TomTom 6 question - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I've been playing with TomTom 6 on my phone (not the newest version) and I came accross an annoying issue.
When I go to look up a destination from my contacts, the interface is horribly horribly slow. I time in the first letter of a contact and it takes 3 seconds before it lets me enter the next letter.
Also, it seems no combination of puttng address information into my contacts satisfies TomTom. It just does a horrible job of understanding pretty straight forward addresses in my contacts, and half the time prompts me to re-enter the contact address because it can't figure it out. This is not an issue at all with google maps for example.
Anyone can tell me how to format these address correctly in the contact list to get TomTom to understand them? Anyone know why it's so damn slow to use a contact as a destination?
I'm also curious what other software might be comparable to tom tom, but perhaps has a better ability to integrate with contacts, maybe even understand addresses better.

Recommendations for good IMAP email client???

I know this is not the place to ask this question, but you guys are experts and I would think you would have the best answer to this question. I need an email client for an IMAP server with TLS...actually it's a Cyrus IMAP server running on SuSE 9.0. Outlook is alright, but I can't just send an email, rather I have to send and receive at the same time. I've tried WebIS mail, but it seems to be really slow.
What are you folks using?
Thanks,
Tom
ProfiMail 2.24 from LonelyCatGames

Thanks! I've downloaded it and am going to try it out.

So I have it working. I setup a Rule not to download mail over 2 days old, but it still wants to download my 3300+ emails in my IMAP Inbox. I've read the manual, but can't figure out how to overcome this. Any thoughts? If you want to PM me, feel free.
Tom
Use WEbIS mail 2.11 or Q Mail.....I use Q-Mail....it is the best.....tried Profimail but no good as compared to these.
Hi
As we seem to have warmed up the mail topic is there any solution to an old problem of mine?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=80049#80049
MDAIIIUser,
A simple solution to your problem is a carrier pigeon. Hahahahaha. oooh, too much coffee.
I found that an IMAP email service works best. I use linuxmail.org. If offers great spam filtering (sometimes too good) and since they offer IMAP as well as POP (which I never use) I can get the same mail at my office, home, PDA, brother's house, guest computer....anywhere. Dump the activesync and outlook/smtp idea and try imap. Linuxmail.org, also has the ability to check POP servers for mail.
I just thought having an imap server might work better for you than regular POP. Linuxmail.org is $25/year, but I'm sure there are others.

Tom
Do I read you in the way that linuxmail.org will pick up my mail at pop.mypopmail.com and I will pick up this mail from them, thus I keep [email protected].
You see I am not looking for a [email protected]
dig ? or was that to short?

Oh, I dig Honeybunny. I'm totally down with that. Yo, yo... (I really need to stop drinking so much coffee).
Linuxmail.org (or others...I just run Linux hence my reason for this) can go out, pick up my email from gmail, yahoo, (not sure about hotmail...rememeber linux-user) and put it into my Linuxmail account. Since you're using an STMP account from say, Google, you can always sendmail thru that service. Check on Linuxmail, send on Google. The only downside with that is you won't be able to keep a copy of your sent mail on your IMAP.
This company looks pretty good too: http://1300.runbox.com/ I might test them out, but I don't want to ditch my linuxmail account. Take a look at them.
Tom
One other quick note...for work, we have an IMAP server and I have a Tmobile account for email as well. When I'm traveling (I'll be in the UK June 19th if anyone wants to get together) I can get email from my IMAP server and I will send via my Tmobile account. Tmo has a feature where you specify your email (say, acme.com) and when I send mail on my i-mate it goes thru the Tmo service, but you would see it as [email protected] instead of [email protected]. Its pretty cool.
I'm not too keen on Messaging because it won't allow me to send without receiving first....which is just really, really stupid. I use WebIS Mail to just shoot out an email to someone via the Tmo service. WebIS Mail has got it's own set of issues that I'm trying to deal with now.
Food for thought. Feel free to PM me if you want. I can call ya too.
Tom
hmmmm, I have solved it in a different way ...
mostly due to often accessing my mail from different locations and at the same time willing to keep my mail in one place safe, easy for download ...... I decided to invest in piece of hardware called Linux based Toshiba Magnia SG20 being among other very clever email server for both POP3 and IMAP mail service, ok it was an expense .... but finally now I can access my mail from virtually everywhere and have my mail traffic and storage off the computer I currently use, I can download necessary mail and respond easily, synchronization is no longer an issue with WebIS Mail ;-))
I made my work's IMAP server from an PIII800, 40GB drive, and 1GB RAM. I installed SuSE 9.0 and Cyrus IMAP, Postfix, spamassassin, Sendmail, etc... Cost=$90 and I can access it from anywhere in the world. The computer was an employee's computer which was upgraded. I was going to toss it, but decided to make a mailserver out of it. SuSE was already installed on my work computer, so it really didn't cost me much.
I have to admit, the Toshiba looks interesting. Too bad they don't make it anymore.
While I can take a new Mini Mac and do the same thing for about $500 on a personal level, it's really not worth spending that much time for a personal email server. I'm happy with third party providers.
WebIS is still not running well, so I dumped it and I'm sticking with Messaging. I tried ProfiMail and that had some drawbacks as well.
Tom
Boys and thier toys, 1 gig memory, bit of overkill or not. <Grin>.
Sure its a solution, ms exchange with active sync would work fine for me to, oh yes and my own domain, mx record and a fix ip.... but...
Not all of use are teck heads. No offence but should there not be a solution for say USD 29.95.
Anyway Webis lets you move sent items to a different folder (as in to the active sync folder). Now will have to play with that, work out how to set webis as default mail app. I have now set up up a pop account/folder and that option has gone. Find my sms and waste a lot of time to end up junking it. Oh well what else to do untill a new rom comes out. Still think it sucks unless you are a corparate user with all that nice infra.
Thanks tom
Could someone recommend me an email client that does imap and it's posibble to set on which days of the week from when till when and how often to check for mail automatically?

