At&t 3g Vs. T-mobile Edge In The Us. - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I am currently a t-mobile customer and love their customer support and their service. I am thinking of switching to ATT for the 3G since it looks like T-Mobile may not have 3G available for the TYTN II in the US. Any thoughts? Advantages/Disadvantages of each carrier?

I also have a TyTN II, but am keeping it on T-Mobile. The reason is that I have a great family plan that cannot be beat. We have 5 phones. I pay the base rate plus $10 for each additional phone. I have the unlimited data plan at $20 and the other 4 phones are getting push mail with the T-Zones 5.99 plan. Someday, T-zones may not work anymore, but until then - this is a great deal. I also get unlimited text/mms for $10/month that covers all 5 phones. With 3 of the 5 phones in the hands of teens, that is an awesome deal. If AT&T could get me unlimited push email and web access, unlimited texting, free mobile to mobile, free nights and weekends and 1000 shared minutes over 5 phones for less than $100/month - I would jump ship.
To be honest, EDGE is not that bad and at the times where I find myself needing greater speeds (Sling Player, etc), I have access to WiFi (grocery store, gym, around the house, office, cafe, etc)

my edge is fast but i just wonder how much faster 3g is. Just found out that 3g for att isnt available in my area anyhow What is push email? I put my pop email settings in to get mail and it updates every 60 mins and if i have deleted mail from my outlook it will no longer show up on my phone. Can I setup push email this way since i am assuming push email is where it goes to your phone as you get it?

From Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push_e-mail):
Wiki Article said:
Push e-mail is used to describe e-mail systems that provide an "always-on" capability, in which new e-mail is instantly and actively transferred (pushed) as it arrives by the mail delivery agent (MDA) (commonly called mail server) to the mail user agent (MUA), also called the e-mail client. Most of today's clients are smartphones.

Basically, instead of having your device poll every hour, you get email the moment it comes in. Also, if you get email less frequently than every hour, there is no reason to waste battery and poll when none is there. It is now considered the holy grail of always connected mobile devices and the reason why devices like the Blackberry have become so popular. Now that it is built into WM5 and above to work with Exchange, WM devices are quickly becoming a standard work tool in the office. I could not live without it.

so if i use a pop email from an isp then i cant use this feature correct? i would have to setup an exchange server?

the only reason i use the kaiser over my nokia e61 is because of its ability to stream music and tv with its high speed data capabilities. I tried the att's speed for 1 day and had to bite the bullet and sign up with them. i still have my tmobile plan because i get so many minutes with my plan. once my rollover minutes start to accumulate i can leave tmobile.

Direct Push - Is this a tease or what?

Just up on Cingular' site. http://cingular.com/midtolarge/microsoft
nbf dated 3-22-06, and all indications are 1.08 ...
Suspect that HTC's site hasn't changed their file...
WTF ????
Steven
chow
It's not set to go live until Monday.
Someone shot their load early.
agree... someone put this on cingular's site to fast. HTC won't release the file til Monday
Why would I pay for this when I get direct push using summiters' 2.17 version?
I actually get the emails on my phone before it shows on my inbox on the pc.
Cingular is not charging for the ROM download.
The "paying" comes in if you're using Direct Push at all.
Now that it is officially launched, Cingular wants all DP users to be on a "special" (read expensive) DP rate plan.
If you're using DP over MEdia.Net it may keep working or it may be blocked via proxy. No one knows.
Cingular will only guarantee DP over a DP data plan.
There's some wisdom in this on Cingular's part. The default APN wap.cingular, lowers IP lease times when it gets busy. When your IP changes, the heartbeat breaks and isn't re-established until a 7 minute timout lapses on the 8125. The new plan will probably provide a different APN that holds IP leases longer. We've absolutely seen this issue on Cingular's network and have discussed the problem with them. Originally, it looked like we were going to have to roll up our own APN which lengthened lease timeouts since some of our 8125 equipped mucky-mucks were wining about occasional 7 minute delays.
As far as pricing goes, I believe it's $49.95 and includes unlimited data. This is the same that the standard unlimited data plan costs now IIRC. I'll get more info on this Monday when I chat with our Cingular about changing the plans of all our cooked rom users.
As pointed out, DP plan is $44.95/mo with a voice plan. Current PDA plan is $39.95/mo with voice plan and $44.95/mo without a voice plan. So it is not the same as unlimited data plan cingular has today.

