I just upgraded to the beta T-Mobile 2.24 ROM. I upgraded from the custom 2.17 by xelencin. I avoided the tmo customizations from installing but have a couple of questions. Is there a way to extract the custom cabs from xelencin's ROM (i.e. the Tmo Network Customizations) that get installed in the Extended ROM or is this something I would have had to do prior to upgrading. If not, is there at least a place I can locate the Certification_Disable.cab separately?
I have a feeling that the answer is that I would have needed to somehow extract them from my MDA in the Extended ROM prior to the upgrade. If so, I am not opposed to going back to the 2.17 or even his new 2.21 ROM but can someone point me on how I can access the Extended ROM to get the cabs if I install his custom ROM?

The quickest way for you to get at the cabs would be to install Total Commander (free file manager..search for it via Goooooogle) on your device. Then type "\Extended_Rom" in the path bar at the top. Don't do anything with the files you see there other than copy them to a folder somewhere else on your device. If you try to delete or otherwise modify them you will corrupt you extended ROM (not a big deal, but you'll have to soft reset to fix). Once the files are copied elsewhere you can have your way with 'em.
Something I've never understood is installing a ROM clean without the Ext_ROM cabs....from reading through the posts, it looks like the cabs can be installed later, but will those cabs go into program memory instead of the locked/hidden extended ROM? Wouldn't I be better off letting the Ext_ROM do its thing so I don't waste precious program memory?
Is there any way to uninstall a cab from teh Ext_ROM without a hard-reset? I know deleting files out of the Ext_ROM corrupts it, but these progs don't show up under "Remove Programs", so I'm thinking I'm stuck with them. Guess what I need to do is create my own Ext_ROM without the cabs I don't want?
I think I hit my question limit for one post, so I'll end it now...

There's a bit of a misconception regarding extended ROM. Most of the cab files there only set registry and provisioning settings. Very few actually install anything to the device. Extended ROM is about 10 megs in size. Whether it's full or not has no impact on your useabable space.
Unlock Extended ROM
But what should I do when I need add new programs to extended rom. My Extended ROM is write protected

You should do a search on Wizard extended ROM unlocking. Here and over at buzzdev.

I would also be very interested in this. I have a Wizard that has the T-Mobile 2.26 ExtROM, which, needless to say, does not have this file. I don't really want to reflash the ExtROM just for this file. Could someone post it or point me to a place that has it?
Thanks!

best way to add files to the ext rom without corrupting your ext rom is this..
Make your own with the files you want, then flash that ext rom... To learn how to do this you better start reading the millions of threads on here
Found what I wanted...
Well, I seem to have solved my own problem. The Certification_Disable.cab file seems to be the same exact thing as Cert_SPCS.cab, which I found through Google. Even if the files are not exactly the same, Cert_SPCS.cab has the desired effect: it removes the prompting when installing unsigned applications.
Since I bet other people need this file too, I am attaching it here (remove the .zip). I am not positive about the origin of this file, but it sounds like it was included in the ExtROM of the Sprint PPC6700 (Apache).

I'm just starting to get into the depths of my PDA2K and this site is GREAT!!!!!!! Since I'm just one step up from "The Village Idiot", I have a couple questions for all you pros.
After reading about using the extended ROM, and unlocking it and seeing what's in there, I think I've figured it out. Whatever CABs are listed in the config file will be installed upon a hard reset....correct? If true, and since I have only 3.5MB left in Ex ROM, can I put the other CABs I wanted installed in say /storage/CABs, list them in the config file and upon a hard reset they will be installed? Is there any reason to put them into Extended ROM rather than Storage? Is it alright to put CABs in from like games, Resco Explorer, WebIS Mail, etc.? Lastly is there a way to set the programs up where I don't have to go back and enter all the registration numbers again?
Thanks a ton for your help!!!
Tom

is it possible then to keep the installation cabs on storage card,
and also, can that path be set in the config file in ext rom?
what happens if a particular cab is not found after hard reset?
is the installation stuck or it just gives a warning and keeps on going to the next cab listed in the list.
Have a read of this
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=83119#83119
It might be a bit to deep but should help you along the way.
1) You can keep a cab anywere you want
2) make sure your cab is read only as it can delete itsself after install.
3) to run a auto install from a differnet storage place you need to hack the reg (see thread).
In all if you have a sd card you could leave your EXt rom empty.
Hack the reg to the new postion and run the Autorun from there.
Have fun
Thanks for all the infor everyone! From what I've read in other threads I need to make sure that TPdisabled is set to off so that when programs like WebIS Mail and SplashID get installed I can touch the screen to make sure they install into the right place and other things. Correct? If this is correct, should I just remove TPdisabled all together?
Thanks again,
Tom
TPdisabled can't be set off, its either run or not run. So dump it and you wont have a problem
MDAIIIUser - Thanks for the link! I looked at it and you're right, it's pretty indepth and I'll have to read it more closely at a later time....like at work.
Question1: leochan2005 had a follow-up saying "why not use backup"? While I agree this would be easier, I'm assuming that by using your method one would get a much "cleaner" install than backing up all the crap that was on the system prior to the hard reset...correct?
Question2: It took me a long time to get my TMo settings setup on my PDA2K and I don't want to go thru that again. Is there a way to backup those settings so that they can be auto-configured at a later time? I read about making a personalsettings.CAB but haven't done it yet.
Thanks,
Tom

