FTA ROM makers: MD5 Checksums - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

Hi All,
Again, someone is replacing files on the FTP site with viruses. It must be someone who is familiar with this site, as they seem to know their way around.
Could all those who upload ROMs please also add the MD5Sum for the file in their posts?
MD5 checksums are hash-signatures of the file and will tell those who are downloading that they are untampered files. MD5 sum has been around for a long time and is industry standard. Here is the official Microsoft MD5 utility, and here is another popular one. Unix/Linux usually has the utility installed as standard as the command "md5sum".
I personally will not be downloading anything from the FTP site ever again, so to those who already provide alternate hosting for ROMs may I say a huge thank you! It's just not worth the risk using the FTP IMHO; the virus essentially erases your computer and you lose everything. And it's not a "virus" as such, so your anti-virus is likely useless against it.
Thanks to all those who work diligently on their ROMs. If those who release them could do this, I would be even more grateful to them than I already am.
Regards,
Fraser.

we need proper login. whoever control the ftp may wanna setup different access for who they trust different to anonymous users. also turn on the logs for all activities on ftp.

Yeah, I'm with you on this too. I've restrained myself from downloading Helmis 1.4, and anymore in future, for this fact. At the current time I can't risk it as I have important coursework in progress.

FTP access
I have spoken to MDAIIIUser about the problem as well. He came up with the simple solution.....
The UPLOAD folder is has an access freely available to anyone using the WIKI ... The rom uploaders have now, i believe, recieved the password to upload the roms to a more secure part of the site. The EASIEST way to prevent that happening again is to post the file size on the site.. and provide mirrors...
Unfortunately it will only be a question of time until the FTP site gets trashed again.. and be honest.. some people using this forum have a problem finding the instructins to flash a rom using the Wiki.. do you think a MD hash is going to solve it??

I'd much prefer MD5 over filesize as the filesize is easilly manipulated. Especially in archive files. Using filesize is a false security and therefore it actually makes it less secure. People have debated this issue over and over and things like MD5 always win out. The only real alternative is digital signing and that's a lot more complicated.

That's their problem unfortunately. Security concious people have been posting MD5s for years, but most folk don't always check. Most automated build scripts I've used that automatically downloaded libraries from untrused sites has MD5 built in to force it. Just look in any Mature makefile on a large project.

This is just a word of caution from someone and a group that actually possesses both dev and consumer model phones and have already attempted what you are proposing here.
either way good luck, but do not return the device to ATT if you break it.

Which? I was able to get a copy of motoboot.bin (I think, anyway. designgears, could you post a md5/sha hash of the bin file for us?)
FYI, here's what I have for the file I was able to download:
Code:
$ shasum motoboot.bin
fda1fdbfd70628cbf1c79361525168847a00830b motoboot.bin
really i cant tells me file has been removed can you mirror or send ?
"Doesn't blow" should mean "lets us load our own kernels" in this context I think
now to figure out how to get the dev bootloader onto our phones..
sorry, was uploading a compressed version

You are not listening and I'm trying to help you not brick your device. DO NOT FLASH THAT BOOTLOADER or you phone will not work...there are a lot more signatures than just the bootloader, in fact if you don't hack/crack the mbr or change the signing keys and verification in the NVRAM you will just sit there with a brand new paperweight.

If you would like to brick your device I can teach you how to get it on, but it will require you to be rooted and running a custom recovery, the other method requires a fully released sbf file.

