Best Pocket Pc in USA? - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

Friends,
I broke my BA LCD screen today. I am thinking of buying new PPC. What is the best PPC available in USA.
Thanks

Go for HTC Shift
wait until HTC shift arrives, or search whether it has already arrived in yr town.
its the new umpc by HTC and will have gprs/gsm/edge/etc.... all the services available with windows vista.
see this....... http://www.htc.com/

HTC Advantage
I would recommend the HTC Advantage (X7501) if you've got high budget and don't mind a device with a slightly larger form factor (5" screen). It's loaded with features.
If you want a smaller truly pocket device then there are alternatives. See my list of VGA Pocket PCs here: http://kripster.blogspot.com/2007/05/vga-pocket-pc-roundup-ver-5.html. It's a UK based list but should give you a good starting point.

HTC Shift

I have been looking at the specs of the HTC Advantage and the HTC Shift. Personally the HTC Shift looks like a much better unit. Does anyone have any additional info on the HTC Shift? Pricing? Availability? Technical Specs?
Thanks!

Thanks for the link. I was actually looking more into info that isn't exactly published by the mass media. I'm trying to decide to either buy a real mini laptop or the HTC Shift. Decisions Decisions Decisions.

I was actually thinking of using the unit as more of a laptop, not as a phone. With the UTMS/3G I can have computing capability anywhere I go. I'm trying to find something light as being a tech I have enough crap to carry around on a day to day basis. So I'm trying to consolidate as much as possible and make myself more portable. Internet is really the last big hurdle. I almost have nothing holding me to a building other then power and the bills would consolidate down to just two a month. One to Cingular and one to the electric company.
just be carefull with roaming on 3g in diff countries prices are a biatch
personaly i'm getting

OH HELL NO.. have u been banned from google.. ROFL
After doing a days worth of digging around. I only found out three more things about the HTC Shift.
1) It will only have 64MB of Ram
2) Price will be about $1,898.00
3) Release date is set for Oct. 19, 2007
Otherwise this is about all anyone says about the unit.
HTC Shift combines the power of Windows Vista with an innovative QWERTY-based keyboard design and 3G-connectivity. The days of compromising productivity for portability are gone. The HTC Shift provides all the power, functionality and connectivity the busy professional needs in a sleek design that is half the size and a fraction of the weight of what they lug around today. Similar in size to a couple of DVD cases, the HTC Shift comes with Windows Vista Business, includes a brilliant 7-inch widescreen touch display and a 30-gigabyte hard drive. Packed with advanced connectivity, the HTC Shift features high-speed global connectivity with Tri-Band UMTS/HSDPA, Quad-Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth 2.0 and Wi-Fi. A multimedia maven, the HTC Shift leverages Windows Media Player 11 to provide easy access to music, videos and photos.
Some specs:
* VIA CPU 1.2GHz
* Vista business (Aero)
* 7-inch sliding, tiling wide-touchscreen
* 30GB drive
* Tri-band UMTS / HSDPA, quad-band GSM / GPRS / EDGE
* WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0
* Biometric reader, front-facing camera
I am counting the days!
With each advance in mobile computing, the amount of time i can code at work grows. It is hard sneaking my tablet into my "office" at work. If the shift fits into my large pocket in my cargo pants then I will be free to work any time I feel like it. I will buy a bluetooth headset for the phone functionality.
This has been my dream of mobile computing since I first laid eyes on ppc 5 years ago. I find it hard to believe that vista will run on 64mb of ram. I expect to see 500mb.
HTC are the best, every product that comes out moves closer to exactly what i want. We should help them out by encouraging normal people to buy htc.

if it can i believe it will use SuperFetch and ReadyBoost alot

there is a 1 second snip of the intel info card at Computex in this video that sugests it 1 Gb of DDR 2.
http://jkkmobile.blogspot.com/2007/06/htc-shift-umpc-at-computex.html
and it will run on an intel cpu not via anyway

but i am looking farward to this
one thing that would have been nice (probably to power hungry) would have been the Santa Rosa new Centrino platform
The 64mb RAM is onboard, and I believe, what is being used for the cache, it also has a 1gb DDR2 module which is your standard RAM.
C- for your google skills
EDIT: And C- to me for not noticing someone above had mentioned the 1gb memory either.
I agree. I'm with you there 100%! One of the things that really attract me to this device is because I can put it into my jacket's inner pocket and have access anytime I require it. It would give me the capabilities of remote administration with much ease. I don't do much coding since I do systems administration but I do bounce around between windows and linux based hosts very frequently. Thank God for VMWare too! =]
I'm really hoping that the 64mb of ram is a fluke and that it will have much much more, better yet it would be great if the ram was upgradable.
I really want to see the device in person so I can see if it'll really do everything I want it to do. In any case, I'm counting the days as well.
EDIT:
Ohh. I finally caught up. hehehe 1GB of ram. Nice! I wonder if it could be upgradable. Hmm In any case It's a very attractive piece of equipment.
I wonder if the hard drive could be upgraded as well. A nice 150GB drive would be nice since I'm such a internet downloading whore.

