There seem to be a LOT of information about downgrades of the 2.xx based roms, and I wanted to see if I can summerise (based on my observations and understanding) and for people to correct me if I am wrong, so we get the information collated once and for all hopefully.
There seem to be a number of items of interest:
1. You need to be SuperCID unlocked to be able to upgrade and downgrade to any rom version (that includes bootloaders).
2. 1.xx rom version vs 2.xx (AKU) rom versions - You can SuperCID unlock 1.xx rom versions, but not 2.xx rom versions with the lokiwiz tool. Apparently imei-check can do 2.xx roms it for 20 UK pounds.
3. 2.xx roms prevent downgrading to a rom version below the current
4. There is a workaround method to downgrade a 2.xx rom if the rom version is below 2.17 by a custom 1.xx downgrade rom.
5. G3/G4 flash chips - bootloaders (IPL/SPL) with .0001 at the end of the version are G4 flash chips. There seems to be only 2.xx rom'ed devices with G4 flash chips floating around.
6. 2.xx official roms seem to include a G3 and a G4 version of the bootloader. 1.xx offical roms seem to only include a G3 version of the bootloader.
So, if you are trying to downgrade (including the bootloader):
1. You cannot do it (for free) if you have a rom above 2.17
2. You cannot do it (for free) if you have a G4 chip. You also cannot downgrade to a 1.xx rom if you have a G4 chip. Flashing a G3 bootloader onto a device with a G4 flash chip will "brick" the device if the device is turned off.
Question I have:
Does this mean you can downgrade a 1.xx rom, even though you have a G4 chip, if you are CID unlocked and do not downgrade the bootloaders? (If you are wondering why I might ask this, the blackberry connect client currently only works with a specific 1.xx rom version it seems, as RIM checks rom versions)
No, 2.x bootloaders don't work with 1.x Radio Roms.
My Wizard was not CID unlocked and with 2.17 ROM.
I downgraded to Button's ROM (flashed it 2 times) and got this:
IPL: 1.01
SPL: 2.17
Radio: 02.07.2
OS: 1.xx (don't remember now)
lokiwiz successfully CID-Unlocked my phone, and now I'm using 2.24..
You can't downgrade after 2.21, but with 2.17 (18?) ROM's you still can downgrade to 1.xx and unlock your phone.
If you were clever enough to search for all of machinagod's posts, the author and poster of the lokiwiz tool, you'd find this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=50768
This is known to work for the HTC Wizard line, with exception of the prophet, which has a different post - and a different file working for that phone. This thread states that you can unlock (cid/sim) SPL 2.x roms, which may include the G4 chipsets as well. I have not tested this tool, nor validated its functionality with G4 chipsets. Luckily, I have a G3 chipset, and I do not want to give it up for the life of me.

I hope this solves some mystery around the G4/SPL2.x CID unlocking issues. Try this lokiwizMSL tool and see if it works for you, posting on either machinagod's thread or in one of the newer rom threads.

From machinegod's post in the thread about lokiwizMSL 0.3a:
Q - How about the CID unlock tool? (for using any type of roms)
A - Doesn't work yet... Stay tuned
ie - lokiwiz will only CID unlock 1.x roms at this point in time.

Machinegod has said in a number of posts that the solution (to the G4 chips) is to downgrade the rom without touching the IPL/SPL. I have not seen anyone produce custom ROMS that do not include the IPL/SPL for the purpose of downgrading a 2.xx rom as yet. There is a thread that talks about cooking your own rom, and its quite involved. You may or may not have noticed thats one of my questions in my post of whether this is doable with a 2.x bootloader (G4 chip) and a 1.x rom (as I haven't seen it yet).

No, but for the purposes of CID unlocking, do we care? Does the Radio ROM problem prevent the device from entering RAPI mode?

Machinegod is right (as always): the only way to change a G4 ROM (upgrade or dowgrade) is to cook a ROM without IPL/SPL. I wrote a tutorial on how to do it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=56088.