MEdiaNet Unlimited

I see all these posts about MEdiaMax and the HTC phones, but what about MediaNet Unlimited? Are you legally allowed to use it with a PDA?
In the Terms/Conditions it says that the Media bundles are not to be used with a PDA, but MEdiaNet Unlimited is only MEdiaNet, no messaging, so it's not a bundle, right? As long as I don't tether the device, I'm legal, correct? (I don't have a laptop and my home is not in a 3G area, so what's the point?)

You dont want MediaNet Unlimited. What a bunch of marketing doublespeak!! I quote from the AT and T website:
"For full details on Messaging or MEdia Net, see the AT&T MEdia brochure, att.com/mediaterms. Pay-Per-Use Charges: Text/Instant Messaging 15¢/message; Picture/Video Messages 25¢/message; MEdia Net Browsing 1¢/KB. MEdia Net and MEdia Bundles are not available on PDAs/Pocket PCs, RIM® devices or LaptopConnect cards. If your usage of the Services (including unlimited data plans) on other carriers' wireless networks ("offnet usage") during any two consecutive months exceeds your offnet usage allowance, AT&T may at its option terminate your wireless service or access to data Services, deny your continued use of other carriers' coverage, or change your plan to one imposing usage charges for offnet usage. Your offnet usage allowance is equal to the lesser of 6 megabytes or 20% of the kilobytes included with your plan and for messaging plans the lesser of 3000 messages or 50% of the messages included with your plan. AT&T will provide notice that it intends to take any of the above actions and you may terminate your agreement."
To me that says you have unlimited use as long as you pay for usage at thier highest rate. Also, it specifies it does it is not for pocket PC's.
This plan is NOT intended for Pocket PC's (like yours) and since you only pay for the data you use (no free data at all) you pay top dollar for all the data you DO use. That means things like the weather plugins etc on yer phone that want to grab data off of the network on a regular basis you will pay for every kilobyte at the most expensive rate.
Technically its not legal, and even if it was, it is probably not in your best interest.
Its the same thing. Unlimited MediaNet was changed to Media Max 200. it was unlimited media net and 200 texts. They decided not to combine them anymore, so its media net again.
pdas can be used on media net, technically. its the same ip address and settings, but siince PDAs use more data, at&t charges a premium on PDA Max. I dont know what at&t will do if they audit your line.
I use media max 200 btw
so which is the maximum-unlimited and economical plan worth your recommendation other than the 200?
I don't have a reason to get the SMS bundles because I already have the Family Messaging Unlimited. I called and told the CRS I wanted Unlimited Internet usage added to my line, didn't specify which package, and that's what he told me I needed and he added it. If they overcharge me, you can better believe that they will have a phone call.
Just change it yourself on the extranet. Easy as pie.
Why would I change it? If they put me on the $15 plan, I'm going to use it, if they charge me then it's their CSR's fault, not mine.
Why pay more if that's what they gave me?

