My new PC desktop - Off-topic

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Sqgyid6gww
Yeah I know, anyone can do it, it's not new, or amazing (ok it is amazing) but I only just installed it and configured it to my liking!
Too many of the videos of Beryl interfaces I have seen go way overboard on the effects, I think mine is subtle enough not to look tacky, but remain a nice bit of eye candy

Hehe, yeah I know what you mean.
Visually it's stunning, I only wish that there were a few more thing I use on Windows that worked on Linux, although I love Vista, so I'm not sure I could make the switch, and having two machines side by side, I don't need to!

iSwish - "iPhoneish interface"

Just saw this on Engadget, and figured everyone here will be interested in this. A swiss company made a user interface for all WM devices that emulates the look and feel of the iPhone interface. This company also tried to add "multitouch-ish" functions to the WM devices by simulating multi touch features while displaying photos and web pages. .
Looks pretty cool so far and it has potential. The article states that it will be available for download in May.
Engadget article:

I am currently using SPB Mobile Shell but am willing to check out all other UI apps out there and this one looks promising.
looks very good. hope this will commin soon for us
its best iphone copy i´ve ever see
cant wait it
Looks good actually. I'll be keeping a watch on them as well as here for a download.
iZoom looks promising as well, even if Swish isn't available when Zoom is released.
This look sick , very sick. Ive never seen any iphone clone this much fluidy
Looks cool; see here http://www.flicksoftware.com/research/index_files/Page350.htm for details about joining the beta....
this looks cool, got myself on the beta when i saw the engadet post
hmm..reminds me of the Freestyl application that I really didnt like. Hopefully this one is much better. Going to try it out.
Update 03/May/2008:
We would like to thank everyone for their support and for Joining our Beta program. We have received over 2000 requests and we will be breaking them into 3 tiers with an increasing number of Beta tester in each one. The tier 1 will be selected late this week and will only be about 10 people, if things go well then late the following week we will expand to 100 and before months end over 1000.
Lastly to answer the number one question we have had, yes we do plan to start testing the iSwish development kit in the next 30 days. This will allow any designer to add iswish capabilities to their own windows mobile/PPC/CE applications. If you are a developer and interested in beta testing this please e-mail us at “[email protected]” with the subject “iSiwsh development environment Beta” and your company, name and current development environment.

True with iZoom...dualtouch is now possible on a singletouch interface. Look at the youtube video just above my post...they even installed dualtouch on a 6yr old device.
I guess it's a kind of dualtouch, though it seems that one point has to remain fixed when in this mode. Still could be quite useful I'm sure.
Looks promising but overall I think the idea is silly - I would of just bought an iPhone

ok so just by one then...
you will end up with no GPS, MMS, Video recording, Bluetooth, SD slot, 3G etc etc etc
you will have a phone with a nice screen...thats is...I like the iphone but I dont like the actual phone....feel me ?
Exactly. The iPhone is nice looking, smooth, sleek and shiny, the Kaiser is big heavy and some have said ugly. But compare the features. The iPhone is a million miles away.
I briefly considered the iPhone before I got my Kaiser and I made the right choice. The clincher for me was the commercialism surrounding the iPhone. Too many people have jumped on the bandwagon and it's just not that cool anymore. Personally I don't think it ever was - a phone for show-offs who just want to impress people. The Kaiser is different. It may not look the best and the WM interface may not be to everybody's liking. But it can be a SatNav or a GameBoy, a notepad or a Webcam. The possiblilities are almost endless. And if you really can't live without the iPhone's inteface, you don't have to look far to get something similar, or even better.
Anyway, off topic, but that's my rant. I feel better now...

I agree completely, but after buying an iPhone and using it for a week or so, I really loved the interface. I love the screen and how easy it is to navigate through everything. The browser is ten times better than PIE, and although you can get Opera or Skyfire, on the 2.8" screen they are still really difficult to use. In the end I chose to keep my kaiser over the iphone because I couldn't get used to typing without a hardware keyboard, but in all honesty I really loved the iphone interface.

Hello Beta Tester,
We will have an update for you later this week on iSwish, but I thought I would point you all to the new video one of our developers posted last night showcasing the iZoom in full multi-touch with an interesting twist at the end. There was a measure of disbelief in its authenticity, so we hope this clears that up.