Maybe, but then again, I'd try it just to see if it would work. Since I don't have Vista at all, I am curious if VMWare GSX will even work on Vista. I just rolled out a 64 bit Fedora Core 6 server running VMWare server. Now I'm 64-bit spoiled.

Kaiser/Tilt worthy upgrade?

Any Tilt or Kaiser owners plan to upgrade to the Touch Pro 2? Does it seem like it would be a significant upgrade? I'm curious to what you fellow Tilt/Kaiser owners think...
I have the Tilt and have not upgraded to the Fuze. I was waiting for the next big thing that ATT was potentially was going to bring over and it seem like this is it. I love the device's design in every aspect; looks amazing physicaly. What i don't like is that they stuck it with a 3mp camera (and removed flash!). I absolutely love the 3.6" screen. Basically, i'm pretty sure i'll be upgrading (i saved my contract upgrade and rejected the Fuze for this reason).
Yeah, I'm going to buy Touch Pro2, the reasons why, larger screen, better hardware, 5-row keyboard, looks very very cool, more finger-friendly.
iphone. if lack of a hw keyboard is not a deal breaker. After owning 2 winmo phones (currently using a tilt) and modding many other peoples iphones, i can honestly say that the iphone is superior in usability/apps/stability. after drooling for a touch diamond and then hearing my friend say its laggy after he bought it, was a real disappointment. Microsoft is really behind the curve in the mobile sector. Thinking about selling my tilt for iphone now. Might wait till winmo 7 to come out before purchasing another winmo phone. For the record i'm a pc guy and i think apple products/fans our generally pretentious and kinda douche-ie (not all though).
Not sure about the Touch Pro2. I rarely .. if ever use my keyboard. I am waiting on the HTC Topaz for ATT..... drool.
I'm probably gonna go for the TP2. 800x480 screen!
They only issue i see with the device is that they've removed the d-pad.
HTC looks like they've put every good feature into this device, from FM Radio to TV Out. It looks perfect, and although a faster processor or a DPAD wouldn't hurt. And a 6.5 upgrade sounds good as well. I am certainly getting this phone.
Dave
good thing i passed on the fuze too...The Touch pro 2 will definitely be up there on my next phone list...And this will probably be the real successor to the tytn ii...I think it also matches the specs we had a few months back on the then phantom "TILT 2" that never showed up...until now...
TP 2.... is it worth sniffing at?
Does anyone know if it'll have proper 3D and 2 D DirectX and Direct Draw drivers included? I'm not wanting a HTC customised menu so much as full native support of the built in hardware within the operating system and parts thereof such as Pocket Mediaplayer itself. I'd like to use video playback without having to slash the frame rates and/or resolution as I have to with my Kaiser (even under TCPMP).
I'm concerned to read that although it has GPS support, it doesn't appear to list what software is provided to use this in the UK/Europe. Does this mean that it could be the TP all over again with HTC refusing to acknowledge any GPS problems that may crop up? Without a tried and tested native GPS app bundled with the device, it won't be one for me.
I'm very tempted - but I think I'll have to wait until I actually can put my hands on one in a shop to decide. I fear I will find it too large and/or thick for my liking. The Tilt is thick, but small. The iphone is large to the point I feel mixed with regard to the size in the pocket/screen comfort balance, but at least is thin. The TP2 will be large AND thick. And it loses the DPAD indeed, and I use that a lot
only a few people think it would be a worthy upgrade?
What's that saying, once bitten....

If those who currently have Kaisers (or TPs for that matter) get a feeling of déjà vu with the 'finished' product and its shortcomings (video drivers, keyboard performance, GPS time to lock and any lag, important bits/features missed out etc) then yes, you are correct. HTC need to learn from its mistakes and provide a product that actually meets peoples needs fully and reliably if they want those who've already been stung by them to part with cash on a new HTC product. Many people here have already said they'll never buy another HTC product due to all the problems they've had so you get an idea of the extent of feeling about such things!
I'm planning to get the TP2
- Higher resolution big and wide screen
- Larger battery
- Faster processor
- More internal memory
- 5 row keyboard
- TV out
- USB OTG
- New TOUCH FLO 3D with larger soft menu screens
- WM 6.5 (when HTC will make it available)
I'll miss:
- D-pad
- Jog wheel
- Buttons!