Incorrect.
I started off with 2.25 G3 Chipped cingular First thing i did was unlock the sim with 3.0a. Then i downgraded to 1.8 custom rom. From there i went with Loki's 2.0b CID unlock.
Just make sure you don't have 2.25.001 etc. You don't want trailing ".001" after the 2.25. if you have trailing numbers, it means that you have the G4 chips and you'll probably fry your system if you try reflashing it.

keyword - G3 chipset.
The above is refering to G4 chipsets and difficulties doing upgrades with that chipset. If you have a G4 chipset you'll have to cook your own rom without ipl/spl updates - which is what gets updated typically and requires a CID unlock.

Hi,
a few days ago i wrote on this forum that i had been able to install an italian ROM on a G4, CID-Locked Wizard. Since then, i've received several mails and PM from users asking me how i did. Instead of replying each one, i though it was better to write a tutorial and post it here for everyone to read/comment/correct it.
Here it is. Together with the tools you'll need to perform the update.
PS: in this tutorial i'm not explaining how to CID-UNlock a G4 or G3 (>= 2.21) phone. There is not yet a way to CID unlock these phones. I'm just describing how to circumvent the CID-lock problem by installing a ROM deprived of the IPL and SPL parts.
DISCLAIMER: THE PROCEDURE I’M GOING TO EXPLAIN DEALS WITH ROM ‘COOKING’ AND THUS IT MAY CAUSE SEVERE DATA LOSS OR EVEN IRREMEDIABLY DAMAGE YOUR DEVICE!
THE AUTHOR, NOR EVERY OTHER PERSON INVOLVED (E.G. THE ROM TOOLS DEVELOPERS), SHALL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY MALFUNCTIONS OR DAMAGES THIS PROCEDURE MAY CAUSE.
By following this tutorial, you're removing both the bootloaders (IPL and SPL) from a rom of your choice. This means that, if you don't make errors while 'cooking' the rom, you cannot completely destroy (brick) your phone. Sure, you could end up with a non-booting rom but, as long as you can get to the three colors screen (the bootloader screen) you'll always be able to install a different (or your previous) working rom.
On the other hand, messing with IPL and SPL (i.e. installing a rom containing IPL and SPL in a CID locked device) is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS and MUST be avoided in most cases!!!
Installing a 2.xx rom without messing with your phone's IPL and SPL is exactly what this tutorial tries to explain.
NEVER INSTALL ROMS OR FOLLOW TUTORIALS IF YOU'RE NOT SURE OF WHAT YOU'RE DOING!!!
ALWAYS ASK BEFORE PROCEEDING! A SIMPLE QUESTION MAY SAVE YOUR PHONE FROM DEATH!
Worked perfect!
Thank you very much for the clear explanation!!! 8)

Leave the CID field empty and specify the language you're installing (ITA for italian, WWE for english).
Hi,
I have installed this SW on my MDA T-mobile:
IPL:2.21.0001
SPL:2.21.0001
GSM:2.19.11
OS:2.21.2.6
EXROM:2.21.2.109
What is the best Italian ROM to flash inside?

So is there any issues with using a mismatched ipl/spl bootloader on my G4 equipped O2 mini S?
I really want to install Mr. Clean's Clean ROM, but i am afraid of bricking it.
I have done ROm upgrades before by CID unlocking my old Qtek9100 G3 (but my foolish friend dropped it into a cup of coffeee and killed it).
I will admit, the Mr. CLean Rom was WAY faster than my OE 2.21 ROm on my O2.
Is there anyway to go back and uninstall? Ie. download rom from O2 website to restore it?

