Out Of Main Mempory? HOW? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I've been getting OUT OF MEMORY errors since yesterday. Using Pocket Mechanic, I have found the largest files. The file name that is big is called mxip_initdb and from what I understand, it holds contacts, calendar, etc.
THIS STINKING FILE IS 16 MB!
I have 62 contacts on my phone, very light use of the calendar.
The really bad thing is that this file is found 2 times.
/windows/mxip_initdb
/mxip_initdb
How can I fix this? It is eating up about 30 MB of space.

That file is only 28KB on my Tilt. Have you done a soft reset?

I have done a soft reset... file rollback, uninstalled almost ALL 3rd party apps. Restarted about 100 times and they are both still there and living large.

Ended up hard resetting to get it fixed.

Memory Usage on Tilt

I just bought my Tilt two days ago, I did the trick to remove the bloatware and didn't re-install any of the items it removed. My memory usage is usually between 66-70%, i only have a few extra programs, and don't have any thing running under the running programs tab in the memory section, the programs that i have are, kaiser tilt, tcpmp, google maps, htc home customizer, and that's about it, i only have solatire and bubble breaker under games, no xpress mail, i use the outlook for my gmail, but the memory usage of 66-70% seems a little high, is there a way to get the usage down some? or is that normal?
Try this
In Internet Explorer choose Menu>Tools>Options>Memory
Then Clear History and Delete Files
Another approach (not exactly sure if this is equivalent to one of the above) is to delete all items in the folder \Windows\Profiles\Guest\Temporary Internet Files.
IE "crap" can really suck up a lot of space quickly.
I don't think he's talking about storage memory, but RAM memory, which deleting the PIE cache will not affect.
My Tilt with Dutty's ROM runs at about 40% with no programs open. I thought that was excessive before reading your post.
It doesn't matter how many programs you have installed. It's what's running that matters. I have tons of things installed, but I usually keep everything shut down (except for whatever's using 40% of that 128mb of RAM!)
yea, i'm talking about Ram memory, currently right now w/nothing running, except for what ever goes on behind the sences that i dont' know about, but under the running programs tabs i have no programs on i'm at 70%, memory says 125.04 total, 89.45 in use, 35.59 free. any ways to reduce that amount being used?
That does seem very excessive. On my today screen i have HTC home and SPB plus with a bunch of icons and other stuff and i am using up 33-40% depending on how long i have the phone running for. Have you tried soft resetting it to see if the memory goes down at all right when you start it up? It might be something that you have loaded in your today screen thats hogging memory or causing a leak.

I tried the soft reset, it started up at 73% used memory and went down to 71% used memorty after a minute or two. I have no idea what's causing so much use, like it mentioned in the first post i don't have much installed and nothing running when i did the reset.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? i'm thinking i may have to just do a hard reset and see were the memory usage is and then re install everything, if that dont work it looks like a phone call to tech support unless someone has any ideas
Maybe a bloated mxip_initdb?

I would try loading Memmaid to see what services are really running on youe phone. I hover around 40% in use most of the time. I use Memmaid to condence my memory and clean out dup and dangling notifications. I t really helps me

the 125.04 total you quote is for storage memory, not program memory. (mine shows 101.28 total available program memory) it has nothing to do with running programs, but rather the amount of programs you have installed to main memory.
if you haven't already done so, get a storage card and install your programs there if given the option.

What is this file, and can something be done to reduce etc? Mine is currently sitting on around 16mb!!!
Try SKTools here: http://s-k-tools.com/index.html?sktools/m_feat.html. It has many features and a good "FreeUP RAM Service" described here http://s-k-tools.com/?m_freeuprams.html. Trial available.

How to diagnose sluggish response?

My Tytn II has developed an annoying slowdown over the last few days and it's getting on my wick. I have no applications running, 54Mb of storage memory and 52Mb of program memory and yet every key press takes at least 10 seconds to respond, screen redraws are a nightmare and answering the phone is impossible because it refuses to accept button presses in time.
Clearly something is hogging the processor, but how can I find out what it is? Is there a WM equivalent of the windows Task manager that shows CPU and memory usage on the device in realtime?
I'm loathe to do a hard reset because I really don't want the hassle of reinstalling everything again.
Thanks for any assistance.
Lee.
Try this freeware app, Task Manager. It will show all processess and apps like Windows.
Can't upload as I only use RAR and it's not supported now all of a sudden.
dot fred task manager is what you want to google for.
AFAIK, .RAR attachments never worked, must be thinking of another forum...
not sure if it's related but when mine slows down l just clear the temp internet files.

That was the first thing I did and it made no difference. As I said I have plenty of storage and app memory left
Also tried Task Manager, which showed no rogue processes and the system idle process was active at about 80-90%, so that showed nothing either.
I've been deleting stuff all weekend to see if there was a dodgy app but nothing has made any difference so far. I'm going to bite the bullet and do a hard reset combined with a 6.1 firmware upgrade to make some use of it.

U may try something like SKTools or memmaid, they have some clean-up functions. The sktools have a function to free up your RAM. Its worth checking.

Deleted pics remain cache!

