Battery problem w/2.17 - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

I don't know if this has been discussed, but I am not getting the same battery performance (longevity) that i was getting prior to this upgrade.
I don't overclock. Is this specific to the rom???

Are you using Direct Push? That will kill your battery life.

no direct push
no i am not using direct push, but i am getting my mail every 5 minutes.
I'm surprised everyone else is fine

Contrary to what logic might infer, using DP as opposed to scheduled syncing has improved my battery life. I suspect it's because there is less data actually transfered on a regular basis by the DP heartbeat as opposed to scheduled syncing.

Push email vs every 30mins...

I have 2 account with Gmail and Comcast on my Tilt. I tried to use XpressMail but I was not impressed, plus I couldn't get more than 1 account to work with it as well.
This is mainly personal use at this point so I'm not in dire need of getting my emails immediately, but I do get them throughout the day so I don't want to wait too long either.
From a battery standpoint, which option is better in your opinion? If I have both accounts check every 30 mins, will that consume more battery as opposed to using a Push method for both?
And if Push still is the way to go, what's *the* best option for getting both accounts pushed to me? I only have my desktop at home for any necessary software.
Thanks!
You can't push any mail that's not on Exchange, so unless you sign up for a hosted mailbox, you're limited to the time based options.
Push will consume more battery due to the always open connection, but if you shut of HSDPA until you need it (grabbing attachments, surfing) it won't be significant.
I was able to get XPressMail to do it but it was inconsistent and a hassle. Is that the only non-Exchange option?

Wha tis seven? and how does it cmopare to mail2web (free version)
can it sync with PC outlook and does it run off your home computer?
It's a push implementation. It doesn't sync to any desktop software if that's what you're looking for.
I have just ordered Blackberry to go with my XDA Stellar, to push from my AOL and various other personal email accounts, as I've got used to the push functionality on my BB Pearl and the plan also comes with unlimited web browsing.
No one else on here seems to use Blackberry Connect on the Kaiser, so I'll do a bit of a review of it, once I've had it working a few days. My biggest concern is the battery life, and if it is awful I plan on doing without. The thing is though the Pearl has pretty powerful hardware underneath it and can last the best part of a week without charging, so I'm hoping the Blackberry Connect service will be prety frugal.

I quite disagree. The whole point of DirectPush is that it does NOT consume battery power unless it's actually transferring e-mail. The method MS came up with is actually QUITE clever - and is documented on their website in a number of places, so I won't try to repeat that here.
My own experience bears out that battery consumption is proportional to e-mail quantity. On slow days the battery drops hardly at all. When I'm getting hammered with e-mails, I can see the battery dropping noticeably quicker.

Battery life in HSDPA/UMTS

To those who are using the Diamond in Asia/Europe, how many hours are you getting on a battery WITH push enabled? That is the make or break for this phone...I still can't believe such a low battery was put on this phone, completely unacceptable, with such nice features power users will use it 24/7...

Battery Usage for Diamond
My diamond can only last for 4 hours using 3hk HSDPA.
the body of the mobile then becomes so hot.
the performance is something like my atom life using 3000mAh battery.
I think Its a better idea to stay in 2g if you use Direct Push and switch to 3g for browsing, etc..
Dani
I agree. I have 3G turned off most of the time, since I have push mail activated and the data connection is constantly open. Get more battery life that way. 3G is not required for email. Then I turn it on for web browsing, or when I'm downloading maps on the fly as I'm using GPS. This is on the Cruise but should be similar behavior on the Diamond.

[Q] Does this battery life look reasonable to you guys?

Running CM7 nightly build 7 here are some screenshots.
This is pretty typical of the use I've got under CM6, it's just the built in monitoring tools are better.
Well, what do you think?
That's looks good ... I've only owned my nexus for 4 hour hopefully mine is like that

.45% of battery per minute of voice calls.
So why is it showing that your phone is awake (guessing) 80% of the time? You might want to look at the Partial Wake Lock information to see what's keeping it awake.
Otherwise, 12 hours or so on a charge if you're using it for syncing email, im, and/or social media stuff and actually using the phone is pretty reasonable.
I get about 14 hours out of mine on a typical workday if I'm busy and don't play with it much. K9 Mail has idle IMAP going all day, syncing Google cal, 3g, two weather apps updating (Beautiful and Weather Bug, I like both ) etc.. If I use it NONE, like super busy at work, it'll go all day and I just charge it before bed time, so around 15-16 hours.
Using Enom, per my signature.
thats not too bad for medium usage. i get a lot of time under awake like your screenshots show, sometimes more. I tried to narrow down what was keeping it awake but cant figure it out. the highest thing listed under partial wake locks is typically android system. I am thinking it is either exchange or trillian, but i think last time i tested removing all of my accounts it didnt make a difference.
seems pretty good to me. one thing to look at is amount of time the screen was on, since that is always the biggest power draw. i usually make it 8 hours on a charge, with, say, 3.5 hours of screen on time. that's the most important thing to look at.