You CAN install MrClean AKU2.3 ROM BUT only if you first modify it following my guide: you cannot touch the IPL/SPL parts!!!
There are two reasons for not installing the original, unmodified MrClean ROM:
1) G4 phones cannot be CID unlocked. This means that you can replace their original IPL/SPL ONLY with a newer version made by the very same operator: e.g. if you have a 2.21 WWE T-mobile ROM then you can ONLY update this rom with a version > 2.21 made by T-mobile!!! You CANNOT use any other language nor any other operator's ROMs (cingular's, qtek's, etc).
2) MrClean ROM, as all the other home made ROMs you'll find in this forum, can be installed ONLY in G3 models because it contains only IPL and SPL version 1.0 (G4 phones need version 2.0)
Basically then, you have only 3 choices:
a) Follow my tutorial and be able to install every 2.x ROM you like (both stock ROMs and home made ones, every language, every operator). The only limitation is that you cannot install 1.x ROMs!
b) Install ONLY ROMs that are the OFFICIAL update to the one you have currently installed (e.g. if you have cingular 2.25 WWE rom then you'll be able to update it only when and if, a new, official, wwe, cingular ROM will be released). You won't be able to install a different language ROM nor a ROM made by a different operator, nor a home made ROM (like MrClean).
c) you can CID unlock your G4 wizard using some online service but: it will cost you money and you won't still be able to install home-made ROM 'cos they contain only IPL/SPL version 1.0 (you'll still need IPL/SPL version 2.0)
That said, i strongly suggest you solution (a)! It's free, it's very simple (it may seem complex but after the first time it'll be straight forward), it's the safest (because you don't replace the boot loader IPL and SPL) and it let you install whichever 2.x ROM you like!
Bye
Thank you risidoro,
Yes, i do realize the G4 IPL/SPL must not be altered to prevent from bricking the device.
I will try the Mr. Clean ROM tonight using your tutorial. I guess my only question is, will there be an issue using a 2.21 G4 IPL SPL on a 2.24ROM?
DOes the bootloader actual change with new ROMS?

Bootloader and ROM version numbers usually are the same (so ROM 2.24 should have IPL/SPL 2.24) but they can be different. I've used IPL/SPL 2.21.001 with both 2.18 and 2.24 ROMs.
Maybe newer ROMs, greater than 2.24, will require an updated IPL/SPL so you'll be obliged to CID unlock your phone. By then however, i hope there'll be a free CID unlocking tool for G4.

Thank you risidoro!! I was regretting getting my O2 miniS G4, in place of my broken Qtek 9100 G3.
I will give it a shot tonight. I noticed that the 2.24 ROM was much faster when I used it on my Qtek, over any other ROM.

Thanks for the superfast reply, actually waiting for someone to get me this phone, hopefully this week, wil try it out once I get it.
Using Clean ROM, does it just improve startup time, or does it improve performace of the phone in general ?
Do you have to re-install software after ROM update ?

Upgrading the OS part of a ROM cause your phone to hard reset, so yes, you'll have to reinstall everything. If, on the other hand, you upgrade any other part (GSM, Splash, ExtROM, HTC) but not the OS then you won't loose your data.
MrClean ROM and Summitter's ROM are both very fast. The latter contains cingular's customizations in extROM (they don't slow down the phone, they're mainly registry settings), some ringtones and compact framework 2.0 in ROM. If you're not a cingular user then i suggest you take the OS part from summitter's rom and the extrom from the MrClean. Then join the two parts with nb2nbf and flash to your device.

Any reason to take Summitter's OS is it faster or something then Mr Clean ?

No. Both summitter and mrclean use the same OS ROM (2.24.10 AKU2.3) hence they have the SAME, IDENTICAL speed.
The difference is that Summitter manually edited the original ROM and added a lot of ringtones, themes and, most important, the .net compact framework 2.0. If you install Summitter OS, then, you'll have the same mrclean basic OS plus a lot of goodies that don't take any space in storage since they're in ROM (compact framework 2.0 alone would take about 5mb of your precious storage if you installed it on mrclean).

