Time to upgrade to a newer ROM (from Tmo 2.17) - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

Hey everyone,
I was here back in March on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=45474&highlight= when I tried to upgrade from the ROM my phone came with. I managed to get that working with your help (thank you all again), but its now time for a new ROM. There are some things about this ROM I didn't like (such as the phone skin being the ugly tmobile white and pink, even after changing the rest of the device to the Windows Default skin). Lately, my phone has also been acting up more frequently, to the point that it will no longer Sync using Activesync, let me download any kind of file from the Internet, or install any kind of software.
I know I could probably just hard reset to fix some of these problems, but considering that there are new ROMs out there, it makes sense to upgrade anyway. The problem, as always, is deciding which ROM to upgrade to. Additionally, I don't want to repeat the nightmare I had before, so I've come to you guys for help preemptively of needing it. I'll be rereading the old thread from my last upgrade, so I shouldn't have some of the simpler problems again.
As for my main concern of finding a new ROM, I need some advice. I'm inclined to install the latest Qtek ROM (I own a Qtek 9100) rather than a custom ROM, but I'm sure there are some nice new ROMs available. I've read about the Mr. Clean ROM, but don't know if its for me.
My top priority in the new ROM is stability as well as call quality. Other features, such as 802.11G support, are important, but since I can just install that patch over any ROM it isn't as big a deal.
If any of you (especially those kind souls who helped me originally) have recommendations for new ROMs that you've used, I'd appreciate it. I've been on the FTP trying to figure out which ROM is the newest/best, but must defer to your better judgement.
Thanks again.

I don't know... It seems to me that the 2.17 ROM was the last stable ROM made. I've had problems with everything that came after this and had to downgrade each time...
Maybe a hard reset and clearing out whats causing the problems...

It sounds like you just need to turn off the phone dialer skin.
There is a registry tweak for it, search the forums. I think the Wiki with WM5 Registry Hacks & Tweaks includes it. This will return you to the default WM5 dialer skin.

Thanks guys. Thanks kyphur in particular for the registry advice. I'll probably do a hard reset then and when I get back online install Total Commander to get into my registry.

Upgrading Radio Rom ONLY

Is that possible? Everything I've read involving upgrading the ROM; I'm not interested in loosing all my settings etc, I just want a better radio ROM since mine looses EDGE/GPRS connection periodically. Is there a way to do this? Thanks.
This is possible to do. The files are in the usual place, and remember to unlock your CID first.
Be aware that it may claim that it will change your OS Rom version and/ir it may overestimate the time required--this is normal. Your OS Rom will stay the same and it should take only a minute or two.
I upgraded mine the night before last. I didn't use CID unlock or anything. I just d/l'd the file Wizard_GSM_11210.exe from the ftp and double clicked on it. It does tell you that you will lose everything and your OS is being upgraded, but that did not happen, it was just compiled with that installer, that's all, so don't worry.
My signal is stronger and my speakerphone works great now. I lost nothing and nothing else was changed.
Good luck.
Yep - done on my T-Mobile MDA. The stock radio ROM sucked bananas.
Will it adversely affect my Cingular 8125 in any way?
works!
Thanks for the quick reply guys. I installed the Wiz radio rom from the FTP site and it worked. EDGE and even Wifi seemed mroe stable and faster now. And all my data's still there!
As for the 8125, my friend got one of them and I'll ask him to try updating his radio rom with this same file and see if it breaks it.
Wow! It really does make a tremendous difference, thanks fellas!
which is the last version of the RADIO ROM ?
I got 01.13.10 inside the last WWE qtek wizard upgrade (1.6.7.1)
That's probably it. My phone came with 1.09 and the ROM I just applied is 1.12.
Would upgrading my MDA's Radio ROM to 1.13.10 adversely effect my battery life?
Well, if you get signals where you had none before, you might use the phone a lot more, so that would use more energy.
Seriously, I haven't noticed any difference in my battery's state of charge or rate of discharge.
So is it safe to say that the Radio ROM upgrades (1.12/1.13) are better than the stock US TMo MDA Radio ROM? I'm looking to upgrade but don't want to wind up with worse reception and/or a void warranty. Suggestions?
you could always use aWizard and backup your radio so if you need to return the unit for any reason, you could restore the old rom. i backed all of my stuff up and its sittin on in a folder hidden away
Thanks for the suggestion blazin...I'll have to start the process of learning about aWizard and how to use it.
Settings and whatnot
I have been trying to figure out the pluses to tampering, and this is one of the first threads where I have actually found a real positive. I am kinda simple though I have been weighing the options of flashing the ROM to reclaim some storage. I LIKE the voice dial on it right now. I could care less about the pdf viewer. I can download adobe and install it to SD. What other cabs in the extended ROM can I do without, how much storage can I reclaim, and how stable is the ROM I obtain. How difficult will it be to get the settings right to make good calls. I don't use edge or gprs for data. I do use wifi at home and around town. Is there a "for dummies" primer on how to do this. I am not a complete rookie with PPC, but I have no programming knowledge whatsoever. These threads rapidly leave me in the dust. I feel like a mule looking at a new gate quite often.

