Hi all, I realise there are a lot of resources around here, but to be very honest, they all assume a level of knowledge I just don't have. I'm pretty computer-savvy, but all this phone/PPC stuff is new territory to me.
The story: I recently bought an unlocked T-Mobile MDA to use on the Fido network in Canada. I'm having a lot of trouble getting things to work beyond simple voice and texting. I've finally managed to get a GPRS connection working so I can surf the internet, but I can't get Messenger to work nor can I send MMS. I'm gathering that changing the MMS settings will require I flash the ROM to a generic version, is that correct? I've found the step-by-step instructions for doing this, but have no clue what file to actually use. My #1 priority is using Messenger, and I can't connect via wi-fi or GPRS. Not sure if that's a separate issue or not . . .
I am usually very self-sufficient WRT tech stuff but I am just getting more confused the more I read. Any pointers or hand-holding would be very much appreciated!!
I'll give you what little help I can. Since I don't have fido I can't tell you the settings that you need for sure but I'll see if I can't find them for you. First, you don't have to flash a new ROM to change youe MMS settings, you just have to put the correct setings in there for it to use it. The thing with messenger is that some phone companys have started to block the ports that messengers use so if that's the case with fido, you may never get it to work. I'll do some looking and see if I can't come up with your MMS settings for you though, I'm sure I've seen them around here.
Here you go:
1. Create a 'Cellular Line (GPRS)' connection under My ISP.
Call it whatever, I called it Fido MMS.
2. The APN is mms.fido.ca
3. user=fido, pswd=fido
4. Leave the Advanced tab alone (Auto IP assignments)
5. exit My ISP connections
6. In MMS Composer app, Tools/Options/Server, grab the default.
7. I renamed the server name as 'Fido MMS'.
8. I set the Gateway=205.151.11.13 (note - no leading zeroes or port 9201!)
9. Server address is http://mms.fido.ca
If you have any more settings questions, go to post #7 in this thread. - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299023&highlight=fido+settings
Hey, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out.
Part of why I thought I would have to flash the ROM is because in the MMS servers part, I am not able to modify the existing server (T-Mobile) nor can I add a new one since the buttons are all greyed out. I figured T-Mobile had locked this setting in. Am I missing something?
You just have to create new connections. Just go to Start-->Settings--> connections tab--> Connections--> Advanced tab--> Select Networks button--> and finally the New button and use the above settings to create a new connection. After that you should be able to use those settings for your MMS. Also do the exact same thing as above to set up your GPRS settings. When you're done setting those up, to be able to connect to GPRS just choose the GPRS connection you just set up in the Select Networks page. There are 2 connections in there that you can choose which connection you want to use, just use the GPRS settings that you just set up for both of them.
I've managed to set up and connect to the various networks, but I still don't have the option to add or change the MMS server. The buttons remain disabled and only T-Mobile can be used. Still can't log into Messenger, either. The wi-fi is pretty much non-functional. I really regret buying this phone.
Thanks for trying to help me out though, I really do appreciate it.
Just to kind of get this straight, does your GPRS work now? Can you log on to the internet in internet explorer?
I'll have to do some looking, getting your mms to allow you to change to the server that you set up may only take a regestry edit.
As for your wifi, that may have to do with the security settings that you have set up. I believe you can only use wep and in WM5 you may only be able to use 64 bit wep keys but I'm not positive on that. I think you also have to have SSID enabled. I'm kind of new to this part since I just set up my first wireless network about 2 weeks ago.
Don't give up on it yet.
Ok, found the registry settings for MMS. Hopefully your comfortable enough to be able to change the settings yourself. Go to HKLM/Software/Arcsoft/Arcsoft MMS UA/Config/mm1/MMSCSettings/T-Mobile MMS
Now change these registry keys:
Gateway : 205.151.11.13
GatewayPort : 8080
ISP : FIDO MMS
MmscURI : http://mms.fido.ca
Name : FIDO MMS
Now close your registry editor and wait 30 seconds or so and press the power off button until it warns you that "device will be off..." click yes and then reboot your phone.
Your MMS settings should now be set to the correct settings although I'm not going to guarantee it since I couldn't test it myself. The only thing I'm thinking that may cause it not to work is the ConnectionVia registry setting which may cause it to revert back to it's original settings because it points to the t-mobile mms settings and I have no idea what you would need to change that setting to. I'm crossing my fingers though that it doesn't cause it to revert back.
If that doesn't work, deleting the entire T-Mobile settings key may unlock your grayed out keys that aren't allowing you to change your settings in the first place.
Hello,
I have done a search for this and couldnt find a direct answer so I figure ill ask here, it could also help others.
My situation is this, I am currently with att and have unlimited texting (including MMS and instant messengers). The thing is, I do not pay for a data plan as I rely on wifi since I have hotspots everywhere (being from los angeles).
I disabled my data connection so that my kaiser would not accidentally or automatically use my data connection, but in doing this, I cannot send/recieve MMS, nor can I use instant messenging programs as they use little bits of data.
My question is this: Is there a way to keep data disabled but only have it enabled for certain programs? If this cannot be done, is it possible to keep data enabled, but only have it disabled on certain programs?
THanks in advance for any help you guys have!
does anybody have any input on this? I would really like to know about this because I feel crippled....are there possibly programs that allow access control of programs?
Im guessing that this is not possible then? Im going to let this die and stay unresolved after this bump...would appreciate some input...
For me.. in HK.. the case you have experienced will be handled by the mobile operator which they have an "Proxy" which only allowed certain program to access .. or not program.. but may be the URL.. then different Internet Profile can be set in your PDA in order to access different URL..
So.. I don't know whether ATT will got any similar Proxy available..
Does anyone with AT&T know about this proxy which I can set up to allow only a select few programs to access my data connection?
im sure somebody knows something that could help me with this problem? I want to keep DATA disabled for programs that use it except for MMS and Instant Messaging programs that use Text Messages (because small data is required)....
maybe a software firewall for the pda would be the way to go
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=246102&highlight=firewall
intersting, and Id be able to control which programs have access to my data connection?
ill check it out! any other input? thanks in advance!