Thanks! I take it it should be at the beginning of the config file so that I can access it. Correct?
q1)
Well the short of "why not use backup" is you can if you feel that:
1) Restoring Regedit values from a lower rom version
2) Restoring system applications form a lower rom version such as BT
are called for, wanted or even needed.
I fail to see that point as a upgrade is an upgrade and a backup is a backup. Now you could do a restore of your system data also (which you could also sync and that would be clean
Q2)
Most fo those settings are part of T-mobile.cabs found in Extrom, the rest would have been reg entries that you are going to have to hunt for and copy.
So sorry no way around reading the other thread (personalsettings.CAB)
MDAIIIUser - Maybe I should state what I'm trying to accomplish and you could give me a clue as to how to do it. A couple days ago I upgraded by BT on my PDA2K (generic from Expansys) to 1.0.0.3900 (or what ever the latest is) and I'm currently looking at upgrading my radio to 1.12, but that would require a hard reset. I'm not in the mood to go thru all the program installs and SMS/MMS tweaking again, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to get all my programs and configurations back after the hard reset. I thought by incorporating the personalsettings.cab (for my Tmo settings) and your method I would be up and running pretty quickly. Yes? I have Sprite Backup, but I'm not sure if that's going to overwrite anything after the radio upgrade????
Thoughts?
Thanks!
Well my logic (that could be wrong) would say that a restore of your backup would get you to were you are now.
That you would need a restore as you have to do a hard reset after the 1.12 radion install.
But I can't answer the question will the radio be restored as well,
I don't know, I don't know the settings in the backup application, so am sorry I will have to let somebody else answer this one.
It's too good to believe:

39.6MB (their server is really slow today)
From i-mate site:
The details of the new ROM image are:
For the Worldwide English Build:
ROM version: 1.40.00 WWE
ROM date: 03/10/05
Radio version: 1.12.00
Protocol version 1337.42
ExtROM version: 1.40.176 WWE
I think they waited until the pros on this site figured everything out first...then they just piggy-backed on their findings. Kudos to the real pros on XDA-devel!!!

How to install this rom in Spanish Qtek 9090, i'm new and y don't now very well to change the language.
Thank you!
imate update
I just got the update from the I-mate site and am working it with the XDA tools but I'm getting a checksum errors on the radio, NK, and MS filles. Should I be using a different tool? My device is a MDA III T-mobile german flashed to english. Any Ideas???
Downloaded, installed and running. No problems....yet. I can't find a config file in the extrom in order to make some changes, but there's a setup.exe file now. Not sure what that's about.
No idea how to change the language...I'm not good enough to know that.
More later.
Tom
So far so good. A couple issues. 1) the phone off (or flight mode on) is no longer activated by the Call End button. Shame...I loved that feature. 2) I have a problem turning the phone on (flight mode off) after a soft reset. I think it may be caused by the Contacts Button addin. The only way I can turn on the phone is to go into the keypad and then turn it on. All other methods cause the system to lockup.
Tom
Temporary copy...

Great!!!!!
I'm downloading it right now!!
i-mate finally released it after 1000's of unkept promises!
FINALLY!!! Here's to hoping it will be better than the Qtek version!
Again, I would like to ask why there is no config file??? I take it setup.exe has the config file built in? If any of the pros can give me some feedback as to this, I would appreciate it. I'd like to drop in several cab files incase I fubar something down the road.
Thanks,
Tom

Ture...true. Skype was fun the first couple times, but with VOIP at home, I really don't need it anymore. Still, kind of cool to show people...if you have someone that you can connect to.
Tom
Tried some combos, including, using the old config and setup files... nothing wrorks,
only thing is that any additional file found in ext rom is treated as a carrier customization file, and on selecting one file , that particular file will be installed..
also, i noticed that there is one config file in the windows directory.
Just take the Autorun.exe and config.txt from another rom, add in the cabs from the i-mate rom, and there you go.
Yeah, I will be removing Skype ASAP myself. I can understand how it could be useful, but for my purposes, it just takes up space.
The Setup.exe is way better then the config
Leave the setup the exe it is better then the config. with the config you have to site the and write a line for each cab file. the setup.exe automatically runs every cab file in the ext rom. whether you put it there or not. So when cookinh your extended rom no need to keep having to change the config.txt. The setup will run whatevers there.
You can find this new ROM at ftp upload folder hope MDAIIIUser can move to wiki , I will upload ext.ROM by tomorrow

