how long to use the AKU3.2 Rom?? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

as title?
thank you!!

I don't really understand what you mean... If you meant "how long have you been using 3.2": I've been using it since late AUgust (occassionally flashing back to Molski 2.26 for compatibility test purposes) and have had no problems.

What advantages do you see in 3.2 over 2.26?
While tethering my MDA to my laptop I noticed if I try to use P2P or any program which makes excessive connections the MDA will drop the connection. (via usb tethering)...have you noticed if 3.2 tethering is more "robust"?

Most importantly, it's faster to boot in after a reset.
Also, the new BT can be advantageous in some cases (for example, multiplayer games) because of the (restricted, but still working) PAN support.

Define "best" for us and I'm sure you'll get many suggestions.
If you are looking for Direct Push mail, either of the released AKU2 ROMs will work fine. Who's your carrier?
The new i-mate one works great for me!

Great, I have been waiting for this link for ever. However, I have one question. If I flash to the updated ROM on Qtek9100 or Kjam for that matter, how easy/difficult/impossible it is to go back to the previous ROM.
Is there a way to create a one file EXE of the original ROM like the updated ROM ?
I am just throwing shots here. Can someone give me some info please.

Thanks huangyz for your reply. My question was very generic since I was still in the deciding stage at that time. I have just finalized my order for Qtek 9100 today. Are you using the updated PushEmail ROM for Qtek ? Hows your experience on the stability. When I spoke to the store guys, 2 of them told me that this version is still unstable. Hows your experience been.
Thanks

yes,im using the newest 2.17.7.2wwe rom,it's really stable and fast , even with the omapclock set to 240MHz. my Qtek9100 has been running for several days without a restart . think this would be the contribution of the AKU2 thing.
i don't use pushemail, so, no suggest about it.
another thing i must say is that by now i have only the SPB-GPRS-Monitor plugging installed, no other Today-Addons. 'cause i need to confirm which PPC utilities would have a conflict against this new rom. I am planning to install Resco-Explorer this weekend.
Hope this could help you.

hi there huangyz!
Did you ever try the Qtek Test ROM 2.8.7.1 WWE before going to 2.17.7.2 ? Would you say 2.17 performs better [without Overclocking] than 2.8? I loaded 2.8 because I wanted A2DP for BT and as I understand it 2.17 does not have A2DP, I won't be using Push E-Mail. So I am deciding if I should flash to 2.17 or stay with 2.8 and wait for another ROM.
Just to endorse Huangyz comments, I'm running the new QTEK 2.17.7.2 ROM as well and it's very very stable (I use the OMAP at 240 as well). Am using the SPB Pocket Plus on it with no issues - can't remember the last time it was hanging needing soft reset. For some odd reason I also no longer have issues with Activesync failing every few synchs but that may be unrelated.
you are probably right with it being unrelated. for me I haven't been having AS issues even with the dopod shipped ROM or the Qtek Test ROM. Can you shed some light on performance without Overclocking or would you say that overclocking is a must [I am not sure if I am ready to trade off the device's uptime for a slight increase in performance]. With the Test ROM when I listen to MP3s using BT A2DP and then try to do something else [i.e. compose an sms or type a short note/document]... the device becomes slow as a snail and it is very annoying...