mostly correct, however...
They didn't really "change" them, the Unlimited MediaNet w/o text was designed for peolpe whom have an old texting plan, family texting, or otherwise a seperate texting plan and did not want to change it (or couldnt, for family unlimited)...
So they created MediaNet unlimited for the same price, without texting, to allow people to keep these plans..
I have 1000 texts for $10 (retired feature), so I went with MediaNet Unlimited seperatly
i'm on MM200 w/ tilt.... Icalled in and they did it for me so how was I supposd to know?
Do you have any idea how spoiled you all are in the US with those plans and offers. I envy you
Living in Taiwan , the kingdom of technology, I paid +700 USD for my Tytn II as we do not have combined offers at that level.
And as for Media... there is Emome from Chunghwa. 10 USD games from 5 years ago platforms.
And a monhtly minimal fee is here around 20-25 US without any Freebies.
ceevee369, why should you complain, too? Visit Myanmar to see how much it costs!!!
I have had MediaNet Unlimited @ $20/month for close to 2 years now (on a Treo 650, 680, 750 and now Tilt). It truely is unlimited, never had any issues.
ive had $20/unlimited since the 8125 and never had any issues either.. with the lovely 3g i do 300-400mb a day with mobitv+xm radio+google maps its great to have full 3g @ work and mostly everywhere.. granted i only pull 1 bar @ home of 3g/H outside of the house is 3-4 bars no issue.. never had a problem paying.. never been late so maybe that helps? who knows.
I use AT&T MediaNET unlimited with Tilt.
I downloaded the internet sharing tool (AT&T deleted it from the Tilt). Disabled proxy in the network connection - and voila, I have a wireless modem for my laptop with unlimited traffic. Speeds with enabled HSDPA go up to 80 KB/s where I'm using it. It's probably different in other areas.
I play BF 2142 through it (it's not bad, around 120 ping), download files, do all my regular stuff. I talked to the supervisor in AT&T and I'm pretty much sure that they will never impose "too much traffic" or find out that it tethers to the laptop.
I pay $20/mo for it for one phone.
Just my $.02

Same here.
Went from a sony ericsson in 2002-3 which the plan was originally signed up for to a ipaq 6515 then to kaiser.
Still paying $19.99/mo for unlimited HSDPA speeds here in DC.
i get unlimted medianet/ internet and 1500 text (unlimited m to m) for $20
well, hopefully ill be fine. I have been with cingular/att for almost 5 years with a perfect record and now running four lines on my family plan with unlmtd texts and now medianet unlimited on one line. plus I just extended my contract to pick up a tilt for 150 dolars... whaaaat?

Tell them the Tilt is for one of the other lines, not the one with medianet unlimited. As we've seen above it probably doesn't matter but I figure it's one less way to draw attention to your account. I got my Tilt as an upgrade on my daughter's line. I "upgraded" to a RAZR that my wife uses on her work-provided line and that's the phone with the medianet plan (I've got the MediaMax 200) assigned to it.

I have the exact same plan, i just went online and changed my plan, been this way for almost 2 years now. Never had an issue, I also run agile mobile and sync with 2 email accounts that are pretty active. On the website it doesn't say what plans you can or can't use, so thats my arguement if it ever comes up.
inneyeseakay: what has led you to believe that there is some kind of law that prevents you from using a data plan with your PDA phone? Certainly you are "legally" allowed to do so.
DarkDvr: when I had the stock AT&T Tilt ROM, I did find out that Internet Sharing was in the Windows folder, AT&T had just deleted the shortcut in your start menu. It should be called IntShrUI.exe. I believe someone on the forum here brought that to my attention. I just wanted to let you know in case you do a hard reset that you do not have to go through the trouble of downloading the Internet Sharing application again.
iPhone users only pay $20 a month for their unlimited data. The iPhone's browser displays far more data than Windows Mobile's default browser. Not only that, but Youtube is built in to the iPhone's interface, and videos certainly require a lot of data transfer. I have had Medianet unlimited for almost 2 years with PDA phones. If it is somehow against their terms, it is up to them to take action. I certainly do not feel as if I am "ripping off" AT&T somehow by continuing to use the plan I have had for quite a while. Last month I only used 5 MB of data, so I am not abusing it either.
AT&T has had a history of bias against PDA phones and smartphones. They let me pay $5 a month for 6 months for insurance for my phone which they did not even cover. I did not even know how to get to the page which showed the excluded phones, someone posted it on a forum. Regardless they didn't even refund my money.

