hello all!
Im upgrading to nbd 8.0 today and Ive backed up my pda with spb and spirte. my question to you all is, I need to backup my contacts and all that jazz for the upgrade. what's a good pim backup that will restore after a rom upgrade?
EDIT: I apologize about the title, I submitted without reviewing and had a typo in the title, which I cannot correct. thank you
Thank you all,
Flip
ps. contacts and sms, tasks/appt are the only things I wanna restore on the new rom
First, the title of the thread says NBD 9.0 which doesn't exist. it might not be a big deal but may lead some to read this thread by mistake (maybe that's what you want )
Second, doing a little search wouldn't hurt. http://forum.xda-developers.com/search.php?searchid=4015233 i just used two words (PIM* AND backup)
It's called "PIM Backup" by dotfred (v2.5 by now) and it can be considered a standard application as most cooks include it in their ROMs. It's filled with options, scheduling, etc...

LMAO the title I didnt do on purpose it was an honest mistake.
as for pim backup, I knwo there are plenty and plenty of apps that do pim backup out there. my question really is, can I restore it on nbd 8.0 even though I will no longer be on the official 2m5 cingular rom and all?
Thank you very much
No! Don't use backup programs to backup PIM from WM5 to WM6 (At least for SPB Backup), it doesn't work and the contacts will not show correctly in WM6.
You should use PIM Backup or ActiveSync+Outlook.

what is the fastest backup software for Kaiser?
before i buy Kaiser i use SPB Backup which was very good but seems to be very slow on kaiser
i also use spb backup and it works very fast on my kaiser. I've got a backup complete in 2 mins...
really? where did you installed you SPB Backup? in main memory or Storage?
in main memory
PPC Pim Backup is my choice - free, fast enough for me, reliable...

original HTC Rom 1.56.407.3
I used to use Spb Backup on WM5, but always had issues with it on WM6 (they may have upgraded it by now as this was many months ago) so I switched to Sprite Backup. I really like Sprite Backup (even has a PC client where you can backup directly to your PC if you want). Works great and has been flawless for me when I flash a rom I don't like, I just flash back to the previous rom, then do a restore. Hasn't failed me yet (where I had numerous Spb Backups not work when I tried to do a restore).
YMMV

Can you flash to a new ROM and do a restore onto it ? Thereby making transistions to new ROMs easy ie not having to rebuild all your apps and registry settings.
It is strongly recommended that you don't restore a backup from a different ROM. There will be different registry settings and other things that will cause you many headaches.

PPC Pim Backup allows you to do that, you can even restore a backup made under WM5 when using WM6 and vice-versa !!

There is a big difference between restoring your PIM database and all of your programs and settings. I don't think the PIM database has changed much between WM5 and WM6 but I guarantee you that if you restore a full backup from WM5 to WM6 you will hose your device. You might not brick it, but it sure as hell won't run right.

yes that's right, I was talking about PIM only, I should have mentionned it
I plan to update the OS of my TyTN II from WM6.0 to 6.1.
I regularly back-up my files with Sprite Back-up.
My question is, will there be any issues (incompatibility etc) with restoring my back-up files to the new OS?
On that note, will the programs I used to have in WM6.0 (e.g. TCPMP, TouchFlo cube from XDA forums etc) be still compatible with WM6.1? Will I be able to re-install them without issues?
TIA
rigel
Only if you have a new enough version of Sprite Back-up

There will be issues unless you get (possibly at cost) a new enough version of Sprite backup. The freebie version included on the HTC CDROM may complain if you try this and only handles restores and backups within the same OS. Someone posted about exactly this issue here on 23/7.... will search for that thread.
***Edit*** Here is that thread but read what it mentions about cross OS back-ups and restores not working with everything (except things like personal folders, contacts etc).
Problem after installing WM6.1
Personally when ever I upgrade an OS on any device I always reinstall software from scratch and check the software apps compatibility with the new OS before doing so at the software publishers website.
***Edit 2*** Changed subject and content to reflect possibly not the very latest version still being OK. Latest post after this one (to check manual) is good advice.
I have Sprite 6 and it is fully compatible with WM 6.1. If you have Sprite WM2005 I THINK you can still do a back up and restore but need to go through a process of getting an upgrade file first. IIRC the Sprite User Guide details the process under 'Advanced Mode'. If not, the Sprite site has it under their FAQs re WM2005.
Hi!
May I join in ?
has anyone discovered any other issues?
I use CE-Star, and check email via an Exchange Server.
Is ugrading to 6.1 really beneficial ?
Back to my searching...
ofiaich
Now that I've thought about it...
Much thanks Flying Kiwi
After thinking about it, and reading that other thread, I'm thinking I don't really need the Sprite backup. I mean, the really important stuff (contacts, e-mail, tasks/schedules/calendar) are already in my laptop, and I could just do a sync after I upgrade to 6.1, right?
Come to think of it, what other stuff exactly is in the Sprite backup file? All the other stuff like music, pictures and whatnot are in my memory card. Will 6.1 recoginse all those files in my microSD? Or do I have to sync all my music from WMP all over again?
I don't mind having to re-install all the other applications. I'm also just wondering if they would also be compatible with 6.1.
Pardon the "amatureish" questions. I'm all new at this

