Best WM5 ROM for Wizard - upgrade help - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

Hi All,
I'm running 2.24a "Mr Clean" WM5 ROM at the moment, and fancy a change.
I need to hook up to Outlook 2000 at work, so that means I can't use Activesync 4.5, which in turn (as I understand it) means that I can't install a WM6 ROM yet.
So, what's the best WM5 ROM? The Molski 3.3 one sounds good - can anyone recommend a good, stable ROM for me to try? It's got to be stable, decent A2DP helpful, and I'd like it to look pretty...What's the difference between the different page pool versions?
Do I need to downgrade to an official ROM before I upgrade on my G3 Wizard?
I'm currently running:
IPL 2.2.24
SPL 2.2.24
GSM 2.25.11
OS 2.24.10.11
Cheers
Ric

I'm using Molski 2.26 for a long time now and felt quite happy with it. I just never moved on to the 3.3 because of the AKU 3 and the problem in migrating the calendar (i use a lot of repeated events / patterns). Both dotfred's util and MS outlook get confused about that.
I'm not sure if the one i'm using has A2DP but the fact is that i'm listening right now to music with my bluetooth earphones and none skipping
cheers

calendar problem?

i'm a heavy calendar user, too. i'd not heard of a calendar problem? quite happy for the phone calendar to be overwritten though if it helps as my "master" calendar/contacts/tasks etc are on my PC in Outlook...

that's the problem: I do not use MS Outlook and usually MS likes to make drastic changes between versions of their software (ask DotFred about it) thus making it very risky to load a AKU2 backup into a AKU3 OS (for the calendar sake of course)

what's special about AKU2.3

I'v been searching and reading FAQ's, but can't find an explanation on what AKU stands for and what's special about 2.3 everyone seems to want to have it.
It's basically the same idea as SP2 for XP (after you've upgraded from WM2003SE [WinME] to WM5 [XP]), it's like a service pack, and this new one includes things like MSFP which enables Push Email and is overall a smoother base ROM for us to start with... the newer HTC models like the Universal and Wizard and(O2 Atom?) have versions available for download but we lowly BA owners won't get an offical one hence all the ruckus about the one we've got available...
thanks, that's a clear answer. I'm now running tuma's 1.3, waiting for 1.5 after his peanut is born.
any suggestions if i should try another aku2.3 rom inbetween?
i'm an active business user with wifi, bt, gps, 5 emailboxes, including exchange with certificates, using mms and a lot of sms and phone and IE.
and navigating with tomtom, ozi and igo.
and listening to internet radio, sometimes looking at the news and sportevents via streaming video.
and the little one likes my qtec9090 as a dvd-player in the car, while tomtom is telling me how to drive in the background.
and offcource using word, excel and pdf to read mail attachment.
and all the special data safely stored away in ewallet.
so it's my mobile office
I too use mine extensively (and as I'm in the IT business I need to reflash at night after playing with all the new ROM's to make sure it's working for the next day ) and have been using Ivan's 4.3 Rom with the RAMDisk provided by thingonaspring... it has been very stable and very fast (for WM5), I'm now using helmi's 32MB Ramdisk AKU 2.3 ROM and it seems equally as stable and also as fast...
One caveat with the AKU 2.3 ROMs is that we are still in the 'beta' stage even though they are stable.. and with that in mind there's no guarantee...
Having said that, the WiFi, BT and messaging all work so you should have no problems there, and if your work uses Exchange 2003 SP2 then you can have your email from work 'pushed' to your BA! (At least one tester is already using this and has it working...)
I use it with 4 email accounts, bt headset (unfortunately just handsfree, not wireless stereo atm), gps (TomTom, GPStoGoogleEarth,SmartMap & Navigator II), tcpmp and all the office apps... PocketMSN isn't working yet, but I don't use hotmail for much other than spam anyway... mms works, as does sms and phone... I also use ewallet etc, so our needs are very similar...
In the end, the choice is yours
and if you now tell me that you sometimes use citrix as well and work for a multinational IT-company than i'm sure a got a twinbrother or sister.
anyway, i got the aka2.3 rom from helmi installed. works perfect on connectivity and speed.
now some time to spend to get it personalized..
thanks a lot
well actually...
nah don't use citrix, but as for the IT co... more global than multinational
glad to be of some assistance
(just need to get the ptb to allow push email from work now!)
IMAP account
Just curious, did u guys loose the IMAP account after changing the battery? I am not using pop3 on my O2, but the IMAP will disappear every time. Applies to Tuma 1.4 and Helmi 1 Beta. Any cure except resetting the machine during boot screen when the word "R None" appears?
BTW, cannot get the Helmi 1 ROM running Active Sync in "PUSH" mode, manually connection is OK though.