[DUMP] Olympus GRH55 2.3 Engineering build System Only

I have decided not to delay any longer getting these files to the dev community here. I expect these may be removed from Megaupload by Motorola very quickly so grab them while you can!
This is a dump of the complete system directory for a recent GRH55 2.3 Gingerbread development build for the Atrix dated 1/21/2011.
I extracted it from the CG60 SMG file which was split from the SBF file using SBF Recalc 1.2.9.1 and then opened as a disc image in WinHex 15.5 Specialist version.
We will also post an archive of the raw CGs which include a number of other partitions that may be of interest as well as the boot files that were packaged separately with the SBF.
Please be very careful when trying to use any of these files on your stock consumer phone. The system includes many debug features and binaries etc. for development that are not found in stock builds and are of little use to end users and in some cases decidedly unwanted on your phone.
Hopefully the developers here will quickly set to work finding out what is most useful and safe for end users and everyone can enjoy the fruits of their labor.
Have fun and remember that there is no custom recovery yet for these phones nor an SBF file to restore with. You are completely unable to recover your phone at this stage if anything goes wrong that prevents it from booting normally!
The reason we are not going to post the SBF file itself is twofold.
First, they are proprietary Motorola files and we have received C&D orders from Motorola in the past and don't wish to have that happen again here.
Second, these engineering builds are strictly for unsecured development devices and will brick a consumer device if you tried to flash it.
We obviously do not want to see anyone brick their phone especially at this early stage when their is no recourse or means of recovery.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! Nobody is responsible for what you do to your phone except you!

Not that I will know what to do with these files at all, but I am going to keep a copy just in case someone needs to re-upload the files once Moto takes them down.

That is something that applies to HTC with a Nand lock from my understanding.
We don't have a complete picture of the boot process on this device but Motorola does things differently than HTC and on our OMAP/Qualcomm chipset devices there is no SPL involved in the bootchain.

You don't grab it from your phone at all. An SBF file is a proprietary firmware file from Motorola that is flashed with a service ware utility called RSD Lite.
These files are only available to the public via leaks from unofficial sources.
Having a development test phone in this case is a difficult problem unless you have access to internal files for engineering devices.
On another note, I am very surprised that devs are not all over this dump pulling out the framework and libs and apks for use on consumer phones.
There is plenty here that should be able to be safely used.
I am sure that will change once recovery methods have been achieved.

Well, what should we be pulling out? Transplanting 2.3 libs and frameworks into 2.2 isn't a good idea, and if it's just a stock MotoBLUR build for 2.3, then nothing's truly different besides it being Gingerbread. Correct me if I'm wrong, but unless there's something wildly new in this build, it's just another version of what we have?
(I'm newer to Android development, but I know multiple languages (Java, C, C++, Obj-C, etc) and have been hacking/dev'ing for the iPhone since 1.0. Just thought I'd state that so I don't like like a huge idiot if this is extremely useful haha)

you've been pwned sir.
Yup...this is a completely Blurless build and we have one like it for the Droid X as well.
I should caution that some primary functionality appears to be stripped out from the DX build regarding hardware sensors and some other things that are missing entirely.
It's fascinating because it is in many ways what everyone has been whining for since the DX came out with the locked bootloader. It is pure AOSP with virtually no amendments to the libs and very limited or no proprietary Motorola drivers.
There is no WebTop in this build and many other feature again appear to be missing entirely.
So, a very interesting challenge to the developers here to take this mythical beast and turn it into a useable build for consumer hardware by re adding the desired components and shoehorning them back into this build.
Pretty unique opportunity I would say!
Just knowing this file could potentially become a workable 2.3 build for my Atrix makes me VERY excited.
HOPE

OTA update file (4.0.19915 to 4.1.26)

Here is the update that the test phones(4.0.19915 to 4.1.26) received right before the launch of the retail unit. You might think this is useless, but it paints a very clear picture of how Moto updates work on the Atrix.
For each file that is being updated it hash checks and then applies the binary patch. This means changing the file permissions, mounting the system as rw will not cause this to fail as someone else had mentioned before. When it comes time to update, we can extract it and run the patch against the retail dump to create an updated dump.
This also tells us we can use recovery to flash update.zip files, we just need to figure it out. This would be very helpful when creating an updated dump.
This file is downloaded to /cache/tmp. A simple script was used to capture it before it was deleted.
Download the file here:
http://www.ponack.net/designgears/atrix/update.7z
This is very good news.
does this also mean that an OTA can be packaged as a zip and "flashed" to a phone?