Help for the less fortunate

OK... So I sit here trying to read all all of the posts out there... With one simple purpose.
What is the best version for my 8125 (I know this has ben asked before)... I am very intrestd in the Mr. Clean version, bit would like the Cingular custom cofiguration (much like the one done for T-Mobile). I can configure the setting myself, but I am still intrested an all the Cingular customizations.... So a version for Cingular has a great deal of appeal.
Presently I have the latest build from the HTC web site, but I seem to be fighting a ActiveSynce issue... I am not 100% sure it's related to the build.. but I know I did not see it with the previous build.
So here it is simply put: What is the latest build us less fortunate peolpe can get and get the customizations we need for our carrier (in an installable format)?
Thanks very much....
Additionlly, thank you for all the work that has been done to date... You guys rock! [/b]
Sorry, but I have no answer to the ROM question, but I think I might have a possible answer to the activesync problem. Did you upgrade from the 1.8 stock rom to the 2.25 official Cingular rom? That's what it seems like to me....
If that's the case, did you download and install the newest version of activesync from the MS website after flashing the 2.25 rom?
If not, that's what should fix the AS issue.
ActiveSync
I have upgraded to several version for that have been posted here.. It only seems that the issue is on the new Cingular released ROM image....
And I am running the latest build of ActiveSync....
At 1st I thought it was Norton antivirus blocking the ports.. But I set that up and still can not make the connect... removed Norton and went to Zone Alarm, open up all the programs and ports still same issue... I know it’s with the device (or I should say this OS version), since I don't have an issue with my two 2003se devices. And as I aid to the best of my knowledge it did not occur prior to this upgrade.
I think am going back to 2.17 until I see a different build for Cingular... I would love the Mr. Clean as I said, but I want the Cingular customizations…
I know PICKY PICKY PICKY

MDA C4 - Stock Rom problems - time to flash?

