Very Bad phone reception…Help… - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

Hi,
I have a question about the phone reception, I have upgraded my radio to the latest 1.15 and I was hoping to help get a better signal but no luck, any suggestions…My phone gets about %50 of my phone calls and drops the rest.
Note:
I have a Siemens SX66 with Tuma 1.4, and it has been doing the same since the old ROM.

Try radio 1.12 or 1.13. Radio 1.15 does not work well with WM5

mine did exactly the same, i downgraded to 1.13 and its perfect now

Thanks…I am going to try this today,
Just one dump question, where can I download the 1.13 radio ?

here and here

I did the downgrade to 1.13 and no luck yet,
How could I test my radio to see if my problem is software or hardware?
Any other suggestion?
HEELPP…

if your sm card works just fine on another phone, then problem is in hardware, maybe antenna, you shoud take youur device to service center

guess it could be possible that the spring terminals in the antenna or contacts on the mobo are a little corroded causing a bad connections.. T6 torx and a small phillips screwdriver and you can check this yourself.. just remove the back cover and you will see the GSM radio antenna at the top.. black plastic piece with a green masked copper foil over it.. remove it, clean both sets of contacts and re-assemble.. might do the trick

Will try today,
Thank you very much...

No, No luck
HELP...!!!

I did downgraded to TuMa 1.3 and Radio 1.13 and I am still having the same problem...also the service center is saying that they wont service my phone since I opened it and tried to do it my self...(I removed the warranty void sticker)...
I am sure now that is a hardware issue but what can I do to fix that...any shortcuts...

since these phones are aged I'd just assumed that no warranty work could be performed anyway.. besides they would most likely want to replace the mobo which would cost at least $200 or more.. I would buy a working cracked screen sx66 off ebay for cheap and swap main boards.. will leave you with a few extra replacement parts too if you ever needed them.. I don't have have any one hand or I'd make you a deal although I do have some camera modules..

Thanks for the quick reply...
I guess that I might have to take your offer and find a replacement MB...
Thanks again.

I too have trouble with the phone stack on my phone (1.13 on Artz rom). About 50% of calls get thru and I'm lucky if I can get 30 seconds of call time. I'm just texting till Tuma 1.5 comes out and I'll deal with it then. But be aware, this may not be a hardware issue.
Before spending money on a new MB, I'd try another ROM or even try WM2003 and see if the problem is still there.

couple things before you do start any hardware swapping.. do try either 1.42 2003se rom or another 05 flash to make sure it isn't a rom problem.. second is it bad reception everywhere or maybe just in one area where they may have taken a cell tower offline for repair.. just thoughts

Here is what I had, I had 1.40.00 then I went to 1.42.00 then to Tuma 1.3 Radio 1.13, Tuma 1.4 Radio 1.15 and finally I went back to Tuma 1.3 With Radio 1.13 (they say it is one of the best) and I am still having the same problem.
I have another question, would it be possible to install an antenna or a signal booster inside my SX66?

no.. but you can buy an adapter to plug into the antenna port on the back of the unit and connect an external GSM antenna.. this would bypas the internal antenna altogether and let you know if there is a problem with the radio.. do you have a working phone to compare reception with in the same location?
http://www.wpsantennas.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=405

what is the difference between radio 1.12 and 1.13? Is one better than the other or are they equal? If you still have issues with wifi and signal with 1.13 and wm5 can going to 1.12 help?
Also does it matter if i use a type I or type II radio? (the editfix is the easiest method for my sx66)

Yes, my SIM card works fine if inseted in another phone...
What is Radio I and Radio II and would it make a different switching?

