Band Select on WM5? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

Maybe I've missed this somewhere (I have looked!) but is there a band select feature (to force the phone to use a specific cell frequency - say 1900mhz) in WM5 the way there is in WM3SE?
I want to upgrade to WM5 now that there are more stable options, but I need this feature and wanted to make sure it's still there.
Thanks!

Hmm I don't think it is possible... why do you want to do this anyway? I think it is automatic.

Damn.
The reason is that my house seems to be right in the middle of a point where leaving it on automatic frequently switches it between 850 an 1900 mhz cingular networks. If I force it to 1900 mhz it's rock solid with good reception everywhere in my house. If I let the phone make the decision I vary between good and awful with pretty frequent dropped calls.
I guess I'll stick with WM3SE

On my qtec9090 i don't see less options in the phone settings than i had on wm20003 (using TuMa 1.3 now).
There's the usual network tab on phone settings where you manually can choose your netwerkprovider.
I don't know if it helps, otherwise please tell me where you configure the Band Select, so I can look for something simular.

I have the Diamond w/AT&T

Unfortunately bad news everyone. For some ungodly reason the Diamond is only showing G! Not even Edge! From what HTC is telling me they are only supporting 3G on the 2xxx Mhz band? That makes no sense whatsoever! I am willing to try things if anyone has a suggestion but so far not good! Which is weird because I previously reviewed the original Triband TYTN and that at least did get 3G on and off but always had Edge.
http://mobilitytoday.com/articles/htc_diamond_first_look.html
I don't know why you're not getting edge, thats a an extension of GPRS which works over GSM.
As for 3G/UMTS, it never said it suported anything but 900/2100. There's nothing you can do, HTC already said that there wasnt enough space in the phone for the extra antenna's required to support more frequencies.
isnt edge on 1900 ?
yup it is! I would be willing to look into the registry to see if there is a tweak? Any of you have an idea?
no idea my guess would be try forcing 1900 ?
beyond that i wouldnt know
try different area ?
Edge in the US in most areas is 850Mhz, which is the reason I held off on my purchase of the Diamond.
hmmm
interesting but i had bought a original touch in india and that works in most places that i go in the states and i recieve edge

thats the answer ,,, non us versions of diamond don't operate on 850mhz
so dave did u get an hsdpa signal?
and im sorry u in jersey or nyc?
i forgot
sorry but is there a reg edit where he could force the device to look for 850?
just to see if its hidden..then we can find out if they really left out the radio or not...i really wanted to pick one up ...but if it doesnt have 850 its a no go for me...bummer
No HSDPA signal.. All GPRS!!! 7 hours!!! Call quality completely sucks too..

that blows sorry dave ....so how r u liking the ui any lag?
BTW dave if anyone has that rom of the diamond that was sent out to reviewers (that had the att bands) would be nice
Mine does show the 850Mhz band but thats not the problem the problem is that this phone ONLY supports 3G at the 900 and 2100mhz band.
The UI is very laggy so far. I am going to use it via Wifi and see if that improves the UI. BUT another weird thing is that I just popped my Tmobile sim in and now get Edge?

Tmobile is 1900 only so their EDGE has to be on 1900.

For those who are interested I just posted my first day video feel free in checking it out..
At the begining of your video you say that while a GPRS connection is up your calls go to voicemail? Thats not normal behaviour:
Class A devices, which some new devices are, can make/receive calls without dropping the GPRS connection. Just to be clear, data can still be sent/received over GPRS while you're talkiing.
Class B devices, which all other devices are (except the first few GPRS devices made), can handle GSM and GPRS at the same time, but will drop the GPRS connection while a call comes in, or you make a call. They then resume the GPRS connection after the GSM channel is not in use.
Class C devices, can only handle GSM or GPRS one at a time, and you have to manually switch which mode you want. Only the first few devices ever made or Modem terminals are Class C.
Are you absolutly sure about that behaviour because its not a defined class for GPRS.
PS. best quality video so far. With that great lighting you can see exactly how the 'diamond' is on the back. I think the fact its brand new and super clean also helps
Also it seems significantly faster than the coolsmartphone review.. I guess the extra RAM makes a huge difference.
Has a date been tossed around yet for a possible US friendly version launch? Or is this just another one of those cool phones we won't get to use over here?
I am in the USA .. no phone with only GPRS or Edge can take a phone call while in a data connection.. Only 3G can do this in the USA..
Thank you very much for your kind comments about my video.. We try very hard to deliver a good review. I will continue posting more videos as I continue to use the Diamond.. So far for me this phone in the USA is a dudd..

