Seems to be an inordinate amount of dissatisfaction with "this ROM" or "that Radio" due to perceived sudden battery drain.
I believe that I have far more variance in battery drain, day to day with the same setup, than I have due to changing ROM or Radio.
I have sometimes run the exact same setup for several days in a row, yet one day it will seem like battery is lasting forever, and another day it seems that battery is draining very rapidly.
IMHO, of all the criteria of importance in evaluating a new ROM or Radio, battery drain is towards the bottom of the list. Just like my laptop, I make sure that I always am prepared to renew my charge - I have a charger at the office, at home, and in the car - at all times! My Wizard is my everyday tool, and function and stability are way more important than battery life. I plug in and gas up whenever I get the chance, so I have never had an issue with running out of juice!
My opinion is that charge and drain cycles, and program use, probably account for 90% of the perceived variance.
Am I the only one that thinks that battery drain issues are over-hyped?

Your probably not the only one who thinks the issue is over-hyped ,that said it is very much an important issue. I'm not sure that I would list it at the top of my must haves list but isn't anywhere near the bottom. A stable working rom is what matters most but what use is it if requires you keep a spare battery in pocket to use it. These variances are certainly not figments of our imagination as I have seen my wizard go from lasting 3 days to less than one with no change in the useage profile.
I've never had an issue with battery drain. But -- like you -- I keep my Wizard "topped off" with a charger at my desk at work, in the car and a desktop cradle/charger at home. When my battery life drops below 80% it goes on the charger wherever I am.
I also find that my battery life is in direct relation to running apps/Today plugins more than ROM issues. So, if I don't run some of the more power-intensive apps, my battery lasts longer.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. . .
Typically there is one or more programs that cause the battery to drop quickly. I know that recently after I performed a hard reset on my x-bow install (Orwell's), my battery drain problems went away. However, when I restored the backup, they came back so I went ahead and performed another hard reset, and installed all my programs one by one again. After a couple of times doing this, the problem finally went away. Believe me, it got so aggravating at one point that I switched back to AKU 3.2. I did install the 02.61.11 radio rom, and I think that may have helped.
The issue is not overhyped. I know that it happens, but a lot can be resolved by being patient with what we install and when we do it.

Hi Actually, yesterday I took my phone from the charger at 100% at 7AM, by 6PM I had less than 50%. Only used it twice for a regular call and a couple of texst messages. Today it is a lot better. It alternates between fast drain on one day and then another day it could be good. I am using Faria's V2 rom, 8mb pool. As far as the memory leak in Faria's V1, a beta version of today agenda came out that I am using on Faria's V2 and have not had memory leak issues. All in all, it's a great rom, even if it has the battery issues, Cingular did a crappy job with the original rom.
ROM upgrades
ROM upgrades reset the battery history, so that it has to learn how long it lasts. This makes for a lot of variance in battery percentage, but not in voltage; all it is doing is learning how voltage translates into battery duration. Usually just a day or two after a new ROM and battery drop stabilizes. But it never learns perfectly -- my battery stays at 100% for hours and then starts falling a percent or two an hour.
Wifi uses up a lot of power. Just being connected to a bluetooth headset doesn't seem to use much but if it is searching for the headset (e.g. because it is off) then it uses a lot of power, although not as much as wifi. Searching for GSM also uses a lot of power and if I know I will be out of touch for a long period of time I turn off the phone, but just being connected to GSM doesn't seem to use much.
on a thread i read to use the device unlocked option, it worked for me
Exactly, the biggest factors for battery usage are (apart from wifi and using applications of course):
1) reception quality
2) data connection
example 1: London, crap reception at home, average usage, two mailboxes checking mail every 5mins, gprs always on : 7am - 100%, 8pm - 25%
example 2: Same as above but one email checked every 15min, second every 30min : 7am - 100%, 8pm - 50%
example 3: Egypt, reception always excellent, no data connection, usage SLIGHTLY less: 7am - 100%, 8pm - 94%!!!
Anyway, that's the price for the performance I guess, if the battery life would be the most important thing, I would buy Nokia 6310...
Here's an amazing discovery. My phone was at 25% in about 8 hours. I will leave the phone at 100% at night and it will be at 75% the next morning. By chance I purchased a brand new battery to place in another phone that had a broken usb. I placed the brand new battery in my old phone to charge it and at 100% I removed it and placed my old battery and charged it to 100%. Now I leave my phone at 100% at night and the next morning its at 100%. Go figure...... Overnight, the phone radio is on and so is bluetooth
Suspicion, drain rate is a memory issue....... comments