Having problem after radio upgrade from 1.02 to 1.06.02

I have a O2 XDA IIs. I can't figure out what I did wrong. After the upgrade, no sounds comes thru speakerphone when I receive a call and call out. This happaned after I used the phone for like a half a day without soft reset. Once I soft reset the unit, it went back to normal. I tried going back to 1.02, but the problem remain.
Here is how I did the upgrade. I extract the xdaIIs_launchROM_v1.12.62_178; remove the files ms_.nbf, nk.nbf and radio_.nbf in the directory; downloaded the french 1.06.02; Put just that ROM into the directory. Start BaUpgradeUt and it indicates the old version and the new version and the upgrade went smoothly without any error.
I did the same thing to go back to 1.02. I tried install all my software from scratch without using the backup, but the problem remain.
I read thru most of the thread and saw there is a tool called xda3nbftool. Do I need to use this?
Appreciate anyone can help!!!!
That tool is only needed if you are trying to do none same carier upgrade.
Thus I would need it as to use the o2 rom on my T-mobile I would need to fix it with that tool and a fix.bat (wiki, getting started)
In your case you are doing a same carrier upgrade.
This should work out of the box (as in run the ship exe).
Most of us have done a radio only upgrade using the 1.06.02 FRA, and have not had any problems.
In your case I would reflash using the launch rom, try it out an you might have a hardware problem.
What I read that you did looks correct.
Only thing I am not sure is did you do a Hard reset after the install ?? But I am sure you did.
Your problem is not the upgrade, I had the same problem when I was using 1.02 radio rom and THAT'S WHY I upgraded to 1.06.02.. The problem seems to be random so far and there's no real fix as far as I know. Do a search, you're not alone with this problem...
I have that problem too when using 1.02, but after flashing to 1.06.02. This problem did still appear twice - I think this is the signal reception problem. You might try to notice that whether this happens always in the same area you are in.
Thanks for all the input. I did not have this problem before I tinker with the Radio ROM. So, I am thinking this may actually related to the ROM flash. I don't think it's related to reception since my provider coverage is very good. I am giving it another try and may ended up sending it in for repair. Having to soft reset every few hours is not fun.

I also had this on 1.06.00 and 1.06.02 radio. After upgrading to 1.33 main ROM (from Siemens SX66) I have not noticed such problems. I've also noticed that you'll never have such a problem whan you have a bonded headset, even when headset is powered off.

mamaich, I think you are correct. I tried this yesterday by bonding my bluetooth headset which I did not do after the radio ROM upgrade. So far, the problem does not re-surface using the phone for more than 12 hours without soft resetting. What else does the 1.33 main ROM change?
that problem appear 4 times today. When a number get connected, time started counting, no we could not hear each other. Each time I need to soft reset.
Also, using Spite backup 3.14 to recover previous backup including mms and sms, mms cannot be received any more (I sent myself one), but sms ok.
My god! hard reset again....install everything again.
ok. some update. It happened again even I have the bonded blue tooth device. I notice however, if I go activate bluetooth and disable it, it comes back to normal without soft reset.
It seems no one can find out what is happening on the radio of XDAIIs

Please provide us with your rom, radio, and what country you use your device.
To find your rom and radio:
Start>settings>system>device information>version

SOMEONE SET UP US TEH ROM!!!
WE NO GET SIGNAL!
If you could tell us if you ahve flashed to a customer ROM or if you have a Stock ROM, the one that came with the phone. Same with the Radio. We could help you better. Thank You.

ok its a AT&T TILT
ROM Version: 1.57.502.2
ROM DATE: 08/25/07
Radio Version: 1.27.12.11
Protocol Version: 22.45.88.07H
Same here
I'm now with the updated AT&T ROM, but wit hthe same issues.
This also happened with the previous ROM.
At home I'm connected to my PC via USB. For some reason, in this location I have virtually no reception (ie I have 1 or 0 bars).
And many times, if I don't go in/out of Flight Mode after I leave home, I find myself without reception even for a couple of hours (ie the Tilt doesn't "recover" on its own).
I HardSPL'd my Tilt and tried installing the French radio in order to improve reception (other users in my location said it worked well for them), but found it was incompatible, and after a very stressful day (I was certain I'd bricked my Tilt) - was able to enter bootloader mode and restore the original radio.
At the moment I don't want to flash a Kaiser radio, and I want to wait until AT&T release their own WM6.1 ROM (I don't want to use a cooked one).
Further (I wrote about this in another post) - my GPS loses signal quite often, even under clear skies. I understand that this is another aspect of the radio drivers.
I'd appreciate any suggestions.
Thank you.
I'd rather think it's a hardware problem. RMA...
Difficult....
I live abroad, and so it'll cost a small fortune in shipping charges, etc.
Not to mention import taxes, etc, if the IMEI is changed (eg if the device is replaced).
I live in a very poor reception area just outside of Boston. Previous to purchasing my device I would only have service about 40% of the time when I was at home.
When i purchased the Kaiser reception didn't get much better so I decided to search google and it led me to this forum. After reading many threads and asking some questions I feel that that the best radio that I've used so far is NIKI - 1.58.16.27. Now I have reception 95% of the time and GPS picks up about 7-10 satelites from my basement, crazy i know.
I'm not sure how much you been reading OP but I recommend you either learn how to flash roms and radios, or you can bring your phone to AT&T and have them look at it. However that means you have to give up your tilt while its being repaired, which sucks.
is this NIKI radio compatible with the standard AT&T ROM?
I have 1.62.502.0 and radio 1.27.14.09.
Or is it compatible only with WM6.1?
Thank you.