T Mobile policy on HSDPA

This question has already been asked previously, but it was so long ago that the response is out of date.
Does anyone know T Mobiles official policy on HSDPA browsing. Is it available to regular webnwalk customers? Do you need to upgrade to Webnwalk plus or max to browse at those speeds? Are speeds capped on regular webnwalk?
Does anyone have any idea? Because I would rather save myself the extra £5 every month.
You do not get access to HSDPA with regular WNW, you must upgrade to Plus or Max. The only way you may be able to browse at HSDPA speeds with regular WNW is if you were one of the first batch of customers to sign up when they released their' 'unlimited' services (as opposed to the old 40mb service), although a sweep removed this from the majority of accounts.
I was told by two seperate T Mobile Employees that I should get HSDPA on regular WNW and restriction of the standard service was only on content not speed.
However I was told by a third employee that I would need to stay on WebnWalk plus for HSDPA. Yet I cannot see these terms referenced on their website at all.
Think I have a case if I downgrade?
Mmm...
Well i started a new Contract with tmobile (already have an exisiting one, but impatient waiting for the Diamond!) and I used to have the Web and Walk plus added to my account.
However, ive noticed that I get HSDPA on my new phone using the standard web n walk £7.50 package.
This is also what I found out when looking at the tmobile website:
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/mobile-internet/on-your-phone/
Scroll to the bottom and then click on
Web n Walk Legal Stuff.
For the £7.50 a month Web n Walk Package
"Fair use policy applies: Subject to coverage. Compatible handset required. Roaming charges apply. Not applicable to connection via CSD. *To ensure a high quality of service for all our customers a 1GB (of data both sent and received in the UK) per month fair use policy applies. If you exceed 1GB per month, we may tell you to reduce your future use. If you again exceed 1GB per month, we may tell you that we are going to apply network protection controls, resulting in a reduced network speed for 14 days. If you exceed 1GB per month for a third time , we may tell you that we are going to apply further network protection controls, resulting in a reduced network speed until you upgrade your price plan to include a larger data allowance. We do not permit use of this service to provide modem access for a computer or for peer to peer file sharing, internet phone calls or instant messaging. Roaming charges apply."
and for the Plus package
"If your pay monthly plan already includes web'nwalk, Mobile Broadband Plus will be £5.00 extra a month and if you don't, it will be £12.50 extra a month. Mobile Broadband Plus will stay on your account until you ask us to remove it. You'll need a compatible laptop, compatible phone and mobile broadband coverage. Remember that you can't use your plan to make internet phone calls. If you use your plan outside of the UK, we'll add roaming charges to your pay monthly account, please see t-mobile.co.uk//broadband for more details. This plan comes with a fair use policy of 3GB a month. We'll monitor how much you send and receive each calendar month so that we can protect our network for all our Mobile Broadband customers. If you use more than your fair use policy amount, we won't charge you any more, but we may restrict how you can use your plan, depending on how often you go over your amount and by how much."
and for the Max Package
"Mobile Broadband Max is £22.50 extra a month and is for use in the UK only. You'll need a compatible laptop, a compatible phone and mobile broadband coverage. If you use your plan outside of the UK, we'll add roaming charges to your pay monthly account. This plan comes with a fair use policy of 10GB a month. We'll monitor how much you send and receive each calendar month so that we can protect our network for all our Mobile Broadband customers. If you use more than your fair use policy amount, we won't charge you any more, but we may restrict how you can use your plan, depending on how often you go over your amount and by how much."
Now i dont see anywhere suggesting that the speed increases with the more you spend, but the Data Allowance and restrictions eg Using Instant Messaging and VOIP are added on with the more you pay.
Hope this is of some use
Unfortunately incosistent information is an issue with T-Mob. Gets on my nerves! I've been with T-Mob for 4 years now so not much experience with the other operaters so I don't know if you get the same issues there.
You are restricted on content with regular WNW, but also on the speed. This was the case a few months ago at least, with further restrictions on P2P e.t.c. being implimented I don't think they would have reversed this policy.
You won't really have a case if you downgrade unfortunately, you'll just be told to move back to Plus or Max.
Hmm.. I know someone else with a Diamond on T Mobile who has regular web n walk (he joined two weeks ago via expansys deal). He gets the big H and little H on his screen in the central London area. Does this not mean hes getting HSDPA?
Sounds like he is getting it. Strange, as I deifnately read that they were no longer including it. Plus I have a friend with an N95 on regular WNW, who doens't get it.
As mentioned I will double check!
Web and Walk definitely includes HSDPA browsing, I've sold the product ever since it was launched. Web and Walk plus just allows you to use your phone/pda as a modem and increases fair useage policy to 3gb. Web and walk max allows 10gb and allows VOIP which other plans do not. They rarely restrict your speed unless you really take the p*ss on your usage. One customer used 8gb on the standard web and walk package and they didn't even notify him, let alone reduce his speed ! They can however tell if you start to use your phone as a modem or use VOIP, they will then eventually ask you to change your package accordingly.
hope this helps

