Microsoft I thank you!

I've just installed Microsoft Vista and find it a very nice operating system.
For my phone I had to install the Vista version of ActiveSync, I paired up my phone with that prorgam and it worked flawlessly.
But what FU#[email protected]% idiot has made an option to overwrite the phone data with that of outlook WITHOUT asking a deletion approval.
When installing software on my Vista machine askes me several time if I'm sure.... But that louwsy program just deletes everything without even asking.
Fortunately, I was just a merely 250 contacts that I've completely lost since my backup was lost due to the Vista installation.....
Normally the contacts would be in the deleted messages box, but since I've turned of that option I completely lost everything...
BASTARDS !!!!!!
(Sorry for that.)
I'm going outside now and break something....
Hope that'll release my frustration..

hahaha
It happened to me several times cuz I always reflash my PDA and format my laptop.. I decided to save them in Microsoft's servers and add them to Messenger live contacts
When you pair your devices the MOBILE DEVICE CENTER is asking you how you want your data synchronized: replacing on mobile device, replacing on pc or combining! I guess you haven't paid attention! Even after you paired your devices you can change this options in the settings.
yikes, im sorry about that. Also happened to me not too long ago except on XP when I deleted the contacts on my phone. I resynced hoping that phone contacts would be restored, but instead stupid activesync deleted all the contacts off outlook even though AS was set to "replace items on device"!
Thankfully, all my contacts were moved to the "Deleted Items" folder, and I could restore them! (hit ctrl-6 when in outlook) I hope this helps.

Microsoft needs to make Vista Windows compatible.
After this happened to me twice I started to backup my contacts regularly with PIM Backup...

damn straight! best program i've ever used. by backing up to a memory card once/twice daily you cant really go 'wrong' as such!
now, if only it was a 'requirement' for all cooked roms!
sorry to hear about your loss. lol. i very nearly lost my ENTIRE MSN messenger contact list (comprising of some 400+ contacts) but luckily i had 'tried' WLM on my smartphone before hand and it had synced them to that!
WLM is weird in the only sense that it will delete from both your phone and from your messenger list!
go back to XP Pro.
Vista is crap.

Typically one should never upgrade a Micky$ OS until SP1 is released, XP and W2k are both great examples. My biggest complaints are USB and network speed when copying data... just today went back to XP on my Thinkpad... just SO much easier when dealing with PDA's... (more importantly, my version of Ghost Server won't live under Vista... that's a deal closer for me... and screw Virtual PC and such, no time or desire)
Here is My 2 cents worth:
Windows 95 was a huge improvement over Windows 3.1. --- Excellent Job!!!!
Windows 98 was just a suckier version of Windows 95.
Windows Millenium Edition ME totally sucked. I fell for it. They got my $100.00 ----- ripped me off.
However Windows XP really hummed. --- Excellent Job!!!!
Windows Vista is just a suckier version of Windows XP.
Windows Vista = ME2 Only this time they're Not getting my $100.00
Thats just my Opinion.
Stick with XP Pro...............................(I can hear Mac users saying "get a Mac")
Mac is not a solution - it limits just about anything you want to do with the computer. IMHO Win XP offers much more in terms of available software and hardware compatibility (even over Vista).
I agree Mac is Not an answer. I got a supervisor at work always telling me how much better a Mac is. I never agree with him.
My Laptop has a door on the side where you can slide out the HDD. I have 3 Hard Drives.
1 has Linux -- can't begin to figure that one out.
2 has XP -- its my Old Faithful. Tried and True. The one I use.
3 has Vista Ultimate -- slmgr -rearm every 30 days. Testing it. It really does suck.
PIM Backup is the best!
Sorry to hear. I use intellisync to sync my data. I sync some stuff from lotus notes and some stuff from outlook. But the main reason i use intellisync is because before it does anything it prompts you with a dialog and tells you what it is about to do. Then I can go ahead or cancel or re sync everything.
I've tried other products and they didn't prompt and I've spent hours cleaning up duplicate entry's after the first sync.
Right now I'm having a few probs with intellisync though and am working with their support to figure it out. But its still one of the best sync programs I know of.