Palm Pre

Makes Windows Mobile look like it's from the dark ages:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/08/palm-pre-in-depth-impressions-video-and-huge-hands-on-gallery/
I know! It looks amazing! Except the fact that it's stuck between qvga and vga :| Love the wireless charging though! The new OS looks sick! WM7 should be better than that or I'll hate M$ more than I do already.
Now that looks interesting! Going to have to keep an eye on this one...
The Pre looks amazing. It's small, looks great (especially the OS) AND has a physical keyboard. The only thing that's not so great is the screen resolution.
And I agree with the OP, it makes WM 6.1 look very outdated :/

I think that Microsoft is begining to make the same mistake that Palm did, in allowing their OS to grow stagnant. Palm waited forever to finaly update the OS (is this a new Palm OS? I could be wrong), and MS seems to be doing the same in taking forever to get WM7 out.
Hopefully WM7 will be worth the wait like this new Palm phone seems to have been.

The Palm CEO said this is only the first device to run this OS, so if it's success, I'd expected to see devices with higher resolution.
Windows Mobile 7 better be amazing!
...sigh...no GSM love for U.S. users...

palm...
this is the first time in my life that I have looked at a palm and was actually shocked and blown away
now that is innovative
and for kicks I googled windows mobile 7 for CES and so far I have heard a lot about windows 7, but very little about its mobile equivalent. Not good microsoft
This blows any phone OS....have you seen the Task Manager...Genius ! They have turned something ordinary into a delight.
I think WM7 is going to take forever to come out.

I think they are drinking a lot of strong spirits over at Windows Mobile at the moment. The beauty is that palm are still tweaking it and it was so fast on the videos already.

^^ Thanks for the link, great find!
I love WinMo, and have never been impressed by iPhone or Blackberry. Palm's new OS is a great balance between functionality and a delightful UI. Hell, it's not a balance, it's the best of both worlds!
Kudos to Palm. I finally see a smartphone I want since my Blue Angel flew away, and it's not an HTC phone.
Looks good but I hope it's easy to say port apps from android otherwise it's going to be a pita having 4 seperate operating systems on a mobile (android, wm, osx and now palm (again))
The nice thing too is it seems the whole thing is written in very simple coding language. With the very blank "desktop" location and the different possabilities of adding "toolbars" in and above the "Dock" we may have an OS that has the versitility for customization that Windows Mobile gives with the finger focused aesthetically pleasing UI of the iPhone and the focus on simplicity and intuitive use that the old Palm OS focused on.
my next phone
The UI is everything I wanted from a mobile phone platform; the actual hardware is everything I wanted in a mobile phone. It's nothing short of brilliant.
This is one of the best reviews of the Palm Web OS. Detailed descriptions on how the system workd on Palm's new Pre. They even have the official video form Palm's press event.
http://www.mytechwall.com/?p=171
very cool device,................
good phone ...bad timing....and maybe a little too late. If it has a ridiculous price tag on it then palm would have a really hard time selling these in this economy.
I found another video the explains alittle more about the OS. I like the part towards the end of the video.

6.5 honeycomb is dead!

Hi guys... if you're interested in the further developments of WinMo 6.5, check out this little item I found over at WM Power Users... the honeycomb is no more after negative feedback!
What are your thoughts on this?
not really dead, just no outline.I think it looks even better now
I kinda liked the honeycomb outlines. Though, without them, they can now have bigger and more finger friendly icons, which is good. But still, I think it looked better with the outlines tbh.
never understood why they had to be in a honeycomb tbh
prefer the way it's done on the TP2 manila

It's to maximize the usage of the screen, so more icons at a bigger scale can be put in.
Honeycombs and Peacocks, what where they thinking of??
I´m glad the Honeycombs are gone.
That was the most terrible presentation ever. So many things lagged...websites still detected IE as a mobile browser because its core is still IE6... And many things didnt even work. He couldnt go on the flash site first, it went to a blank screen, then once he went to YouTube, he didnt launch a video, because that **** is slowww...those animations he showed, were lagging like a muthafucka, and when he talked about new features, he constantly said "i believe" as if he doesnt know what the hell it does...so sad...soooo sad

Not sure I agree with you there. I thought the presentation was pretty good except a few things. And he did say the reason internet lagged was 'cause of the bad connection. +Most people wont even open IE once, since Opera is waaaay nicer.