Hi,
I have heard alot about omapclock and about overclocking the device. I know that it shouldnt be overclocked beyond a specific limit as it may make the device unstable. But, forgive me, I had a very basic question here. What does this omapclock do ? I know it can speed up the device but it will always be at the cost of something isnt it ? So whats the trade-off here.
Hi to all, here goes my First post
Greetings from sunny Europe..
That be one..
As far as Omap. It does exactly to Wizard what overclocking front bus to CPU in PC.
Increases clock frequency that controls the cpu/ and possibly memory.
I am not programmer of this software (omap), but usually a several settings are connected together, like speed of cpu, memory, and possibly of some other subsystem like GPU (graphic card in wizard)
BTW Thanks to guys that made omap, great piece.. i am succesfully using it and clock of 240 is where i start
My current machine(wizard) is SPV M3000 From Orange on latest official Qteq rom.
i have all kinds of observations about it, (both phone and rom) but for now i'll keep it to myself as they ALL (i guess) come from my craze od d/l stuff and installing on my wizard with no brains at all
Thus far (getting back to tradeoffs and performance..)
O/C with omap is a necessity if u want to listen to high quality mp3 and be able to use anything else on wizard.
my experienc is that using pocket music (great mp3 player) with high bit rate mp3 heavy eq applied, completely freezes any action and reaction on wiz. and even turning down volume can take about 5 to 10 seconds after pressing touchscreen..
with omap applied cpu usage drops to around 70% and it behaves ok.
As far as uptime.. i have noticed no difference even with HEAVY overclock.
most battery consuming i think is: 1. WiFi, 2. loud music with high bitrate mp3 and built in speakers, 3. BT, or brightness turned on all the time(no screen saver) .. whatever the rest may be..
So if i am not mistaken cpu in wizard have 2 cores, one for DSP and phone processing, the other one for OS WM5. now i am thinking.. dynamic allocation of unused phone core to main processing power..for the os.?
Mmm 400 mhz for my wizard.. Me likin' it
..that's as far as my dreams go..
Greetings to all and i hope this place stays as cool and essential for all of us.. 4evA

sure, i try 2.8.7.1WWE-Test for nearly 2weeks. I took no advantage of A2DP because i rarely listen mp3s using my qtek.
i have no impression on this test rom now, except that i had to reset at least once per day.
Thanks for the info. I was wondering if I go with the 2.17 ROM can I downgrade to 2.8.7.1?

I haven't tried it yet, still running 2.17 Summiter Custom ROM.
Please post your experience using this ROM.
i can't update yet since i'm at work
My "quick" experience thusfar:
OS Build 14928.2.2.0
IPL/SPL: 2.25
ROM 2.25.11.1 WWE
Radio/GSM 2.25.11
Ext. ROM 2.25.11.102
I haven't noticed much different with this build versus the 2.23 that summiter released late last week.
Note that it still has that USBSwitch program installed by default, so you will need to change it from Serial to RNDIS to have a reliable ActiveSync. Note that I think this is in one of the CAB files due to the fact that my phone synced before customization using RNDIS by default, but after customizations, I had to go to USBSwitch to revert back to RNDIS.
It is an AKU2.2 device and has the GetGood, Clearview PDF, and ExpressMail installed by default.
I can't tell whether or not it has A2DP as I don't use Bluetooth devices. Push Mail works well with my Exchange 2003 SP2 server.
(Summiter: If you read this, consider including the "Device Lock" application found in the development section of this forum)
*Email vibrate while sleeping bug is fixed...
*If you put the device to sleep, while plugged in through the USB cable, Windows drops the connection. Still Power Charges though.
*MediaNET connection not there. Has a generic connection with Cingular GPRS connection strings.
*WIFI cert enroller not working for personal certs. You can still do manually using PFX import utils
*Seems about as speedy as Summiter's 2.17 release.
Will report as more things come up.
WAP pages load quickly and the default settings for GPRS allow connection to GMAIL etc without any alterations.
Appears to be solid at this point.

It appears to, I know that I had used AWizard to Sim unlock my phone but now I tried a T-Mo sim and it didn't work! Just asked for the unlock code.
Thanks for upping this icema!
At first glance it appears to be the same as the aku2.2 (ROM ver 2.17.11.1) ROM, excpet that the radio stack is slightly different. The core OS and extended ROM are the same code-wise (only versioning numbers are changed). The bootloader code appears the same as well.
But, at least we have a full build with a more appropriately incremented build number.
I'll get crackin' on some stuff tonight.
I have intalled this but I can not find the cabs to add A2DP to it. Summiter what cab do you use in your builds? I looked on the FTP site and I can not find it. Want to use my headphones again.

Here you go,
I always unlock the Extended ROM and copy out every last file. Then I empty it. I figure if I can't build custom content then at least I can clean it out and prevent it from even trying to customize on hard reset.
is it worth going from summiters to this?
Hmmm, really want to upgrade. Only question is - how likely do you think it is that this will be the official Cingular release? Would hate to upgrade and then see official Cingular release in 2 weeks is slightly different.

Yeah, if vibe-on-email is important to you at this very moment. =)
There will be some customizations done shortly. (a2dp, cf2, themes, ringers, etc).
Speaking of themes, now that the date is back to being a single line, the themes included in previous ROMs look bad. (They had a darker background behind the 2-line date/time). Anyone have some suggestions for themes to add? Ideally, I'm looking for themes that will appeal to the widest audience.

