"Checking the information on your device" - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

I just tried to upgrade my MDA III to a new official ROM. I had done this last year already but after restoring a few wrong backups, the need arose to re-upgrade the ROM.
I followed the instructions but the upgrade process hung shortly after starting it while a window on the PC screen displayed "Checking the information on your device" while on my PDA's screen it said "USB" and "v2.05". I let it sit for 30 minutes, but nothing happened. I checked the internet for a solution but didn't find any. Apparently more people had the same problem, but nobody found a true solution for this problem or what was causing it. I then called T-Mobile's repair service and they told me you shouldn't see that screen for longer than 2 minutes so my MDA III was probably defective and needed to be repaired.
I did not accept that as an answer; my MDA was still responsive. If I resetted it, the display would show "Serial" and as soon as I put it in its cradle, the display changed to "USB". It didn't seem broken at all, but no matter what I tried, I could not get past the "Checking the information on your device".
Then I started thinking why it would hang there and what it might be doing. I figured, what if it's going through all stored data in storage memory and the SD card in search for the "information" it is mentioning? I have a 4Gb SD card in my PDA and transferring 4Gb over USB takes, well, for ever. So I removed the SD card and tried the upgrade again. And I was right. This time it immediately continued the upgrading process after briefly showing the "Checking the information on your device" window.
So if you do an upgrade, remove your SD card!
Just thought I'd share in case others encounter the same problem.

Omg! It works!! THANK YOU very very MUCH for posting this!!!

Messenger wont open!

This is the second time this has happened and I cant figure it out. I was running the 2.17 rom the first time. Then I now have Shoguns new beta rom and same thing has happened. I cant text or anything including mms, but that has never worked since I got this phone. When you try to open it nothing happens at all, like it ignores you or something. Other than that and the bluetooth not working anymore its all good.
Any ideas before doing another hard reset?

what all apps have you installed since installing the roms?
I installed all the apps on the ext rom installer but this happened before those were installed. The only programs I can think of that are the same is Opera, Total Commander, and tcpmp. If it helps any I was messing around with Omap trying to see if I could squeeze out a few more mhz and I froze it up. Come to think of it I cant soft reset unless the storage card is removed or else it will freeze on the omap program. Anyways I dont see how the entire messenging program stopped working. Any way this could be related?
DAVE
Just in case anybody cares about this thread I found out some strange info. With the storage card out everything works again. Put it back in and its all messed up. Also I cannot boot it up with the card in the phone anymore it hangs on the omap screen. Any way to make that screen not come up everytime? I couldve sworn it didnt used to pop up everytime I rebooted before. Card is not bad it works fine. I wonder if the program that turns the phone into a card reader has something to do with it?
Dave
Happen to me few time. Just start messanger from startup menu and it will work again.
I have had a similar problem with Messaging. Usually it works fine, but sometimes nothing will open Messaging will not open with any method, from the Today Screen item (it highlights, but never opens), the Mail buttonhas no effect, and the Start menu item has no effect. I found that deleting the Inbox.mstxxxxxx folder from the storage card would allow it to open again. Also, the phone would not see the MiniSD card, and create a "Storage Card" folder then the real storage card would be called "Storage Card 2" and that would also cause Messanger problems. This has happened in the past on this phone as well, without any custom ROMs and with multiple MiniSD cards. I took out a reg hack to show the ext ROM in the file system and it seemed to help the problem.
Just FYI this is on an 8125 with a SanDisk 1gb MiniSD card and Shoguns current public ROM and the 2.47.11 radio.
I ended up doing the hard reset anyways, but its good to know there may be a fix for this. I did see the files but they would not open and said the program was missiing or something like that. Its all good now thouugh, but thanks for the info. Im sure itll happen again.