Instead of a fixed IP, you could run DynDNS like I do. It tracks your current IP and reroutes everything to your computer. I have cable internet, so my IP changes every couple months, or after a power outage. Your DNS and MX would point to DynDNS and DynDNS would route folks to you. It's a pretty sweet setup.

I completely agree...about the tech heads. Someone should make something more simple, but I think the expense would be too high since it entails a complete computer system. Linux has an email server built into it while Windows does not, but then you have downsides to using Linux as well.

I rarely use Activesync so setting up my email for that is pointless. When I want to send an email, I want to send it now...not when I can get to my computer to run activesync. You should try finding a email company that has an IMAP server. Once you have that, you'll never want POP again.

If you're talking about doing it on your pda, it's not going to happen. You can set email programs to check every x minutes, but that's about it. If you have your gprs on 24 hours a day, then it might be possible, but otherwise I don't see this as an option with the 3 email programs I've played with (Messaging, WebIS Mail, ProfiMail).
Tom
Ok, so I up the e-mail stream without a paddle.
BTW, The Activesyn I only use to get the contents of my mail box of my Laptop and on to my device. I send mail over wifi on the pop acoount (then have to copy the sent item to the activesycn folder, then sync to get it on the laptop)
I was aware about the DynDNS, won't help my much live between to families, two households and the only thing fixed in my life is the tel number of my Phone and the fact I have a laptop, so no space for hardware that cant be baged in a minute.
So Looks like I need to get my own mymail.com address and some hosting that gives me IMAP.
With all that done still have not found a good E-mail client. (q-mail?)
What was the thread on that subject ???? <GRIN>
Email anytiMe is possible.
yes! Download email any day and anytime without gprs on is possible. Use npop freeware and set it to download email upon execution theN use powerstart Shareware to schedule it to exeCute npop at any day and what time as you like. it will Connect gprs then download then disconnect, perfect!
testdebug
Googled Powerstart and got to many hits, have a homepage were I read what the app does? Found npop.
testdebug,
Keep in mind the question was IMAP, not POP. Will it work on IMAP?
Thanks,
Tom

how about fully-functioning gmail on kaiser?

I've tried opera mini and opera mobile with no help. I am looking to have full access to my calendar, gAIM, and all those neat little services I can get when I open gmail on my computer.
I've been try to patiently wait for opera mobile 9 but wtf!
and I don't want to involve outlook, IMAP or any other BS "sign up for this" service. I want to load my browser on my Kaiser and see my full calendar (which my wife and I are able to share/edit in real time which rocks), on the go from anywhere...
I don't get it. What services are you looking for exactly? If you wanted to see the GMAIL website exactly as you would on the computer albeit some small differences, logon and select FULL view instead of mobile view on the bottom. Other than that, can you be more specific as to what your looking for?
No, the "FULL" gmail experience in Opera or anything I try does NOT include the gchat list on the left, the gdocument access and absolutely does not load the gcalendar as it looks on my computer. It loaded some cruddy un-editable single page calendar.
I'm sure that this isn't what you are wanting, but thought that I'd throw it out there anyway...
Have you ever tried OggSync? It allows you to sync your calendar with Google Calendar directly. I use it all the time now so that I'm not tied to Outlook. Basically every calendar that I have in Google is sync'd to a category on my Tilt.
As for Google Docs, this page (http://www.google.com/google-d-s/whatsnew.html) claims that you can access them via docs.google.com/m but I haven't tried that yet.
yeah, thanks for the heads up on oggsync but I'm done with "syncing" I've done it in the past and it's a pain, never smooth and NOT real-time, i.e. changes made aren't immediately seen on my wife's calander. The way we keep it now if she adds something to her shared gcalendar I immediately see it on mine and vice versa. With mobile calendar you only get to add, no edit and can't view months at a time easily (or at all?).
Was hoping Opera 9 would fix this.
P.S. I realize these are processor intensive scripts to make g-stuff look so awesome but I think (read: hope) the kaiser should be able to handle it.