HSDPA over regular 3G

So I have, after reading many sets of instructions on this site decided not to attempt changing the rom on my TyTAN II. Is there any software available that I can use with my current phone configuration that will allow me to take advantage of the HSDPA network?
Download either Pocket Toolman 2 ......or....... Kaiser Tweak. With either of these programs you can enable the use of HSDPA.
I'm pretty sure that "enabling" HDPA is just basically enabling the icon.. Please, do speed tests tethered via USB before and after and report your results.
Testing the speed in-phone or tethered bluetooth won't give appropriate results.
Speed test
HSDPA speed in-phone is about 800 Kbits\sec
HSDPA speed Tethered is about 1800 Kbits\sec

3G is only capable of 384kbps, HSDPA on the Kaiser gives the lowest specified HSDPA speed at 1.8Mbps. Still very significant difference.

If I could get ICS to work anymore, I'd try it.. Maybe I'll try it again today. If I can get it to work, I'll toggle the setting in Schnaps and measure.
I just wish I could figure out why my fuze quit displaying the H icon, even though it is enabled in the registry, and double checked by the advanced config program.
Thanks
Hey guys thanks a ton. Kaiser Tweak is one of the best apps I have seen and sure enough among other things HSDPA is now enabled and my connection is way faster now.
not that bad
You know, you really should give flashing a try. Not too long ago I was just like you, unwilling to flash a very expensive piece of equipment. I went so far as to purchase a used 8525 and used it as my guinea pig. Needless to say, once i saw how simple it was, i had no reservations doing it on my tilt. Additionally, there are a few sites on these forums that will instruct you how to return your phones rom and SPL back to manufacturer's specs for warranty trade-in/repair. Give it a shot, it may look daunting when read, but is truely quite simple. And people here are always willing to help, even if you duplicate a thread!

3G --> H Data problems

Hello I seem to have a problem and I am hoping someone can help. My phone is rooted running Modaco r20 Desire Rom. Radio is ERE27. I have a strong 3G signal in my town with T-mobile. My problem is that for some reason whenever I use data (internet, online gaming, searching using apps etc) the icon will stay on 3G then switch over to H. Sometimes it will stay on 3G and it will not allow any data. I know about the EDGE to 3G issues. I don't seen to have that issue. Can anyone help and or know why this happens?
Usually, when browsing the internet or anything is being downloaded at all - the 3G icon will switch to H. Really only in custom ROMs though, I don't really believe this happens in the stock ROM.. it's not a bad thing or a problem, at least not for me.
Data doesn't completely shut off for me though.
The "H" means you are achieving an HSDPA connnection of sorts. Stock does not have this icon in it, since HSDPA is a form of 3G and they didn't want people getting confused by it switching from 3G icon to H icon.
HSDPA is faster than basic UMTS, aka "3G"... so it is not a bad thing at all.
No idea why you loose your data connection all together when it switches, since it isn't doing anything other than recognizing you have a faster data connection than basic 3G, nothing is actually changing to cause you to lose your connection since it is still the same connection.

no it is not...
mine does the same thing... i have to twiddle my thumbs and wait when it switches between UMTS and HSDPA... they are different frequencies just like EDGE is on a different frequency...
I don't think UMTS and HSPA are on different frequencies, the same two frequencies are used (alternating for downlink/uplink) for both, those are 1700mhz and 2100mhz.
For some reason I don't have this problem on Long Island, but when I'm in the city this happens the whole time. Might be something to do with the way the network is configured. Basically whenever data is in use, it just says 3G, but as soon as I browse to a site or actually use data, it switches to H within a second or so. I think a stock ROM would technically be doing the same thing, but it just won't show the actual switch, as it doesn't differentiate between HSPA and UMTS in the top 'taskbar.' Although it would probably show this in the phone status screen under settings.

The "3G" to "H" (and back) is a "red herring". If it's "stuck" on 3G when you're trying to do data, it means your handset is having issues communicating in the AWS bands for 3G (2100/1700) and the handset hasn't dropped back to GSM/GPRS/EDGE (1900) yet or is attempting to switch frequencies and the associated towers aren't cooperating with the hand-off or the hand-off is failing.
Cheers,
Kermee

I'm in times square. My phone has never switch to UMTS. Either HSPA or EDGE.
also while it's idle it will only use 3G
it will switch to H to transfer data, then revert to 3G

Which Modaco ROM? If it is Desire, you have to flash the newest radio, and do it after flashing the ROM itself, otherwise you will have major Radio issues... at least that is my, and a fair number of other's, experience.

