'd like to see a step by step guide for unlocking the ext rom, flashing the radio and system roms for the 8125. Anyone know a post with that info in it?
Thanks!

Interesting you say you're no stranger to flashing ROMs but then ask for a step by step.
It's laid out quite well in several topics, but basically:
-Use awizard and enable rapi
-Use awizard and CID unlock
-Use awizard to back up Extrom, radio, splash, os
-Run the executable RUU installer for the imate
-On first boot, as soon as you get prompted to choose a carrier, do a soft reset to prevent the imate ext rom stuff from loading
-Install desired customization items from your backed up cingular ext rom. Any of them can be installed EXCPET the gprsstall cab - it will kill your wifi.
There is currently no way to unlock the ext rom in the lates imate upgrade, so you're stuck with what's in there, but you don't have to let it install.

Newbie......want most stable 2003SE for QTEK 9090

At the moment I hate my 1 week old QTEK 9090.
To enable GPRS I normally have to reboot.
Sometimes to get Wifi and BT working I have to reboot.
GPRS drops out during a phone call
Sometimes I have to reboot when there is no sound at all on the device. Just no sound at all.
I have had it a week. Probably had to reboot it at least 3 times a day and the reboot is LONG!
Wow such a good concept let down by a HUGE number of bugs
What version rom and radio does your 9090 use? (start menu>settings>device information)
check here
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=BA_Upgrades
for latest official rom release by your phones manufacturer. Possibly an upgrade is beneficial! Either that, or your phone may have hardware issues. Check your service provider for repair/rma services.
Good luck!
Thanks for that.
I will check. One issue I have a work around for....
I only lose sound when I close down Windows Media Player before I stop the music. Stop it first and then close and all is fine. That is a start.
I wish the ROM upgrades were simpler like on my Treo 650.....upgrade does a backup, flashes the new ROM and then brings back the data....
I found my device and rom on that link ta. So does that mean I have the latets for my device....
This is exactly my 9090:
Qtek WWE OP ID 1.40.00 1.40.147 1.12.00
Protocol version 1337.42
So I must have the latest ROM for my device...ripper.
Rom
Yeah you have the latest rom. when i 1st got my qtek i had some strange issues as well. what i ended up doing was to install a different rom (downgrade) and then install back to my rom (latest version). Hey presto my pda was running much smother.
Take your time to read all the info on the forum and most of all read wiki!! It takes some time to get used to wm2003se if your switching from palm. Have fun!!!
Thanks.
I have used many PPC devices as well. Last one was AXIM X50V. Before that was IPAQ 2210, IPAQ 1930.......
From the 2210 onwards everything was nice and stable.
Just this device.....!!
If I could get it to reliably start up GPRS and wireless every time I would be fine. BT is not such an issue.
Now I have solved my sound problem that is excellent.
good bye wm2003se
I will be really honest with you!!! when i was using my pda with wm2003se i had to soft reset my device 5-6 times a day....wifi being the biggest problem. needles to say it was critical to have a good backup software (Sprite). after being really frustrated i found this site....(thanks god)....know i use wm5 and guess what after 8 weeks i have not had to soft reset my device once. wm5 at the moment is not perfect but for me its stable and quick enough.
Cool....so moving my QTEK 9090 to WM5 what should I look out for? What are the issues? Will I get anything else? Lose anything?
Stability is 100% key for, but in terms of features, WM2003SE has everything i need. It just doesn't work all of the time.
What WM5 ROM do you recommend?
Oops I see Ivan....got a link?
So what is the best procedure to do the backup?
Can I easily go back to the original ROM?
Ivan 4.3
it really depends how you use your pda and what kind of functionality you want. for me speed and stability are essential. i dont use blue tooth to much just to transfer data...(no headset). as all users of wm5 will tell you there are pros and cons with each wm5 rom. my advice is to read the forums and pick a version that best suits your needs. in any case you will have to do some hacks to really bring the best out of your device on wm5. see my sig for what i have installed.
forgot to answer your question. to downgrade your device is much easier than to upgrade. before you go down this road please READ wiki carefully!!!

Looks like the same ROM that was leaked a few days ago. This contains the same Ext ROM that I used to create the Mr. Clean AKU 2.3 T-Mobile UK ROM.
I've not yet tried upgrading the ROM on my UK Vario, but I guess now is the time to think about it. I want to keep my stored SMS and MMS messages, but everything else on the machine I'll probably clean-install and re-tweak as necessary once I get the new ROM flashed. I've got a good idea of what I do and don't want in my Vario after 5 months use, and I guess now would be a great time to get rid of all the junk that's probably clogging up the registry by now.
A couple of questions:
I know I can make a backup copy of the current ROM onto a clean SD card, but can I back it up onto a partially used card (i.e. using the file system, rather than raw data blocks).
I backup my Vario regularly using SPB Backup. Can the SPB Restore utility restore just my SMS/MMS messages (including user-created folders) without reinstalling anything else, so I can keep a nice clean machine?
The UK T-Mobile release is 2.0, whereas "Mr Clean ROM" is 2.3. I'm guessing 2.3 is better, but what am I likely to lose (if anything) that's on the T-Mobile ROM? Is the stereo bluetooth headset facility on both? I've already removed most of the obvious T-Mobile pink stuff, and put in a better dialler skin, etc. In fact, I don't really want T-Mobile's dialler skin at all, as I've been trying to get rid of their modified history & speeddial icons for ages!
Finally, what about reinstalling things like TomTom - will doing so remove my user-defined favourite place settings, etc? (my maps are stored on SD card)
Thanks for any advice, I'm a little nervous here...
Andre
^^^ Same questions and concerns for me.
Also, I flashed my T-Mobile UK MDA from original ROM to Qtek 2.17 ROM a month ago. I SIM & CID unlocked it in the process using Lokiwiz 0.2b - do I need to prep the phone with Lokiwiz 0.3 before flashing the MDA to keep it unlocked?
Cheers in advance.

