I just spoke to a very very knowledgable representative from TMobile USA maybe 10 minutes ago.
I first started asking about the TMobile MDA Vario III (or to most known, the Kaiser... i believe at least). After talking a little we got into quite a deep conversation, the first person from first tier support that wasnt an idiot WOW!
He informed me that he had heard that TMobile USA had purchaced the 1700mhz band for their new 3g network. That we would definately here more about the network this year but that they are waiting (to many stupid US laws...) for all current users to vacate this newly purchaces band.
Also he then informed me that anyone that would be either buying a Kaiser from Europe unlocked, or buying an AT&T 8925 (Kaiser) then getting it unlocked would have the likelihood of not having the full potential of their 3g netword on their phone. Also stated that when 1700 does become purchased and person currently owning the tmobile mda or the new tmobile wing would not be able to use the 3g networks.
Next he told me about how an htc rep had come into the office not to long ago and talked to him about their (htcs) phones. The htc rep informed him that they are currently working on a very very quick phone for TMobile USA, im guessing it is some sort of branch off from the Kaiser, but he had no information exactly about that.
I also asked him about the pricing of the monthly data connection. He said, "well all i know from experience is that when TMobile went from normal data speeds to the EDGE towers, the monthly price stayed the same."
Trying to think about what else.... hmmm. I'm guessing that is it, ask question if you can think about anything else... we talked on the phone for seriously 20-25 minutes... how blackberrys suck, how iphones are overated and only for fad following cheerleaders lol, just everything.
TMO is in big mess because governmental agencies are refusing to vacate the 1700MHz as quick as TMO wants ( Homeland security ). their 3G network will be delayed and their GSM net will suffer because they lack the spectrum. Their 3G testing in NJ/NY was halted because of inteference!!

MDA and WING are not 3G phones. 1700 was won in a bidding about year and half ago.

correct it was won a year and a half ago. but there is some governmental law that says each user has 10 years to vacate that band 1700. its just a matter of time before tmobile starts paying people to get off their newly purchased network.
also about the comment of the mda and the wing... yes I know that they are not 3g compatable but I think there are quite a few 8525 unlocked tmobile users on this site like me. and I think there are quite a few that have tmobile that will be buying a phone (kaiser) soon that will cost a couple hundred dollars. I'm just here to warn them... this new phone may not even be able to work on the soon to be 3g network. just don't want people to waste their money.

I can kinda attest to that myself...
A few years ago I purchased the wonderful Moto V525 unlocked and Voda branded. Popped in my Tmobile SIM and worked like a charm, with the exception of downloads. While on a tmobile branded V300 the same download would take say 30 seconds, in mine, by then unbranded and flashed a million times, would take maybe 20-30 seconds longer.
Granted, this is no indication of anything... I have a Tmobile branded Wizard that has been flashed to death with all kinds of home cooked releases and the EDGE speeds I get are just fine.

Yeah. Sorry about my tantrum.
I have to deal with the actions of the FCC all of the time. I work in the cableTV industry. Kevin Martin HATES us!
The FCC whines about monopolies, level playing field, innovation and all of the other FUN buzz words and then they pull a major (*@#&(*&#@(*&$ like this!
Really gripes my cookies!
And to all of the folks out there that want to give th government more control over their lives so that they don't have to deal with the challenges, let this kind of mis-management of resources be a lesson.
Ok, off the soapbox and back to the technology!

this may not be right, but here on xda-developers, if you go to the htc titan section, they also refer it to the mogul, 6800, and vario III?
so the Vario III might not be the kaiser.

Mog,
Since you mentioned Tmobile and unlock 8525, I was wondering what WM6 ROMs (Cooked or HTC Released) is the most stable, compatible with this network. I too have an AT&T 8525, SuperCID / SIM unlock that I use for Tmobile (USA) network. But all the stuff that I have read in most threads are optimize for AT&T.
Some folks in the UK who are using Tmobile suggested to go with WM6 cooked ROMs. But I know their network and ours are quite different. At first I thought if I purchased a Tmobile UK phone (838 PRO) and have it unlock, then it will be optimized for Tmobile USA network. But I found out that they're entirely different from one another.
I just wanted to know your feedback as well as other Tmobile users out there who uses 8525 or similar phone, which WM6 ROM would be best for our situation. Any input or feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks all

Well go to the Hermes WM6 board, there was one just released on the 17th or 18th i believe. V3gp or something like that, I believe that would be the most stable because it is the closest thing we got to the WM6 8525 official ROM update. I myself am dealing with WM5 currently, I'll just wait for the official release which "should" be fairly soon.