I just had the EXACT same thing happen to me. Its a good thing I had a "not too old" backup saved to the Airset Website. Otherwise I would have been TOTALLY screwed.
yep i know how you feel, had the same thing happen on my Magician and on the Hermes and more times than i can remember on the Nokia suite previous to that (believe it or not its worse than Activesync).
as for Vista im running it on the home laptop (it came with it) it is quite a shiny OS and considering the amount of surveys and control groups microsoft apparently did to perfect it (or finish it) its surprising there wasnt one Pocket PC user that said "hey you know that over write function in activesync..." unless there was and they didnt listen.
It wasn't Vista that caused the problem...
Personally I like Vista, the only thing I find crap is that you have to approve every program to run. It's great for security, but really crap If you play WOW, everytime the answer is yes, Vista won't remember it.
And someone mentioned that there is a choice how to sync.
That's correct, but when you pair your device it's kinda hidden in extra options I believe, I've found the button now. Still lost my contacts.
I find it really absurd that there isn't any message or approval question on the device. I think it would be nicer to let the program ask what data to keep what data to lose, if I setup syncing with data from the computer It will overwrite telephonenumber I've changed in the phone.
But I think I have got my contact almost complete again. It's a shame that I lost the phonenumbers that I pickup with te red button (ignore) or wiggle the scrollwheel up and down (silence).

Windows 95 using DOSBox

Hey does anyone had booted Win95 using dosbox? (the desktop edition)
If anyone knows how-to then please reply.
I need it for the future Win95-Niki booting.
go to development and hacking thread and do a search
i remember there was a thread for win 95 using bosch emulator
and yes it run very poorly and there is only enough mem to start stuff like paint and notepad
If you search on Google you will find about this, but I preffer to emulate a old 68k Macintosh with vMac
BUT Bochs (for PPC):
-is workin' slowly
-is buggy
-on mine Niki(WWE 6.1; R:1.58.16.27), when execute, nothing happens
if your looking to boot on pc i would try virtual pc.
unless you didnt want to use that?
Another very good VM is VirtualBox. And here is the link for Virtual PC.
But it must be DosBox, 'cuz it's avalaible for PPC
as are all the other suggestions people give
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=362344&highlight=windows+xp
A WORD OF WARNING
you could use bochs to do it.
im trying to run win 95 on xda 2 but no luck yet.
so it might not work
flyboy
Humm. flyboyovyick2k9 gave you a very nice tip

[Q] migrated to osx...signing apks, creating updates, etc...help :)

So long story short, my trusted laptop finally died after 3 years of abuse. A friend at apple asked me, "if i can get you a great deal on a mbp, would you consider a switch?". sure why not. yada yada yada, I am now using osx.
okay...
so there are still lots of things I am sorting out. I have all the basics already taken care of; sdk, fastboot, adb, blah blah blah. Those were easy. After some searching, I can only seem to locate windows/linux tools for the following (I'll admit, I could probably search more but I KNOW there are people on here who have these setup on their apples so I am defaulting to you):
-resigning apks
-creating an update.zip
-deodexing
Once I get that sorted, I am going to move onto this one...is it possible to build from source in osx or do I still require a linux machine?
That's it for now. So any of you osx users with any of the above already solved, your help would be greatly appreciated Even just links would suffice.
I am sorta in a rush as I am taking over the responsibilities for the miui rom and while that would have been trivial leading up to this switch, it doesn't seem to be that way right now until I get this stuff resolved
Cheers!
I may be turning this into an FAQ once I am done.
Thus far I have found the following:

fun times
Have you looked in to running parallels. There is program called VM FusionWare which will let you run Windows in an active OSX. I think it's a really good program, although I haven't used any of the competing software. IMO it's a necessary addition to a MBP. (WIN XP SP2 runs great)

Windows 7 Repair

Hey guys. I'm pretty good with computers, and I'm stumped, I was hoping some of you XDA geniuses could help me out.
I recently tried to download the Duke Nukem Forever demo, which turned out to be virus-ridden. I was so excited to play that I didn't run a virus scan on it (I know, noob mistake) before trying to install. Within 10 seconds, AVG was like "o****", and I was greeted with the splash screen of my motherboard.
Windows Startup Repair didn't help me (go figure), and I would be that guy that doesn't make recovery images for his PC.
My question to all of you is, is there a way to make an actual legit repair dvd for Windows? I'm not talking about Microsoft's Windows Repair disk (which just launches the same things that Windows does when **** hits the fan). I'm looking for a way to take my Windows installation disk, and overwrite Windows with a fresh install like one would if upgrading from Vista to 7 by using the DVD (except from the Windows boot menu/DVD, since I am unable to enter Windows at all.
I just want to be able to get into my drive and backup my bookmarks and save games (all my other stuff is on a separate partition).
My only other option is to hook up a spare HDD and use my drive as a slave, virus scan it, and move my files from there, but I'd like to avoid ripping my PC apart for the moment.
Please, no "you should have installed Mac/Linux/whatever comments". Thank you for your help.