Just got the diamond on t-mobile currently:
ROM : 1.37.110.3 WWE
Radio: 1.00.25.03
Prot: 52.26a.25.09U
Id love to get after this stock before flashing with anything else so I can put it back if I need to!
So heres what Ive done so far and whats not great.
Added the manilla black .cabs (why did they boof it all by doing it in pink in the first place!)
Added the missed calls touchflo tab.
A few reg hacks as from this forum - not all.
So far:
- Struggles to connect back up (browser) to 3G after using my wireless connection.
- Sometimes loses the connectio to the network completey and cant reconnect with t-mobile without power down/up
- Start bar dissapears sometimes and needs power down/power up to get it back.
- touch flow is slow sometimes....annoying slow.
- dont get my favourites added to the browser touch flo menu?
Im still getting my head around WM6.1...so other annoyances:
- When I click on a test message in touch flo it goes straight into reply and also with threading....Ive seen the reg edit to diable threading but can you force it to just open the sms from the touch flow screen or does it have to drop straight into reply.
Ive been reading around here for a few days and although I didnt want to flash the beast yet....Im kind of fed up enough to either flash it or send it back. I like some aspects of it...the soft qwerty is ok but leaves you with little room to see anything else and its defo slower that normal keypad.
So Id love to here from people who have had this stock and since flashed something else and would like to tell me how great the phone is now.
Im not so fussed about the t-mobile branding of the browser but it would be nice to be able to get just to opera from the touchflo tab and also my startpage rather than theres..
Ive searched and read a lot - Im after anyone who has seen any of this and also recomendations of fixes including..'flash this it will make you want to keep the puppy'
Its almost brilliant.
I know replying takes time so I appreciate anyone who cares to share with me. Great forum.

I'd say flash it! I had the same device and it seemed slow and buggy to me. I contemplated sending it back and going to the iPhone, but I bit the bullet and flashed Swiftblades ROM. The difference is amazing, everything seems to run that bit smoother and TF3D is now usable. It is a pain having to tweak the device so it fits your needs for some people, but for me that's half the fun!
I've put loads of tweaks and apps on, some good, some not so, and it may be time for a hard reset. What the hell, I may even flash a newer ROM! (Once you've done it once, there'll be no stopping you.... it is nerve wracking the first time mind )

Did you manage to get hold of the stock ROM so if it doesnt look good then you can return it back to how it was?
I assume swiftblades rom has the manilla black and all the original HTC diamond touchflo features like youtube and the web browser debranding (i.e. loading opera without all the t-mobile favourite rubbish). Does it also have the favourites from the browser on the t-phone internet tab?
I was also on this ROM when i got my T-Mobile C4 and i can say that even with tweaks it was so awfully slow i was worried that it would continue to be this slow. I finally updated the ROM to Panosha 1.7 (very very very fast & has all the features you need, including t-mobile internet settings) and updated to the .05 ROM which definately improves my 3g & gprs.
In terms of getting the new T-Mobile stock rom, i haven't seen it been published yet but i can imagine it will get dumped and uploaded here very soon as T-Mobile have their Compact IV's back in stock so it's just a matter of time before someone get's hold of one
In terms of bugs and memory leaks in Panosha, there seems to be very few like all the other ROMs and i would say if you're gonna to change to an unsigned ROM, go to this one or Dutty's, because they are pretty much the same!
Hope this helps a little bit, any more questions then just ask

Thanks for the info :O) I was actually thinking about getting hold of the current stock rom 1.37.110.3 WWE to revert back if I have some probs. Ive seen today that someone has posted a link and orange have released 1.93.x.x from HTC. Im a bit nervous about flashing but Ive looked at a lot of the guides and read them over...do you just have to flash the rom and radio?
..thenm after hard reset you get a pucker manilla phone minus all you own apps/settings/messages etc.?
yep, just make sure you flash Hard SPL first, searhc around for a program called PimBackup if you want to backup all your contacts/calls/messages etc though message threading doesn't save but that's no biggie!

Im guessing you dont have a copy of t-mobile stock rom? Im just thinking that should this phone break at some point then without the stock rom then the warranty is probably invalid.....funny because I can find every other stock apart from the t-mobile one Ive got....
I didn't have a copy of the stock ROM, I just went for it. Someone else on the forum reckoned the first thing that happened when it gets sent back is the flash the latest ROM anyway.... it was good enough for me!
The HardSPL means you are unlikely to brick the phone though a dodgy ROM install, so if that goes on OK, you're laughing
I didn't have a copy of the rom at the time, however there are copies at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=406327
This is my backup just incase it needs to go back
So...T-Mobile reckon they have a ROM update that will be released 'within the next 2 weeks' according to the support guy I spoke to last night....probably be a 1.93.x.x variant I suppose.
Thats great news....
Only trouble is, they are renowned for all talking utter ****e!