[Q] Why does everyone use odin

I understand that Odin is a very, very (let me re-state that), extremely popular method of returning the phone to stock.
However, a small handful of us users don't use Odin. I know I don't, I can't. I run Ubuntu and must use heimdall. So, why not include instructions for heimdall? It runs on windows and linux.
I second this; since heimdall is like custom ROMs "based on samsung/stock but made way better by someone at XDA" And we're starting to see that it works with SGS2 as well(after a tiny id tweak).
Sure it takes a little more understanding to use, but is that really a bad thing?
Plain and simple answer?? People like easy.
Even Odin is too complicated for some of the people here. Idk how many times I've had to describe the difference between odin one click and the full odin. If they can't figure out that if you have to do anything other than hit the start button it's not one click, heimdall will make their brains explode.
Plus throwing another program in there that's even slightly more complicated to a panicked noob who has just (mod edit) his phone up because he didn't know what he was doing would not be the easiest course for the person who is trying help.

What's the difference between one click and full? /sarcasm lol
Think about this:
How many newbs actually attempt to mod their phone with a rom first? I know I didn't, I actually went after rooting my phone first.
I know there's a process for heimdall and odin (one click and full 1.87). After rooting, they start to dabble in roms. Most of which can be installed via odin or heimdall.
So, why not ask those wonderful dev's to post the install info twice(easy odin or more in-depth heimdall). Sorry, I know it's a bit more work, but people that don't have access to odin will be even more greatful (perhaps even get more donations).
Just two more cents added to the thought.

Com'on really?!? Ppl who dont have acces to odin r uber noobs It's all about intrest,if u care about ur phone u'll treat it right by taking less risks with it but unfortunately there r to many noobs who take things 4 granted and make the devs life difficult. The fashion is Odin like it or not u'll have to weare it. Nice thought thou
I'm with op on this. I found heimdall, but couldn't find any stock roms to flash if anything goes bad. I don't have windows, refuse to buy it, and my machine caouldnt run a vm to save its life.
If the devs are too strained for time to make a heimdall post, could they at least make a post that links to a half decent guide?

take your pick of information.
there is the original XDA thread on it, not that informative
there is the official website, has fkn screenshots of the GUI....from that I actually figured out on my own which files it needed
then there is a link to samsunggalaxysforum that has instructions on how to use it...
all found by googling.......remarkable aint it?
Heimdall Guide!!
Lol I was bored so I made a guide!
--> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113195
its just so easy, odin tht is!
Odin and Windows 7
For those using Windows 7 and Odin, here was something I just found out. You need (should) use Windows XP service pack 2 compatibility mode and administrator mode with it. It will stop Factoryfs.rfs from locking up.
Quick Windows lesson: right click on odin, troubleshoot compatibility, "Troubleshoot program",select The program worked in earlier versions of Windows but won't install or run now - next, select Windows XP (Service pack 2), Start program, and follow the rest of the selections to close

There's no need to be an ass about it. This *IS* the q&a part of the forum. You shouldn't expect everyone here to be as fully omnipotent as you seem to think of yourself.
If you dont feel like contributing, you shouldn't be in a forum.
And for your information, It is easy to tell what files are needed, but it is not broadcast to the clouds where to get the correct files. I'm not about to risk downloading just anything to put on my phone. I rely on it too much for that. There's a reason warez aren't allowed here.

cool story bro.
the reason for the sarcasm is that so many people are coming here to get spoonfed the **** that other people learned by doing their own fkn research...all the info is already here in these forums, but so many people are just fkn lazy and its annoying that people get pissed because others dont hand them the fkn info on a silver platter.
Notice I didn't ask to be spoonfed information. I asked where it was. I still haven't found where it tells you to use Odin to flash your phone through heimdall. Just that heimdall is there.
Now pull your head out of your ass and say(type) something useful or ignore the post.
[Note to op, my apologies for hijacking your thread I only intended to further the discussion and share of information]

you DONT USE ODIN!! havent you read a fkn word?
the FILES you need are in the ODIN tar file....
lets just think about this for a damn minute...
HEIMDALL is an opensource version of ODIN meant to be multi platform....so logic says that its going to use the same ODIN files...other wise why make a tool that takes a special set of files that nobody has??
christ, its simple LOGIC here. i know that concept fails so many people....
Ok guys enough. This thread has become bickering back and forth. Please do your research as all the info is there, you just need to find it.