THIS IS NOT A THREAD ON HOW TO UNLOCK YOUR DEVICE
Ok, rather than crapping on Faria's thread, I am going to start a discussion. I am curious about the G4. Yes, I know curiousity killed the cat. So far, reading the forums we have some people with G4's that can upgrade no problem, some that had to CID unlock to get certain roms to load (Faria's), and some that even after CID unlocking the ROMs will not load the extended rom. Personally, I fall in the last category.
Now, here is what had made me curious: So far, most IPL/SPL I have seen posted about is 2.21.0001 for the G4. Mine, on the other hand is 2.25.0001. So, for thos that have G4s, make a post about your IPL/SPL, if you had to CID unlock, HOW you unlocked, and your measure of success. Faria and I were discussing the possiblity that more is tied to the IPL/SPL than on the G3s. Or they are using tighter security. So if we have people with IPLs of 2.21.0001 that can load the full ROM after CID unlocking, and those that have 2.25.0001 that get the OS, but not the extended rom..it gives us a clue.

imei did it for me
IPL/SPL = 2.17.0001 which means I have a G4.
I ended up paying for unlocking at the imei website but it did the trick and solved my issues where previously i could only get the Mr Clean ROM upgrade to work. Other ROMs would only update the splash screen and the Extension ROM.

Thanks, I knew of the site, I just wasnt sure if it was a CID unlock or only SIM unlock. There was a post this morning about it only being a SIM unlock.

SPL 2.21.0001
OS 2.26.10.2
GSM 02.25.11
I succesfully installed:

RUU_Molski.Biz_226102_22610105_022511_G4_WWE
Couldn't install:
RUU_Molski.Biz_AKU2.3-226102_22610105_024711_WWE-G4-30MB-CF2
Installer said something about compatibility issues

Extension ROM locked and empty after a failed flash with the official 2.25 ROM on HTC site, can't get anything to install into it. I've since learned to live with it and hope Cingular/HTC will release a newer ROM update that will fix this issue. I'm actually looking into upgrading to a 8525 but those suckers are a bit pricey at the moment so staying with my 8125 for now.
My G4 with bootloader 2.16.0001 had unlock with imei-check.co.uk. You can do it at the same site for 20GBP and U can successfully install any ROM (shipped or custom) without bootloader (I mean IPL/SPL). I recommended to stay in your current latest version of official ROM's bootloader and you will not have any issue.

That is exactly what happened to me!! Tried the HTC rom, and it killed my extended rom. crap. ok so HTC did this to us. I wonder how many other members tried the "official" rom and it crashed, therefore have not been able to get any extended rom loaded.
Same issue here with the extended ROM and 2.25.0001
The shipped ROM for cingular 8125 would fail.
Had to cook my own ROM and manually put the Extended_ROM folder in root and run the AutoRun.exe from phone to load it.
I was trying to find the way, how to cook a ROM, whitch will work on CID-locked Wizards and I thing: On CID locked phones we can flash only ROMs with nono edited os.nb without IPL/SPL
Example:
I have had a 2.21 ROM a I was able to flash 2.26.10.2 ROM without any changes.
If a decrasing the Pagepool, the the ROM was not working on CID locked
cptcafne,
I am sure you have seen my posts in faria's thread, but I will add my woes to this thread as well.
I have a 2.25.0001 G4 Wizard.
After doing the CID Unlocking through IMEI, I attempted to load faria's beta 4 rom. The ext rom has never installed for me. I think I might have tried installing the rom image from the htc website over the rom that shipped since I thought the HTC rom was newer (I was wrong). I belive this locked my ext rom from the get go. After testing it, I wanted to go back to the cingular 2.25 offcial rom to have a stable base to install the RC1. However, I got when re flashing the 2.25 rom I receive the invalid nb.nkf error message.
If Broken has cooked is own extended rom which has worked on his G4, perhaps a seperate G4 ext rom file is the resolution that faria should seek if there is no success in automating the process in the flash.
I wonder if the locking of the ext rom is an HTC or Cingular thing. Either way I wonder if they have the ability to tell us how to unlock the ext rom?
G4 unlocked by IMEI
IPL/SPL 2.16.0001
Radio 2.47.11
ROM 3.0.0.0 WWE
Faria's 8mb ROM installed without any problems (including the ExtROM) been running OK for about a week and only the occasional soft reset.
Installed over wizard Love 2.26 ROM
hello,
G4 Not unlocked :
IPL/SPL 2.17.0001
No rom upgrade possible
G4 2.17.0001
Qtek 9100
IPL/SPL 2.17.0001
CID unlocked by the IMEI UK site.
Running the latest 3.0.0 RC1 Faria ROM - no issues with the upgrade.
Prior to CID unlock I could only upgrade the splash screen and the ExtROM.
I haven't had the nerve to attempt an IPL/SPL upgrade - not even sure what benefits it would bring.
In this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=249359&highlight=unlock+extended+rom) there is a way to unlock the extended Rom. However when I do this, all I see is the cingular ext rom files that are installed during the "customization" process. I am wondering if Cingular is in fact locking the ext rom so that no matter what ROM is flashed the ext rom will always contain the Cingular programs and files that were shipped with the phone.
I have yet to see a user with an IPL/SPL of 2.25.0001 be able to install any ext roms.