Hi I don't have a data plan and I got a picture message I want to view..is it possible to download it throught wifi somehow since I don't have a data plan? If so, how? Thank you so much in advance!
why don't you try and find out for yourself? xD

I'm sure there isn't. But I'm pretty sure you don't need a data plan. My old RAZR did it just fine without a data plan. I know from experience that you can't send or receive mms over wifi
MMS is solely and OTA event. You also do not need a data plan to view an MMS. You do, however, need the proper settings in your phone before it will DL a MMS OTA.
As for sending one over WiFi, yes, it is called email and IMing.

you used to be able to, but T-Mobile took care of that, and the APN is now blocked so you can't send or receive the mms messages. Kinda sucks.
settings for MMS over wifi?
pcforpres mentions settings in order to be able to read MMS over wifi, what are the settings? I'm also interested in reading MMS messages over wifi. It would be awesome if I could read/write MMS messages as well, since I do have the unlimited sms/mms with the G1. Obviuosly, I don't have the data plan yet. Thanks!
i think it would be pretty useful.... cause i dont get 3G service in my room or good service at all , and sometimes its impossible to even send an sms

I did not say you could send MMS over WiFi, I said you could only send MMS OTA, which means Over The Air, aka through your carrier's network.
The reason people can't send MMS with cooked ROMs most of the time is because they do not enter their carriers settings into the phone, just like you need to enter the data settings. Sometimes, the date account settings and MMS settings are one in the same, but most of the time they are not.
As well, MMS are independent from having a data account. Every single carrier allows any customer to send and recieve MMS for a nominal fee whether they have a data plan or not. Some bundle MMS in with text while others with data, but MMS is independent of both of those services in terms of network protocol and phone settings(with a few exceptions where if you have a data plan, it is the same setting that your phone uses to do MMS and internet)
WiFi and MMS
Thanks PCJforPres. Per your previous post "MMS is solely and OTA event. You also do not need a data plan to view an MMS. You do, however, need the proper settings in your phone before it will DL a MMS OTA.

You mention you do not need a data plan to view an MMS. I'm currently able to receive the MMS, but not able to download it. Is this what you are saying as well? or can we actually read it via wifi? Are there proper settings to use with no data plan? These MMS messages I somtimes get are just text, but for some reason they come in as MMS. SMS works great. Any thoughts or solutions?
Yes, you must set up your phone with proper MMS and SMS settings for your carrier. MMS does not need dataplan.

What is likely happening is that you do not have the proper MMS settings, either the ROM doesn't have the MMS application, or you have yet to set the settings up. So instead of getting the MMS, you get just the text with a blank "image" box or whatever because it cannot connect to the server to download the data portion. There is no way to us WiFi to do this, because the internet has no way of accessing your carriers network and obtaining that info. It is stuck in your carriers routing system, and after X amount of time will be deleted if you do not download it.
Call your carriers CS line and ask them what the proper settings are for MMS, even if they say they don't support the G1, insist that they tell you the manual settings for a smart phone... you should get APN info, Proxy and Port info, default website info(this is the site it downloads from technically), network type (ie is it WAP, Secure WAP, HTTP, Secure HTTP)... there might be more or less info needed, but those are the basics.
You can usually search the interwebs for this info as well.