Or, there are people like me who are really happy with the Kaiser, and for whom it would take something really good to warrant a change. As said, I'll see the TP2 when it's there, but until then I don't plan to change at all.
If the cookers start cooking good roms and it can be unlocked ok then yes it looks lovely

Which sucsessor

Hey mates,
I dont know the actuall Phones on the market , so i thought you guys can maybe help me out.
I am looking for a good sucessor to my Kaiser. I really love this phone but its already 2 years old now and well my phone looks like somekind of trash .
Also i got massive problems in the last time , dunno why. I am using the Ultimate X2 roms at the moment. But it seems that i sometimes cannot open my contacts or run programs.
So i like to get a new phone cause my phone contract is going to run out also.
I was thinking about the X2 but it seems to be tooooo pricie :/.
Do you guys have any nice suggestions what phone i should get ? A must have is a qwertz keyboard
Thanks
HTC
Device database is good to get the full specs
TP2 if outa price range then the Raphael is still an extremely good phone.
Re: Kaiser hard-reset or flash another ROM...
Raphael can be had for about £160 on eBay, simply unlock it if required & use whatever network provider takes your fancy.
Most other keyboard options are going to be pricey but if your thinking of starting a contract soon you might find a reasonable deal !
You could keep the Kaiser, reflash it with a stable ROM & buy & fit a new complete housing for it !
The Verizon Droid comes out on the 6th in the US. Not sure if you are looking to stick with an HTC device or Windows Mobile. It's only going to be $199 rather than the TP2 which is as much as $350. It's got a similar processor and google maps turn-by-turn directions. And....it has a directional pad, if you can't live without that.
Check it out: http://phones.verizonwireless.com/motorola/droid/
Touch pro 2 is the best successor. I dont think the droid fits the title of "successor" when talking about the kaiser. The touch pro2 retains the tilting screen, windows mobile operating system, and of course the slide out qwerty.

[Q] Will You Recommend HD7?

Hello there!
after years of using Windows Mobile, I left it at the 6.5 version and moved to Android and to be honest I'm happy with it!
but seeing Windows Mobile 7 and then Mango just made me remember the old days! so if I want to buy a device to give Windows Mobile 7 a shot will you recommend the HD7? or just pay more and get the new Titan?
I would strongly recommend you not to buy and HD7 as I have one
and Although it makes it feel like a new device, its aged a bit with regards to the hardware.
I would suggest you wait for Nokia WP7 as I m sure they will be amazing
But then again you might get the HD7 a lot cheaper now.
A point to note is HD7 has no front camera, so you will miss out when Ms has skype as I believe its coming soon
I have the HD7 now and love it. I previously had an HD2 with 6.5 and then flashed WP7 onto it and loved it even more... But you need to be prepared for WP7 as its totally different to 6.5.
With 6.5 you still had activesync and were able to treat the device as a mass storage device etc. But now you've got to sync your contacts and media different ways...
Although the Mango update has brought near perfection to the daily usability of the phone, there are still some missing things, the most important one for me that I miss from the HD2 is the WiFi Hotspot... But I find the experience so good I'm prepared to live without it but wait in expectation...
As for the HD7 as a device I find its great. Everyone comments on how nice a phone it is. The kickstand is a feature I simply adore. Its good value for money and as its no newcomer to the market accessories are plentiful and cheap on ebay.
Forgetting OS wars, as a device, I'd have no problems recommending it... It just works for me in every way...
Absolutely recomend this phone. Fist had HD2 with WP7.
HD7 with Mango works very very smoothly, does everything I need, and does it well.
All people who see it are impressed
That's what I wana know, is HD7 doing good with Mango? cause now I may get it for a good price and keep my Nexus S
I can't stand Nokia, don't know why

Interestingly, Mango is good, but I would have been happy with nodo... The combination of a smooth and fast OS (metro UI) and a big screen for games and video are what I'm addicted to now...
As you can see from my sig I tried going back to a normal sized phone/screen (LG) but I sold it within a few months...
I have friends and work friends with all the current top phones and I wouldn't swap my HD7 for any of them...
And yes, the HD7 can be had for very little money... I paid $300 for mine new... I've seen them go new from $280-350...
Okay that's it, I guess that what I need I will search for a good deal on it!
Thanks!
I recommend Windows Phone 7 to everyone I can. It's just an all around great OS. I have been a big Sony Ericsson guy for some time till I switched to the HD2 which I loved. But so far I have found nothing better than my HD7 (software wise, hardware on the other hand leaves a little to be desired, but oh well).
I like Android, but I have some major gripes with it. And iOS just puts me to sleep.