Where does TF3D get its mail account names from?

I just installed emoze, which I finally managed to get working well, but it automatically configured itself to call the mailbox "emoze", and I would like to change this. I searched all over the registry, but was unable to find this.
Does anyone know where WM6.1 or TF3D store this information, so I can go in there and change it (the way emoze installs itself on the device you cannot go in and edit this setting via the WM interface).
Thanks!
Hi Diplomate,
emoze uses a special API to set the account name, changing it will result in emoze not functioning at all.
Gilirock.
I finally gave up on emoze!
In the end, I had to give up on emoze, as it has a couple of very annoying bugs:
First, any calendar event which recurs yearly gets added multiple times back into the Outliik calendar (using the PC client), but I was not able to figure out the logic there: some where added 5 times, other 12, others 13. None were touched/edited/open on either the device or Outlook, as they were set months in the future... a reat PITA to clean-up!
Second, emoze seems to ignore the "File As" field when importing contacts into the diamond, so all your contacts revert back to the default "lastname, firstname" display order, regardless of how you have them set in Outlook. As this sort order cannot be changed in TF3D, you are SOL!
Basically, a great idae/product if you could configure it to only take care of e-mail, and let ActiveSync take care of your calendar/contacts, etc. But this is not possible - apparently emoze wants to only do it all, so...
Too bad! I loved the push e-mail!

help finding organizer software

ok so i am looking to have an organizer on my phone so i can write down all my homework and stuff. i love the tasks program that is standerd on the phone but now would like to have the same type of software but i want the software to email me the tasks i have written that day. i would like this to automatically happen everyday. is there any software out there that does this? if so please post a link. thanks again,
burro breath
wouldn't it be easier to just synch it with outlook 200X ?
that way you could enter it on your phone and it will automaticaly put those things in your agenda/taskmanager in outlook
Have you thought about services instead of software?
I know you asked for software, but I immediately tought of "Sandy" when you said you wanted automatic emails with your tasks for the day. Check out "iwantsandy.com" to see how it works. Another service is ReQall, which is voice activated lists. it will also email your outsatnding items to you at a set time each day. There is a WM app for ReQall, but it is a little flaky on my Tilt. I actually use both servies, as well as Jott.
I hope this helps

[Q] How do you sync hd7 to your outlook?