I totaly agree, I have my PDA hooked to Exchange with wireless active sync and full attachment download. If I was to say get 5 emails with 10 MB attachments, and then have a 2 hour conversation with some one I haven't talked to in a while I would most definately use more of my charge that day.
The point is that to me battery drain is more about usage either perceived or not. I set my PDA to do whatever it wants, so that is what it does.
One thing that i have noticed is how you charge your Phone. I have noticed that if i charge my phone with the home wall charger i'll have to charge later that night. But if i charge it thru the USB cord from my computer, the phone stays charged for almost 2 days. Thats why i only charge my phone now thru the usb cable. if you dont believe try it out and you will be amazed.

that's quite strange - definitely not the case for me...
well everyone i work with here has a pocket pc and i told them to try that out and they actually noticed a difference in how long the battery would stay charged even with regular usage of the device. So either this must work or im a real good manipulator.
Ok so if you dont know the 8925 has probably the worst battery life of any HTC phones I have ever used. It was like they decided to put all the latest and greatest into a shell sexier than hell, then give it a old 8125 battery,
The 8125 had what a 1250mAh battery, so they give the 8925 a 1350mAh, makes no since. I am still use to my P990i having a 1500mAh battery and getting 7-9 hours of play time and a 10-18 day stand by time.
Are their any upgraded batteries out yet? if no I may just have to get a second battery and charger cause I cannot go the last 4 hours of my day without a phone. Oh and a car charger is out of the question. I swear those things were made by battery companies to kill you battery faster than shizzit.
Actually, I have found that after a few full charges and running the battery down to about 5% it lasts pretty good.
The first day I had it I had to charge it after about 4-5 hours. Now I am using it most of the day.
if I'm 3Ging and/or GPSing, it goes fast.
if i'm not doing those but doing anything else, it lasts a long time. Easily a whole day.
3G is a huge strain on battery life. Don't expect to get anywhere near the battery life you did with the 8125 if you are using 3G.
With my 8525 I would get 9 hours of battery life at the most (100%-0). With the Tilt, I have been getting about 12 hours of battery life with about the same amount of use.
I run WL push email all day and browse the web pretty heavily.
Make sure to condition your battery by running it all the way down to 0 before you recharge a few times.
I have been conditioning the hell out of my battery so far, 100% down to %5ish, 100 to 5 100 to 5, only charges it and gone through like 3 cycles so far. Hopefully I will see something soon
anyone know of any batteries out there yet? if no I will put an order in for another OEM HTC

lol. that's a trust worthy site.
Just a note - conditioning a LiIon battery has zero affect on its charge capacity.
I'm getting between 8-10 hours of very active use and 10-16 hours of life when I'm not on the silly thing all the time. SPB Pocket Plus calculates my battery life at around 10-11 hours, and it's usually pretty good at estimating it once it's seen enough data.
Nevertheless, I can also attest to the fact that the battery life of my Kaiser is increasing. I'd say its about 25-30% better than when I first started using it a few weeks ago.

Where do you see this feature in Pocket Plus?
I am hoping Slueth is right about the battery life increasing over time. Mine isn't a 4th of what the 8125 or 8525 was. The comments on 3G being a huge drain I can't agree with. The 8525 and 8125 had the same battery consumption and I could get a full day of regular usage on both.
I can say using the Kaiser rom over the at&t rom made a noticeable improvement.
I live in HSDPA nation [Bay Area]. My tilt gets pushed to limits everyday. I have mobile shell installed with weather update, push email and active sync through exchange server, use ICS with laptop on the go. I can get through the day with heavy use and the battery never falls below 40%. At 11:00PM last night, I had 75% left on my battery level indicator.
I would say it's about 20-30% better than Hermes' battery performance.

