Brand new, and a bad screen - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I just received a new Kaiser, and to my dismay, its DOA.
First, the boot up stopped at the main Windows screen, and no screen taps would activate the next step. Also, the top half of the screen, above the windows logo was blue, and the rest of the screen was the familiar green.
Second. After a hard reset, it came up and on the today screen, I noticed a white horizontal band at the top by the (start/Logo). I called HTC and they agreed, it was defective.
Anyone else hear of this?

Thats a bummer - but it happens.

my screen has a dead pixel on the lower left hand side of the screen, but i think it gives the phone personality. ;-)

Nope, so far your the first, I'm on 4 forums with people who have TyTn's
Return!!

Got 2 Dead Pixels

sounds like the issues i had with mine actually. mine ended up not even booting after a day or two

Yes, on HowardForums
I am lurking a number sites myself as I try to see all the emails of all the complaints, before I buy the Tilt (although I am also predicting a price drop on 11/4, the day after the rebates expire).
Howard Forums has some people talking about DOA screens as well.

Yes, me too

Me too!!
Got my Tilt yesterday !!! I was all happy, I had aready read all the posts and downloaded my HTC ROM, I was a Pro already (in theory). Started my phone and it would only boot until the "Windows Tab screen to configure". My screen would not accept the Tab to move on. Damn tilt!!! he couldnt wait for me to break him !!!! He had to go and break himself !

I got a dead pixel too anyone got the number to htc in the us?

I also had this phenomena, but I found that if I held down the OK-button while tapping it worked. Undocumented feature??? Now...the problem is that this phenomena persists after the initial setup...and I have no idea of howto fix this.

The only problem with that approach is that you will always see folk posting more problems than good news on the forums. In general, my feeling is that the Tilt/Kaiser is a pretty reliable, fast device with relatively few freezes and need for soft/hard resets. Physically, yes I have seen some reports of hardware issues, but to be honest I think they are quite a bit fewer than I have seen for other devices around. Compared to the 8525/Hermes then the step up to the Kaiser is marked by far fewer soft/hard resets and speed is good if you are running a relatively "clean" ROM or the standard HTC one.
Mike

End of story.
I Returned my faulty one, Bought a new one and is now a VERY happy Kaiser-er!

I'm on my 9th Droid 3 replacement...

Thought I'd share my story with you all in hopes that some of you may have had similar problems I've had with the Droid 3, perhaps in an effort to give me hope that one day I'll receive one that isn't shot to hell in some way shape or form.
1.) Brand-new, upgraded from the Droid 2 around the first week of August. This one lasted about a month before the slider just gave out and became so loose that it would open up by itself if I held the phone horizontally. No case was used on it prior, so I'm not sure what caused this. Never dropped it either (I baby the hell out of my phones).
2.) Replacement came in, no big deal. Attempted to slide it open right out of the box. Guess what? Wouldn't budge. Literally jammed shut. Sent it back the same day.
3.) Boot-looping from hell and 3G drop all the time in places where I should have full reception (i.e., my house). 5.6.890 was not released at this time.
4.) - 7.) Every single one had a completely jacked up sliding mechanism that would either squeek, crack, scratch, jam, or completely tear apart the left plastic portion next to the keyboard within just 5-10 slides. Unacceptable. 1 or 2 of these (lost count) also loved to boot-loop for no apparent reason. Mind you, I tried every trick in the book. Tried never installing ANY apps, tried replacing the extended battery with the stock one, tried replacing the SD-card with a different one, and hard-resetted several times. To no avail.
8.) Replacement #8. 5.6.890 is released, no more boot-looping it seems, but this one has a vibrating mechanism from hell. Whenever it would vibrate, it would sound like electricity. Haptic feedback on it felt like voltage. Unacceptable.
9.) Just received replacement #9 today. This <MAY> be a stupid thing to complain about, but wherever I press on the phone, the damn thing squeeks like it's falling apart. Press the home button ever so slightly...*squeek.* Press the back button...*rattle*. Wipe the phone down with a cloth...*rattle rattle crackle crackle squeek squeek squeeeeeeeeek*. No matter how little pressure I use, it squeeks as if its falling apart. The sliding mechanism, however, feels solid and amazing on this one. Clicks and holds tight, but OH MY GOD IS SQUEEKS AND RATTLES SO MUCH. Never had/heard this problem on the other 8 replacements.
Someone shoot me =/
Also, none of these problems arose post-root nor did I root any of the ones I owned. I have rooted my brothers and I'm currently using his to text out new ROMs and such....but it's freaking annoying. I want my own to play with and flash.
Does anyone else have weird problems? I may be a little OCD when it comes to stuff like this, but I sure as hell didn't pay 230 dollars for a boot-looping/voltage vibrating/3g dropping/SQUEEKING phone.
...does anyone else's "squeek" or "rattle" when the press down on the bottom-right or top-right corners of the phone when it's closed?