Time to upgrade from my Kaiser/Tytn II

After listening to my wife call my phone a brick for 3 years, I'm looking to upgrade. Which current phone has all of the features of our trusty Tytn II and Windows Mobile?
Any recommendations?
.
Hi,
I have exactly the same question. (And a similarly postured wife; although it doesn't matter a lot.)
I've got Touch Pro 2 lately, will probably try it more now. And I'm still looking forward to Desire Z, if I'll need to switch to Android. It's a hard time to choose (maybe I should try both..) - some things/applications are still best on WinMo (like PIM apps I need), others - better on Android (free GPS like google maps, new applications with updates, social networking/communications, etc.)
I've even thought of carrying two phones at the same time (I wish they could share the same SIM card, lol).
What could be the best choices for an oldschooler like me?
In a word, none. Nothing does what WM does. For all its faults, and the lack of support (shame on everyone for abandoning it like they did) WM has yet to be equaled in some ways by anyone, even MS. There is no other OS that lets you connect and sync directly with Outlook on your home computer, for example. Not even Windows Phone can do that. To do it in Android you have to buy a $30 program. I know, my wife also has a Kaiser which even she can sync with her Outlook. And she recently bought a 10" Android 4.0 tablet. I tried to set it up to sync with Outlook and you can't. I tried all the free apps that supposedly let you do this, none of them worked worth a damn, and most didn't work at all. And you can't see the Droid's files/folders on your network while continuing to run the Droid as a tablet. You have to choose, either its a functional tablet, or its a USB storage device, but it can't ever be both. WM does that in its sleep. I was not impressed. Support in terms of new apps and stuff is way better, but daily function is frankly childish. And WPhone is no better as far as I can tell. It also does not allow you to sync directly with Outlook on your computer. You have to synch via the cloud. The Droid and Wphone aficionados just do not see why I don't want my data stored on some internet computer somewhere, one that I have no control over and that belongs to someone else. Or that internet access time isn't unlimited for some folks. I had to look into all this because my Kaiser just died (well the power switch did, I discovered workarounds and am using it, but it is a problem). I looked and looked for a replacement and I settled on the HD2. It was HTC's last WM phone. Supposedly it was used in development of WPhone and it can run Droid, WM WPhone (even 7.5) natively from NAND, and I believe folks have even managed to run some other OSes on it. It has a 4.3" capacitive screen, a 1 Ghz processor, and it has all the bells and whistles that the Kaiser has (wifi, GPS, etc) except the physical keyboard. I deciuded the keyboard was the easiest thing to do without, especially since this has the bigger capacitive screen. Google HTC HD2, and check out the HD2 section on XDA, I think you'll be impressed. You can even set it up to dual boot to either WM or Droid. There is also talk of a program soon that will let folks run Droid apps on a virtual machine in WM, so maybe someday we will be able to run droid apps from within WM. If you're willing to buy used or refurbished, you can get one for around $200 with a 1 yr Square Trade warranty. Whatever you end up getting, beware the Chinese sellers offering cheap "new" phones, especially the older models. That was what my dual camera Kaiser was. It lasted a bit over a month, and when I tore into it, it was clearly not new. The cases were, but not the guts. The power microswtich on the main board looked like it had been replaced and that is what has failed on me now.
1,5 year ago I had same problem...which device will replace my old Kaiser?!?
It was very hard decisions because every device with keyboard have some disadvantage.
So...I found at Ebay.com for very good price WM phone: Samsung Omnia 2 16GB version from Canada and I love it!
I considered about HTC HD2 but It dosn't support a Tv-Out feature like Omnia 2 and I still prefer resistive touch screens
I install lite rom immediatelly and dualboot Android 2.2 Froyo

Hi,
This sounds great, even if I would find such one now! (Although I only see Samsung Omnia i900 - 16 GB on ebay now. This must be a worse model, huh?)
You had to move from physical qwerty keyboard to the touchscreen one though (and the screen is resistive, which is not very responsive). Does the new keyboard really work for you? What if you've been writing a lot of text with fingers, would you feel a change badly?
P.S. What do you mean by "48GB"?

- I found some from Germany: http://www.ebay.de/ctg/Samsung-Omni...11&_pcategid=15032&_from=R40&_dmpt=DE_Handy_s
-i900 is predecessor for i8000
-Typing would be better. However I'm using two SIPs: original Samsung Keypad and "SlideIT" http://www.mobiletextinput.com/Download/Windows_Mobile/Download/
It's for free and support over 40 languages
DISADVATAGES COMPARE TO KAISER
-no keyboard
-no D-Pad
-no internal slot for stylus
-worse GPS signal strength