Stuck after ROM flash:error 206

I decided to reflash my wizard after it continually getting slower and slower after a year. I haven't done it in awhile. It is already unlocked. I flashed the 1.05 rom and it was working. I was going to go up in steps ending with the touch rom. I flashed the wrong rom evidently and now am downgraded to 1.01 on spl/ipl and os 2.26.10.2. The wizard won't activate Activesync and I can't get any communication. I tried rebooting the pc and the wizard multiple times. Still nothing. Need something quick to fix this. Everytime I tried to launch a rom flash I get an error 206.

If it was already CID unlocked, there was no need to downgrade again 1.05,once CID unlocked will remain unlocked forever, unless you intentionally don't flash back the locking code back on to it.
Now try to get into Bootloaders (multicolor screen) hook up the phone with pc via usb cable and check small usb appear at the bottom of the bootloaders,if it appears then download the official stock rom and flash to recover back to the default status, then download the WST 4.2.2 tool and run the 'CID Action' button to verify the CID lock/unlock status of the phone.if its still CID unlocked then upgrade to any wm6 rom of your choice, otherwise perform the unlocking method again. If the usb doesn't appear, then you have a connectivity problem, check the usb cable or the mini usb port of the phone is faulty.Assuming you are doing on winXP.
"and check small usb appear at the bottom of the bootloaders..."
I don't understand what your talking about when you say bootloader. The bootloader is the ROM installation program is it not. How do you check an icon in that? If you mean system trays on the PC or PDA, no USB icon shows. I got no radio or sync services working. The OS is corrupted and operates extremely slow. I can't get any kind of communication between the PDA and PC. Not even through windows explorer (running XP). It's not the cable, I just used it to downgrade to 1.05 and it was working fine. It wasn't until I tried to upgrade to back up, and selected the wrong ROM off my USB storage, that it flashed the wrong ROM and caused all this. Mostly because I hate trying to remember what the longs string of digits mean on each ROM. Especially after I haven't looked at all the files and haven't done a flash in a year.
So no communication. That's the issue.
So does anyone else have any info? As I stated, I can't get any communication between the MDA and the PC. So I don't know how I can flash a stable ROM.
I repeat again,Get the phone in Bootloaders mode (multicolor screen) by pressing and keep holding down the camera button and at the same time either 'Soft Reset' or 'Power On' the phone, but keep holding down the camera button, till phone boots up in Bootloaders mode(multicolor screen),hook up the phone with pc via usb cable and check if small usb appears "At the bottom of the Bootloaders Screen" and not in the system tray of the pc. If it appears then follow the advise I gave you in my above post, but if doesn't appear then you have a connectivity problem.

The Wiki as all the (basic) info to get you started.
It doesn't work
I can get into Bootloaders mode with usb at the bottom. BUT, I can't get any connection to ActiveSync, any of the ROM update utilities and no radio network connections. That was the specific thing I'm telling you. If the Desktop and the PDA won't talk to each other, what am I gonna do? It's not the cable either. The Wizard Tool will not pick it up either when I used it to try to get device info. If your going suggest any kind of ROM or software off the forum, please specify exact version and title so I don't have to go through 100+ pages doing a search to find a specific piece of software off a vague title such as "stock ROM". You may know what it means because your always on the forum. When someone hasn't been back here in awhile they aren't going to remember some arbitrary string of numbers and letters indicating a certain ROM that they haven't used for a year. Too many of you "regulars" get all pissy about things when someone asks a question. If someone keeps asking the same questions, it's because the forum is NOT laid out in an easily searchable fashion unless you have specific search criteria for things such as CUSTOM_RUU_Wizard_1050412_WWE_10111210_WWE instead of "stock ROM".
Have you read the Wiki?
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Wizard Windows Mobile 6 for newbies
Or other posts?
You'd know by now that in bootloader mode ActiveSync or any other tool (that uses ActiveSync) can't communicate with the phone but that it's possible to upgrade a ROM using the official upgrade utilities.
Have you tried making a search and getting hundreds of undesired and repeated posts which makes you lose days searching for a specific thing?
If you'd been here as long as many of us you'd also be tired of people asking same questions. I was once a fresh member and i would always 'waste' my time than others'.
Also the forum search feature has been enhanced by using Google's search engine instead of internal.
There is simply no way I can express my deep and sincere gratitude for the information available in this forum. Let me explain and I think you may understand why.
Several days ago my wife and I received a couple of HTC 8125's from Ebay. Being a tinkerer I wanted to see what I could do so I upgraded mine to Mobile 6 with Touch-Flo.
The wife was skeptical and waited to see how it worked out. Of course she eventually decided to go for the Bling and handed me hers to upgrade as well.
As soon as the upgrade started on hers the pda went bootscreen and locked up. Sooooo I'm sweating bullets and searching the forums as fast as I can go before she finds out. Then I find this thread and the last post... Don't need Activesync to update as long as the device pops up a little usb on the screen when you plug up... I flashed the 8125 upgrade and *Bang*! Back in business. Continued the upgrade and all is well. The wife is now walking around with her "Bling" and happy and I am off the hook!
Thanks for the GREAT FORUM!