ok, you say it improves with niki radio!?
so I have never done this before, is it hard!? were can I find a GOOD tutorial or guide or troubleshooter in case i get STUCK??
Other thing, here were I live, i think ATT from the quad band, use 850 almost all the time, anything to say about that? it doenst matter?, maybe its a stupid Q...
But the Niki radio requires WM6.1, doesn't it?
redbandana,
Did you install the Niki radio on a WM6 Tilt?
And what ROM do you have? (ie the original AT&T ROM, the updated AT&T ROM or a cooked one?)

EDGE connection major issue

Does anyone have this problem ?
Connect IE via yr mobile EDGE service..for my case is Digi in Malaysia. The first few mins or pages..it works fine..Right after that IE cannot reach any pages and time out.. All the while the "E" for data services is still connected. Brought it back to HTC service centre...they tested 1 week , change 2 mother boards and swap one new unit...still the same issue..Its not sim issue as my connection does not break in other phones. Issue prevails in Google Maps, MSN Messenger and Shape Service IM+. If anyone knows a fix...pls help as I dunno what to do with an expensive phone that cannot sustain connection over EDGE or GPRS
Thanks
Have you flashed your rom to a different one other than stock? what about the radio, which version are you using, is it stock?
I would lean towards a radio issue or the edge service sucks.
i do know that on my older 8125 (wizard) that after about 3 days of being in constant connection i would get the same problem, but all i would have to do is disconnect form it and reconnect and it would be fine again for a long wile.
Hi pdpt,
Yes I have flashed to many ROM's and Radio including, Stock, Dutty's, Sleuth, Vega, No thrills, SNE, Alex while RADIO ROMS for WM6 and 6.1 including Nikki's , Polaris etc etc. Unfortunately all results the same. Have also tried manual connection setup, Kaiser Tweak (Edge always on) disabling the 3G portion, diabling HSDPA but those only saves batt drainag.
My previous Dopod 838Pro and the HTC Touch doesnt have this issue. Its only confined to Tytn II.
You state you've flashed to many ROM's. Have you flashed back to a stock ROM from ATT or HTC? Can make all the difference.
yes of course i did flashed back to original. the new unit i got back was also stock

well i dont know much about the edge service in Malaysia but before i say its borked try getting a new sim card. if that doesnt work im going to say that there might be something wrong with the unit itself esp if the sim card works in another phone and you can surf the internet with no problem.

HW Question: Purpose of tape on Tilt internal antenna cover (and effect on GPS)

Hi All,
Does the tape on the internal antenna cover have a functional purpose ?
It is the labelled tape on this component:
link
I assume "yes" because why else would they spend the $0.04 putting it there?
I ask because over the last two years, I've replaced the internal speaker and my LCD display. Everything works fine now, with the exception that the GPS has ceased working. It turns out that as part of my early curiosity and fumbling around, I pealed off the tape then re-applied it and there is a break in it now. Is the tape an RF shield or an antenna of some sort (i.e. is there a conductor in it), or is it just inert electrical tape ? Does it affect GPS reception? If it is inert, why is it there ?
At any rate, I've tried all the conventional solutions to GPS problems, including
the usual suspects: QuickGPS, turning off AGPS, hard-reset, clear view of sky
trying different radios and ROMs--probably 6 different radios and 4 different ROMs in different combinations
the HTC GPS Tool
throwing my phone against a wall*
I've searched this site and the entire net regarding the antenna cover & tape and haven't found anything ... Any insight ?
Thanks,
Guy
*haven't tried this option yet
Currently running (but have tried 6 Radios and 4 ROMs including OEM ROMs)
HARDSPL 3.29
ROM Version: 65Series WWE 04/30/09 (Phoenix III: Phx3.1.21815)
RAdio: 1.70.19.09
Protocol: 25.83.40.02H
I just set my tilt up exactly like yours and the gps didn't work by default. In each gps program I had to change it to use COM4 instead of the intermediate driver or default setup. Now all my GPS stuff works.
I would try what is mentioned above.. I have a LG Incite that was having the same problem... instead of a com port in the "External GPS Settings", under the GPS Program Port, it was set to "GPD7" instead of "Com4".. I changed that setting and it immediatly fixed the problem... Let us know if that works for you... My GPS went out on my tilt yesteday... and nothign fixed it except for a hard reset.. now it works fine again... Hopefully you won;t ahve to do that... Also, on a side note, I am using TomTom 7.45, as that one seems to work best with my Tilt without having to run any "Extra" programs to get the GPS to work....
Maybe not waiting long enough for WM 6.1 sat fix?