Just to clarify, G4 devices have an IPL/SPL of 2.xx.0001. If the IPL/SPL do not appear in that format when you reset your device than you have a G3 device.

cptcafne,
I am sure you have seen my posts in faria's thread, but I will add my woes to this thread as well.
Yeah, that is what looks like happened. so far from what I seen on the boards, if someone tried to install the HTC Update and it failed, then the ext rom was locked. or even removed, I am not sure.

Are you sure ? I could have sworn that some members with 2.25.0001 were able to install custom roms completely. Can anyone confirm this for us ?
I have a G4, and the original IPL/SPL was 2.25.0001. I tried all the free options to CID unlock (they worked for SIM unlock), but not worked. So I paid the £20 to IMEI-Check for the unlock key. With that I fully CID unlocked my device.
I installed the stock T-Mobile USA 2.26 ROM, and now my IPL/SPL is 2.26.0001. (I switched carriers from Cingular to T-Mobile, but prefer the 8125's keyboard to the MDA's, so I wanted to keep my existing device.)
I have applied the ROM's from Molski AKU 3.0.0 and have the newest radio 2.61 but when I boot it says that I have OS version 1.8.11.1 is that correct or is there a newer version. Also can someone outline the most stable of WM6 ROM's and maybe even links to there locations.
TIA

No, I don't believe that is the proper OS version contained in Molski's ROM.
Do you have a G3 or G4?
If you have a G3 did you follow EVERY step in the Definitive Guide to Unlocking and Rom Upgrading G3 Wizards sticky post?
If you have a G4 did you go to the IMEI website (not sure of exact address but it is all over the forum) and CID unlock your phone? (This is the only currently known way to CID unlock a G4 device, using the G3 method will brick your phone)
If you are NOT CID unlocked you cannot install a custom ROM, you will only be able to install Official Roms released by your carrier. The phone may go through the steps and look like it is working but nothing will be overwritten and you will reboot with your previous rom, possibly with settings and data loss.
As far as WM6 roms go, scan the headlines of the first couple pages and you can find that answer for yourself by reading the ROM specific threads. Every user has different wants and needs and as such everyone will have different opinions about which ROM is "the Best' or "Most Stable". Note that all AKU 3.3 and WM6 roms have issues in one form or another, they haven't been released by carriers yet because they aren't stable. Read the threads to see if the known issues affect whether or not upgrading to one of them would be a good move for you.
As always if you aren't prepared for your device to be ruined you shouldn't be flashing at all. Granted flashing is relatively safe if you follow the proper steps for your specific device, most people like to jump in with both feet and skip they highly important part about reading and educating yourself first. I am not accusing you of doing this, but since your question seems to directly relate to an unlocking issue...
OK I have CID Unlocked as I am using a cingular 8125 on T-mobile without issue and I beleive it did flash correctly as I get the molski splash screen and the IPL/SPL were upgraded just not the OS. I have been doing ROM upgrades on other platforms of devices like the razor and the IPAQ H6315 so I think this is working correctly. I also was able to upgrade the radio from 2.?? to 2.47.1 to 2.61.1 without issue.
Am I Missing something. I used the lokiwiz ver 3a to unlock it.
Thanks for the feedback. Like I said I am not new to the upgrading just new to this platform(HTC Wizard)