I'm guessing, and only guessing, that since they've tightened this thing down with the connection settings change (got rid of the whole MediNET connection w/ proxy disaster) and removed the stray settings that are typically present on bare OEM devices (phone net select, phone TZ autoselect), it's pretty close to being a final release. Icema said that if this one passes regression testing it will be final, although I don't know his source for that info.
This ROM was built on 5/11, so I suspect it's been through testing since that time.

AKU 3.2 and Bluetooth Modem?

I have Faria's AKU 3.2 RC1 ROM installed but I can no longer use the Wizard as a Bluetooth modem. I have sucessfully paired it with my XP laptop but I can't see any services the Wizard is offering. Previously with the official QTEK AKU 2 ROM and the RISidoro 2.26 ROM I could select the Serial communications service from the Wizard and I would get a Bluetooth modem installed on the PC.
I had a search on here and on Google and found these:

Neither of which has helped me.... This is for a plain old dial-up connection to a console port on a Cisco router, so no Internet connection, no PPP etc. Can this work with the AKU 3.2 ROM?

Thanks for that insight, I must admit I did find that after a bit more searching after I posted the thread.
It looks like what I want isn't possible via Bluetooth with AKU3 since there is no longer the ability to have a Bluetooth Modem. I am sure I would be able to get the internet sharing working but that isn't what I want to achieve - I want to open an asynchronous terminal session to a Cisco console port over a modem link.....
Ah well, it was a nice thought...
How do we influence Microsofts Developers to get this re-added since as a networking engineer this was a really useful tool to have?

One of the improvement of AKU3.x is that dial-up modem link is no longer supported. Instead, you should use BT PAN (BT networking) from your XP to connect to your phone and setup internet sharing on your phone to enable internet access for your PC.

Depends. It has some good sides (some kind of BT PAN; decreased boot-in time etc) but the lack of BT DUN may be a real pain in the butt.

"Internet Share" I miss you!

I updated to Faria's AKU 3.2 and loved it........I do mean loved it! Then I started missing the calls and voicemails. I pressed on and reflashed everything............started missing calls again. I had so fell in love with the rom and the internet share. I finally with much regret had to go back to the 2.3. I miss the "Internet Share" feature that was on the 3.2. I am have to use my phone on my laptop quiet a good bit and you can understand how depressing this has been. I sure wish we had a working 3.2 or 2.3 with internet sharing. I know Faria's coming out with something.....praying and hoping in Cingular land.
yea that was a super cool feature.
Tomcat,
The 2.3/2.6 Roms have the same program. It is called something different in those ROMS, but still allows you to connect your phone to your PDA. The only difference between the two is that the 2.3/2.6 ROMS allow USB or IR connections while the 3.x+ roms add Bluetooth as an option.

now that i know what causes the phone to fail [a specific file] i have made some changes to aku3 roms, but i got no time to release yet.
The program is called "Modem Link" I just build a new media center pc and I didn't have any way of connecting it to the net so I was using that and it worked like a charm. I connected it through the USB, used this driver http://www.pdagold.com/files/articles/en/0000000269_HCxN12752.zip
Oh and Faria glad to hear your on top of the missed call issue, that and those cool looking crossbow icons are 2 things I'm really looking forward to, Godspeed
It's just not the same
Yes, I used the modem link before going to faria 3.2 and I have gone back to it now, but the two are not even in the same ballpark. With the "internet share" all I had to do was simply plug in my phone and bam! With the "modem link", I have to make sure my phone is now hooked to the internet (I have direct push activated). if I don't do this, it might take longer for the "link" to happen. I then have to dial in with the modem.....blah...blah....blah! As stated once you haave experienced the "internet share".................WOW!
True enough, it's a world of difference, I wonder how hard it would be to port internet share to AKU 2.3? actually scratch that, that's time better spent working on getting 3.2 working perfectly.
Modem Link and Internet Sharing both have their advantages and disadvantages. How to tweak to the maximum the Kaiser GPS?

