AT&T 3G Coverage - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

This took me a while to find on their website so I thought I would share it with people who are interested to save them the time of searching.

Yeah, that's a useful link to have...although not 100% accurate. My home is clearly outside the area marked for 3G but I definitely get it anyway!

ATT HSDPA in my town!!!

So I was just out getting my midnight release copy of GTAIV on Xbox 360. I was in the middle of sending a few pictures of the event to a couple friends when all the sudden, at about 12:15am on 4/29/08, my Tilt switched from E to H!!! I couldn't believe my eyes! I thought my phone was lying to me so I ran a couple speed tests using Opera and sure enough the first test hit over 600kbps!! Usually I see around 200ish.
Just to be safe, I just got home and the first thing I did was tethered. I ran a speedtest from speedtest.net and saw 1.1mbps which is usually at around 300kbps.
Now here is the good part of the story. I have been hounding my ATT reps every chance I get asking when oh when 3G was coming to my hometown and they have been telling me July/August at BEST. So I'm thinking I may have stumbled upon ATT testing it out tonight. Still very cool. I guess tomorrow morning will tell whether or not it stays or if this was a test!!
What a great night, GTAIV and HSDPA... what more does a guy need?
Oh, I live in St. Cloud, MN.
UPDATE: 9:30AM and it's still on!

What more? Just this... here. (Link May Be NSFW depending on how Communist your Work is.)
BTW Congrats on your HSDPA. I've been loving it for a few months now.
I live in the Bay Area and I also experience HSDPA at times, mainly shortly when I'm on the freeway.
well, Italy, in this kind of stuff (pretty useless) is almost leader in the world.
we are completly covered by HDSPA, from at least 2-3 years.
but we have prohibitive tariffs (like $2.34 every 15mins or $47 for 100hours)
HSDPA has been on Minneapolis, MN from 10/2007.
its great isn't it? one day I looked down at my phone and say "3G" instead of E. I live outside of bakersfield ca. was a nice day for me.
1. no offense
2. I HATE YOU!!!!!!
3. I REALLY HATE YOU!!!!!!
4. Now let me apologize.. I'm sorry that I HATE YOU!!!!

Ahh this is fantastic. I've been waiting for this day for years. I've come to realize it's basically like the transition from dial-up to cable internet. Man, I went nuts that day!
Now I can finally stream all my music to my phone without it having to buffer every 5 seconds! Horray!
AT&T has definitely been upgrading HSDPA in the US. Many think it is being expedited for the release of the 3G iphone. AT&T did the same thing to their Edge network right before the current iphone came out.
I am in NJ also, and I've had a 3G indicator all along, and an H indicator when downloading data.
In the beginning of April that changed to a constant H indicator.
From inside my office, 4bars H, 1mb test file from DLS Reports 665kbit/sec ... although I've seen better speeds over 999kbit/sec from other locations.

wow thats odd..when i first purchased my unit which was in March, i found k.tweaks and did that change first and every since its been on H.. i rarely get 3G anymore in fact.. if i do run low on service by my job, or low zones, it either goes to E or G.. i havent seen the 3G icon in about a month now
oh and when i ran my DLS report i got the same stats u had..
I've had my TILT since Nov 2007, and I also had enabled the HSDPA via tweaks.
I would always see 3G, unless I started a download ... say a podcast via Newsbreak ... then the icon would change to H.
The constant H is definitely a network change/upgrade.
Many of us thought it was a problem ... kind of comical now looking back:

3G/HSDPA has been in the bay area for quite some time. I'm surprised you don't get it.
By the way I noticed differences in speeds in different cities. For example in San Francisco I get a 3G icon and it will switch to H when doing data. DSL speed tests are usually around 500. In New York City I never see a 3G icon, H the entire time. Speed tests are closer to 900-1000.
Half right Jstar ...
732 part is right.
Proto part is wrong.
As a note, mine is a constant H. I have not seen a 3G icon yet.
If you guys want to see some more data speed tests, please check out my other thread I created with a bunch of results.

What I meant was I usually get 3G but I'll switch to H at random times when I'm on the freeway.