I have no idea why it's awake all the time. This is strictly Gmail sync and i guess facebook (I'm not a heavy user at all).
3G and beautiful weather are on, but BW only updates every 2 hours.
It's just a shame that the battery life is so much worse than my iPhone 4 (Doing the same things). Not trying to start problems, i'm obviously using this one
I'd love
to get 11 hours out of my battery

Battery drain overnight

So I've noticed that my battery seems to drop quite a bit 15% or more overnight. Not a huge deal but I'm just wondering if there is anything I can check or do. Figure it could help with overall battery life as well.

Known issue. Lots of X users have unusually high idle drain. Probably due to high android os usage. Search the battery threads and you will find some suggestions.

My trick is to disable motoconnect. It at least makes a huge difference on my phone.
I just realized that m wifi was out all night and the phone was on 4g, that usually will drain it a bit faster. I'll monitor it over the weekend.
I did freeze motoconnect as well thanks!
Not sure anyone has really pinpointed it. It does seem the Android OS process is higher on this phone then any other phone. But theres no particular wake locks or anything that tell us exactly why its draining so high. Alot of users say it depends on routers configurations. Alot of suggestions are to greenify some things like the google play store, google maps, etc. Also removing alot of undeeded apks. Ive done it all, freezing APKs, greenifying apps. On average my idle drain is 1.8%/hr. Ive had it as high as 2.5% and as low as .8%. Although ive made no connections as to how it got that low one night.

I'm in your boat. Searched everywhere. Nothing solves it. Some have reported returning the phone and the next one is better. Not sure if its myth or not. Considering exchanging phones tomorrow. As short as I can put it. Let me know if you find a solution.

Might be placebo, but i tried the unlinking the motorola account id last night like mentioned and i ran at 1.1%/hr in a ****ty 1-2 bar low strength area all night. So that either helped a good bit or was a quincidence. Will check the idle drain again tomorrow after overnight in a 3-4 bar area.
I had horrible idle drain (10-20% overnight) but once I rooted and froze/greenified everything I could, now I lose 2-3% overnight. Doesn't get much better than that.

I had an X when they first came out and also got horrible idle drain. I returned it before a root method was available.
Now I've got a T-Mobile version on the way and am going to test again with lots of stuff frozen. Unfortunately I can't greenify because I have to delete root after I finish setting up the phone because of my corporate email app.

what do you mean your corporate email app? there is a work around for corporate email security depending on what you meant by corporate email app.
I just checked my phone last night and got it to .8% per hour. No idea what is different between today and oh say 2 days ago when I lost 2.5% and hour. Going to check it again tonight but even .8% isn't that big of an accomplishment especially considering how much of this phone i have locked down.

Corporate email app is called good for enterprise. It has a root checker that disables the app if root is detected. Then you have to get your IT department to re enable your account.
0.8% is good in my opinion. But it's troubling that so many people seem to report 2.5% one night and then less than 1% the next night, with no change made to phone to account for the difference. Almost seems random and inexplicable, which makes it much harder to troubleshoot.

even harder to troubleshoot when some people say they returned their phone and got a new one and had everything installed the exact same and their battery drain was fixed... Very frustrating. I know a few culprits on my phone like qcom_rx_wakelock (but that changes to a different wake lock when Im not on wifi) and alarm manager ( some google service is calling on alarm manager like 3000 times a night), and my wifi seems to cause problems occasionally and power manager service is a b**** sometimes as well.

Battery drain - at&t note 9

Hi guys,
Have been using my new note 9 after replacing it with my s8+. So far it's a pretty good phone. One of the primary reasons for me to get was the large battery such that it will last m even more longer. But I have been noticing poor performance everyday. At the end of the day, I am bleeding to 10%. The s8+ was given to my wife and I compared her usage vs mine and for same amount of screen time I ended up at 30% and she was at 67%. I have less amount of apps installed than hers and she is heavy user of all social media apps. I have been observing my battery performance and what seems to be draining the most is the Android system, Google play services and Android OS. They claim all together half of my battery life. I noticed that there was an update right after I setup my note 9 initially and not sure if that could have caused it. Is there any way I can reverse it to see if it was the update? I have already tried wiping out the cache and shutting down all background activities on those items and blocked notification on pretty much most of the apps. How is everyone else's experience on the battery? I forgot to capture screen shot but will do it at the end of today.