Do I need to keep autorun.exe ? If yes, then which one old or new?
sunish, I can not imagine why it would not work. You must have made a mistake somewhere.
The WMP10 close problem still exists, which leads me to conclude that it is indeed a problem with the 1.40 CE Rom, and not something within the Extended rom muddling it up.
Has anyone seem any actual improvements with this rom over Qtek's? All of the same problems still to be in place. The extended rom has a few different (but unimportant) cabs, but that's about it.
MarcValme, I'm not so sure I agree. One of the good things about the config.txt file is that you can specify the order in which the cabs install, which does actually make a difference in a few circumstances. Food for thought.
TheLastOne,
Don't know / Can't figure out where is the problem.
No combination is working for me.
Maybe will try it again after a day or so.
Right now, after unhiding the Ext ROM, I'm installing all the programs needed by me manually.
One thing that I noticed is the increase in speed... The performance is somewhat better now...
I've uploaded a 2.17 ROM that has .NET Compact Framework 2 integrated. The files for CF2 are in the ROM, and the necessary registry entries are created via a cab file that is part of the extended ROM. If you bypass execution of the ext ROM customizations, you won't have the necessary registry keys for CF2 to function.
I should probably repeat that: If you bypass execution of the ext ROM customizations, you won't have the necessary registry keys for CF2 to function. (nor will you have the Cingular customizations including GPRS and MMS settings).
The ROM is based on the 2.17 version that has lots 'o extra ringers and themes, and OmapClock. Makes tatertots too.
If you don't know what CF2 is and have never installed software that requires it (not much does..the most popular is probably WiFiFoFum) then there's no need to flash to this ROM. However if you do use applications that require CF2, you'll benefit from the storage space savings by having CF2 in ROM.
For first-time upgraders from stock devices, I beg of you, please, no matter what you read about successful flashes without CID unlocking, do yourself (and my inbox) a favor and CID unlock anyway. =)
The ROM is available here:
ftp://xda:[email protected]_RUU_WIZARD_217_AKU2_WWE_RNGRS_OCLOCK_CF2.exe
I may create one based on 2.08 at some point down the road.
Thanks, and enjoy. and whatnot. and what have you. and stuff.
EDIT: fixed link since it's been moved. Not sure why it was put in a Cingular subdir of the main Cingular dir..

how to rerun customizations
is it possible to run the customization routines later (after the first reboot from RMO upgrade)? I wonder if this would work (to preserve prior settings/applications):
Backup using SPB
Install new 2.17 rom on top of old 2.17 rom
cancel customizations
install backup file (which will overwrite registry)
run new customization to add CF2 to registry
Or, can you upload the CAB with the CF2 reg entries so it can be run again later?
thanks,

Summiter, I tried the 2.17 ROM with Cingular customizations, ringers, themes, and OmapClock last night. (I unlocked CID, and SIM as well just in case.) It worked great. Nice job and many thanks!

That's what happened - you wrote over your registry with the one that no longer has the CF2 keys. When I get home in a couple hours I'll attach the cab file to my reply that will recreate them.

When you click one of the links, it will set the clock to that speed until you suspend the device by pressing the power button briefly or it times out.
What I've done is map my camera button to the 252 link, so when I need an extra boost I just hit the button. It will stay overclocked until I suspend the device.
If you want it overclocked always and forever, you'll have to call OmapClock with a notification event which requires a 3rd party app to set up. Read through the OmapClock threads to find out more.
I like the having it rest to stock speed on suspend since it conserves battery by only being overclocked when needed.

Yep - the customizations run after you get past the alignment stuff. It's the part where you are locked out of your device while a perdy progress bar takes its sweet ass time as it installs countless cab files.
If you were so inclined, you can bypass customization by pressing the soft reset button as soon as the poorly worded notification pops up saying "It will now customize....". I don't recommend that.
WiFiFoFum working?
Has anyone successfully run WiFiFoFum with this ROM? I had a seemingly successful flash (I had the long wait for installation after the alignment on the first boot). Everything seems to work except WiFiFoFum. I haven't tried anything else that requires CF2 yet, but WiFiFoFum gives me an error:

This application (WiFiFoFum.exe) requires a newer version of the Microsoft .NET Compact Framework than the version installed on this device.
When I click "Details" I get:
Code:
WiFiFoFum.exe
InvalidProgramException
I even installed the cab file provided above to make sure the registry was right.
Essentially I'd like to know if this is known to work okay so I'll know that I should try flashing it again.