Suggestions wanted for when I cook a new Rom

When AKU3.2 gets stable I will make a new Rom, or maybe there will be some adjustments to my 2.26.10.2 Roms if someone discovers something really cool like reducing the PagePool for more free Ram.
But for now, I would like to know what you people think what programs are missing in my Roms.
I DO NOT add programs to it that are used only by some people, I would only like to add programs that are used by almost everyone in the community!
For now, I am thinking of adding the following programs:
For sure:
- .NET Compact Framework 2 (although it requires about 5MB on Main Memory)
- Signed_CameraPatch_ov9650.sa.cab (definitely better then the standard camera driver!)
- MMS Folder CAB file
- 2.47.11 Radio Rom (a lot of people say that this Radio Rom performs better then the Cingular 2.25.11 Radio Rom, read the thread about this Radio Rom here)
Maybe:
- SMSDRFix (SMS Delivery Report Fix), because I use it A LOT (and you all know...until know I build my Roms the way I like them the most!)
- Intent Midlet Manager (although I do not use it myself!)
- PPCContactsMgr 1.2 (for selecting multiple contacts, on my existing Roms there is also a plug-in for "Save as First/Last Name", so also this one looks useful to me)
- Null Keyboard (avoids keyboard pop-up, if you don't use it you also will never notice it, it's not a program, just an option for your keyboard settings)
- SipChange (to set a default keyboard)
What do you guys think?
Regards,
Molski
how about including the cab file that adds mms folder as well?
MMS is generally pretty carrier specific. That might be problematic give that Molski's ROMs are carrier agnostic.
well, the one from molski.biz just gives a generic sample server settings, i think if we can manage to unlock our CID, i wouldn't be so difficult to alter the mms server settings =)
thanks for listening=)
is there any flash player?!? if positive that's a good stuff to be added...

The MMS folder installation has nothing to do with MMS settings, you still need to install (or add manually) specific settings for your provider.
This is a good one, I will add it to the list of apps.

What about WM5torage? That way there's no need for Activesync or looking for a miniSD to SD adapter and a card reader...
At least I use that program a lot... Don't know how useful it is for other people...

In fact I use WM5torage a lot also, but I developed a little CAB for WM5torage and DeviceLock mapped to the VoiceDial button, because that's the way I use it. The file is available on www.molski.biz, I will copy and paste some info of the cab file here:
---------
This program installs the full versions of WM5torage 1.60 and DeviceLock,
including shortcuts for both programs and the DeviceLock Control Panel.
It remaps DeviceLock to hardware button 4, the VoiceDial button (single press).
It remaps WM5torage to hardware button 4, the VoiceDial button (long press/hold).
I made this program because I never use the VoiceDial or Record functions of the button, but I often use DeviceLock (and hate it to have it as an item on the Today Screen) and WM5torage and wanted some quick shortcuts to it (but not on the Today Screen...).
---------
Regards,
Molski
p.s. So I don't think I will put it in my Roms, simply because I would wreck my own installation and have to use a work around myself for WM5torage, so sorry.
How about overclocking, I can't imagine using it as is.

Then I will add BatteryStatus, because that is what I use to run my Wizard @240Mhz.

Hi Molsi,
What I would like is a complete *clean* rom as if it came out of the HTC or QTek departments. Might there be a version like that too? Ah, asjeblieft...?
Many thank for you work so far, keep up the good work!
Cheers,
Cacti
pls dnt add OC apps in the ROM,bec some of us use omapclock plus, better to have our own choice of choosing, better put it in the EXT_rom so that incase they dnt like it,they can easily erase it. also if you can add TALKING ALARM,this way better, shouting what's the time already, and SMARTKEY too(oh! i forgot, this already putted in the ROM 2.26.102.
so when can we XPECT the AKU 3? hehehe
Molski first of all thanks for the hard work and great support.
I don't think that you must put any software on the rom.
Everybody has there own "need".
If people want software on it they download it.
The power of the rom is the speed, so please keep it that way.
Thanks (bedankt)
You got a good point there!
Maybe I just will create an "extra" Extended Rom with a few apps in it that are must-have. It's no big deal of flashing an new Extended Rom after a Rom upgrade onto your device
But I am sure that I will add 3 new cab files to my new Roms...the 3 cabs listed in the 1st post (and also maybe smsdrfix, cause I also always deliver my Roms with SMS Notification on and for that little setting smsdrfix is a must-have app ).

You're right...I don't add overclocking because some people do not use it and if they use it there are several ways to do it, so people have to just install this manually.
Talking Alarm is not so useful for me, I am dutch and I doubt that Talking Alarm says the time in dutch
And in the morning I am too sleepy to understand english
When I am starting to read things about a stable and 100% working AKU3.2 Rom (on every AKU3.2 Rom I tested my WiFi does not connect to my router with WPA-PSK/TKIP) I will take my hands on it

Yeah...you are right...I think we just will have to wait until T-Mobile or Cingular releases an AKU3.2 Rom (without bugs...).