Unlocking Trinity in Vista or mini-SD

Hey folks,
I've tried several things after reading several threads, and have managed to not brick my phone so far, but not unlock it either. I'm aiming to only do the second without doing the first...
As I'm using Vista, I'm having no success using HTC_Trinity_SIM_CID_Unlock_v1 through the Windows Mobile Device Manager. Am I going to be able to do this using my mini-SD card?
I've tried to think it through, but would favour someone else's opinion before I do it.
If I was to put SSPL-Trin.exe into my Trinity memory, then rename TRINunlockv1.nbh to TRINimg.nhb and put that on my mini SD-card, and add Trin_Unlock_v1 to the card, ran SSPL_Trin.exe then put the memory card into the slot, would that solve anything? Or are there better ways to do it?
Any advice gratefully received.
I'm really struggling here guys... Whenever I manage to get any form of SPL open, with the fancy triband of red, green, blue (and a white band underneath), it doesn't allow me to do anything. It just sits there reading "TRIN100 IPL-0.50" or "TRIN100 IPL-SSPL by Des" (depending on how I get there) in the top of the red band, and underneath that it says "TRIN100 SPL-1.07.0000". At the bottom of the screen, in the white band, it reads either "USB" or "Serial" depending on whether the USB is plugged in or not.
I had the RUU in the root directory of my mini-SD card, and nothing happened. When I tried running it remotely from my PC, the same thing happened, but as it went into the SPL screen, Vista stopped detecting my trinity as a device.
Any hints or clues how to get further into the SPL. Is there something I need to do when I get to the triband screen? AARRGGHH!!
Mine's an Orange SPV m700, to which I've done nothing before now. (So Operator version 19.123.1.615, ROM verstion 1.23.61.5, ROM date 01/25/07, Radio version 1.30.00.01 and Protocol version 32.63.7020.08H)

Could you please tell me what kind of sd do you have? is it a micro sd plugged to a mini sd adapter, and what capacity?
I won't ask you if you formatted the card as FAT32 and with no label.
Please try to install Olios's hardspl_120 :
first boot om WM5, copy SSPL-TRIN.exe and the hard-spl nbh that is renamed to trinimg.nbh, and run SSPL-TRIN.exe, that will get you in the famous tricoloured screen and you will see a white screen with procesing and then with checking and after this it will prompt you to push the power button to start upgrade.
good luck!
Mini-SD is an Integral 2GB card, actual Mini-SD, not a conversion... Just triple checked, and it is Fat32 and unlabled (which I thought is what I had, so I'm not going mad). I've tried flashing using Vista Sync Centre without the mini-SD in place, but that hasn't helped either.
Olipros Hard-SPL is the one I've been trying to install, but when I get to the triband screen, it flashes very quickly to a white screen (for about a tenth of a second) and then just stays on the triband screen... It doesn't give me an option to hit the power button to start an install.
I'm going to try to download another version of TRIN-SPL or something similar, as I can't get in to the bootloader screen to do anything.