Man, sounds like you got stuck getting all the bad batch phones = / I'm really rough on my phone, and I've had none of these problems. Hopefully you can get a good one, cuz this phone is quite fantastic once rooted and rom'd. The only complaint I've ever had was the weak stock battery life, but even that isn't that bad since I've modded it.

You've replaced it just as many times as well huh? That's crazy.
the same thing happened with my droid x they all sucked they acutely had to send me a brand new one still in the box ....to fix the issues i was having ... lets just say thank God Verizon not selling cars there 100 point inspection test dosent work very well .. every time i call vzw they insure me it was put to the test i say well some one must of been blind because there is a light shining throw the screen when i just put the battery in it lol
Well I'm on the 6th, satisfied with this one so far. Most of them had the vibrate problem you mentioned. Some had light bleeding out of the screen near the softkeys. One the screen would randomly get distorted, almost like the top half of the screen was twisted and flipped around. And yes I do hear some squeaking on this one it's the back cover for mine anyway, taking it on and off too many times I assume.
Yea I'm not too sure about this 100-point inspection they keep referring to. How the hell do they miss something like what you mentioned...or an insanely squeeky/loose screen? Or even a 100% jammed screen that won't slide up? 100-point my ass.
Also, just to clarify...I absolutely love the Droid 3; I just want one that isn't jacked up. Even if they offered me a brand-new Bionic or something, I'd refuse. I love the D3, I just want one that isn't insanely jacked.

Oh yea, I forgot to mention that I've had the light-bleeding around the softkeys as well (specifically the last one I got, number 8). It was only on the bottom-right portion. Very noticeable and very annoying.
its sad becuse the razr looks nice but seems how i have had so many issues with droid x to droid x2 to droid 3 i think i am all out of spending my money on them but there attenna design is by far the best .... oh i am so torn ... i just miss 2 years ago having my droid in my hands .. life was good back then ...
I'm on my second, no issues at all.. After a 3rd replacement I would have *****ed to the point where they were sending me a new phone not a refurbished.

I did, after the 6th. I got a supervisor and she was a real B-word. I tore her apart and she refused to send me a new one. Don't think they ever would, because I was on the phone with her for about 15 minutes and she refused.
believe me i have but they just changed there policy you can keep getting as many refurbish phones. it used to be after 5 they would try to get you into something else ... well lets see the offered me the charge and tunderbolt i exsplaned to them that the only comparable device to this dorid 3 is the bionic and they wont offer that .. i am not going to down grade a dul core with the crap of last year test market no thank you ...

My D3 has had no real problems other than what is common to a new phone (mostly software related) and occasional operator error. I cannot calculate the statistical probability against randomly receiving nine consecutive bad phones. Either someone has targeted you to receive all the junk ones or you live somewhere with frequent over-the-top EMPs (or maybe hell). With similar experiences with the other phones as well, you must be living under some kind of curse!

