Backing up my old ROM 1st
Ok please don't hurt me, but I have searched and searched... SO I gotta ask..
Before I upgrade - I would like to back up my origional ROM 1st. I remember reading about it somewhere, but for the life of me i can't find it now.
How do I backup my origional ROM - or at least where can i download a copy of the 1.8.11.1 WWE version? Just in case i want to downgrade or need to take my phone back to the store for replacement.
Thanks in advance
Dwayne
Use wizBackup utility (but probably, it does work with ROMS 1.xx only)
You need MiniSD card (at least 128MB) to store backup image on miniSD card, but remember - all data will be removed from the card (Card will be unreadable until card format). The best way is to buy 128 MB miniSD just for keeping ROM backup.
Any time you are able to restore orginal ROM from miniSD card.
Here is wizBackup utility (You have to log in before)

i tried to update my O2i by following the link http://en.pdamobiz.com/en/forum/PDAforum_posts.asp?TID=370&PN=1
everything is ok until i backup the radio rom. System was not responsed, i must to endtask the romupdate.exe and do backup again (but without removing SD card). When ppc downloaded 3% the backup rom on SD card i hard reset it and removed the card. Now my ppc can not update new rom (v1.11), it show only "Serial" in bootloader
i formatted the SD card and copied new rom 1.11.162 nk.nbf on it (inogre the error "the parameter is incorrect", use ntrw.exe). It still do nothing in bootloader
what can i do?
I have found the answer on http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=4534
Thank for reading!
Can someone point me to a decent utility to backup my Cinguarl 8125 (i.e. Wiza100)? I read on one of the forums that the wizBackup.exe is a good file but I am not sure where to find it?
Thanks
wizbackup is a ROM backup/restore utility. Are you sure this is what you're looking for?
If you just want a regular backup utility (i.e. all your data, settings, etc.), look into one of these instead:
SPB Backup - http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/backup/?en
Sprite Backup - http://www.spritesoftware.com/pocketpc.php
Sunnysoft Backup Manager - http://www.sunnysoft.com/software.php?idarticle=51
I do want wizBackup
Hi Guys,
I understand that wizBackup.exe only backs up the ROM, which is what I want to do. Can you post it here because I cannot find it on the site either?
Many thanks,
That is exactly what I want too
Someone please post it for us.
Thanks.
Can't find it on the site now but...
...I did download it from here a couple of weeks ago.
Enjoy
Thanks for the post
Thanks for finding the download for us.
so that will back up all my tweaks and everything also?
No you have to use SPB or one of the others
i dont know if it was just me but when i tried to use this wizbackup..
my mmc became corrupt and i think i had to flash my phone again...
had to reformat my sd
I was recently VERY disappointed with SPB backup. It backs up fine, but the restore doesn't work. It corrupts the e-mail database during the restore and requires me to basically hard-reset it again and reinstall my apps.
I'll try Sprite next.
OH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Don't use Wiz-backup, I used it to back up just a few minutes ago.
It wrote a backup file to my card, and then the software followed through some steps to use terminal software to copy the file off the card to my computer.
As soon as it begun copying to the card, I noticed I could not see the card under file explorer anymore. Either from my pc or the 8125.
My 2 gb mini-sd card is now un-readable.
I have downloaded a software called SPtaskmanager which would normally be able to reformat the card, right from the 8125. This software does not even recognize a card is in the slot, and the card does not show up in the 8125 file explorer or anywhere else I can see.
I don't have a card reader, that is the only thing left I know I can try, unless somebody knows some steps from a terminal software to take?!
NOT HAPPY!

I believe i had to reformat the card through a card reader on windows.. i had the same problem
OK so there IS HOPE.
Thank you!
/eagerly awaiting arrival of card reader
Why?
Why does this ROM backup prog. corrupt the Mini SD Card? I have a similar card. And also is it worth backing up the ROM? Because from what I have read one can't really downgrade the ROM once upgraded, so what's the use of backing it up anyways...
I don't think that ROM backup programs actually store the data in a directory & file layout, they just dump the whole ROM data block onto the card sequentially, which would indeed wipe out any existing directory structure. I'd have thought a ROM backup/restore utility would have to run at a very low OS level, without any file handling routines installed.

Flash disk now useless.....or is it? Help
I also used WizBackup and I am now left with a corrupt flash MiniSD card that no computer seems to be able to read or format. Does anyone know a way to reformat the card now that i have given it total amnesia??? Any help would be greatfully accepted. Sandisk was useless.
Thanks.
Can one backup Rom to PC and restore from PC if one doesnt have SD Card??
Thanks
As Andrew posted, it writes the data onto the card directly.. Like an image of the ROM. To properly recover your card your gonna need a card reader and a tool to format it. Try this software to recover and reformat the card... http://www.datadoctor.in/
Good Luck
Don't get it..?
First you back up your ROM on a your card, then if it gets corrupt (but it does mostly) you reformat it! What was the point of backing up? Isnt't the data lost..?