Actually for flashing you will need a card in the pda. One more thing, after you try to flash from your SD card, and you end up in the tri-band screen, could you check if have a temporary folder on the card, i can't remember the name, and for me that was i confirmation that the trin actually tried to read the cad.
I had a 8g card, that was not recognized, and i tried with the original 512m card.
So please do not despair, at the end you will managed to do it.
Interesting - it's still not going from the triband screen into the processing screen, and it doesn't seem to be accessing the card when it enters SSPL-TRIN. Guess it's a case of either getting a new mini-SD card (probably a sandisk one), or going the IMEI route to unlocking. Don't really want to go that way, but it should just work. I'm pretty sure that was the card I got with the phone, and as it was 2GB I didn't bother getting another at the time...
Is there anything wrong with using IMEI unlock, other than it being lazy and not allowing me to have as much fun updating my phone? Thanks for all the advice so far.
Just a thought - is there some way I can change the boot order of the Trin? Just thinking Windows and the way you can change the boot order from hard drive to CD or DVD etc...

O2 XDA Stellar: Booting problem following Windows Live install

Hi guys, need your help.
Short version:
i own the XDA Stellar, running vanilla WM6.0. tried to install Windows Live but had to soft reset before it ended. now stuck at the green boot screen.
what besides hard reseting can i do? i don't mind breaking the device if i have to, but i want my data back. particularly my text messages. everything else that i need is backed up.
while am on the green boot screen, if i receive an sms, the phone actually rings. but thats basically all it does. when i connect the USB to my computer, nothing pops up.
anyway i can get access to the files directory?
what i've tried:
- soft reseting a number of times
- remove SD card
- removing sim card
- removing Battery for a couple of minutes before putting it back in
- connecting USB cable. "nothing pops-up on computer"
- SMSing it. "it rings"
- pressing all buttons on surface of device.
no success
thanks for any help
Long version:
i own the XDA Stellar, running vanilla 6.0. today i downloaded Windows Live for windows mobile to update the one i already had on my device. while it was installing before it reached the end, i got a pop-up telling me that i was running out of space. and it just stayed like that, progress bar wouldn't move. so i went to the device deleted a couple of pictures and tried to cut/paste the voice notes from device to storage card. it refused to allow it. so i decided to soft reset.
when i did soft reset, it got to the green boot screen and is stuck there.
after along wait, i get a white screen telling me the device can't boot because i might have "turned off the device incorrectly" or installed an insecure software and that my only option is to hard reset and lose everything.
while am on the green boot screen, if i receive an sms, the phone actually rings. but thats basically all it does. when i connect the USB to my computer, nothing pops up.
anyway i can get access to the files directory?
Thanks
And no mention of a Hard-Reset?
are you saying that there is absolutely no way to read the memory on the phone beside doing it when the WinMobile OS is running right?
that sounds like a completely stupid design. its like having windows without a start disk that gives you access to a command prompt.
having to lose all your data over some OS data corruption is ridiculous
i would really appreciate it if anyone knows a way, even an expensive one.
i just had text messages from someone dear to me that passed away that i'd rather not lose.
thank you
Some other things to try
Yes you can check whether the sms messages are stored on the sim card (by putting it in another phone/using a sim card reader). On my TyTN II, the SMS Messages are stored there and it's only emails that use phone or memory card memory. You could also try removing the Sim before booting (one thing not on your 'tried' list but if all this fails, the only other thing I can think of short of a hard reset, is contacting Microsoft about their Windows Live software. There's a website for support of these products and Microsoft staff will actually get back to you (I had need to contact them over a bug in the email portion of their software some time ago). Best wishes
seeing as i have over 2000+ messages in there, i don't think the sim card could actually help me in this case.
but thanks anyway
i still can't believe they made a phone with a memory that could only be accessed through the OS

Including any additional way of accessing it uses up more storage memory for the relevant program and on a mobile device (unlike a desktop PC), that's very valuable space. Maybe some of your sms messages (the most important ones) may be on the sim - you have little to loose by checking. What about trying to boot it without the sim card in or contacting Microsoft as I mentioned? Not all your options have run out yet but you seem to write as if they are....