Well if you noticed earlier before he got into the browser, he has FULL HSDPA BARS...if it was spotty, then it would be few bars, and switch over to EDGE, but he had stable FULL BARS...During the presentation, on the slides of the powerpoint, some text was under a chart...thats just not professional...seems like MS is dicking around...
It's just sad how MS always has to play catchup with the mobile market..nothing was innovative, and when they try to be innovative (flash browser for example) it does not work well enough to actually demo it

And one thing I can't understand is why they dont take inspiration/help from all the great developers for example from here.
Hehe, about that presentation, did you notice he said "We didnt think of businiess people as customers, which we do now." well.. duh!

Why doesn't wm6.5 have cool animations like minimizing animations like the iphone!!!?

can anybody come up with animations for htc touch pro running wm6.5
Why doesn't the iphone have a physical keyboard like the touch pro !!!?
because it's not an iphone. If you want cool minimizing animations get an iPhone. If you want productivity keep the TP

Why can't i pay $70 a month for tethering like on the iphone when i have to pay $0 on the touch pro..... some things in life aren't fair for everything else theres Steve errr Apple - http://i.gizmodo.com/5285898/bart-tears-down-dvd-jons-apple+baiting-doubletwist-ad
the iphone's a great piece of machinery and there's no denying it, but if people want something to be like an iphone than get the real thing. i hate these iphone themes and wannabe applications, so i say skip the damn aspirations to be iphone-like, or to be as cool and unique as the other millions and millions of iphone users
xda fits more for hardcore users, not sheep
Why do you all keep putting down the iphone and flaming about it when that wasn't the question? I'm also someone who likes the animations that phones like the iPhone and Palm Pre have and would love to get them on wm6.5. If the iphone had a keyboard and was on verizon, i would've went straight for it. We already know that the iphone doesn't have a keyboard and costs $75 a month so what's the point of writing that? No one's asking to turn their htc into an iphone or even copy the interface, it's just a simple question. If you don't know the answer, don't waste everyon'e time by ranting about the iphone's faults. I'd settle for just animations whether they look like the iphone/palm pre or not. It makes rotating the phone or going back to the home screen look much smoother.
Anyway, i have a question that ACTUALLY pertains to this topic. Is there a way to get the accelerometer effects like the omnia/iphone/palm pre or like Opera 9.7 when the device is turned? I like how the page kind of flips when it's rotating.
I feel for you :] I like some animations like that as well.
Granted, I'm an avid iPhone basher also, but I do like 2 things about it, and one is the animations and visual effects.
...the other is the capacitive touch screen. But, hey, they can't use their phone with a glove on. ;]
thank u! u understand what am saying i love my htc but **** come with some cool animations that all am saying!!
Wouldn't it be possible to design a Flash based menu system?
EDIT:
http://www.downloadsquad.com/2007/1...comes-freestyl-windows-mobile-program-launch/
some iphone interfaces do have animations
and if you want the palm pre interface for opening apps that are up you can combine butler with taskfacade. both which were out before web os was announced
butler turns your capacitive area into an app launcher
and taskfacade can be mapped to one of the areas and it will animate zooming out of the app and show all that are open. pretty snazzy

Do you also believe that if you want to edit video and photos, you need to get a Mac....If you're going to set up a file server, set up a linux box....and if you're going to type up a report for your boss, you need to have windows? I'm pretty sure all three OS's can accomplish each of those tasks, even if one may have a slight edge on another (even if only by stereotype). If everybody thought like that, there wouldn't even be standard Desktop Linux users.
The notion of having some animation on the screen shouldn't be limited to a few specific handsets. We have the technology, we just have to make it work the way we want.