Yes you did something wrong....If the OS won't flash you're not CID-unlocked! Follow the sticky post by the letter (it mentions version 2b, not 3a). And make sure you have a G3 before downgrading. For G4 look at G4 section.

you only need to SIM unlock to use a cingular phone on TMobile.
SIM unlock DOES NOT EQUAL CID unlock.
CID unlock allows you to flash non carrier ROMS into your phone.
Also Lokiwiz 2b is the recommended version for unlocking. I have read where people using other versions said it was successful when it actually wasn't. They tried using 2b and had success.
you guys are great I did follow the insturctions with the correct version and it worked like a charm. Now on to flashing WM6.

What version of WM6 are you going to work with?
Hello!
I initially PM'd a few people regarding this but I think I'll get more interaction if I just made it a thread.
I have a MDA. Following the The Definitive Guide to Unlocking & Rom Upgrading G3 Wizards by Dr. Puttingham, I was able to get it unlocked and updated to T-Mobile v2.26 and the process went perfectly *smooth 'n nice*.
Now... I'm targeting XDA Mobile 6 as my new ROM (OS).
Going through the requirements of X6, I found out that it's just the ROM... no IPL/SPL, Radio, or Ext...
Also, in the guide linked above a newer IPL/SPL v3.08 is mentioned... and similarly, in the X6's thread, a note regarding a T-Mobile 2.19 UK Radio is also mentioned.
Now I have all these files but I don't know how to proceed...
what should I install first? <- Very, very Important! teh sequence
Should I go for the IPL/SPL v3?
I already studied the whole XDA Mobile 6 thread and figured that I should stick with Radio v2.19 as per mfrazzz recommendation.
So, as the title says, "PL/SPL+Radio+Ext.ROM+ROM itself"... how am I to mix them all up together?
salaaam! noticed your in lahore!
ok, i was in a similar position to you,
this is what i did:
i started off with ipl/spl 1.01
CID Unlocked and SIM-unlocked using LOKIWIZ (THIS IS IMPORTANT, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE CID-UNLOCKED!)
download the official T-Mobile 2.26 Update
Install the T-Mobile update, your IPL/SPL Changes to 2.26
download XM6,
FLASH IT!
its as simple as that once you've CID-Unlocked
you dont want to be mixing around with anything!
dont worry about IPL/SPL V3, there is very little/no gain over ipl/spl 2.26 (i actually went to ipl/spl 3.08 and then ended up downgrading to ipl/spl 2.26
Radio- use the reccommended one in the XM6 thread, no other radio roms appear to work so well with windows mobile 6
ext.rom is basically the 'extended rom' what this is, is a little area of flash memory in your wizard that, when you turn your wizard on for the first time, it installs some t-mobile customisations like the themese and dial skins and stuff.
so, in summary: after cid-unlocking and flashing 2.26 you can pretty much flash any other rom you want! its only with a G4 its a little complicated, but by the sounds of it you dont have a G4!
good luck!
oh, forgot to add:
YOU DONT WANT TO BE PLAYING AROUND WITH IPL/SPL, this is what bricks most phones
an unsuccessful OS flash can be repaired easily, but an unsuccessful COMPLETE rom update (i.e OS + ipl/spl + ext_rom) cannot be repaired so easily.
ALL of the roms in the 'Wizard Mobile 6' forums are OS ONLY, so you can flash away! just keep the official 2.26 update handy just in case!
i've never had any problems with flashing roms, and i have tried nearly all of the pandora WM6 roms (almost 10 of them i think), XM6 (the one you wish to try), WM6 BE, NBD all of his versions, TNT 2.0, Ti edition, Farias real thing and now ive settled on my own cooked rom!
Thank you so much Duke!
Okay, this just leaves a bit of room for Radio... the TMv2.26 has radio v02.25.11... I downloaded the recommended Radio version.
Should I update the ROM first or the Radio?
i would upgrade the radio rom first
provided you've cid-unlocked,you can flash every rom on the forums as though they were official updates!
good luck!
proper method would be to make sure if you have the phone unlocked first (follow whichever method is indicated on the unlocking thread).
then, flash to an official rom (whether it's the us t-mobile 2.26 or the german/european 3.08). these roms have ipl/spl, radio, and os (wm5) in them.
afterwards flash with the custom rom of your choice. most recent roms on the forum seem to be os only, so you don't have to worry about the other parts (ipl/spl, radio). older wm5 roms use to have ipl/spl integrated in them (faria, molski, xelencin). just make sure you read the corresponding thread by the rom chef for the rom you're looking to upgrade to.
finish off with the radio update. most radio rom flashs are designed to be radio only.
in summary:
unlock --> official t-mobile rom --> custom rom --> radio rom
Success
"Success"
monkey_knight, I already flashed according to duke_stix's procedure: unlock --> official t-mobile rom --> radio rom --> custom rom
All went well and I can't be any happier! This is the best ROM I've seen and to all my friends saying that WM6 is for those 600MHz processors: In your Face!
I feel my MDA is faster on this ROM then the official one!
Thanks a million to all you guys. You are all Cyber-Wizard (Level 255)
I just succesfully (hardspl) cid-unlocked my G4 wizard thanks to all the information I found in this forum. One question seems unanswered: how dangerous can available upgrade roms be? In other words: how can one be sure not to use a G3 rom on his G4 device?
A G4 safe ROM contains ONLY the OS and Splash screens, it MUST NOT contain any IPL/SPL, or it will brick your device. A good way to find out if a particular ROM is G4 safe, is to simply ask the creator of the ROM what it contains, just the OS and splashes, or OS, splashes and SPL/IPL.
Well, all the latest wm6 & 6.1 custom build roms are safe for both the devices G3 and G4,they are built with no IPL/SPL included in them, secondly, its clearly mentioned with every rom that its safe and doesn't include IPL/SPL in it.Just read the instructions posted with the Rom. But all the official stock roms do have IPL/SPL in them but they are safe to flash as they have IPL/SPL for both the version,at the time of flash, the RUU will determine the version and will only flash appropriate IPL/SPL to the phone. The network services do not offer seperate specific Roms for both devices, they only offer one collective bundle for upgrade for both version having IPL/SPL for both.