Woops! I thought I had deleted some incriminating pictures from the gallery and with astro file manager BUT while looking through the SD card , I found old deleted pics!
How can I really delete pictures without them showing up in some cache directory?
I heard that in-order to do so you needed to email them to someone totally random. I can give you a totally random email address for this purpose if you like ;-)
I think there are Cache clearing apps on the market, last i remember anyways.
LOL...
Thats no good. It should delete without any apps...damn.
all it does is super compress them so they can be overwritten...
As you'll no doubt aware, most disks/SSDs, memory sticks, microSDs still contain most old "deleted" files, even if they aren't obvious, until where the data was has been overwritten by something else..
Couple of useful bits of code, TestDisk & PhotoRec can help recover lost stuff (or stuff someone thought they'd deleted (!!!!) )..
get them here..
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
NB Both these bits of software can completely screw machines/PCs/Laptops. whatever so BE CAREFULL!!!!!
I'm just about to try PhotoRec on the N1 and see what she finds... & will report...
My mate dodgy Rob found fascinating deleted SMS messages on his wife's (non-Android) 'phone.... the story of what he did about it is even funnier...
Cheers!
Lodger
Yup, Photorec can recover deleted stuff - .jpegs, .mov, .mpegs.. at least it did from my N1... - you have been warned ...
Running Ubuntu (Linux) & looking at the microSD card it reports 907 items on the microSD
Photorec recovered 3,724 items (!).. on the microSD and kindly copied them all to my Laptop..
If you really really need to feel confident something has gone then (I'm not an expert mind...) i understand you need to either..
a) (quick 'n dirty method ..) Fill up the apparently " empty" bit of the SD with garbage - eg some other .jpegs... or
b) To be really certain, re-format her: Several times... probably with several different file systems (FAT32, NTFS, EXT3...) , and don't chose the "quick" options...
Cheers!

mine disappear after a soft reset

I developed CacheMate for clearing cache. It would not work for this purpose. There are a few places where the images would be stored. When in the DCIM directory in /sdcard using Astro, make sure you are viewing hidden file and directories. You can do this by check the "Show Hidden Files" checkbox in Menu > Preferences > Look and Feel. You need to delete the pics from the .thumbnails directory too. If you really want, you can always cue them up in the gallery and delete them that way (long pressing on the pictures brings up the multiple select checkbox). Hope this helps a little.
Thanks for the help.
Re: get pics back from sd card
Actually, the easy way to recover deleted photos from sd card or hard disk is to use a photo software. You can google it and you will get many photo recovery softwares. But they are mostly not free. I have come across the same thing like you. Finally, I get my pics back with Yesterdata.
Kind Tips:
Don't save the recovered data on your memory card again. Find another place for it like on your computer or other external disk, for safety's sake.

[Q] 2095 files in /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/files

Hi XDA people. In folder /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/files right now I have 2095 files named thumbnail_photo_(\d+).jpg. Those are thumbnails for contacts pictures. I have may be 20+ contacts with pictures attached (of ~300 overall), All these files are duplicates. Dated since I first turned phone ON I think. And duplicated ~once a day for every thumbnail. What's going on? It can theretically eat all my data's partition space
I have installed Skype, version 1.0.0.983 and twitter account. Some contacts are linked skype/twitter/phone/google. Pictures at most from skype, 1 from twitter.
I have HTC Incredible S, started with stock ROM (i think this duplication started in stock ROM), now I have Android Revolution 1.1.1.
Any help appreciated.

maybe your phone thinks their cute? lol but that is weird if you really want to get rid of them then do a full wipe of everything (expect battery stats) and install a fresh rom
but they wont slow down your phone as it uses flash storage, and can you tell how much space their taking up?>
also what rom are you using ?

Be serious, jul644. They took 18 Mb. 95% of them are orphans I guess, they are not linked to contacts2.db. So who will clean this up if not manually delete them?
This strange effect started in stock HTC ROM, now I have Android Revolutin, which is almost same, at least in HTC Sense part.

Yes, I do contacts sync with google, but there are no duplicates of contacts not in phone nor in "google contacts" via web. All my backups I do by nandroid in cwm, bever backedup/restored via Titanium nor phone did not full contacts fetch from online store.
So I found something interesting today.
I removed photos from contacts, disabled contact aggregation on twitter and skype etc., cleaned that folder.
Configured contacts sync and aggregation with skype and twitter again.
Checked folder - only one copy for every picture.
That was three days ago. What I have now: contacts with twitter and flickr pictures are still in one copy, but pictures got from skype are now in 3 copies each. Their modification times are with the difference in 24 hours.
Need to check if they all are listed in contacts2.db. Will post result soon.

Every fb contact iv (scrolled past)

[Q] Low on space

Hello,
Since a few days, my phone always give me this error : "Low on space: Phone storage space is getting low".
At the beginning, I deleted one or two apps. But the problem come back every day. At this point, I deleted all the apps I downloaded before. I have cleared the cache, cleared data of most of apps, deleted some SMS, some emails. Still have this problem. I cannot even install "Titanium Backup" to save some datas before to format the phone. I cannot do anything except answer the phone...
Does anybody know what can I do to fix this ?
Thanks in advance.
Someone else had this issue and IIRC it was contact photo's taking up a large amount of space or something?
Do you have rather a lot of contacts perhaps (i.e. several hundred)?
I have maybe ten photos. Less than one hundred contacts. And I haven't added many things recently. The only thing I have a lot is emails, on my GMail app and my Mail app, but after I have deleted many, nothing changed.
The weird thing is that the error message always come back a few hours after I clear some space. I don't get more emails or SMS during that time, it's like a ghost app is eating my space disk all the time. (This morning, after I have deleted all my emails, 5.34mb available. 10am : 5mb. 11am . 4.95mb. No SMS, no calls, nothing during that time.)
What does it say if you go to Settings -> Aplication -> Manage Applications.
Look at the bottom it says how much is used and how much is free.
You could move stuff to your SD Card to free some space on the Phone.
I have checked "Settings -> Application -> Manage Applications" but the total used and the total free is not displayed at the bottom.
I wish I could move something to the SD card, but except 50 photos, my SMS and Angry Birds, I have already deleted everything. Anyway, I appreciate the help.
I would do a Factory Reset and see if that solves the problem.
Finally it's what I did. After that, I installed the "Android Revolution HD" rom, and now, everything is working fine.