Hi all,
I just unplugged my sim from my X1 silver, and plugged it into my HD7. and then, after two hours...
1. how do you actually sync your phone contacts from ms outlook 2007 to it? I tried downloading zune, but nothing. The freakin' thing doesn't even have a manual.
2. I thought I won't encounter a problem since it's HTC and since it's WM7, and since my PC is win7 x64. But oh boy, this is getting in my nerves.
3. WM7 doesn't know how find a hidden (SSID) WIFI. I mean,.. Dang!
compared to any wm phones, just plug the hell into your pc, get wmdc, and then voila. 5 minutes tops.
XD
WP7 is indeed a different bird from WM. Hidden SSID is a known limitation, and hopefully gets addressed with the coming update.
I assume your outlook is not connected to exchange? If so, piece of cake, if not, you'll likely prefer (or not) to use a hotmail connector for outlook. This essentially creates a cloud-based sync.
Oh, and the manual is inside the box in a little pocket.
I managed to upload my msoutlook 2007 contacts to the cloud using OC32bit. almost a piece of cake. But, I'm having a hard time getting it to my phone.
When I try to add an account, it says windows live account is already added. but when I tap people. There nothing in the contacts list. None.
When I try to login to windows live via pc I can see all the contacts from there.
I... just hate it.
Talk about innovation, talk about the future. XD
Use Outlook connector and a hotmail account and everything works perfectly.
Hi,
Thanks! I manage to do it now. After spending a night my phone book has everything on it now(contacts wise). Too lazy to repeat it for calendar, lastly, I missed activesync so much that even your one note syncs to your wm.
I'm having thoughts on returning the phone and getting the android version (desire or X10) because of these:
1. hd7 only installs apps on what windows wants and not what YOU want.
2. it doesn't support pdf file for book reading, document reading.
3. I heard it doesn't open .doc .xls and any lower .doc files. (old docs still exist today unconverted)
4. I can't put files on the phone "ala USB flash disk style" I mean where's the plug drag and go, when you use the phone business wise. how do you intend to use the 16G space? (for movies or music; given the rumored battery life?)
Everything we do on our wm phones aren't easy to do on this wp7 anymore, I haven't reviewed at it before I grabbed my HD7 since I said to myself what do I have to worry about? I have grown from WM5, WM6 and WM6.1, what could go wrong?
I dunno I mean I hope I'm not babbling, I can't google if i don't open pocket ie and type google, I can't install opera, I can't browse flash sites I mean, youtube isn't the only streaming video out there. I can't install my garmin mobile xt, I can't install java app, I can't explore the contents of my phone. I mean this is freakin' alien windows i'm using. I don't even know if I can find my phone on over the local area (win7) network or homegroup.
With all the "I can'ts" I said. I thought I'd better off android!. XD
1. hd7 only installs apps on what windows wants and not what YOU want.
If you mean the app store is limited, yes it is. It's growing though.
2. it doesn't support pdf file for book reading, document reading.
Download the Adobe Reader from Marketplace. Free.
Haven't tried #3.
4. I can't put files on the phone "ala USB flash disk style" I mean where's the plug drag and go, when you use the phone business wise. how do you intend to use the 16G space? (for movies or music; given the rumored battery life?)
Zune. It's just a matter of figuring it out. It's different, to be sure. They also want you to utilize cloud based storage more. The offer free SkyDrive space included with your live account, and most of the MS apps can access that space. Other apps, like the eBook reader Freda, can connect to a DropBox account. Then there is Sharepoint.
I can't google if i don't open pocket ie and type google
Open up IE then press the capacitive Search button. Instantly takes you to Google.
I just found there's a google app in the markeplace too? and yes it grows every hour, its almost endless... pretty neat!
If you say it's just a matter of figuring it out, I hope I can figure it out with an option NOT to upload it on a cloud, since c'mon not all places in the world have super fast internet connection, I don't want uploading an entire folder up there then downloading it to my device.
And even if the chevron thing would work on my device, It would void my warranty so I wouldn't try.
After 2 days with my new phone, I feel much more comfortable with it now. I hope it would get even better.
Gotta follow this up since I don't want to start another similar thread.
I have another question:
The phone contacts (people) always have you on top named "Me"
question is, How do you actually link a contact to "Me"?
I just noticed it now that somebody asks for my bank account and of course, I'll look for it in my notes within my ms outlook contact under my name. I just found out that my name in my hd7 doesn't have a picture and doesn't have a facebook link(not that the FB link is too important), etc. and when I click the link icon in the bottom middle, I can link it to any other contact entry in my phone except "Me".
Technically speaking, the contact named after me in my phone is treated as another person. I tried signing on to windows live, check my contact there, found my name and the options I have is "add as a friend" which is really beginning to sound funny.
Long story short, I need to link my ms outlook 2007 contact(myname) to the owner of the HD7 phone which is me, so I wouldn't retype everything and delete the synced "myname" account since if i do so that would be deleted in my PC. I gotta have 'em both. but I wish I just could link it to my phone's "Me" account.
That's a toughie.
So the "Me" contact syncs up with both your Windows Live account and your Facebook account (which you add in services --> email and accounts, NOT the blue facebook app)
I don't see a way to sync the Me contact with another outlook contact.
You may want to take the notes in your Outlook contact and copy them to your Live stuff.

that's dependant on carrier... I get yahoo, you could get the google search app from the market or pin google from IE to the start so you can launch straight to google.

Yeah, not the blue facebook app. and I think I'll just have to deal with it having two seperate accounts the Me, and my outlook unlinked.
@frontieruk
Speaking about the search button, it is getting annoying when you actually hit the button accidentally. I hope someday a double-press (double-click) fix would make it possible.
I had a similar experience except that I got the "Me" where it's suppose to be the first time. Learning little by little, I guess Hotmail (windows live) is actually kinda cool.