I get yet another one in the mail tomorrow...
Create a sob story and they send you a different phone. Its how i went from the droid x to the droid 3 without having an upgrade :] keep complaingin on the phone and say you want a different more reliable device thats in the same range. Then say something about the bionic {or differen phone} and they will give up and give it to you for free. just have to pay for a battery

GPU / Display Crash on Wake Up

Got my N4 at the T-Mobile store on Newbury St. in Boston today, has been great so far, noticed an issue though. Was using it moderately for the better part of the day without any problems. Tonight upon taking it out of my pocket and waking it up, the display immediately went solid white, followed by a wave of discolored pixels moving from left to right across the screen. It then rebooted itself and the issue has not reoccurred since. I've seen the exact same thing happen with an LCD before on an Intel laptop while fudging around to get the graphics drivers for an Ubuntu install up and running. Guessing this is only a driver issue based on that experience. Not about to sound the knee jerk panicked OCD RMA freakout air raid party siren at this point as it's been a really solid device other than that, but worth reporting nonetheless.

I don't know. The glue in the side bars hadn't binded properly for some devices and leaked into the LCD, causing a slight yellow tint. Won't happen with the 2nd Batch onwards, though.
I'd try to run a graphic heavy game to see if the gpu is failing.
If it does again, return it.

Bought mine from a T-Mobile store in Dearborn Michigan yesterday morning and mine has been working perfectly. I have not had any yellow tint issues or rattles etc. I am very happy with the device, sold my GNEX and hour after I bought the N4 and not looking back. I did get the T-Mobile insurance on the device, I feel it's a good thing to do since it is a new product release.

Could also be a glitch in the driver. Have had plenty of similar occasions with my Xperia Neo when trying out buggy ROMs.
Definitely has nothing to do with glue drying. I'll push the GPU a little bit today. But when this issue occurred, remember, the phone had been idle my pocket. Seems like its more a matter of waking the phone up than a matter of the GPU being under any duress.

I bought the insurance as well. Do you know if I were to "lose" the phone and claim it through insurance and pay the deductible to replace it with another one would the old N4 be useless? Do they burn their phones like Verizon does using the IMEI?

As a last resort perhaps clean slate by reflashing the image. Question is if Tmobile makes their modified image available. Or, if you don't care about Tmobile customizations just flash the official Nexus 4 image.

It's a Nexus - I'm quite certain the only modification T-Mobile made is a $50.00 restocking fee sticker on the box.
Just a followup on this, I haven't seen the white screen/wave of fading pixels issue since the first time. However, I found one dead pixel (black) a couple days ago, and today I found a brand new second dead pixel about an inch away from the first one. I have the feeling this display is simply defective. I bought it from T-Mobile. They don't have any left in stock to exchange for right now. Looks like it's gonna be a while to get this one swapped out.

[Q] Stuck pixel/s - fix, return, or live with?

Hi guys,
So technically I'm on my third HTC One, the first bulged at the USB port with a scuff, and the second was opened in store and had similar bulging so I refused it.
The third seemed good, and so I took it. I went home, set it all up, checked for bad pixels and it was grand. So i set it up, installed all my stuff, unlocked the bootloader and rooted etc.
So, dial forward a week, and I notice a brighter spot on a white background, right on the edge of the screen, on the left. I'd guess its a few pixels, as it is kinda triangular, and bigger than just one I believe. Using a pixel tester tool, they only show up on green (looks more white) and white (looks brighter), not on black, red or blue. So, I'm guessing its a group of sub-pixels.
It's one of those things - it doesn't bother me that much except I know its there, so I get drawn to it, particularly on white browser screens. I've briefly tried a pixel fixer app but it didn't fix it. So, I need some advice really, I love the phone now that I have (had) one that was perfect, but this has disappointed me. I'd hate to get back into a cycle of more returns for more issues like overhang, camera etc, if they even have any in stock. So, has anyone any advice on a possible fix, as that would be the best solution?
If not, given I've unlocked the bootloader and rooted and stuff, am I likely to encounter some resistance trying to exchange this? I got it from Three, and I intend to call round to them shortly to talk about it, but wanted some advice first.
Thanks for any help,
Matt
If it isn't too annoying I say live with it. You'll get used to it eventually.
If you replace it again there's a good chance you'll get one with a worse problem.
Replaced
In the end, I went with the replacement - sat in the store and checked off a list of the common faults I've seen haha, from aluminium quality to video hissing!
Think I've finally got a great one; it had a different batch number, HT32WW, as compared to HT338W for both the previous two. Very pleased! I can hopefully now relax - bar any more sudden dead pixels!
I'll add that Three were really great about it, very apologetic, I dunno why they have a reputation for poor customer service, maybe their call centres? Anyway, yeah, kudos to them!
Anybody saying live with it is a total idiot. Its like buying a car and saying it has a crack on the window but live with it. If its broken, change it! Its free and you deserve a problem free device for the price.
Yeah, and given that attitude I had Amazon send me three devices in a row, and none of them is free of dead pixels (no gaps etc. nonetheless). If you're going for pure you might have to stay strong to finally receive the one you've been waiting for .