Things I've noticed so far:
1)
The Comms screen has been radically changed, adding a "push" button (deactivated on my uk t-mobile vario for some reason) and another button that looks like a ppc to ppc connection.
2)
The battery icon has moved from the bottom right corner to the top right corner, on the top panel, (where the time used to be) and has turned an ugly shade of green. I presume it goes yellow -> red when on low power.
3)
In the programs, something called "SAP Settings" has been added.
It's used for remote sim access apparently.
4)
"Running Programs" is now a program and can be seen on the start menu
6)
"Comm manager is now a program that appears on the "running programs" list.
5)
When starting up, it displays the t-mobile screen followed by the WINDOWS MOBILE screen instead of just the t-mobile screen.
Finally, this could because of a cleaner registry and stuff, but it does feel somewhat more efficient.
So would the early adopters say it is better or worse than the mighty summiter/Mr Clean (Uk) versions
Bhayani
Right now I like the Mr Clean version better, but I only had that on for a weekend and the new one has only been on for an hour or so.
Personally after a day with it I'm tempted to go back to the qtek 2.17 rom
Hi can someone post up the MMS settings as I didn't note them down when I updated the rom - doh! UK of course.

Thats interesting.... Im using a Qtek 2.17 ROM at the moment and am considering upgrading, but Im holding back at the moment. What dont you like?
Bad news here. I've been running the Mr Clean Comes to London ROM for a few days with no problems at all and before that one of the Qtek ones and the unit never reset itself which it had ben doing with the T-Mobile ROM from the start of the year. I am happy with the performance of the new T-Mobile ROM after installing it yesterday but overnight it went back to soft resetting itself as all of my open programs were shut down this morning. Also when I turned it on the screen wasn't responding so I ended up doing another reset.
I'll leave it over the weekend but it looks like the spontaneous reset problem hasn't been resolved. Strange that T-Mobile can't fix that but all the other ROMs seem to have it licked!

Of course it could be something T-Mobile has put in that's causing it. I'm thinking Mr Clean is the way to go...

Problems, repairable?

Well my Kaiser has been through a bit of ware and tare as normal, but hasn't been able to take as much as the Hermes it seems. I'm having the following problems,
1. Screen can be unresponsive intermittently.
2. Some keyboard keys you really have to push HARD to work
3. if I use the Hands Free kit and remove it, next time I make a phone call the Microphone and/or the Ear speaker(on the unit) will not function.
The Unit is still under warranty, however I've flashed a different ROM on it. Providing I can an original or Official upgraded ROM, would these faults be covered?
My unit is a HTC TyTN II, bought from 3 Australia on a contract. so if someone would like to help me find the ROM that'd also be good (I've looked at the Stock ROM list but haven't found any 3 Australia Roms.)
Many thanks
did your problems exist before you upgraded the ROM? if the problems appeared exactly AFTER upgrading your ROM, then problems 1 and 3 should be solvable (or can be reduced) by looking into flashing a compatible RADIO ROM (matching the ROM with a suitable radio ROM version is paramount to avoiding speaker and screen freeze problems). read the wiki for more information.
if the problems appeared randomly on their own, it could indeed indicate a hardware problem.
good luck!
EDIT: my bad, i totally forgot to mention the significance of the SPL version you are using with the ROM. once again, assuming the problems appeared exactly after the ROM upgrade, it is important to match BOTH the RADIO ROM as well as the SPL version with the ROM you have on your device.
SPL mismatches are known to cause screen freeze and speaker issues and RADIO mismatches are known to cause camera and speaker issues.
Hey,
Nah they didn't happen straight after, Well perhaps the Hands Free, but not sure.
With the SPL / Radio, It was all a bit too overwhelming to see what's compatible, so I just got the most recent SPL, Radio and Rom when I upgraded.
unlike normal software where "latest is greatest" usually, ROMs are a different beast...to get your device to purr along happily, it is imperitive to have a combination of ROM + Radio + SPL that is known to work correctly. unfortunately, the latest is greatest approach simply doesn't work and you will invariably end up facing strange otherwise inexplicable issues. there are issues reported rampantly of screen issues being solved by SPL upgrades...similarly speaker/sound issues are also reported and solved with a high frequency by ensuring fully matched combinations.
its a one-time read...start at the wiki...also search for mskip's excellent newbie ROM flashing guide...good luck!
Ahk, cheers for the heads up.
I might try what your using, as my rom is HyperDragon III. Would you be as kind to provide links for your SPL Rom and Radio?
Ta
you should be reading about all of this in the kaiser wiki and especially in the HyperDragon thread
the links to the wiki thread, the hyperdragon thread, as well as the links to my SPL thread and my radio thread are ALL already in my signature...have a look see!
as a summary for you (cuz you're not doing enough reading and i'm feeling good today ), just stick to the radio that comes with the ROM but do install cmonex hard SPL 3.29 to "complete" the combination recommended by the chef of that ROM
As you suggested, I read up about Radio's ,SPL's and ROM's. So I'm going to give it a go, however I'm trying to find Hyper Dragon IV, but can't find a DL link.
Let us know if the new Radio and ROM's work.
I'm having some similar issues too
I Gave up, restored it to it's initial state and sent it on warranty. Going to be without it for upto 6 weeks!!!