@Flying Kiwi
thanks for replying. i actually did try to boot it without the sim card after you suggested it. it didn't work.
and with regards to contacting Microsoft, i'll give that a go but i doubt they'll be able to help if people here can't. as we all know, XDA Developers kick ass.
with regards to checking the sim for the messages, i don't have a spare phone to try it on just now, and if i remember correctly, sim cards don't usually hold more then 15 text, though i might be wrong.
the thing is, the fact that my phone still rings when it receives a messages, kinda makes me think the OS is partially loading. i was hoping someone could suggest a way for me to force enough of it on to reach my files..
am starting to lose hope.. *sigh*
am really thankful to the people who have replied so far.
P.S. oh yeah, Flying Kiwi, could you give me a link to the WM6 support page that where people actually reply to you since i can't find any support besides that to MSDN account holders, either that or paying £200 for one single phone call that last upto 8 hours at which point it could just end up with them just telling me to hard reset. thanks
can anyone help me out here? anyone with a link or an email address i can get support from Microsoft for WM6?
i have a similar problem, is there anyway to get data from phone if the OS is corrupt and the system is stuck at the green bootup screen?
please say yes.

[Q] Trying to unbrick Kaiser

Hi All,
I've been running the Orange (UK) WM6.1 ROM for months/years without problems and was messing around with some texts and somewhere along the line I have ended up with the standard 4 stripes down the screen and some text top left.
I have scanned the forums here and the wiki and they suggest connecting using USB and running Mtty.exe, however whilst I can connect the phone using USB Activesync won't recognise it and then I get an error from Mtty.exe because it won't recognise the phone.
I have also tried re-intalling the Orange ROM as well as newer roms, but none of them seem to be able to connect to the phone.
Active sync doesn't seem to be able to connect on Win 7 or Win XP despite them syncing fine this morning.
So, any suggestions out there?
I'll do some more searching, but any pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Try a new USB cable, I went through 5 in one year, or try flashing via SD card.
Well I tried a couple of different leads and no luck.
I did manage to get some info from mtty.exe, but didn't make sense.
I took my SIM out to use in another phone and having left the battery out for a while, put it back in to try again at getting it to start and it booted fine without any problems.
After a bit of messing around it seems like that the boot problem is either down to a problem with the SD card, SIM or a foreign object in phones casing.
I keep the phone in a pocket of my overals that I use a workshop and occasionally iron filings from a grinder can get into it's working, which is what I think has happened.
ANyway, it's back and working again, only need to keep it going until Orange can get some Desire HDs in
Hi!
Read those threads again, the solution is there.
1.Disable USB connections in Activesync menu (right click on green icon on the tray)-->connection settings-->untick "Allow USB connections"
2.Put your device in bootloader mode (yours is in it)
3.Start to connect it with MTTY to do what you want or just run an official Orange UK ROM update
If everything is fine, your device will be alive again.
After that install Hard-SPL to avoid problems like this.
BR
Scootie
P.S.:Sorry,I didn't read post #3,but it can be useful later.
One more tip:check the camera button.
Thanks Scootie,
I'll try the Hard-SPL thing - the jumping into boot loader seems pretty random, has happened a couple more times and I find I have to pull the battery for several minutes and then try a restart.
The camera button doesn't seem to do much other than what it is supposed to.
Pretty annoying since I have had the phone for 3 years, but have not had signal at home so hardly use it, and now we have signal due to Orange/T-Mobile merger from the beginning of the month the phone fails me :-(