E vs. 3G vs. H

I'm getting confused about the speeds. I have an at&t Tilt. When I had the stock ROM it would only show E and 3G. When I tether with E I can barely do anything. When I connect with 3G I get download speed of 1200kb/s from speedtest.net. Now after upgrading to Dutty's WM6.1 I saw an option for HSDPA. This is where I got confused. I now have 3 connections. E just sucks. 3G now sucks. I get 100kb/s speeds. With H I get 1000kb/s speeds. Now how come H is now like the old 3G?
I know on my Tilt the H icon was just that an icon because the tilt didnt have the symbol enabled and that while i was surfing the net on 3G that i was still getting HSDPA speeds. Hopefully that helps...
Can someone explain why my phone will sometimes jump to the 3g symbol while I'm on the t-mobile network? I'm in the boston area. I thought they bought the 1700mhz band?
t-mobile..

Boston, NYC, Chicago, Tampa,Miami, LA,San-fran..

G is the best, For real Gangsters.

Ok, so it's just an icon thing. with the new ROM H is like the old 3G. 3G is like the old E. funny that it's goes to E once in a great while. i wonder what that is?

This isn't really news to most people here and it also doesn't directly have anything to do with development, at least not in the way of helping anyone get a ROM out.
Looks like the droid to me. Also I'm not sure if this is actually built by google or just something from motorola/verizon.
Yeah that looks like the new verizon version of Android that will suck because its on verizon. it will be locked down where Rooting wont be a possibility. Nice pics though.
**** looks sick, but itll be much sicker when cyan gets his hands on it
Wow, you are all quite against Verizon, huh? I've been with T-Mobile now about 15 years, but they still do not have very good service when I am here in my house. I have to fight to get more than 1 bar, and when I do I need to stand in one spot and not move or my call drops, 3G is a joke here too. In using a Verizon phone the past few days it has 2-3 bars here in my house, and no issues with data. I have considered moving over since they are offering up that Android phone in the next few days, but if you are saying that it will be limited badly I will not go.

Hey Tom I am in AZ also and I was with the big V for a very long time. They have wonderful service probably the best, now with that said...I did leave once T-mobile brought the G1 to this world. I got fed up with Verizon's crappy cell phones that they put out along with the crappy software every single one of there phones run. They block everything so you are not able to do anything cool and awesome to the phone. If I know Verizon they are not going to want you or let you do anything to there android phone that might give you something for free. So rooting a phone lets you do so much to a phone like teather, which verizon will block in a heart beat cause they want to charge you an additional $15 to let you do that. Verizon also only lets you use 5gigs of data before they start charging you extra (overage fees). Verizon also has there own apps store which they will make you use. Read this:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/13/verizon-to-its-smartphones-thou-shalt-have-no-other-app-store-b/
I have switched to Tmobile and I dont regret it I never look back. I love my G1, I love the things I am able to do with it. I dont know where you live but I am not in the Phx area, I am in a 2G area and I always have 3 or 4 bars. And data out here even for 2G its not that bad.
Last Verizon is like Microsoft they hate anything Open Source they will do anything to Kill Open Source. They want there dirty little hands on everything you do on there network/product.
Hope this helped.

Outside of major metro areas Tmob can be lacking in towers, i live about 30mins outside of philadelphia and tmob is great, but 20 mins down the road its gprs only, some areas are edge, so they have upgrades yet to do.
Verizions tech. Was upgradeable to 3g where gsm needed more expensive equip. To go 3g, but the switch to 3.5/4g will be easier for gsm than the wcdma towers.
In more rural areas around here verizion has very good service.
Philly metro was one of the first few tmob areas to go 3g, but at my house I still suffer with 9600baud gprs, its just a tad faster than my old 2400baud amiga modem strapped to my brown C=64(i think i just gave away my age)

Worth noting this one, not really out for the dream yet, more of something to look forward to.

Cute, but unfortunately, it required a data plan -- at least for rerouting (if you stay on route, it uses cache), which is the most important use-case for GPS nav.

If you don't have a dataplan (or some other way to give your phone internet connectivity) there's no way Google Navigation will be able to perform voice search, street view, real-time traffic, or anything else that differentiates this from a standard nav device or nav software.

While I agree that its pretty pointless to have a G1 without a dataplan, I will say that TMO's network is not equal in all areas. I can barely get edge where I am so while this will be great for those fortunate enough to stay in 3g, people without 3g or travel frequently to non 3g areas may need an offline solution.
So whats a guy gotta do to get this navigation on his g1? i have no patience!! we need this app!!

Ditto here....use and was happy with CoPilot, however, have said on here and other forums that Google simply needed to man-up and take that last step to provide realtime navigation and they'd put everyone else out of the market.
Looks like that just happened.
However, I will be keeping CoPilot as I do often travel into areas with *zero* coverage. Driving between north Edwards AFB, CA and Las Vegas at night is a bit hair raising. No signals out there, much less even EDGE.