If you have a CD that you use to install Windows 7 you can boot from CD using the boot menu and do a completely new installation from there. I may be reading what you are asking incorrectly but that's what I did when I accidently screwed up my computer and couldn't boot any OS.
-Remember, Android hell is a real place and you will be sent there at the first sign of defiance-
Yeah, that's not what I'm asking haha. I'm looking for a way to overwrite my current copy of Windows (to fix the corrupted files and save the files on my C: drive so I can extract my important files) without reformatting and installing a completely fresh copy of Windows. And I need to be able to do this without having to go into Windows (because I can't lol).

If you make a new installation there will be a folder called windows old, or something like that. All your files will be in there.
-Remember, Android hell is a real place and you will be sent there at the first sign of defiance-
Oh, really? Are you certain? And can anyone else verify this (Not saying you're unreliable man, just wanna be certain lol)?

You can do a 'Repair' install from the Recovery menu. Just boot from your Win 7 disk to select it. If you have System restore turned on you might want to try that first, from the same menu.
I don't see repair, only startup repair.

Repair may not be the best option anyway as it'll only fix system files, perhaps leaving the malware intact. System Restore is the better option. Failing that, grab yourself a copy of malwarebytes from another PC, put it on a memory stick and run it from safe mode on the infected PC.
Microsoft have also released a malware scanner that can be run off a memory stick. You'd need another PC and a spare memory stick to use it. It's basically a copy of security essentials but the process makes the memory stick bootable so it can be run on an infected machine outside of the Windows environment.
Hang on, i'll find a link...
https://connect.microsoft.com/systemsweeper
There you go.
For future reference you can create a repair disc for Win 7 by simply typing 'system repair disc' in the start menu.
Try Hirens boot CD. Live CD with mini XP and antivirus apps and many things more. Its really handy live CD for repair.

You can nearly extract everything out of an old windows installation. Bookmarks are in json files if i remember correctly, and you can also open the old registry file (google a bit).
I think its not worth go through all the trouble to make your system start again, i would rather try to just install new and get everything i need from the old files.
So basically most of you agree I should install windows without reformatting do I can get my files from the C: drive lol
Sent from my Synergized Evo.
try using hirens boot disc
it has an live windows xp so you can check for viruses from there, also you can run several other tools.
Will do. Right now I'm trying the Microsoft System Sweeper.
Sent from my Synergized Evo.
Another one for Hiren's Boot CD. YOu get the Mini XP, which just boots up into a watered down version of XP, but when you go into My Computer, all your files will be there. Also I know it has some tools running from MiniXP, but you can a lot of stuff when booting into the liveCD.
Alright lol. Sounds good. Still running Microsoft System Sweeper, but when that's done I'll try it.

[mac noob] best way to run windows programs on OSX?

Tho I'm a PC guy, I am still the family techie. So when my uncle called me and asked me to help him run windows programs, which he hasily defined as "work stuff", onto his Mac ( 15" 4:3 core 2 duo MacBook Pro w/ Lion) I said I'd help.
I knew of a couple different ways to do it - bootcamp, parallels, wine, vmware, ect- and after a little Googling, I called him back and asked him about dual booting Windows 7. He would really rather avoid having to power down his computer and boot it back up whenever he needed to run his software, but he wouldn't mind having to buy a seat of W7 if it would make it work hassle free after I set it up.
So, of the avalible options, what would give the best overall system performance? I may end up doing this on his i7 iMac as well, if he likes whatever I do.
I know there are Mac users here, so I hope you can help.
wine http://www.winehq.org/
Or parallels. It will run a windows environment on top of Mac OSX
thanks for the answers guys, but i know what the options are. I was wondering, from someone who has experience, which works best? Surely there's one that works easier or faster than the others?