I dont believe so, for hotspot at home to work you not only need the wifi capability you need some other program to be able to switch from wifi to normal satellite, but im not saying someone will re-release it themselves. We got alot of smart programmers on this website

1900mhz 3G-HSDPA

Not positive why the T-mob rep told ya 1700mhz cause they purchaes they also purchased 2100MHZ frequency.

Once again, incorrect information.
It doesn't matter the band, ANYTHING can be put on any band.
T-Mobile bought the 1700MHz band to put their 3G on.
They can offer 2-way video just like every other 3G carrier, or they could do like AT&T and offer 1-way or they could not offer video at all if they wanted.
Its up to them
This thread was started with incorrect information and continues to get posts as such. Since this is just confusing more people than helping, I'm closing the thread.
and wondering if i should go the pre-unlocked route.
my t-mobile mda is aging. gracefully yes, but still. one of the main reasons i got it was for the mobile pc idea and it has worked wonderfully but i must admit the built-in gps in the kaiser is a selling point. so...
i am going to keep my t-mobile account/etc and was wondering if i bought an unlocked phone and popped in my sim card would i be good to go as far as the radio bands? t-mobile has yet to roll out its 3G network at any significant rate here in florida and i heard rumors that their 3G freq was not the global standard (fcc issues or somesuch).
the kaiser i read does 3G and 3.5G as well as the GSM bands and tmobile has GSM now, so i am wondering if i am shooting myself in the wallet for a phone that might not work on the right freq once the t-mobile 3G comes online.
any thoughts or places i can check on this? i have done the google dance and i come upon rumor after rumor (most 1+ years old). so any hard info would be appreciated.

i did and did not find the info i am looking for. lots of stuff for tmobile in the uk. lots of att stuff for the us. not a whole lot of reliable info for the tmobile in the us with unlocked kaiser (unbranded). i did call tmobile to find out about what 3G freq they are using in my area and the response was "we dont give out that information as of yet." very helpful indeed. but he did say that they have a 3G phone out now/soon (he couldnt say...again) that is a slider phone but no windows mobile. i think its a motorola something or other. not my bag.
so i guess i will sit on my mda.

Call T-mob tech support.
I just noticed that in the phone>settings>band that UMTS 1700 is not an option....
The phone's wiki says it supports it, is this a 'feature' in the Rom?
Kaiser doesn't support the US T-Mobile 3g band.
From the wiki
UMTS 1700 (Emobile-only)
What does Emobile-only mean?
T-Mobile US 3G uses AWS 1700, so you're out of luck on trying to get a kaiser to work on the newly launched T-Mobile 3G. As of this date, there are no smartphones released that will work on the T-Mobile US 3G.
Emobile is (I believe) a Japanese carrier.
ok first i think AT&T users have an issue with T-Mobile users cuz T-Mobile provides 3G on the 2100 band.
Second there was a claim in this forum somewhere that he was getting 3G signal on T-Mobile in Boston.
T-Mobile users if you get 3G connection please talk. AT&T users without T-Mobile service shush.

This attitude will get you nowhere other than ignored. Don't make the assumption that just because someone uses AT&T, they are automatically wrong when it comes to other networks.
Anyone with real intelligence would just go to a T-Mobile store in NYC, find a phone that supports 3G, and look at the Band settings page to see which frequency it is running on.
As for the 3G guy in Boston, it is quite possible that a hiccup in the network caused him to jump on to an AT&T tower momentarily.
I think the At&t, lack of 3G issue is related to iPhones, regardless it is silly.
If anything people should argue the cost and terms of their contracts (in the US anyway.)

well i apologize if my comment offended you but you shouldn't assume that i assume that someone using AT&T service is automatically wrong.
If you're trying to say I have no real intelligence, every T-Mobile store I've seen in Queens and Manhattan has dummy phones on display. There is no way to check the settings myself. I can ask the salesman or call CS.
Anyways 3G on T-Mobile isn't just on 1700Mhz. Its also on 2100Mhz
you may be right that the dude in boston jump on to an AT&T tower for a while. but you can be wrong cuz you don't know the details to T-Mobile 3G service. or maybe he didn't have a tilt and had the kaiser/tynt II from europe.