It's kinda pointless having a navigation that requires data connection, I mean - it's GPS - you might want to go offroad and loose 2G/3g or whatever GSM signal. You'd also consider to go abroad not paying attention you are roaming (you know, being an average user) and when you come back - SNAP - a 10000$ bill... Oh, and I don't have a data plan, I'm crying in the corner.

TeleNav does just fine on GPRS. With the map caching, I don't see where TMO's network would make navigation in Google Maps an issue. As long as you're not using satellite view, or zoomed waayy out, I doubt it'll be much different (bandwidth-wise) from TeleNav.

Hehe, well, to be fair, turn-by-turn navigation as a whole is pretty useless for any area without roads or places to go. We still have our compasses, though...
I'm surprised people aren't making a bigger deal out of this. I'm extremely excited. Not only is this a free, seemingly top-quality GPS app, but it's tied into the phone quite nicely, and it's way more innovative than anything Garmin or TomTom have put out, ever.

How is the signal strength where you live? I have had my Nexus since the day it launched, and dont experience any of those issues. But then again....I have great 3G/HSPA connectivity here in Denver.
I live near Detroit MI and the 3g is ok. I do get edge 40% of the time when I am in my house but wifi fixes that.
I have had mine 48 hours. It has worked properly about 2 hours. The rest has been filled with lost data connections, signal going from 4 bars to zero bars, and back to 4 bars within seconds, and many many missed calls/messages/aborted calls. NOT HAPPY AT ALL. I thought this was going to be an upgrade from my G1- the speed is great but it is totally unusable as an actual phone. BTW, 3g in my area is excellent (on the G1).
I'm in Tulsa, OK and have yet to see EDGE on my 3G ATT Nexus. I've had it all day and been all over town and now home and I've got 3G all day and 4 bars 3G at home in the house.
I had my Nexus since the day it was launched, and dont have any 3G issues. I have great 3G/HSPA connectivity here in Las Vegas.

BTW, 3g in my area is excellent (on the G1).

same here basically. I'm 1 mile from an HSDPA enabled tower and can't get anything faster than EDGE on a consistent basis. Dropped and garbled calls galore.

I had my Nexus since the day it was launched, and dont have any 3G issues. I have great 3G/HSPA connectivity here in Las Vegas.

Las Vegas is one of T-mobile's best connected cities... so no surprise there. But even in Toledo, OH, I get 3G outdoors without issue and switch between 3G and Edge only indoors, where I have wifi anyway.
Maybe you guys that are having problems might call HTC for swaps.
All of this worries me. I don't want to shell out $530 for a phone that could have issues with keeping a 3G connection. Even on cyanogens wiki he sates "Is the 3G issue fixed? No. While Google did issue an Over-The-Air update On 2010-Feb-02, it doesn't fully fix the switch from 3G to EDGE, which might be a mix of a hardware problem and a software one." I am hoping the desire comes out soon to see if that has the same problems. It is almost the same hardware so I would think it would be the same but we will see.
If anything it's the baseband programming from Qualcomm... I'm NOT seeing as bad as an issue as before. I do on occasion see it go to EDGE; I've just not got in the habit of leaving my phone on 3G only now.
no trouble in austin tx 3g and H all the time
Called HTC and they had no other solution but for me to loose $45 (because it was etched) plus shipping to get me another phone that would likely do the same thing. So, I rooted and crossed my fingers that having a choice in radios would help. Nope. Oh well, it looks cool. I use it to show off, and make calls with my G1
It's always good to try another SIM card(S) from a different carrier before coming to conclusions.

That's really not possible in the US. We have 2 GSM provides and both use different frequencies. You're definitely not going to get 3G with the other provider's SIM.

Its true I get good 3g when I go to vegas, but the weird thing is,i get absolutely zero gps functionality there. Any app that requires gps like sherpa or maps is useless. Go figure.

that's simple. They don't want you to leave!
Ughhh, I'm line of sight to a tower and get -70 to -75dBm all the time but I swear I jump for joy if I manage to get 600kps on this N1.
I went to the outdoor mall in my neighborhood that has the T-Mobile antenna there. I was getting about -75dbm and when I covered the back of the phone with my palm as demonstrated in the videos showcasing the 3g problem my reception would drop to about -105dbm... is it me or is that excessive considering how close I was?