Add Total Commander. That's all I can think of... I hate when ROMs come with lots of stuff.
My must haves are as follows.
1 Smartskey
2 Total Comander
3 WM NewMenu

BEST ROM??

What's the BEST ROM OUT THERE?
Criteria:
- Stable
- Works (incl. BT, WiFi, phone, everything!)
- Fast
- Compatible (e.g., most if not all apps will run)
I'm giving my vote to SuperRom 1.1, becouse this is a fastest ROM, also evrything works.
I guess this is as good a place as any:
I've been using (actually, reverting to) Molski 2.26 Final. For people that have used both, what are the positives of SuperROM 1.1?
(for the purposes of discussion, maybe it would make sense to group all of the ROMs as follows: 1) AKU2.X, 2) AKU3.X, and 3) Crossbow... someone post if I have that wrong)
Super ROm 1.1
With this rom, device runs faster but I have a call dropped so I have to go back to Molski 's ROM
My opinion is wm6 its Stable, Works: BT, WiFi; phone, Fast, Compatible: most or some apps will run but barebone at the start, could for some one that wants to add the programs they only like
i've tried molski's, superRom, aku 3.3 crowbow and WM6 and i'm sticking to aku 3.3 for now cuz inspite of the memory leak problem, it's the most comprehensive rom, everything works and pretty fast too
for the superROM, wifi wasn't working..
for WM6, too much to customize to what i want to have.. plus i'm lazy.. so i'm gonna wait for the xda team to come up with a cooked WM6 rom sooner than later

does wifi with wpa-psk/tkip work for you?
My Vote was for the AKU3.3 crossbow via Faria, Molski, Dr Put, Kyphur and I think the other one RkWhite.
I had had no problems with it. It is fast stable and just great & light for me.
I like the Wm6 also. But could only vote for the best so 3.3 it is !
liked the molski 2.26, the superrom was striking, but aku 3.3 by the masters of xda-dev blew me away, despite the mem leak i think its the best, and hoping that the issue on the leak be fixed soon
For me the Cingular 2.25 ROM has been gold. Nothing has beaten it yet!
i can download each and every rom from ftp site but can anyone tell me from where i could download wm6 rom!! i m running now aku3.3 rom but i want wm6 rom pls help !!
best rom = aku 3.2 molski.biz
So far, I've installed nearly all roms listed, and here is my feedback :
other : old orange FR AKU1.x and old orange FR B2B AKU2.0 => too slow, many stuff that I don't use and too many stuff to add afterwards
T-mobile 2.26 : only used to get strong IPL/SPL as dscribed in unlocking guide. Same problem as orange roms concerning the stuff provided
Superrom : very fast but CF2 not included and stuff I did'nt use, but very good rom so far
molski 2.26 final 30 mb : very fast. problems with smartskey behaving strangely and some info not displayed (eg. amount of space available on storage or card when installing apps)
AKU 3.3 Xbow : very important memory issue (5 mb free after a few hours running, 3 to 5 SR a day) fast and well-stuffed by the way...i'll go back to it if memory issue becomes fixed
Xbow : not many stuff I use in Rom, so plenty of things to install afterwards, and because MSVC 6 in rom, i could'nt install the french version. As I'm french and using MSVC a lot, not being able to install it was determinig in downgrading to.....
Molski 3.2 30 mb : the best rom so far 4 me, very stable, very fast even with no OC, no problem with smartskey, free ram > 22 mo after 3 days of use w/o reset AND MSVC6 and all my usual stuff work flawlessly.
Molski 3.2 by far the best so far. Absolutly no problems.
WM6 is the fastest but lots of problems...
I can`t wait for a Molski ver of WM6.
AKU3.2_Clean_ZeroXtreme at this moment. It's the fastest and cleanest of the AKU 3.x roms I've found on the site. I don't care for all of the eye candy of the cooked ROM's.
I was using Crossbow for a few days. However, I kept getting battery drain issues and decided I'd had enough. I'll probably try it again shortly for ****s and giggles, because I liked it a lot.

Interesting your observations on WM6 ...
The only "problem" I've encountered is SlingBox (which I personally don't use)
Things like HTML email; call history from within my contacts; download attachments actually downloads attachments, saving a step are really cewl and useful.
Just my two cents...
WM6 All the way
I always load all my own apps etc so I like a clean rom.
HTML Mail and the Smart dialler etc are the clinchers for me.
There are lots of little things I find in this rom as I use it that make it way better than WM5. for example when saving a number from your call list WM6 has an option on the top of all your contacts to create a new contact and add the number to that and that when I open the keyboard the SIP stays hidden and does not pop up like on WM5.
Jules
The problems on WM6 were: no MMS, no Camera, battery no more then 1 day, crash, freeze, etc... i tried PDAviet4 (no email sync, no live mail, etc ) and Wi6ard. No aditional software added... Did you use another WM6 ROM?
Those problems i only had on WM6, AKU 2.x and 3.x were fine.