I'm on a mission to update my ROM, and I've been reading/thinking about it, and I have come to the following conclusions.. Hopefully if I'm wrong on any of them, someone can say so..
I'll backup my SMS and PIM data. PIM data should sync back over, SMS will not, so I'll need to restore that.
Update HardSPL. I don't know what version I have, but I'll put the latest suggested for WM 6.1 (3.56 I believe)
I'll take Sprite Pro, and download a copy of my stock ROM and Radio and put those three files on my SD card, so if all else fails, I can just go right back the way I was. (Right??)
Write down all of my *must have* apps, make sure I have their cabs and put them and licensing info on my SD card for easy reinstall. And what ones I can save settings on or write down the settings, do that so I have it.
Hard reset, install new ROM (I think I'm going with ROMEOS) and Radio (1.65.20.xx I think it was I decided on for GPS, battery etc), hard reset again.
Tilt specific settings will go away, but there's a thread on that by redbandana that's great. So restore some cabs there to fix that back.
Install my minmum required apps and reconfigure them, make sure it's all working, configured, get synced back up with Outlook, etc.. Once that's done, make a backup with Sprite Pro.
Reinstall auxillary stuff, but I'm going to try (my best!!) to minimize this, as it makes a mess and seems to cause problems. Right now my Tilt has no notifications (not Opera related), no LEDs (thus TT7 doesn't work), and some general weirdness sometimes.
Hopefully by doing this I'll have two complete setups.. the WM6.1 setup installed and backed up on the SD card. Also my current WM6.0 setup that I could return to by hard reset, install 6.0 ROM and radio and run backup file if all else fails.
So in the end, I could swap between my current WM6.0 and new WM6.1 without a lot of hassle if I needed to, but hopefully I won't need to.
Hope this isn't considered thread crapping, but seems relevant to most people migrating to 6.1 and are unsure about the process (as I am stll myself)
I used to love SPB backup for keeping my data safe when I screwd up my phone too much, but for some reason I have less good experiences with the SBP / Diamond combination.
First all, my faforite contacts dissapeared from the TF3D tab when restoring a backup (happened to me several times), then my music player went crazy after another restore and finally it crawled up and died in a quiet corner after another restore... I had to hard reset to get it alive again... and re-install everything...
This never happened to me while doing the same thing on a HTC Touch...
Am I missing something or is SPB Backup not working properly on the diamond???
Is sprite backup any better???
Ps: I use stock NLD ROM 1.93
i don't like Sprite or SPB Backup for the Diamond, neither seem to work properly! At the moment i'm using Jeyo Mobile companion for the Contacts, Messages (SMS,MMS,Email) etc and it seems to be ok as it also saves the message threading too which is a bonus!
That is weird, i use spb backup also and have no bissues with that. just can advise you to go through all the settings as there are several that need to be set correctly. Also during restore you need to correct the options for restore.
If you set it up correct all will be restored.
Grtzzz Machineman
What is your SPB backup version ?
I found SPB backup caused only problems with my M700. For the Diamond I just copy all data off, and fortunately use Outlook on Exchange to resyn contacts, email etc etc.
I then have to reinstall all apps :-(
I have it down to a 10 minute, fine art.
Have used Spb Backup for while with my Diamond and no problems.....perhaps a re-install of the program is in order

SPB backup 2.0 I think, I just downloaded the latest version and used that, su I am up to date...
I think the SPB cannot handle the internal memory or the TF3D settings or something...
I think I will make just backups of email and contacts etc and also learn how to install everything in 10 minutes like Sickboy555
[Idea] Would it be possible to create one big exe or cab file from several loose cab file's and maybe also integrate some reg tweaks, so I can install them all in one go?