Appears as though the flash didn't take. If you execute cgacutil.exe in the Windows directory, what CF versions are reported?
What ROM did you have prior to this one?
I've been debating trying my hand at cooking up my own ROM sometime here soon since I've not been entirely happy with the precooked ones. You know what they say, if you want something done right you just gotta do it yourself. ;-)
Anyways, I was thinking that I would probably like to install more software than I can put in just the ROM itself. I know I can do this through the extended ROM but I don't have the first clue where to begin and there doesn't seem to be any sort of tutorials floating around on the subject (or, indeed, of cooking in general). So how DO you create an extended ROM and add programs through it?

There's a great kitchen that i got from the forum. I can't upload it right now, but hopefully someone has some bandwidth to get a link. Search for Wizard extended rom kitchen. I believe Faria put it together. Check out the .pdf it contains for instructions.
Basically, you'll use a tool called Winimage to "inject" files into a file called ext-rom-base.nb. In the image is a text file that tells the installer what to run.
Each file must be selected as "read only" after injecting, or it won't work.
Injecting is basically dragging and dropping cabs or exe's into the file, nothing fancy. Note that each file type is called differently, so watch out for that one.
Also - the cabs cannot require operator intervention - or the installer will hang. Make sure they run and tell you that they're done.
Then when you run nb2nbf_wizard, you can check Ext_rom, browse to the file ext-rom-base.nb, image name is Extension_ROM, and address is 9B000000.
You can create the nb.nbk to include just the extended rom, just the OS, just the Splash screens, or any combination you want.
A bit intimidating at first - but actually very easy. I never messed up my phone once working with the extended rom on the Wizard. I broke my Hermes twice already, and still can't figure it out

Enjoy.
Post also moved to wizard upgrading.
hi guys,
I had problem when cooking ext rom. I got ''htc-wizard-ext-rom-maker-kit" by faria from ftp. I did exactly all the steps in faria pdf guide, but after hard reset it didn't work. I don't know why? Anyone help me pls.
My device:
IPL/ISL: 3.08
Radio: 2.19.11
ROM: TNT 3 Pro
I hate to be another of these "I've searched and can't find an answer to this question" guys, but.....
I've read, re-read, digested etc....and successfully flashed various OS ROMS, Radio ROMS, several times on 2 different phones...and, for the life of me I can't get my head around this extended ROM thing.
Let's state what I "think" I know:
1) The extended ROM is an area of ROM on the phone that is not "normally" visible, accessible etc. by, e.g. file explorer, right?
2) The purpose of the extended ROM is to contain the files necessary for cold starting the phone - ie. all the cab files etc. AND all the carrier-specific info - e.g. MMS settings, server addresses etc., right?
3) It is possible with certain hacks to make this area of ROM browsable - but, not totally sure why you would want to do that.
4) Some ROM updates from the highly knowledgable people on this site have no content in the extended ROM area, meaning that it will not overwite anything already in this area. This means, for example that it would be possible to have the registry settings in a new ROM to "call" the customization settings already in extended ROM to customize the phone for, say, AT&T, right?
5) And finally....I believe it is possible to "pre-load" the extended ROM with, say, customization files, and then load an OS update ROM which will then call the customization cabs in the same way as a genuine ROM from a carrier does, yes?
Sorry for the long list of questions and, if there IS an FAQ on this that I have missed, doubly sorry. Aside from simply understanding the above, my purpose today is to load the Jaguar II ROM, which I believe doesn't have an extended rom area along with the AT&T customizations as a base to work from.
By all means tell me if I am talking out of my proverbial with any of the above!

1. Right, however in Wizard it is presented by a hidden folder (You can use Total Commander and navigate to \Extended_ROM to view its contents)
2. Yes, however htc also put some programs such as Voice Commander install cab there
3. It is browseable using other file managers (But NOT changeable if not CID unlocked, or the Extended ROM portion will be damaged and you can see no files there)
4. Partly. Actually the ROM file for flashing is a container that can include IPL, SPL, Radio, OS and Extended ROM, however not all ROMs must exist in the flashing file (nk.nbf). Most custom ROMs does not have the Extended ROM file (Instead many of them only have OS ROM).
It is possible to call the Extended ROM for installation, however due to possible software incompatibilities, ROM cook removes that settings.
Instead, you can visit the Extended ROM and run the customization cab yourself (or even copy the cab to other situation to prevent the Extended ROM from accidentally damaged)
5. Yes, it is possible to customized the Extended ROM and rebuild the nk.nbf with your Extended ROM, however it is only applicable to unlocked G3 devices.
For me, I copied the customization cabs to SD, then run it myself on each hard reset because I don't want to install the bundled Voice Commander and other craps.