[ASK]Answers to all your questions...!

Hey guys i am starting this thread here as i find there are so many people asking questions and bricking their phones.I just want to help out people and save them from bricking their phones..
i have tried all Froyo based roms available for the captivate.i have good experience in rooting, clockworkmod and flashing roms.I would like to help out all new members here as much possible because just 2 months back i had trouble finding out things...
So what are you guys waiting for ask away....!
P.S:also i kindly request the other senior members and developers here to correct me if i am wrong anywhere and ya i dont want any donations....
Hey, I'm working on something with a similar spirit as this.
A work in progress: self help brick recovery guide
If you would want help out with this. I believe that it could help the q&a and other section of the captivate thread a lot by reducing the number of brick threads
If either of you have experience with web coding, perhaps it would be worthwhile to make up a page that has an interactive checklist of brick steps. Sort of a step-by-step troubleshooter.
For example, the first page could just be the question about whether the phone shows any signs of life at all or not, then have a page with selectable items about the Rom/kernel/modem setup, then move into more specific items.
See the attached zip for what I'm talking about.

Same spirit here mate i am with you lets do it....!
But i will be focussing on problems of members other than bricking and also i believe prevention would be better than cure....!

I saw the zip and got what you are saying i liked it. I have a decent hold over html & java so i must be able to create that....!
But i will need space to host it....!
Perhaps in lieu of hosting space, save it as an all-in-one zip file and post it on here. You wouldn't need a large amount additional space (I assume) as there probably wouldn't be a huge need for images. If that's the case, it would be all text, which should be fairly small.

true it wont be a big zip file......!
I will create it and post it here
Wow jmtheiss you took my idea to the next level, i never though of making it interactive. But that my be the key that really will make it work.
sorry adicool I'm no good with HTML or coding i will have to leave that to you. But I have a knack for graphic design. Plus I can find and collect the images that could be use as examples (ex. like a soft brick screen)

Looks good to me. Clean, simple, easy to follow.
A good starting point, if you need any help feel free to ask.
Thought here: The one package is good. I'm also thing that we can have each section posted package as a separate package too (along with the whole package). So those who only need one thing like rooting the can just download that section
Hi! I'm new to the forums and need some help. I have stock I897UCKB1, sucessfully rooted and unlocked it. I would like to try out some ROMs, CM7 first. How should i start? I assume i have Eclair/Froyo bootloaders, right? I've installed ROM Manager Premium, clicked flash clockworkmod, and to reboot to recovery but it's only stock recovery. How should i proceed? Also i need some enlightment on bootloaders: if i flash the newest GB ATT bootloaders will every ROM work with it? Thanks in advance!
Go to the general section, there is a thread called "sticky roll-up" in there is a link to a thread called "e: signature verification failed" that is the work around you need for cwm (or any zip) to flash
Or you can flash a froyo kernel that has cwm baked in with odin like speedmod...
I wouldn't mess with bootloaders st this point in your flashing experience that its the only time you risk a real hard brick do leave those alone until you know for sure what you're doing.
I totally forgot about muse, so here's my on take of the guide.

I would advice you to first try flashing a few froyo based roms just to gain experience in flashing after that you can move over to GB
as told by my friends here there is a thread here that fixes that cwm problem .!
If you still need help or cant find it do post here and i would be more than happy to help...!whatever you do just dont mess with bootloaders atm as they can cause your device to be bricked...
I would say start off first by flashing cognition 4.5.3....!

dreamweaver would be great but my current computer wouldn't be able to handle it and i dont have the money for it. muse is free until the final product is done that why im using it.