That's AMAZING! I wish I could have spent 75% by then and still have 25% left. I use everything you mentioned too but I barely make it t 7 or 8 pm before my tilt turns off at 1% battery level so I have to stick it in the charger as soon as I get home from work at about 6'ish.

Add the battery meter to one of your tabs and look at the options for the meter by tap & hold - options. It allows you to set a fixed battery life or use a statistically estimated duration.

It all depends on your actual data usage. If you aren't transmitting a lot of data, then the HDSPA usage won't have a significant effect because it isn't on all that frequently. If you do, you'll definitely notice a difference.
Mine was showing about 75% this morning and is now at 57% (5:30pm) - that is following three or four short phone calls, several web page downloads, several synchronisations via bluetooth and ten or fifteen minutes experimenting with the business card scanner.
I do agree with other comments here that battery life improves after several charge/discharge cycles. This Kaiser replaces my old Hermes - I think the battery life may not be quite as good, but it isn't vastly worse - trouble is that it has so many fun things to play with that you just do more with it! Just the GPS alone will draw that battery down if you use it too much - my hand-held Garmin can flatten a pair of high capacity AAs in less than 24 hours - and that is not powering a 3g transceiver and bluetooth at the same time.

i must say, i have the case of not able to leave my phone in my pocket. I always have to have my phone out, turn on from sleep and do something with it. If I'm able to resist this temptation, my phone can last the whole day going down to 50%. If I'm messing around with it, then it could go below.
I noticed that Skype is a MAJOR draw on the battery.
When I had skype on and logged in, the USB charger could barely hold the charge even ... when I was also using GPS with Google maps the battery life was visibly going down.
After using the device more normally now I get quite decent battery life.
The real test will come when I fly cross country and read an ebook on it.
If i can resist the urge to play with the GPS i can get about 2 days out of mine, but my useage is pretty light. I am using Direct Push with my exchange server, and get about 15 emails a day. The TCP timeout on my firewall is set to 1 hour, so i think that helps too. I am using the black & blue comm manager with 3g option, and i leave 3g off(it switches between 3g and Edge all day at work, and i heard that can lower battery significantly). I only enable 3g if i tether, and even then 3g coverage in my area SUCKS! Verizon has EVDO everywhere here, at&t needs to get their ass in gear . Overall i'm happy with the battery life. I've setup a few PDA's for some of my users here so i wasn't expecting anything great (although our two blackjack users seem very happy with battery life).
Just placed an order for the 1600 mAh Tilt battery
Hi,
I was confused by the different batteries available for the Tilt at www.batteryupgrade.com , so at I e-mailed them this message,
Just found your site, and am interested in purchasing a battery for my ATT Tilt/HTC Kaiser however; when I looked at my battery it does say KAIS 160, but the P/N is 35H00086-00M, and not 35H00088-00M. The device is ATT Branded, and in the device info on the phone, model number just says Kaiser, not Kaiser120 etc. Is there any difference, what battery should I get?
they gave me this link-
http://www.batteryupgrade.com/product_detail.php?productId=75070772&searchphrase=htc%2520kaiser
Just waiting to see if it does help alot, if not, I'll at least have two batteries now! lol