I'm chiming in because I'm currently using the Note 9 ATT variant. My battery life has been pretty decent, but it's tough because the usage and even my "all day" and your "all day" can differ so much. Are you using 1080 resolution or did you set it to the higher resolution? I'm also running the ATT update you mentioned. But I'm also using wifi calling, not sure if that hurts or helps battery life, I haven't used it on my previous unlocked international HTC devices, so I'm just starting to experiment.
Have you enabled any of the battery optimization?
You can go to settings/device maintenance and click on battery on the bottom. I have it set to off in the "presets" but at the lower part of the page you can see "app power monitor" and see the app's power usage per hour. If you've got some that are higher, you can click on just those apps to check them on the list, and then click "save power" and see if your battery life gets better.
Possibly if you're using always on display you can modify that, if it's not something you really need and have already addressed.
Thanks for your reply. I am not running any battery optimization. I wanted to try default. Yes, I looked at battery usage per app and don't find anything bothering or consuming extra battery. Resolution is set to 1080 and always on display is off. Also. Wifi calling is on at all times. I am not sure if I am expecting too much but after using s8+ for over a year I was expecting much decent battery life with less than half of the apps installed on s8+ and having a bigger battery on this beast. I will need to find out how to lower down those Android system, os and Google play services.
My device is unlocked but on AT&T's network and I'm running my screen at max resolution and close to max brightness. My screen and AOD are always one and two with the O/S running a distant third or fourth sometimes fifth. If Google Play Services is consuming that much battery it is constantly running in the background trying to sync or pull data which it's not getting. Focus on that application and you should be fine, my phone is typically at greater than 50% at the end of the day and I use it all the time.

How do you find which app or service is running in background which is trying to pull or sync data?
Just a note, I had to drop t-mobile to make a point with them for screwing with my account. Houston has good coverage but the network is congested and that is an understatement. My battery life went down on my V20 and my note4 when on ATT's network. Not that the reception was always poor, because it is very poor at my house, but speeds and latency on ATTs LTE were like going back to HSPA. Sometimes it was better to turn off LTE and just put up with the super high latency to get decent speeds on ATT.

Go into settings/apps/Google Play Services/Battery and see what it's been doing. You can restrict the app as well from there I believe, also clear the cache. As I stated I would focus on that app specifically.
My experience was rough when I first got the phone as well. I factory restored with Odin and used ADB to remove all the apps I was not going to use. I then i stalled all my apps and the battery life took a hit again. I'd come home from a 9 hour day of work and be in the 40s. I downloaded betterbatterystats and let it monitor my phone overnight. I found that com.att.iqi was running all the time and constantly causing wake locks. I downloaded package disabler pro and disabled that package. Now when I leave work I am at 75% battery for the past two days. By bed time my phone has been off the charger for 18 hours with about 4 hours screen on time and I'm between 25%-35% which is outstanding. I made a thread with my complaint comparing the battery to my iPhone X and was called a troll because android can do no wrong. In short get betterbatterystats and package disabler pro.
Thanks for this, I was wondering if betterbatterystats would work on my Note 9, but hadn't researched it yet. It's a great app specifically for targeting issues like this, but I've always used it on rooted devices so I didn't recall if it worked on unrooted devices. I'm looking forward to trying it over the next few days and slimming this thing down.

One thing I'm wondering about is Bixby. My battery life seems to be pretty decent with ATT. I don't use Bixby, although I haven't disabled the app, I don't have it set up or signed in.

I actually managed to return mine and got another note 9 thinking that I would try it without doing the first update. Unfortunately that software update thing popped up while I was using the phone and I hit continue by mistake. I am kind of thinking about returning this one and getting the s9 plus if I still have this crappy battery life.

I'm not a battery life hawk, but, there's a few things you can do without crippling your phone (some already mentioned) before throwing in the towel.
1) Go to each app in SETTINGS > APPS > MOBILE DATA & turn off ALLOW BACKGROUND DATA USAGE on apps that have this option & where you're absolutely sure this will not impact something important to your usage.
2) Package Disabler Pro was already mentioned,it's well worth the price of admission. This is where you'll likely see the biggest improvement, surely no one here uses every single feature/app on any phone, force stop & disable what you're not using.
3) Again,I'm not a battery stat ninja,I just use my phone as I see fit, but, others have suggested try using FHD instead of WQHD for screen resolution. I myself use WQHD,but,I'm content with my battery life, however,I'd give it a try if I felt the need.
4) If you have NFC on,turn it off until you need to use it,access to it is quick & easy. I myself do not use NFC,but, even if I did,I can't imagine I'd use it to the point to where I'd leave it on 24/7 for convenience of use.
What's important to your usage is in the eye of the beholder,so,that's the extent of my recommendations for battery recommendations. The few I've mentioned should net some improvement without negatively affecting your routine usage.

I'm trying to ascertain which one to use. Apparently this app shows all wakelocks whereas better battery stats only shows partial wakelocks, from the small amount of research that I've done.
The dev apparently doesn't respond and has abandoned the app, again from research I've done

I am trying a rundown tomorrow with power save. Just CPU and screen brightness. I left resolution and network usage on. I don't think brightness does much. It is supposed to be -10% but I have trained my auto brightness some and I have been having to turn it up. So I think only speed limiter CPU 70% is at play.
