I have been wanting to try out some of the newer ROMs out there, but I also have my WM5 ROM nice and customized (and working).
Is there a way to make a ROM dump of my current config, which is flashable back to my Wizard via RUU?
This method would save TONS of time as an RUU ROM update only takes 5-6 minutes as opposed to flashing a ROM and restoring a backup and hoping all went well.
In summary, I want to:
1. Make an OS ROM dump
2. Convert the dump to an OS.nb file
3. Flash the newly created OS.nb file to my Wizard
I think this method would make backup apps pointless, as in 5 mins you could be back up and running without worry.
Is it possible?
Thanks,
Lowkee

NO. I don't think it's possible because the personal settings aren't stored in the OS partition. In fact the OS partition is only used upon boot, when it's loaded to RAM; after that the systems runs completely from RAM.
So you'd have to backup the ROM and also the User Area, which is possible except about the writing part; The UA isn't mapped in the boot loader, meaning the RUU couldn't know where to flash it to and when using a RAPI tool like pdocwrite after writing the UA the phone executes an hard-reset (cleaning all the info )

Upgraded my Qtek9090 with the latest ROM from www.qtek.nu and noticed all BT files were up to v. 3500.
Restored the full ActiveSync backup to get my apps etc back and now I have a mixture of 2400 and 3500 BT system files.
I had hoped important system files were protected from being overwritten by older ones but obviously not... Just wondering what other files got downgraded as well...
Any idea how to upgrade ROM _and_ keep installed user applications in an easy way?
when one makes an upgrade, you should not restore, but inserting all the applications again again, if it doesn't spend that...

Does anyone in here know if I can safeley reload my Sprite Back-Up after a ROM Upgrade without screwing-up details of the ROM-Upgrade ?
I mean: If I understand this right, after Booting parts of the ROM ar loaded into the RAM, which could be overwritten.
Or am I totally off here ?
After a rom upgrade, you should never restore a complete backup, regardless of the backup program you use. With sprite, it is easy to do a restore of individual databases (appointments, contacts, email, sms etc), as well as the document folder. The other option is to use the "device upgarde" functionality of Sprite Backup, but for that to work, you will need to make an image of the machine with the new rom I believe, and without anything installed. (but for that you need to check the manual).
You should never restore a full backup, since you will be restoring parts of the old ROM in the process.
I only use Sprite backup as a fall-back in case of a problem with a Rom update.
Even if you select the "allow upgrades" option, it can overwrite some of the data that you have just changed in the upgrade.
I have loaded all of my apps and data that I must retain on a memory card and I just reload them from it.
Hope this helps........Later

Here is how I see it: Any file that is not ROM-based will be pulled by Sprite Backup.
Even though a hard-reset will reload all the Extended ROM CAB files, they are still in the Storage/Program Memory and can still be replaced, deleted, etc. They are supplemental to the ROM files from the CE ROM core.
A good experience is when I upgraded to Build 3900 on my Extended ROM and restored a Sprite Backup file afterwards and noticed it went back to 3500. The BT*.* files in the Windows directory were backed up, and thus restored, overwriting the work done by the Extended ROM load.
The best thing to do is "move along" your backup file with your upgrades.
If you decide to recook your Extended ROM, upgrade CAB files or builds, then keep that upgrade CAB file handy to run again. I would highly recommend using a program such as OCP Software's WinCE CAB Manager to look into the CAB files you are replacing to see what files and registry entries get directly affected.
Bottom line method for me is 1. backup your PPC, 2. update the Extended ROM, 3. hard-reset, 4. restore the PPC, 5. reapply any new CABs from the Extended ROM, 5. rebackup the PPC.
By the way, the Upgrade works especially well when you have a new CE ROM that has new ROM files, such as Windows Media Player 10 (if and when it comes out). According to the instructions on Sprite's site, you run the Upgrade utility on the clean (hard-reset) image with the OLD ROM, perform the upgrade, then restore your backup WITH the Upgrade Data.
Thank you. Sounds very logical. A complicated process, but it beats reconfiguring the MDA after an Update by several hours ...
Good that all the people who envy us for our "MDAIII" don't know how much time we waste getting these machines to work ....

you mean copy the "program files" folder to SD-card and the load it back ? or how :?:
You can copy all the CAB files from the C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync folder onto the SD card for safekeeping, or look for a program called CabBackup, which has been proven useful in many a situation.
hi,
i have delicate question.
i'd like to make the instalation image, which can be directly loaded to wizard and all aplications and their states are set same as at the moment of creating image.
simply, the same method as used on standard computers.
and why a want this ?
i want it, because i'd like to test any new ROM and if i find it unusefull, then i can return to my last canfiguration without wasting time with installing all the stuff to my wizard.
thx for info
I would just use SPBBackup, Spire or Sunnysoft Backup Manager to create a backup of my Device + StorageCard. This way you always backup everything you have into one backup file.
If you want to create an image you might also consider using SPB Clone..
But the first choice works best for me
Only disadantage is that you will need a lot of storage to place the Backup on.
Hi all,
Comeing from PC development, I would normally take an image of a system before overwriting with a new one. I'm interested in trying a new ROM, especially WM 6.5.
Is there a way to to an image dump of the Phone before I install a new ROM/OS?
Cheers

It'll cost you $20 but it's probably worth it.
What do you want to backup?
Your current ROM (OS) or your current installed applications?
To back up the ROM, you need to dump your ROM, have it converted to *nbh file. Only then you can restore the original ROM.
To back up your applications I use Sprite Backup, the same that andyturner proposed.

Ah ha, now we come the first limit to my knowledge of such devices. Are not the ROM and installed apps one in the same? Can I not take an image of the whole phone system as a whole so I can get back to exactly where I was - i.e altered settings, reg tweaks, and installed apps etc - just like creating an image clone of a PC system (i.e. ghost etc)

The OS is in (ROM) Flash memory, the applications are in RAM or on your memory card.
Backup programs like Sprite save only what is in RAM and/or on your memory card, not the OS which is in the Flash memory.
I do not know an application that is backing up both.
Is there any method, or programs out there that can copy the current NAND installed on the vogue, and make a back up of it? Possibly in an .NBH format? So that it could be reflashed to a device?
While switching back and forward from various ROMs this would be quite useful. I see there are some tools out there for other android native devices, just wondering if we have anything?
as far as i know the only backup method is to go into the NoMo menu and pick backup and then restore it later i dont know if it outputs to any type of file though
When you back up data form the install menu it makes a data.img file on the sdcard under andboot. It will overwrite one if you have one there already.
You can restore that by selecting restore data, but you will have to resintall the system again, i.e. have the androidinstall.tar of the build you want to return to.