Had it for less than a week and screen dead

Last night my phone got a text and when I took it out my pocket the screen would not turn on. It was just blank. The buttons next to the home button still light up and the LED light still flashes. Vibrate still works etc. I took the battery out and out it back in... nope the screen is buggered. It has no water damage and it hasn't been dropped etc.
Just thought I would post this in case anyone has any similar problems.
I'm so angry If I'm being honest... my phone store wouldn't even send it away for me... they asked me to phone customer services and pack it and send it away myself. I have exams etc so its something I refused to do. Thankfully another store helped me out but I have never been so angry at a combination of companies. I have already spend £100 up front for the phone. Now I have no phone and apparently there is none in stock so I'll have to wait until they are ready. Not even given a replacement.

I had a similar issue with my first S4. It randomly rebooted numerous times and I had it for a little under a day. I took it back the next day and swapped out my white S4 with a black one and all has been well thus far. My buddy also had an issue with his screen as well. He went to put a case on it and the screen flickered and died. He too had to get a replacement. Your situation is a little more drastic but it seems we aren't the only ones with screen issues.

It is ridiculous that the screens are faulty in the first place but if they could just give me a new one like yours I would have been as happy as larry. Did you lose all the apps etc you had downloaded? I bought ice age and everything =/
apparently my phone company only replaces new items within 7 days. If my screen broke tonight instead of last night I would not have been given a replacement and would have got a "re-furbished" one. ARRRHHHH I would have torn the place down if they had said that to me!
I've had got mine 4/29 and have had no issue except for that lag when to much crap is open in the background.

I had my phone for about 2 days and I noticed that the screen would flicker. Since it was my first Amoled I just figured it was something I would have to get used too. Well the flicker started to get worse and even made it difficult to read anything on the phone. So I took it into sprint and told them I wanted a new one, not some returned or beat up phone.
There was a problem with the screen after all and they did give me a new in box phone. Haven't had an issue since. With any new product it just seems you might get lucky.

Dead Pixels

I received my brand new Note 8 on Saturday and was disappointed to see that I had a small cluster of dead pixels right at the bottom middle of the screen (near the "home" button). After running a "stuck pixel fixer" app for an hour I managed to get this cluster back to one dead pixel that was showing no signs of life.
Given the price of the phone I decided to return it for an exchange, so have sent it back today and will not get a Note 8 back until later in the week.
Has anyone else had any dead pixel issues? I know it bad luck and can happen to anyone at any time, but I would like to see if anyone else has had problems, just out of personal interest.

You want to see a picture of a dead pixel? I didn't have another phone to hand to take one (and a screenshot doesn't work, because you know...it's a hardware issue!) Imagine a tiny black dot somewhere on the screen on all colours except black - it really is very small and can easily be mistaken for a spec of dust on your screen until you notice that it never goes away.

Rotten luck especially as you now have to wait even more time for a replacement. Mine, so far, is fine but I bought the Nexus S that was made by Samsung way back and that had a dead pixel problem. I returned it to the outlet the same day and got a new one. Its a pig when this happens.
At least you are intelligent and reasonable enough to realise that a lemon will happen with all such devices. Shame you have to wait though. :crying:
Ryland :highfive:
None here. I would immediately return the phone for an exchange.
i have the same issue on my phone, but it is on the top of my screen
This happened to me. Received my phone on the 7th, placed another order on the 8th, which I received today, and returned the defective one.
Just return it, be done with it.