Right because the tytn II is a completely different device than the tilt...
You need to research how the signals operate and why it utilizes two frequencies and maybe, just maybe, you'll stop making an ass of yourself.

So T-Mobile is such a ghetto-fabulous company that they don't even give you live demos to play with? I mean even Sprint, who Deutsche Telekom is considering buying, gives you live phones to play with.
I'm not sure why my post was deleted, but I'm the guy from boston that posted about my phone jumping to 3g. The reason I posted was because this past friday night(May 2nd 2008), at around 11:30pm, the icon on my phone jumped to 3g. Normally, this only happens for a second, then the carrier info will say AT&T 3G, then I get no service. However, this time, the icon said 3G, and my carrier info still said T-mobile. It stayed that way for about 45 minutes or so.
I'm using an unlocked at&t tilt and a WM6.1 Rom from xda (I don't remember which one, but it's very light - as in, light on crap and unused features)

I'm starting to see Diamonds for sale on Ebay. If I were to purchase one now, would it work on Sprint, even though they have not officially released it yet? Also, any reason to wait for the rumored Raphael; is it better?
Anybody switch to Diamond from Mogul; is it much better?
Thanks for your thoughts.
The diamonds you see is most likely unlocked, and can be used in any network you like.. I have no clue where in this world you reside, but US beware! No quad-band.
I'm in USA, so are you saying do not buy? Thanks for your response.

Yes dont buy unless its an American version of the Diamond...the ones on ebay are all asian versions which means that it wont work on the 3G network in America as far as i know. Judging by past posts on here by American forum members...best you will get is either Edge or GPRS if your lucky.
The American version of the Diamond should be released in july/august...best off waiting till then i would say.
Whoa! There is a lot of untrue information floating around here. First of all, Sprint runs on a completely different network than the rest of the world. So while the phones you purchase on eBay are most likely unlocked, they still run on GSM bands, which means you will only be able to use it with either AT&T or T-Mobile in the states. (Sprint/Verizon run on CDMA bands.)
Additionally, as noted - these non-US versions of the Diamond are not quad-band, and they do not run on the 3G bands used here in the states. I have one and live in the Washington DC area. I get fairly consistent Edge speeds, and slightly more dropped calls than with a US-release phone. It's well worth it to have the most kick-ass phone currently available, but it is a sacrifice nonetheless. Of course, depending on your geographic region, you may have more or less luck.
Finally, on a personal opinion note... Get off Sprint. Phones like this are always released first for the rest of the world, and have to be made with radios specific to Sprint/Verizon for use on their networks, which is always going to trail widespread release by several months at least (if not a year or longer). By using AT&T or T-Mobile, you are going to have access to much greater equipment selections on a regular basis.
I, have the Diamond in New York on T-Mobile Network, and my Edge connection is pretty quick with Opera, and as far as calls after two weeks of use I have yet to experience a dropped call or bad reception. I know this is not the same case in every area, but the fact that this device will not work in the US is not entirely true except 3G.
*Note* Neither Sprint nor Verizon will work.
The current versions of Diamond is not CDMA version. So they will not work on any CDMA networks in the US. That includes but not limited to Sprint, Verizon, and US Cellular. They will however work in the US with T-Mobile and AT&T with Edge connection. According to the FCC filing, they will do the full announcement of Diamond in the US by August 13 and PCS 1900Mhz was mentioned in the pdfs. All photos and such can not be disclosed by FCC until Aug 13th.
Hi guys and gals, we just got our hands on the unlocked GSM version of the Touch Diamond for the US, with US (err, AT&T) 3G. Here's my first look: http://www.mobiletechreview.com/phones/US-3G-HTC-Touch-Diamond.htm .
It has 850/1900MHz HSDPA, and is quad band GSM. Short summary: no front-facing camera, matte back and bigger battery.

Sigh.. A different version (DIAM110) really breaks my last hope. I am sure many of us were misled to purchase the non-US model; with chaotic origins from India, Europe, HK, etc, without knowing (1) the claimed 3G couldn't be ued in the US and (2) a US model would come as we are seeing now .. Or is it just my ignorance and mistake? .. Hope some lawers on this forum could help us trade our whatever Diamong with a US Diamond with 3G/DIAM110.. My first and last purchase with HTC for sure.