I think people are getting confused with the backup util. That util should be used with a 128meg SD which the systems backup the rom image to. Then you can use that card for later restores. But using a 2gig SD with your personal data on it is a no no, since the backup tool will write to the card without regard for format.
I successfully upgraded from WM2003 to WM2005 some months ago. I'd now like to upgrade again to TuMa 1.3. Currently my existing rom is 5.03.02 and it crashes quite regularly - especially if people call me.
Anyway, I've been reading through the wiki and a lot of the threads again but there's one thing I can't seem to understand. It seems as if upgrading requires an SD card? Is this the case?
Now, before I'm accused of not reading the documentation, I have and it quite clearly states, "copy the EXTROM folder to your storage card". That's fine and well but I've never had an SD card so how did I manage the first upgrade?
What I've been trying to find out (with little success) is if "storage card" is like the ROM storage area but before I flash my SPV M2000 into a very expensive paperweight I thought I'd better check. Better safe than sorry I guess.
Can someone confirm?
no sd card
i've got a spv m2000 and no sd card but i've managed to upgrade to tuma 1.3 no problem i just copied the extrom to the storage on the phone got less storage now but still works fine

Do you remember where you copied it to? Was it the root directory or just in My Documents?
My worry is I'll copy it somewhere that the install program won't be looking. In the documentation it explicitly states "storage card/EXTROM". It'd be just my luck to copy to the files to the root of my device - try to flash it and having it fail because it couldn't find the image files.
You seriously don't have an SD Card?!
Go to a store, buy a 128 MB one for nearly nothing. Honestly, I can't imagine running a Windows Mobile device without one, especially Windows Mobile 5. There just isn't enough space natively in the device.
You don't technically NEED anything in the EXTROM folder either. Alternatively, you can just take all of its contents (cab files) and put them on your device using activesync, and run them in File Explorer to install them. It's the same thing, just not automatic.

I've not had the need to use much memory on the phone really.
When I had an iPAQ I needed loads of memory and was always using it everywhere but I've found the SPV to be very slow (hopefully improved with the new ROM) and also the headphone socket is proprietary so I can't use headphones that fit my ears that don't fall out.
As well as this, I no longer use Windows - well I use my gf's laptop to flash the phone but that's about it. There's very little integration with Unix and the SPV and it's led to a dramatic reduction of usage.
I've heard of some programs that can sync with Evolution on Unix but they're very unstable at the moment and require quite some understanding to get working and I don't have the time to get that working just yet - maybe in a few weeks time.
I've already ordered an SD card but was just a little excited about the prospect of flashing the ROM (it's like Christmas morning for me!) and was wondering if I could do it without it.
Anyway, running the cabs one by one sounds like a solution for the time being. I thought it needed to replace parts of the sub-system that needed a hard reset no?
Once the ROM is flashed, will Device Information reflect the ROM Version as WM5 5.1.1700?
There is no problem to flash this rom without SD card, because you can install manually every cab from extrom after flashing

Thanks xplode.
I've worked out that the cabs are completely independent of the ROM update and as such don't even need to be on the device.
I thought they were like install files and needed to be present after reboot for the flashing to complete properly. My mistake.
hello ppl!
i have a G3 wizard, CID and SIM unlocked - special thanks go to: Dr Puttingham, faria, machinagod, zabardast_1, its right, and all the others that contributed with their post to my actual wm knowledge -
back to subject, two days ago i've got my first ppc - a wizard, and after reading countless of (partial)unusefull stuff, and some stickyes i've managed to unlock it (it had german language), downgrade it, and flash it.. the thing is that - after t-mobile (2.26) i tried to make a backup on the sd card using mtty1[1].42, and then i put in it the latest tnt rom (pro) - everything works flawless, except the sd card. in bootloader it asks me to press the green (call) key to restore, but i don't need to, i will just stick to the tnt rom, so the backup on the card is not needed no more, but i can't access it, format it (if possible from wizard - don't have a card reader a.t.m.), .. so here comes my question: is there a way to format it / make it accessible again (the mini sd card) ?
normally, i wouldn't care, but it's a 2gb one :|
if the answer is somewhere on this forum, please give me directions, i've already read most threads (from start to end) in every topic/category, so i don't mind another one, thank you!
hope you understand my english, and also i hope someone will answer.
solved
problem solved using card reader -> format.
now i'm angry for starting a thread for such a "situation".
someone please close it, or delete it, 10x.
So i ordered a new Class 6 SD Card.
Before this i was on the stock 1GB SD card that came with the G1 with an ext2 partition, and running the latest Cyan mod.
Basically i was just wondering what i need to do when my new card comes. I know i need to partition it to FAT32, and then i was gonna do ext3, and a linux swap. Can i just use sdparted script to do this?
And finally i was gonna try a Hero rom now that i have the SD card that is actually capable of running it. I push it with adb and just flash after partitioning, right?
Is there any way of getting my apps back or am i going to have reinstall everything again? I don't REALLY mind doing all over again, but it'd be nice not to have to. And if it's possible, how?
Thanks for any help/clarification...
dear ally,
there is a app that allows you to back up apps..
p.s. i apologize im not a native speaker..of how do u say..umm ur motherlan
Yes.
First re-partition the card using parted from the recovery menu or using the Amon-Ra Recovery. There are instructions for that littered everywhere in the Q&A and the Developer's forum, just use the search.
To use the Hero ROMs you need to flash the Danger SPL unless you plan on using MicroHero with HardSPL. If you want to use any of the new Hero ROMs they will require the Danger SPL and note the bold. Look up the proper instructions for flashing the SPL before actually diving in.
And no. You don't need to re-install everything. Just use switchrom or BART to make a backup as it will also make a backup of your ext partition. After backing up, just restore it after transferring everything from the FAT32 partition of your old sdcard to the new one.
I just checked and i have 1.33.2005 SPL. I believe that's the correct one, right?
I just tried to push Bart to system/sd...i'm pretty sure i did it right but when i try to store my ext it says it can't open the file.
What am i doing wrong?

Thank you very much...that seems to have worked
I really like this recovery image too
No problem man, glad to have helped.
Download Amon_Ra's new recovery image and look for the 3 way partition option...once partioned, do a data wipe, drag and drop your rom of choice in .zip format onto the root of your sd card and rename it to "update"
Backup for Root users works well for restoring your apps. it can be found in the marketplace. I believe there is a donate version and a free version.