Yep. However orange have just released 1.93.x.x and from the discussion I had they have a lot of unhappy cmpct4 owners and its a flagship handset for them.
They could do them selves a favour and de-brand for us and save themselves some time as well. Id love to know what the guys that decided to do a white and pink TF3D are getting paid to come up with that idea...muppets.

At&t Tilt ROM upgrade...question...

Hi all,
Sorry if this is a report. I've had my At&t tilt for 10 months now on the original wm6.0 rom. Lately it's been slow and thought about upgrading to wm6.1 and start from scratch. I read the rom development threads but the steps involve with flashing a rom seems so complicated that I am afraid it'll just kill my phone. I don't really need any fancy rom/radio etc. Just wanted the new features on wm6.1. I went through the At&t site for the ROM upgrade and got this link.
http://www.htc.com/us/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=67&cat=2&dl_id=94
Can I just follow this, upgrade from 6.0 to 6.1 and then restore settings from Sprite Backup?
Thanks...

That is the latest Tilt 6.1 upgrade. Just follow the instructions and you will be all set.
If you do want a speedy full featured phone that you will love. mskip has made flashing as easy as upgrading a stock rom. Check it out
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=433835
Then check out these roms, all great
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=492866
The settings you back up with Sprite back up will not be compatible with WM 6.1
I would use PIM Backup 2.8
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705&highlight=PIM+Back
It's not recomended that you pull a backup on a new OS from an older one (even though some backup programs have this feature). Installing hardspl isn't as complicated as it seems; read the instructions above in the first link several times until you feel that you have a good grasp of what you're doing. If you're stuck at a place, feel free to PM me or post is mskip's thread.

Thanks. Will the 6.1 speed up my phone? I read the first few pages of mskip's flashing rom and it just look "scary". Reading how some people flash it and the phone doesn't work anymore. I've been reluctant to upgrade because everything works now but if wm6.1 has new feature and speeds it up, I figure I can give it a shot. So PIM Backup will restore all my settings and all I have to do is install the 3rd party softwares?

No, PIM Backup will only backup your PIM information as mentioned by the program's name. You'll need SPB or Sprite Backup to backup the whole device (which again, is not recommended).
You won't realize a big difference from going to stock 6.0 to stock 6.1, however you will see one from stock 6.0 to custom 6.1

Hmmm...if it's not a big difference then maybe I should wait for wm6.5 or wm7.
What about a hard reset?

If you were happy with it when you got it new, then just back up your important data and hard reset it. That will take it back to an as new configuration (with speed to match). I've tried the HTC official Windows Mobile 6.1 'upgrade' for the TyTN II (the HTC branded version of the Tilt) and it was so full of bugs and problems that it's now back running the original WM 6.0 version again. If you rely at all on the GPS functionality of your device, WM 6.0 will likely perform far better (at least it does with mine). Hard reset and see how much it speeds up again. If you need to know how to hard reset it, that's covered in your users manual (at least it is with the TyTN II or here on xdas wiki).
Remember the old adage, if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it

I agree with the "ain't broke, don't fix it", thus I still have wm6.0. Yes, I use GPS all the time. I also have a lot of 3rd party software that are all customized so I hate having to configure it again. Does hard reset wipe everything?
All the add-ons are likely the cause of the slowdown - are they all NEEDED?

Yes it puts it back to exactly like new (except for the total call timers which aren't reset). This is all explained in the wiki (click the link in the brown bar on this website). Whatever you do, if you want all the extra apps you've loaded (probably the cause of the slowdown), you'll still have to reinstall them all anyway so have your install files/media ready.
Although you can make backups of your data, it's always preferable to have your system as lightly loaded for maximum speed so think about whether you really need and use each app before loading it on. If you rely on GPS alot and want to keep an original configuration, if the AT&T setup is anything like the HTC original setup, you're better off with WM 6.0. Test the speed after the hard reset then install each app and test for a day - one at a time, noting down the significant times you'd noticed slowness with under your current setup. This should help to weed out the culprits that hog the most resources.