MMS can be solved with ARCsoft MMS. Working fine on my imate
Camera fixed - Solution provided by Faria.
for the rest, I am sure that it has to do with the software you use. I didn't notice any dramatic difference in battery life. I can get about 3 days which is about the same as with other roms. I didn't experience ANY crashes or freezes.
The MMS fix did not work and i stop looking, Faria`s camera cab i cannot find... the rom crashed with no soft just using explorer and media player... I realy like the speed and looks of WM6 so i would not downgrade if those problems coud be solved easily.
Faria ROM for now.
I really really liked the "clean" WM6 ROM, but the damn thing kept draining my battery within a day...
Thought I had it working for a day or two, but then the draining began again
Hopefully Molski of Faria will release a proper WM6 ROM, because the WM6 Smart Dialer app is GREAT!

Extract App from WM6 Rom

Now that we have a WM6 Rom avaliable for the Wizard, does anyone know how to extract certain programs and replace them in the WM5 Roms??
Particularly the Email client and Remote Desktop
Now you may ask why the he!! don't you just use the WM6 Rom?
Because I am in a corporate environment where I use the program provided by the company to both sync and access my information (Lotus Notes) Intellisync and OneBridge and neither of those have support for the yet to be "Officially Released" WM6
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Well, bad and good news for you. First of all, what you are asking probably will not work. Good news is, you DONT NEED SUPPORT!~!! WM6 is STILL CE5, its just a minor upgrade (like windows 98 to windows98se). So.... most likely your programs will function perfectly. It is very rare when a wm5 program does not function in wm6 and useually those are system tweaking programs. I would make a complete backup of your device and try wm6.... you might be pleasantly surprised.
But moving apps from Crossbow/WinMob 6/5.2 to WinMob 5 isn't as easy and depends on how they were compiled. Most MS stuff won't work without modification I think.

Why to upgrade to WM6

Hi, ALL
I have G3 T-Mobile MDA (Wizard), running Wm5 custom ROM from Xelencin and latest Radio ROM.
Also I have installed
SPB Diary, Pocket Plus, Weather, Imageer, Backup
Resco File Explorer
PhotoDialer Plug-in
WM5Storage
MemMaid
Some RSS Reader
iGuidance
MS VoiceCommand 1.5
IMPlus, Skype
Yahoo 2 Go, Google Maps, Live Search
TCPMP
etc
most of these on 2GB miniSD. Everything works. I use most of that from time to time.
I saw faria WM6 ROM. I saw MB Rom, I saw Mun's Rom. My question is - do I need to upgrade to WM6 ? Will it add something, which probably I'm missing ?
Or it is just to have latest Windows Mobile OS ?
Second big question - will my apps work with WM6 ?
Also if moderators think this question belongs to Wizard Mobile 6 forum, can you please move it

Do you need to upgrade? Probably not. I will say that most (not all) of the custom roms will give you more space and will run faster than the stock official roms.
Will add something, which you are probably missing? The quick answer is yes. You are missing the frustration that some of us go through with these . Seriously though, its hard to answer it, but for me I find the custom roms more stable than my original Cingular 2.25, faster, gives me more room on the phone itself, and just more fun to play with (but then I'm a geek).
I can't honestly say why the draw to WM6 other than the geek factor involved and the ability to show friends and coworkers that you are running WM6 (and they don't care anyone or don't even know what you are babbling on about).
I would suggest you at least give Faria's or Molksi's 2.3 and 3.3 ROMs a try even if you aren't interested in WM6. They are VERY nice and stable. But also, understand that you will have to fiddle and tweak with your phone for a day or two to get it back to where you want it.

I've used Spb Backup, Resco Explorer, WM5torage, Memmaid, MS VoiceCommand 1.6 all on Faria's AKU 3.3, WM6 MBE, and Faria's WM6 "the real thing" and they all work.
I'll defer to others on the rest of your list.
I know you didn't list it but, as you are using other spb products,
spb time doesn't fully work
How did you get Yahoo go 2?

It's only available for smartphones... You don't happen to have a link/file handy? :d
Yahoo Go 2 for smartphones and pocket pc phones:
This is where I got mines from, they had it as an option when it first came out but now it is hidden and they want your phone information to send it to you.
This link will get you the cab. file and the active sync download.

That link is Yahoo Go 1, which I am running right now.