If you've not tried GPS since upgrading to WM 6.1 then welcome to the effects of WM 6.1 ROMs (at least the HTC ones which take ages by comparison to get a satelite lock). The WM 6.0 HTC ROMs with early 1.27.xx.xx series radios seem to initialise the GPS circuitry with much more power resulting in better GPS performance so try a WM 6.0 ROM/Radio/SPL setup. If GPS still doesn't work as it should then yes the tape is relevant. Personally I'd get HTC to fit the new tape and see what diffrence it makes - I suspect it'll make a difference.
GPS operational after replacing antenna cover...
Guys,
I just wanted to post an update to the thread. I doubt this is a general solution to GPS problems, but it may help some folks who have the specific situation I had.
For my specific case, replacing the antenna cover plate fixed my problem: GPS had not worked for 6 months (OS sees the GPS device, but 0 satellites under all conditions), and it is now operational after replacing the cover. The GPS had ceased working after I replaced the speaker and LCD display. When replacing those items, I had partially destroyed the tape covering the internal GPS antennas.
So, to answer the questions in my original post,
1. Replacing the cover (link in post # 1) now gets me a fix, with 5-7 satellites in the open. This is at least as good as it was one year ago before I disassembled my device with wreckless abandon.
2. Further, I did some "destructive testing" of the cover I replaced, and the copper colored conductors on the bottom of the antenna cover are in fact attached to the "tape," so I infer that the tape is conductive and/or functions as an antenna, since those conductors make contact with the copper posts on the motherboard.
I will do more testing with time-to-fix and useage conditions, but for now I'm pleasantly surprised.
Note:
* I have not changed my ROM or radio since I originally posted, so the above results are "ceteris paribus" ...
* In the preceding 6 months, GPS has not worked on 20+ different combinations of ROM & radio, including WM6.0 ROMs...

I had that problem until yesterday when I switched to hard SPL 3.56 from 3.29. I can now get a GPS fix in under a minute.

Quick Q' About Radio/SPL

Okay, basically the problem is that 1 of my G1's has been playing up recently - reception is poor at best, usually only 1/2 bars, struggle to receive/send texts.
I was thinking that maybe reflashing the radio may fix this error and if not then take it down to T-Mobile to sort, but I need to know whether it is safe to reflash the latest radio if I have Haykuro's SPL on the phone?
I don't want to end up with a brick and then finding out T-Mob won't fix it.
T-Mob UK G1
SPL - Haykuro's "Danger" SPL
Radio - 2.22.19.26I
ROM - JACxROM 1.5.r4
Thanks in advance guys.

Yes it's ok... doesn't matter... if you have danger SPL now, it means you have the latest radio... but you can try to reflash the newest radio again... don't worry about a brick... just don't flash an old radio.
If the reflash doesn't work, try wipe/reset and reinstall a ROM. If you still have the problems, could be your internal antenna is messed up, in which case I would bring it in to a t-mobile dealer.
as long as you stick to reflashing the latest/newest radio (on your 'danger' spl) your fine.
do not go lower then the newest (you will brick it)!
Thanks guys, reflashed the Radio but there's still a problem.
Phoning T-Mobile just now to see if they'll replace the handset or repair it under warranty - think it was due to expire this week sometime as well lol!
Just got off the phone to T-Mobile, turns out my warranty expired tomorrow!
According to the advisor I was speaking to, because I phoned today and reported the problem - it's covered under warranty. If they turn around in future and tell me this is incorrect, they can shove it .
Now, there is a slight crack on the camera on the back(it works perfectly, simply a cosmetic crack) - does anybody think there is a possibility T-Mob would say the antenna may have been damaged by dropping the phone(hence why a crack is there) and therefore they won't cover accidental damage under warranty?
I'm wondering whether it would be better to just install an older radio and brick it, now that they've said it will be covered under warranty.
Hmmm, suggestions folks?