Yes, it makes the phone back to " out of the box " settings. You will have to reinstall all your apps. But if you don't up to 6.1 you will be able to use sprite back up, and is it worth it to make your phone zippier ?
Honestly man,
Flash your tilt to the 6.1 stock rom. If it has any issues call customer service and complain until they tell you to go to the warranty depot/send a replacement.
I flashed the official stock rom onto my Tilt when I got it. The battery was always WRONG. It always told me 3 bars unless it was <30%. Also I developed issues with battery life and keeping Time. After some prodding they replaced my phone. My new Tilt is soo awesome, Battery life is on 3 days now with lite-moderate use (turned off 3g), battery is accurate.

There's a recommendation for you. Upgrade to 6.1 so that it can crap your phone out. And then you can go through all the hassle of dealing with AT$T warranty and maybe eventually you can get a new ( refurb ) phone out of it.
I'd do it
LOL little did I know I was experiencing issues from a bad flash. I thought wm 6.1 was sucky by default. Not to mention I had dinged up my phone and gotten a nasty screen scratch and one on the front of the phone. All the more incentive to use that warranty. The AT&T warranty is awesome!
Were Tilt's shipping with 6.1 before being replaced by the Fuze, or did you have to update after you bought it? A buddy just bought one and he's a total noob, when it comes to WM. I asked him if it has 6.1 and he doesn't know. I haven't got to play with the phone myself. It is supposedly about 4-5 months old.
Thanks in advance.

I believe AT$T released 6.1 for the Tilt in August. If he wants to check, just go to Start>settings>system>about and that will tell him which version he has.

HTC Touch Diamond Rom Upgrade Needed

Hi. I have an Orange HTC Touch Diamond and HTC say I need to upgrade to the latest ROM update to resolve a specific issue that’s making my phone almost impossible to use. The problem is that they won’t supply the ROM update because my phone is branded Orange. Orange doesn’t offer any ROM updates because they're useless so either way I’m stuck. The tech chap at Orange said to look around the web and find the download from somewhere else which is what I’m trying to do. Can anyone help? Perhaps someone can download the latest (Feb 09) update and let me have it?
Regards,
John
See ROOM "Diamond ROM developements" where you could find all you need.
The process is reversible but I'm interesting about Tech Chap at Orange: to mount a no brand ROM on a branded it you must chance SPL, this change void warranty...
D'rath
Stock ROMs really are quite poor. I would recommend the ROM in my signature. I have tried most of the WM6.1 ROMs and this one is absolutely flawless. Don't forget though, read up on how to flash first, it's painless and quick if you just follow the instructions. Everything you need is here
Thanks Blibble.
I'm on the case now with your info but am concerned about the various ROM packs that seem to be available. My phone is fine but the problem I have is that it answers calls in my pocket because the screen automatically activates when a call comes in. The latest HTC ROM upgrade apparently fixes this by the need of a sideways swish across the screen to either answer or reject the call rather than just a tap. I'm concerned enough about upgrading my phone but even more so now by an unknown ROM upgrade. What would you recommend?
Thanks,
John
There isn't a "best" ROM! You read 3D about some ROMs then decide and try
D'rath
Thanks, I do realise that but unless the ROM includes this particular fix to stop calls being answered in my pocket - which can be very embarrassing not to mention annoying, there's not much point in me upgrading. So I just need to know how I find out if the fix has been included in these upgrades in the way it has been in the latest HTC upgrade.
S2u2
If you download S2U2 and install it to your phone, that should help you with the problem you are having. It's not a cure, but a good program that runs when a call comes in or when you lock your phone.