Hello there,
I bought a week ago a second hand kaiser, and i noticed that it already had the hyper dragon IV lite rom flashed, so i told myself, all the hard work is done, go try some custom roms.
And I did, there was some lite ones, some plenty of softwares, some 6.5, but the thing i want from this phone is: THE GPS and the MP3 player, thos are the most important things for me, since i am all the time moving here and there, i really need them.
So, in order to be a more independant guy, i searched, and i searched again, i found some useful threads that made my gps work (because it almost wasn't working i bought it), and some others that made GPSTest display high bars on gps detecting but no fix at all (it also screwed my signal, and fu**** up my camera, and that's bad), all that by changing radio roms and trying.
And well i am very tired of trying again and again, feel just like if i was stuck in the middle of nowhere.
So, my questions:
Does the gps really work better on 6.0wm than the 6.1 and 6.5?
Does the gps really work better on stock roms than cooked ones?
Does the quickgps software really improve the speed to get a FIX?
How long are the bars your devices display when you activate your GPSTest soft? (i'm having a quarter max, and when i say a quarter, it is really the down limit of the quarter, it rarely go upper)
I have a tomtom 7.450 soft, and this thing is all the time saying bad gps reception (sometimes it even end up screaming no gps harware), is it normal?
So what software do you use for navigation?
I really don't care about cooked roms optimisations, fast and everything and all that, i want to be able to answer and emit calls, receive and send SMS, write some notes from time to time, and make GPS working great, wanna have a super fast fix.
I'm living at Brussel in belgium, living in the 5th floor, and testing my gps close to window, or i go to a parc 10 minutes away from home.
I am ready to try almost everything that can guis ALL of US to have a better GPS!
This works for me.

In my experience solely with Official HTC ROMs (which don't include WM 6.5 of course) yes - and by a longggg shot.
Does the gps really work better on stock roms than cooked ones?

I've heard it does but they'd have to do pretty well to surpass the GPS performance and simplicity I'm getting from my current setup.
Does the quickgps software really improve the speed to get a FIX?

As I charge my TyTN II by putting it to bed in its cradle every night (which is connected via USB to my PC on the internet), it automatically updates its QuickGPS data so it's hardly ever more than a day old any way. Often times during a day while I've got an active data connection I'll also manually initiate a QuickGPS download. Interestingly, the HTC Official WM 6.1 'update' for my TyTN II broke this feature and QuickGPS wouldn't automatically update when plugged into its cradle - even manual updates didn't make a difference though as far as WM 6.1 was concerned.
How long are the bars your devices display when you activate your GPSTest soft? (i'm having a quarter max, and when i say a quarter, it is really the down limit of the quarter, it rarely go upper)

I don't (need to) use that software as GPS performs fine without it on my setup.
I have a tomtom 7.450 soft, and this thing is all the time saying bad gps reception (sometimes it even end up screaming no gps harware), is it normal?
So what software do you use for navigation?

I have version 6.032 which came with my HTC Branded TyTN II on an accompanying CDROM. It's still avail for purchase although for some crazy reason TomTom wont sell version 7 or even an upgrade to it so there's no official way to buy it except for on the devices it comes with. If you get hold of version 6 from TomTom on a device kitted out as per mine, it will work and work well - unless you have lead lined walls and heat reflective film on your windows in which case you'll only get good performance outside.
I really don't care about cooked roms optimisations, fast and everything and all that, i want to be able to answer and emit calls, receive and send SMS, write some notes from time to time, and make GPS working great, wanna have a super fast fix.

Similar priorities to me, the only true speed/performance related area I find important is GPS, reliability is the next preference and thats where the Radio version I'm using comes into things. I found that although 1.27.12.11 gave quick GPS fixes, sometimes when Pocket Media Player was playing a music or video file, it'd stall its playback while waiting for TomTom to get a fix. Radio version 1.27.12.32 fixes this and also gives quick GPS fixes. I have tried even newer radios (2 versions of 1.27.15.32) but alas as is with the case of many of the newer offerings, that was a step backwards in terms of GPS performance (at least here in the UK (/Europe?).
There is a section in the xda-dev wiki all about improving GPS performance if you haven't already found it.
I had tomtom 7 and the gps fix in that software was horrible for me. Even when google maps and gpstest had a good fix, tomtom would say "bad signal" or "no signal. I switched to igo which locks in after a minute and works perfectly. The other problem that could be affecting you might be the radio version. I had one radio that would make my GPS useless; it would never connect. Try changing your radios and see if that helps.