Yeah its Desire rom. I have radio ERE27 right now
Try upgrading to the newest one, 32.26.00.24U_4.04.00.03_2:
http://android.modaco.com/content/g...-online-kitchen-optional-root-insecure-himem/
Make sure you have at least 50% battery before flashing, just download and flash via recovery just like a ROM, do not panic, ever, during the process and do a battery pull, just wait for it to flash, then ask you to reboot, reboot, it will then do the actual radio flashing (you will see a box with arrow screen for a couple minutes) it will reboot on its own into recovery, say "writting" cache with a progress bar for a few seconds. The bar will go away, but the "writting cache" text will not, don't worry it is done, just reboot and then double check it flashed by going to about phone, software, and checking baseband version.
Just remember, can't stress this enough, do not pull your battery at all during this process. And make sure you have at least 50% battery before starting. Flashing a radio is the only way you can brick an N1 right now, and only if you pull the battery during the process, or have a bad download. Speaking of which, I do recommend checking the MD5 sum to make sure it is a good clean download.

I'll have full bars for 3G and when I goto check the market or anything internet related, the 3G will switch to H and work or stay at 3G and pause with connection error, retry or cancel.
I started having this issue after updating my factory stock radio. Anybody know which one is the stock/default radio IMG is? I'm thinking of downgrading and seeing what happens.

radio is 4.48.25.20
same as when i got the phone like i sed new guy
i think hes using a stock rom pure like me .We dont have that option with out a reg edit
try this
get a reg editor like PHM regeditor google can help ya find it .
Go to following registry key [HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\PhoneSetting] and change "ShowUMTSBandPage" to 1 will enable band selection page in phone settings. You will supprised to find UMTS 2100 and 800 as viable selection there. However, we need someone verify it when they travel to foreign countries. To see the new band selection UI, go to start->settings->personal->phone and you will see a new tab labeled 'band'
go to the new tab and set network type to UTMS

It will still show wcdma on the band tab. Since it is not connected to anything at that time there must be something in software overriding the band tab, maybe in the registry. Someone please help me drill this down. xhozt, where is the option for 850 only? I haven't been able to find that.

[Q] GS4A on T-Mobile - what are the best settings?

Ok, I've done some research here and at a few other forums and I can't seem to nail down a proper answer or methodology or precisely what I'm looking for so here goes:
I have a GS4A, it's unlocked with an AT&T supplied unlock code, it has been edited to allow for the T-Mobile AWS support (and I can choose the 1700 MHz bands easily if so desired as well as the 1900, etc, basically anything since it's now "wide open"). I am wondering what's the best choice for use with T-Mobile with respect to the WCDMA/CDMA/GSM/LTE potential?
For the record, the best speeds that I've achieved so far are about 13.5 Mbps down and 12 Mbps up, using the "WCDMA Preferred" setting in the *#*#4636#*#* menu but even that is somewhat unreliable - and yes I realize that the very nature of using wireless devices means you could do 100 tests in a row and get anywhere from terrible results to fantastic ones and then back to crap in the same test.
So while I can (and have) chosen all the apparent modes, I'm just curious to know what anyone might suggest or share their experience with the GS4A on T-Mobile, especially with the newer AWS enabled cities/locations. My current setting is again "WDCMA Preferred" and it'll show as HSPA:11 (if I muck with the LTE stuff it'll show LTE:14) and so far it's been working fine, or as fine as I think fine is I suppose.
Thanks...

Try this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2373003
I've got my service mode (*#2263#) set to automatic, works pretty well. I live north of KC and get T-Mobile LTE pretty often.
Funny how I get an answer when I was thinking about posting another question related to this very topic, odd.
Anyway, yeah, I've been playing with this GS4A for a few days and trying out not only different modes (WCDMA Preferred seems to be the best so far here in downtown Las Vegas and around the area, LTE/GSM is somewhat fast but very sporadic with the data transfers, and GSM just drops it to 2G/EDGE mode immediately).
The next question I was about to ask would be: does anyone have any info about the different HSPA modes? With the phone set to WCDMA Preferred it shows HSPA:11 and I'm wondering if it's possible to force a specific HSPA mode so I can throttle it down to a lower speed - I don't want to start a long thread about the how's and why's of my choice, suffice to say I believe that a solid lower speed connection of a few megabits per second is highly preferable to having that sporadic crap that spikes all over the place from absolutely nothing to 28Mbps and then back to zero again a second later, if that makes any sense.
I did some searching online for a chart of list of the HSPA modes but I swear I can't find anything that provides useful info at all, sadly.
Guess my Google-Fu just ain't what it used to be, so I figured I'd just ask here where people are far more knowledgeable than I about such things.
Thanks...