Terrible so far... but i've only been through one charge cycle, almost. I topped off the out of the box battery. From there it's been plugged into the computer while i was adding w***z (i mean perfectly legal software). So I've never actually winded it down to 0.
Is it bad to keep topping it off like this?
The battery life i've been having probably wouldn't even last a day but i should probably go down to 5% before i charge it again and see if it improves.
My motto with this phone is "Who needs decent battery life if you've got GPS, a 3MP camera, an unbelievable library of third pary software, 3G, a fully qwerty keyboard, gorgeous touch screen, and tilting screen?"
looks like I have made my life's worst decision of buying Diamond.
This diamond sucks battery like leech. The battery drops 25% within 10 mins of talk with
all programs off, only phone functions on. Another few calls ( 10-20 mins) and some config settings the battery is flat at 28%. Guys ! are you facing the same. I did some observations,
It takes appx 460ma + while on call( screen on ) ,
drops to 275ma + while on call when the screen is off.
goes to 440ma + for GPRS ( internet , data etc) ( phone on )
takes appx 150ma + with Bluetooth on (( phone on ))
goes to 175ma+ with WIFI on (( phone on ))
remains IDLE with 50ma+ ( no call phone On)
I am checking this on battery status and Power gaurd.
Please suggest if the above power consumptions patterns are fine....
ROM : 1.37.720.2 WWE
ROM Date : 06/16/08
Radio version 1.00.25.03
Left for work this morning at 9:30 (yes, I was late) with my battery at 100%.
Talked for about 40 min, updated weather 3 or 4 times, read for about 20 min during lunch break.
When I got back home at 18:30, my battery was at 68%.
Please note that I applied most (if not all) of the tweaks found on this site. Oh, and my screen backlighting was on Auto.

Update your ROM and also make sure you use the .05 radio, as it has been shown to be better with battery life.
I find on average my phone will last 2 and a half days or so with moderate usage (i.e. few calls/day, texts, internet, few apps run, bit of gps), you may also consider changing your screen brightness to a low'ish setting as this will help preserve battery life and turning gprs off manually. but I do keep mine on auto brightness and with GPRS on the normal default setting
a friend of mine uses the standard radio (.03) without using any tweaks and his battery lasts about 2 days (he calls a lot of people, uses wifi at least once a day)...
I can't tell my experiences because I'm using tweaks...
I've been having similar problems, with the battery sometimes lasting just 12 hours with no usage at all.
Yesterday, my battery ran completely flat, but today things are loads better (still 50% left after 13 hours, including some calls and browsing on 3G/HSDPA).
I'm starting to think that the problems were being caused by a program running in the background which got killed when my phone battery ran out. I'll do some tests over the next few days to try to find out, but I guess the main possibilities are GSen, Opera, Google Maps, or ActiveSync.
Has anyone else experienced similar problems with any of these apps?

My baby will get me through the whole laboral day 8:00am to around 7:30pm.
When I get home batt is around 10% left. I let it die then charge.
On the phone for about 40 30 minutes on various calls.
Weather check twice.
Emails 4 times.
And a quick look at xda-developers.
Works fine, you just have to learn how to manage the Diamond. Im still waiting for a new battery though.
Luck Fellas!

A bit OT, but the Li-Ion batteries doesn't like to die out completely.
I had a phone interview today, around 55 min speaking and the battery dropped from 100% to 70%, so not that bad!

As far as I know it's OK to do a full charging cycle every some time, like once per month or so.
My battery easily lasts 2 days with moderate use
I get 2 days out of mine - note also that battery life improves markedly after a few charging cycles - mine ran down scarily fast the first 2 or 3 days!

This is what I know:
Every battery (doesent matter what kind) has for example 1000 charge cycles that will be 100% Strong. After the 1000 charges the rate starts to fall. You get only 90% after the 1000 charges ect.......
Soooo
You have to make the best out of your charges. The best way of doing this is by drastically cutting of charge sessions. You let it die and then charge it FULLY (and by fully i say till the Diamond tells you its full with its kick a** full circle.
Thats all fellas. Lucks to all!

Same with me. The first two or three days I was barely getting a whole day. I use push email constantly and make regular calls. I occaisonally use GPS. My battery happily lasts two days, although it is very low by the end of the second day. I also turn the phone off overnight.

I found this to be my biggest problem. If I turn this on my battery is fully flat in about 6 hours. Until my new 1800mah battery arrives, i'm back to pop/smtp.
Just to be on the safe side I bought a cradle which also charges a spare battery, an extra ordinary size battery and every night charge the device and the spare. First thing in the morning I swap the batteries over and pack the fully charged spare. Got mine from gpsforless and it cost £17.99 with the spare battery. Bargain.
blimey, that was a bargain considering it includes a spare battery as well!