Unfortunately it was a known fact that the Diamonds sold prior to the actual US release were not intended for the US and the specifications clearly showed (htc.com) that it was not US 3G capable. Problem is there are so many bad resellers that will tell you anything to get you to buy from them. I also have noticed that a lot of the on-line resellers dont list the correct information for all phones however HTC is not at fault for that.
And at the original launch of the Diamond in London back in June, HTC did state that a US version would follow in a few months. We posted that in our news section at the time. Of course, given the often long lag before we see a US version, many folks were skeptical it would really come this soon.
I would love to be directed to any statement on the htc.com website that clearly told the visitors that the Touch Diamond doesn't have 3G in the US.. I have to confess that I noted LATER that the htc.com content is country dependent, but I haven't been promoted to go through all contries listed on their map before I knew that 3g in the US is a catch..
There is no FM
The article states two things I am not enjoying at the moment: there is no front-facing camera, and there is no FM.
Also, it says that a hack could bring the FM back... is it true?

But if you look at the specifications it doesnt list the US 3G Bands. You would have to know which bands are used in the US to catch this. The point here though is HTC has not marketed this in the US. I believe all of the retailers of the foreign HTC phones sell the phones without the blessing of HTC. The problem is there are a lot of suckers here in the US with no patience and make the resellers rich by paying exorbitant fees for phones that were not intended for the US market. I am included in the list of suckers.
"Network HSDPA/WCDMA: Europe/Asia: 900/2100 MHz
Up to 384 kbps up-link and 7.2 Mbps down-link speeds
Tri-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE: Europe/Asia: 900/1800/1900 MHz"
http://www.htc.com/europe/product.aspx?id=46646
That's from HTC's Euro site. No mention there of US bands, just Europe and Asia.
Their US site doesn't list the Touch Diamond at all, since they don't offer it here. Though I'm sure they'll update the site to add the Sprint Diamond, and thereafter the US 3G GSM version once they officially announce it.
I said a hack *might* re-enable FM. The good coders here can help with that more than I can, I'm sure. I'd like to get the FM cab from the Euro Diamond to see if that works.
GSen works just fine though . Happily rotating anywhere I please.

pdagal,
Good review. Is there any notable difference in performance between the unlocked GSM version and the Sprint version, or do they basically perform the same?
Thanks . There's more to follow. I'd say the Sprint version is still a little bit faster. The Sprint version has more obvious bugs though (call send button doesn't always bring up the dialer screen, landscape mode extends to apps it shouldn't support after launching a landscape app). I wouldn't complain about the landscape bug, but the device slows down when it goes into this "extended" landscape support mode.

pdagal - say you could have either one for your personal phone and you didnt mind going with Sprint or ATT. Which would you pick and why?
I'd like to play with them both a few days longer before issuing a verdict . Right now, I'd lean toward the Sprint model, though CDMA really isn't my thing (can't live without SIM swapping). The Sprint version is a bit faster, TeleNav (aka Sprint Navigation) is very good if you don't mind a monthly fee, and Sprint TV is moderately entertaining. But I'll try to remember to post back in a few more days after I've had time to torture them both more.

Thanks - Those are the two reasons I have been going back and forth in my head as to which way to go. The only two reasons I still keep thinking about Sprint is for the navigation software incorporated and having the Sprint TV service (although I do have a Slingbox). I used the TeleNav on a Instinct for a few days and found it very nice.

This is so bloody typical. You go out of you to buy a phone that is not sold in your country and then lawyer up to soothe over your ego.
Now youre going to blame the manufacturer and the shop owners for not treating you like the 6 year-old you seem to be and force them to eat the loss for your impatience.
If i was the judge sitting on this one i'd dismiss the case with costs to you.
I have a 110 on ATT in USA and find EDGE surprisingly useable. It is quite easy to use WIFI for large downloads. I can use for real time GPS maps (Google or Live). I was going to buy US version for 3G but don't think I need to.
The phone was sold IN the US through Amazon.com. No mention of it being Euro or no 3 G for US. I took a chance hoping a ROM would fix it but don't care now because it works so well.
Cheers.
In my particular case, the diam100 was advertised (by the importer) as 3G-enabled for my country. As it failed to comply, I'll return it and get a US when available. My DIAM100 is safe, packed and ready for a swap.