I don't understand what you're getting at. The precise setup in my signature works really well for GPS. If you flash all those components and aren't to far away from the UK, I imagine it'll work well for you - there's no harm in trying.

The map for my 'old' version of TomTom was on special offer (Western Europe 6.75) so you may well pick up a bargain.

I was just kidding about lead lined walls and metalised film covered windows (although many new cars these days have metalised windscreens, so if it doesn't work in your car that may be why).

Thats because you've not read the relevant ROM Flashing wiki's and stickies enough to know that you must use a WM 6.0 Radio with a WM 6.0 ROM. I suggest you spend more time revising things in this area as it WILL be time well spent and you'll learn more about your device.

Well you needent. All the details of what works best (as far as stock components go) are in my sig and as Belgium isn't far from the UK, I cant see why it shouldn't work well for you also

Radio: 1.27.12.32

You did read the part in the wiki about making sure you have a WM 6.0 compatible SPL version didn't you (SPL questions? section covers it well). Again, you need ALL the bits in my sig (note that I don't need or use GPStest under this WM 6.0 setup). I cant say how it'll go with other than TomTom 6 as thats all I've used apart from Google Maps which also works very well on this setup - you might want to try the free Google Maps for testing purposes if you have a data package from your network provider.
I got my current setup by flashing hardSPL 1 then the complete ROM shown in my sig (which came with 1.27.12.11 Radio originally) then upgrading the radio to 1.27.12.32, then flashing the HTC 1.93 spl (this last step shouldn't be necessary though if you think you'll be doing more flashing).
I'm using the official WM6.1 and the GPS lock is horrible. I can see it getting signal from a number of sats but it can take 10minutes to lock in sometimes. I've read some threads on the subject, and have tried Quick GPS and have aGPS off, but neither guarantees a quick lock.
I seem to recall WM6.0 was better but it was also using a different radio then as well.
Anyway, sorry nothing I can offer to help.

You mean like the setup in my signature? You do realise it's possible to go back to this if you read up here on xda-dev about how to do so?

I agree, short of trying a custom WM 6.1 ROM, with no guarantee of success or installing third party apps to 'help' the GPS work properly, IMO WM 6.1 is a lost cause as far as GPS is concerned.
I had the same problems with the GPS, what I've found to work is using a program called GPSToday. there are 2 programs, one is a today plugin, and the other is a program. I use the program, and it really makes a difference for me. If you do a search in the Kaiser software forum, you will find more information about it. I use it with TomTom software, i start GPS today a min or 2 before i start tomtom and i get a fix right away.

Great News from Here
I Managed to get my phone configured exactly like yours, and god! It is damnly fast, i got my first fix within seconds, its almost unbelievable !
I had it configured like that when you first advised, but i forgot to downgrade spl, i suppose that was the cause of the malfunctioning.
I really recommend to everyone who have the same priorities, to flash back to Flying Kiwi settings:
ROM Version: 1.56.405.5
ROM Date: 08/28/07
Radio: 1.27.12.32 (better than 1.27.12.11 with WMP)
Protocol: 22.45.88.07H
SPL: 1.93

Here is the threads that can help you :
For the SPL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=354061
For downloading the 1.56.405.5 rom: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Kaiser_ROMs
For the 1.27.12.32 radio: http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Kaiser_Radio
Man, you really were very helpful, thank you very very very much, and my kaiser is even faster with this settings.
If i can help by anyway send a pm please
This post should be made sticky for future information!
EDIT:
I have to Warn you Guys: In order to have the GPS working you have to follow this procedure:
Flash the 1.56.405.5 rom and then flash the 1.27.12.32 radio rom, and finally flash the SPL, otherwise GPS will not work, i just tested that
Did the Wm6.0 up/downgrade also resolve the precission of the GPS?
Iam now on WM6.1 WWE with radio 1.70.19.09 and hardSPL 3.56 with a realy fast GPS fix within 30 secs. no problems with that
But the problem is that I mention a little lag kind of thing when navigation with TT7 in my car. The Tomtom arrow is little bit behind with the reality it is usable though but if i connect it to an external sirfIII gps mouse it is more accurate.
So I wonder if you guys also have a slight GPS lag with WM6.0...