And these APN settings are far and few to find but good luck if you find them, I have tried everything, every different type of APN for T-Mobile US and had absolutely no luck.
These are not facts but my own conclusion about this: What I'm afraid is that Android pushes all MMS activity through the data connection anyhow. Because after using another T-Mobile SIM, with the data connection, I was instantly able to download all my MMS pictures. So I don't think there is any correct APN setting for MMS to work without the data plan sadly. That's why I started a thread awhile ago to hopefully build support.. but I guess most people out there have the data plan or no data plan + no messaging or simply just don't care about MMS.

I'm just hoping that somebody will try to fix this problem eventually, but like I've discovered there just isn't much demand for it. Personally, I want to get into Android dev but I can't say how long it'll take me to learn the ropes plus if I'll even be able to do anything about it myself.
MMS over wifi
Yeah, it is crazy that MMS is not available over wifi that we know of. I was going to call tmobile for the APN, but from reading it sounds like MMS by default goes over there new data APN? no clue. What a crappy way to make money for tmobile that they have to force customers to have the data plan. At least SMS works and other functions over wifi (which is really all I need). I don't have time for non-stop data access for my phone. Yeah, hopefully there will be an alternate fix to access MMS over wifi or another APN. Any ideas or does any one have a working APN they can provide?
I guess I'll try tmobile again for a valid APN.
I removed the bloatware, and got my phone all set up, but I can't receive MMS messages. I can send them, but when people send them to me, I never receive them (it never even tried to connect to MEdia Net to retreive it.)
I have gone through the steps to enable/disable the proxy, and I can connect to the device.home page in the browser, but still no MMS. Any ideas on why this happens? My MMS settings look like they're configured correctly...
btw, this happened a year ago when I removed bloatware, so I went to AT&T store, and they had no idea (also confused by my SPB mobile Shell) & ended up resetting & keeping bloatware. I also know it's not my service, because it worked fine with the bloatware, and I put my SIM car in another phone and receive with no issues

So you think that AT$T has a different , separate MEdia Net server with different server settings for every model of phone that it sells ?
Sorry, I meant that I don't know where I can use those settings. Everything in that link you sent me that looked familier, I had seen before trying to fix this (the username and pass, for ex), and I tried to enter the IP address before in the menu I found to enter it, and it wouldn't let me send mms at all.
I have yet to find a WAP settings menu to change the things that link tells me to change. When I goto the GPRS settings, I only have 2 check boxes (PAP or CHAP auth.)
Start\Settings\Connections\Connections then just edit the settings.
maybe I'm just stupid, but I can't get this to work. I've found cab files that people said work to automatically set up the settings. I've manually done the settings other people said to put it.
I tried to decipher the link you sent me, and input the settings in it, but I only have a couple of those menus and settings, so unable to use it. I don't want to, but I'm worried I'll have to re-install all of the bloatware again, because it seems like it's the only way to get this thing to work...
Use the files from this thread.. Or change your radio or something.. That link should help you.

I installed the cab. It put my network back to 3G instead of HSPDA (even though it's set in Kaiser Tweaks to be on HSPDA), and I still can't receive pics
Hi guys,
i was previously using a WM platform and now jumping to Android, so I'm pretty new here.
So i dont have any data plan for my milestone and i installed APNDroid to disable 3G/Egde/GPRS. I enabled the option to keep my MMS working. But the problem is that i cant even send out a MMS at all unless i enable my 3g/Egde/GPRS.
Is there a way to fix this or is it a bug?
Thanks guys for being patient with me.
Do you use the most current version 2.1.3? This enables you to keep mms service active
Yes, i download the latest apndroid in the market. Still, i cant send out mms when i disable my 3g/egde/gprs. I can only send mms when i enable 3g/egde/gprs.
Check the contents of your MMS access point: Settings->Wireless (something like that) and find your way to the access point list on your phone (sorry I have German locale so I can't tell you a specific path)...check there if there is still "apndroid" appended and delete this sequence from your mms-profile...also make sure that the APN-type is "mms" (without the quotes)...
I checked and notice that if i disable "keep mms" option, my mms apn doesnt have "apndroid" behind it. Its weird tho. Is apndroid working well for you?
Yeah, mine works flawlessly...:/