Is there any documentation you could scan in or a link on the T Mobile website that confirms all this. I hate getting different answers from different employees whenever I call T..
I have always been told (by Tmob shop staff and tele customer services) that HSDPA is included on WNW and I have always had access to HSDPA on WNW without paying for WNW plus or Max.
I agree that T Mob can sometimes be a little inconsistent. But their customer service phone staff and shop staff have always been willing to help. That could be because I am on a reasonably hefty tariff and was one of the first to have an Ameo (ouch!) but I don't think so
PS I don't work for TMob!
In the terms and conditions of web and walk:
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/services/mobile-internet/on-your-phone/
There is nothing that differentiates on what speed you connect with, only how you connect. It actually costs t-mobile less to carry data across a HSDPA or UMTS network than across a GSM network (i.e GPRS), so they are happy to let you connect at any speed. The only reason that web and walk plus and max exist is so t-mobile can make extra cash from people connecting to their high speed networks with their laptops via their phone or PDA as a modem. Otherwise their mobile broadband products (dongles) at £15 per month just wouldn't sell. Max exists just to stop people using VOIP instead of normal calling plans for free and gives them a share of the revenue when people use VOIP to call abroad.
hope that makes sense
Mickey
oh and by the way, T-mobile are in the final stages of sharing their 3g and HSDPA networks with three (who have by far the largest HSDPA coverag in the UK) so t-mobile's HSDPA will get much better in the next couple of months.
Mickey
Yes HSDPA is standard with T-Mobile - and is HSUPA now as of a couple weeks ago if you have a compatible handset which the Diamond is. And it is whippet fast I can tell you!
On the £7.50 option you can actually still use your phone as a modem but if that was detected they have the right to ask you to stop or move up a level. I've occasionally used it as a modem after I moved down from the £12.50 tariff and never had any issues with them over it. If you stay within your usage of 1gb I hardly see as it makes any difference to them.

AT&T Tilt with BlackBerry Connect - can't use on a BlackBerry plan?

After being told by AT&T that it would work, I purchased a Tilt and asked to be signed up on the International Blackberry plan so that I could use the Blackberry Connect for data worldwide.
I haven't rec'd the Tilt yet, but I did receive my account info, so I called AT&T today to make the change. They informed me that because it is not a Blackberry device, they can't put me on the BlackBerry International plan.
Has anyone used a Blackberry Plan on the AT&T Tilt? I can probably convince them I have an unlocked Blackberry (or just buy a cheap one) and then try using it on the Tilt - does anyone know if that would work? They are telling me that their network would not allow it to work since the Tilt isn't a Blackberry and I would be charged for data use since the Blackberry plan only includes Blackberry data.
I was told last week that it wouldn't be a problem (and even recorded the call!), but now that I have made the purchase, they are saying it won't work.
I really would rather stick with the Tilt, but I need the BB International Plan (unlimited international data and e-mail), so I guess I'll have to return it for a BB unless anyone has experience with this.
Thanks!
i'm using my tilt with the blackberry plan (domestic only). since this is a tilt, they have it activated for both blackberry and media.net
i can't speak to the international plans however.
I would ask to speak to some other rep. The support for blackberry connect is well documented on their web site.