Got the same one. So far the battery life has not been great but I am hoping it will improve over time as some people are reportin. Will get a 1800 battery for power use.

I had exactly the same problem where my diamond battery barely lasted 3 hours.
Turned out to be a faulty phone, not the battery. Tell tale sign is if the Diamond gets hot below the battery, not the actual battery
Hi
I have noticed when I soft reset my phone the battery drops anywere from 5% up to about 70%! It varies from rom to rom. If i plug it in and softreset it a couple of times the battery goes up to around what it use to be. If it makes a difference I flash roms alot and don't usually install to many applications.
Is this normal at all or is my battery faulty? It's only about 8 months old.
Any ideas? Tips I could try?
Thanks
Imran
you know, i have the same problem when installing, touch x legendary rom, battery is about 96,96% but when i install that rom, battery drops down to 8,7%, i just plug in power for second, and battery jumps to 98%, and then all working fine...
The way phones and other devices display their state of charge (%) isn't always accurate, hence why it jumps back up 5% after plugging it in. I don't think your battery is unreliable, it's just reporting the wrong percent of charge...
I see. Mine is more like 50% so I guess mine is just really wrong! any ideas for fixing this?
Also i have the typical xperia x1 problem were it thinks the headphones are plugged in for the last 4 days. I have plugging and unplugging the headphones in heaps but it doesn't seem to work
Thanks
I have the same problem.
Phone has one year and 8 months.
Wine phone or battery?
I just got exact problem this morning
I agree with comment above, I think it just battery indicator not accurately represented battery state.
I also noticed the problem happened when I get my phone idle for a while
I was just going to start a new thread about this kind of thing. My phone's original battery has run out at anywhere between 0 and 30%... it tends to go for a couple of days if I don't use the phone much. I've tried recalibration and it doesn't really help. I thought that was bad, but I just bought a backup battery and it's even worse... yesterday it went from 100 to 50% over half a day on standby, then I used it for about ten minutes and it just went off! At 50%!
I was only expecting rubbish life from the cheap battery but at least report the charge properly so I have a chance! Old phones could always do it... why can't one that cost hundreds of pounds when it was new?
I take it there's nothing you can really do?
Something is wrong with the way the phone indicates the battery charge. For example, when I play on my Milestone and the battery is getting close to 20%, after a few minutes it drops to 15% in a few minutes then immediately to 5% and 1%. Also I noticed that even though it indicates it only has 1% battery left, it still is able to run for 20-30 more minutes (perhaps less) with the screen on. Also putting it to charge right after it indicates 5-1% boosts it up instantly to 20% or sometimes even 60% which is weird... I've tried multiple times to reset the battery stats (which doesn't do anything) or I've followed another guide that specifies to charge the battery completely, restart then pull out the battery once the Motorola logo shows up with the charging cable still plugged in. That worked before and the battery would return somewhat to normal, but now that doesn't work anymore.
So is there anything I can do to fix this? I'm using Kabladan's CyanogenMOD 7.2.4f (if anyone has other suggestions for a better ROM for this phone please do let me know =D )
I have the same problem with my stone, and I'm pretty sure it's the battery's fault and the phone and rom has nothing to do with it.
My guess is one or more cells are worned out in the battery so it doesn't store any capacity but it still reports full capacity to the phone.
It could be that it's the battery's fault, but in my case it's a bit the reverse of yours, a lot less battery is reported that it should.
Also, how is CM 9.1.0d working out for you? Does it have any improvements over 7.2.4f? =)
Too bad Kabladan abandoned all progress on his Milestone ROMs, they were quite useful for this deadbeat unsupported phone.
I'm satisfied with it.
I do the "heavier" tasks on my N7, so I use my MS mainly for internet thethering, calling, etc. After some days it gets a bit laggy (it can be within 3-4 days or 2-3 weeks, depending on usage), but after a restart it gets fast again, so it is not a big deal. I'm using CM9 because I use a few apps that requires at least ICS and basically it is more user-friendly than GB.
I recommend you to try it, test the different settings (zRam/swap,etc) and see if it suits your needs.