I agree to an extent, I think those mock iPhone apps are useless, but that's because I think the iPhone interface is useless. I prefer to think those apps exist for another reason...to show iPhone users that there's nothing special or cool about their phone. I like being able to say, "I can do everything your phone can, but can your phone do this?" At that point, I can show off the other home screens, interfaces, and tools that they can never aspire towards because of the mountains of limits put on their phones.
The home screen on the iPhone sucks, we all know this...but it's made cool to the millions because of a few simple animations. The complainers on this thread are ignoring how much more appeal can be gained with such small improvements. Just think about the incredibly simple animations they use, and how easy some of them would be to duplicate (or improve upon).
Alright, I've probably said too much...I'll go sit down and shut up...

very well said. i feel the same way and think that the touch pro definately has the specs to be able to do simple animations like fading in and out of applications. im kind of glad the iphone's home screen is just a boring app launcher. Now if it was able to run plug ins like tf3d and spb mobile shell, windows mobile may be in trouble
why is the iphone mentioned here? the iphone has over (IDK) generations and they all look alike nothing different and just plain boring, i mean it has one main button and the apps are just lined up! "TALK ABOUT A BORING UI"
If you really want animations, you sadly need to look for 3rd party software. Who knows maybe it'll be built into WinMo 7 but for the time being, cool "Iphone-esque" animations can be acquired by using SPB mobile shell. It doesn't necissarily have the same sliding animations, but it does give you a carosel(sp) and shifting block menu animations. Sorry I can't post screen shots, I just recently removed it cuz I couldn't get the weather to work right LOL. But aside from that... You can take one or the other and at the risk of sounding overly cliched, you can't have your cake and eat it....
On a side note... We were having Palm Pre training, and my trainer was bashing the Iphone left n right. It was actually pretty funny. He referred to it as "nothing more than a glorified paperweight for the A.D.D. generation incapable of performing any task without the use of an application". I felt pretty stupid tho cuz half of the applications he was talking about I have on my Touch Pro. Hehehe....

I've used SPB for some time now on my Loox and I enjoy it very much. The new 3.0 is a great piece of work but like you mentioned it is still buggy.... The thing that gets me are the graphics! Why don't they develop skins for the shell??? You, I, he, they all have different likes and dislikes and ideas on how our systems should look and feel. If SPB would design a more user friendly version of the Shell it would definitely end up on everybodys mobile.

why on earth would I want something like that? so I can slow down my ppc? so I can be kewl n l33t like the iphone people? if I wanted all that crap, I woulda got an iphone like my wife. I wanted something a little more tweakable and something I could play with.. not a shiny thing for status.

The Market

So please tell me, I am not the only one who hates the new market. I hate the layout, the buttons, the movie rentals? Really? Does no one take pride in movie watching anymore, popcorn, soda, snuggling? Now it's smudge marks, small screen, and squinting. I don't need movies, I have a tv. Traveling, I have a laptop, or a portable dvd player. Technology is great, but honestly, lets scale it back a bit. Or if we are gonna go rental crazy, can we charge a little less. Hell, I can go rent a dumb movie for a buck, outside of McD's, but I can watch that on a real screen. Don't give me that HDMI crap either... there is no point to a mini HDMI cable to link to your tv. If you have an HD tv, 85% chance you have a Wii or a PS3, which means you have a dish, or cable, which means you have a box, which means you can rent. Or go to Family Video for crying out loud!!! We would love to help you pick out your movie for the evening, we got mad skills there.
But seriously, the new market sucks.
hmm
Hmm, if you is talking about the new android market, i would say you is completely right. The new market are too munch like win7phone. and the old market where munch better
At first, I liked the new market, now after time with it, it's too cluttered.
I have a mixed reaction to it, it's easier to find useful apps but the layout is otherwise far too busy. I prefer a more minimalist aesthetic.
The home page is not the best, for sure. The actual pages for apps I like better. I'm sure they will hear the suggestions and make it less cluttered. But the idea is there to make it more modern. I am running a honeycomb theme in my room and it fits really nice.

Lol. You just cant help yourself can you?
I believe movie rentals are more for tablets than phones. Also, TV series can be good for watching even on a phone (like on a train to work).
I also prefer big screen, but you know what? I don't mind features, even if I don't use them. Someone will and we don't have to anyway, so let's quit complaining.
fpu
New Market is very nice
I think the new market is faster and it's enough for me
i think it sucks ... totally cluttered, way too many useless applications, and of course the search is bad, it doesn't work very well. I'd have expected more from google.
I agree hax1.
The search is so bad... and google is a search [based] giant!