Thanks! I did try a few reps today - of course I couldn't get the same one I had last week who told me it would work!
Did you need to get the media.net plan for data? I thought with the regular blackberry plan you would get both data and e-mail on the Tilt if you were using the blackberry connect software?
Did they give you an actual blackberry plan? They said I had to have a "blackberry connect" plan, and not a regular blackberry plan.
I bought my tilt online and selected the plan that way. I even had a rep call me asking why I had it on there. I told them I am not the account holder and they better not make any changes to the account. They didn't. Sorry if this didn't help you, just for any other people looking to do the same thing.
I wonder if you bought an old Blackberry phone and called them with the IMIE if they would activate that phone then just switch the SIM.
Call back again and tell them you want the PDA Connect for BlackBerry® Connect Unlimited . The code is KRB9
I'm no blackberry expert. My understanding is that blackberry normally uses the blackberry service and browser to access the internet. On the tilt the phone is activated for both media.net and blackberry service. The media.net is used to browse the internet normally. The blackberry connect establishes a permanent connection to the blackberry service. I do know that I told them specifically that i wanted to use it with a BES server at work (Blackberry Enterprise).
I've had the tilt working with Blackberry connect on both ATT and Tmobile.

I had a similar problem. The "solution" they set up for me is the pda blackberry connect unlimited combined with a 20Mb pda smart international plan. That gives me 20Mb a month of international data in about twenty countries (the list has probably grown) without roaming data rates. This works OK for me because country I cared about (Japan) is on the list. Heck, the only reason I bought the Tilt was because it would work in Japan and BBConnect is available for it. The only problem is the 20Mb limit. That isn't a big problem for me because I'm not there for large stretches of time. YMMV.
If that works for you, great. If not, take it back and wait a couple of weeks for the Blackberry Bold. It will also have 2100MHz UMTS and you can get the BB International plan.
I managed to get them to set it up by getting a BlackBerry Bold and giving them the IMEI. I never actually opened the Bold box - just used the IMEI to convince them to give me the plan.
I put the SIM in the tilt, installed the Blackberry Connect and all seems to be well.
The BlackBerry International plan is the only one with unlimited data, and since I spend most of my time outside of the USA, the other "Connect" plans just won't work for me.
I have a question about the media.net - I assume I won't be charged for data on it since I have the BB International plan that includes unlimited data? Has anyone else used this?

Activating sim card on S8--Not Compatible With Grandfathered Unlimited Data Plan

I purchased a unlocked Galaxy S8 on Amazon. I also purchased a nano sim card and just activated it through the web site. I then get a message "Device ID xxxxxx is not compatible with your current features and requires a change of features."
I currently have a grandfathered plan with unlimited data and therefore am not happy about losing it. Anyone know if there is a way around this? Would it make any difference that it is a unlocked versus Verizon model? I also have a business account and wonder if this makes any difference.

On further review of this, I'm not sure if it is actually taking away the unlimited data.
My current bill describes my grandfathered plan as, "Email & Web Unlimited"
The choices they are now offering begins with one called "Unlimited Email & Web for Smartphones (personal email).
I'm wondering if they are the same. I'm questioning this because of the message that the device "is not compatible with your current features and requires a change of features." Plus it then offers a choice of unlimited data plans. Does this mean that the unlimited web is not data beyond web browsing? Does it include data for apps, audio streaming, video streaming?
The description doesn't make it clear either. It says:
Get unlimited access to the Internet and your personal email accounts.
Check and send personal emails when you're out and about.
Access up to 10 POP3 and IMAP email accounts.
Enjoy unlimited Internet access.
The Email and Web for BlackBerry and Email and Web for Smartphone Features are designed for personal, consumer use and are not compatible with some Internet email service offerings or with email applications utilizing Smartphone Enterprise Server, Smartphone Desktop Software, Wireless Sync or Wireless Sync Enterprise Server or Good™ Mobile Messaging. These features cannot be used to tether your device to laptops, personal computers or other devices for any purpose other than syncing of data; any other use is not permitted using these features. Service is only available in the National Enhanced Services and Extended National Enhanced Services Rate and Coverage Areas. See information on roaming in Canada and Mexico at www.verizonwireless.com/naroaming.
I got it figured out. I went to the last screen before confirmation and was able to compare everything from old to new phone. In this screen both described the data plan as Unlimited Email and Web.
For the most part everything is the same except 1) the price is lower because my 20% business account discount applies to the data plan now but didn't before, and 2) while I didn't pick it, it placed a block on video calling (but says this doesn't apply to third party apps). As I never used Verizon's video calling, this doesn't matter.
I went ahead and activated and data is present as before. Hopefully there won't be any surprises down the road, but for now all seems well.