As much as I understand both very easy to understand explaination above of "how to tell which is G3 or G4" what about wording that isn't as clear "No SPL means that you can flash other SPL or your choice" does that mean IPL/SPL and does that mean that the Rom has only Splash Screens?
Also Roms that have WWE and not CE OS, is that another sign of G3 or G4?
Sorry...don't want to brick my phone. Don't know the lingo to well.

Nopes!
You misunderstood it all. IPL/SPL are Bootloaders of the phone. IPL : Initial Program Loader -Initial hardware bootup. Just like a BIOS. SPL : Secondary Program Loader it Jumps in the OS after Access the DOC and also starts the radio module and Loads the actual Windows (OS). IPL/SPL are the boot loader of your phone, much like the BIOS is the boot loader for your PC.
How to tell the difference in G3 and G4,is the difference in the DOC (Device on chip) version M-System Flash Chip with different IPL/SPL (Bootloaders). IPL/SPL(Bootloaders) are all together different for G3 and G4 devices. You cannot flash G3 IPL/SPL on a G4 device or vice versa, it'll 'Brick' the phone.
'With No IPL/SPL in the Rom' means it doesn't have any IPL/SPL in it,therefore its safe to flash to any Device, regardless being G3 or G4,as it'll do no harm to the phone. So all the latest custom roms do not have any IPL/SPL in them.
Well,Roms not only contain Splash screens but actually have OS (Windows),Extended_Rom with applications/programs and Radio Rom (GSM),which are flashed to the phone during upgrade.
WWE (World Wide English) and CE (Windows Embedded) doesn't differentiate between G3 or G4.
Hope you got the point !