I m using the latest version as well (2.0 something) and I have no problem at all,
I made restore from backup few times and all were ok..
The problems I saw that while using my local interface language instead English it made some problems, so I m using English iterface anyway and Just have to change from local language to English after HR..(u can use
other language , but b4 backup change to english)
2 more thing that u should take care:
1. save all the backup u make (once in 1-2 weeks or something) in your PC.
and if problem with one restore u can use the previous one..
sometines u have problem due program that u installed and u make a backup
with the problem (otherwise why to make HR and restote ?), and the prblem still exist after restore...
2. Do SR b4 backup , u get "clean" RAM for backup...
If you are discussing technical problems with a backup program, and you arent sure of the prog version, you are just wasting your own and everyone elses time. Find out.
hello,
before starting a backup reset your device.
and before you playing the backup back, reset it too.
than you will never became problems with your spb-tool.
sometimes you have really wait for ending of backup(ping) or restoring.
dont wait and reset your device and try again.
no prroblem that you dont know your version,
because a backup-program is for backup(ping)/restoring,
an essentuelly needed tool for all devices of the world.
dont sell if dont well !!!!
check the german o2-site (http://www.o2online.de/nw/support/downloads/software/xda/xdadiamond/index.html) for money-less backup-tool.
okokur
I have been using SPB Backup (and Weather and Shell) with no problems on my Diamond.
spb backup 2.0.1 build 3092
sometimes i had "messing" contacts (doubled from sim) but all the rest worked fine. I'm on 3rd rom installation and after flashing/Hresetting i just restore my last backup of the old rom using the option "rom upgrade" thicked.
all ok: custom weather, powermanagement, background 4all pages, font fix and so on... (to be sure i keep this "system" cabs in an internal storage folder named "mayday").
I run a scheduled nightly backup everyday

While u using nightly backup everyday it means u don't know if u have "stable" mobile since it makes restart
everyday after backup .. when I had problems b4 restore
old backup I got restart without reason every night, and I see it as problem...after restore no more restart every night..
I think sprint support messed with my diamond
I use spb backup 2.0.1 build 3092 as well and backups run fine. The only thing I don't like is that after backup runs it always wants a reboot even if you tell it not too, and the option to automatically enter pin on reboot doesn't really seem to work, it hangs on windows 6.1 green screen while booting and finishes when you enter the pin code. I haven't really played with restore though. I did find after talking with sprint advanced technical support the other day, my phone suddenly lost the tf3d quick contacts and then also required full contact sync with outlook. It seemed that something tech support did remotely wiped out all my contacts! Has anyone else ever experienced this? I thought this happened on my original touch as well once or twice. Does sprint have this capability? Has it ever happened to anyone else? Am I just paranoid?
Hi...
This is probably a very "noob" question, but I was just wandering if there were any free tools for backing up my phone (want to update my ROM, but dont really want to shell out for a tool to back up)
All I want to back up are my contacts, pictures, programs and possibly SMS(if that's possible?
PIM Backup - Contacts and SMS
Pictures - Are they not set to Internal Storage by default. Which is not touched by ROM upgrades
Programs - Install to Internal storage and keep cabs in a directory in Internal Storage. I have found that in the main a reinstall of a cab to Internal picks up settings

Even though you might call yourself a "noob" you can still search for answers, before posting something you know has been discussed plenty.
PIM works great for contacts and sms:

I want to try some new 6.5 ROMs but now I am happy with THDV3.55.
In more than 2 months I made a lot of customizations (files, registry and latest Opera 9.7 inside Windows directory). I installed a lot of applications (that need setup.. like TomTom, Skype, Fring, etc...) and I don't want do waste my time restoring all if I want to come back to this ROM after.
What software can I use to backup and then restore all files, setting and application (maybe I need a bit a bit copy?) if I want to revert to THDV3.55?
Thank you!
Sprite Backup ?

First off as some who has already posted 29 times you should know that this is not the correct forum to post such a question. Should be in the General section. Also, if you had searched you would have noticed that one of the stickies in the General section is dedicated to SASHIMI, which does exactly what you requested!! Other software for backing up files include SPB Backup, Sprite, Resco.
Obviously if you plan to revert back to THDV3.55 you would need to flash this rom first.
In future try and abide by the forum rules. First and last warning.
