Here is an interesting observation. I have noticed the signal strength (HTC Kaiser branded, with the ATT carrier), for the most part has been averaging 2 to 3 bars. While at a local ATT store, I noticed the Tilt, 2 display models, were both displaying 4 bars, while mine, (HTC) branded only gave 2 bars. Now add another customer that also had a branded HTC Kaiser, his displayed the same as mine. Yet both ATT Tilts were (4) bars. The rep. indicted that all the ATT Tilts have been tweaked!. I called HTC and they had no clue. Has anyone been aware of this difference?
more bars in more places...even if it's only imaginary.
is the radio software reporting as the same?
Kaiser signal strength seems OK
Signal strength can also depend on what cell your phone is locked onto at the time. If the nearest cell is busy, your phone could be switched to a less busy nearby cell and thereby show less bars. My own observations are that the Kaiser (I have HTC TyTN II) is every bit as good as my previous Dopod 810 (Trinity) and my friends dedicated LG phone. Signal strength is not an issue for me and I spend every weekend in a very marginal area.
Actually I have noticed the same. On my unbranded HTC Tytn II I also only get 2 bars when the band is set to Auto under phone settings. Selecting network type GSM thus forcing off 3G I can get back to 4 bars so maybe the radio rom for the At&T is better?
On my Tilt I've gone back and forth between the ATT and HTC ROMs and I do get about one bar better on the ATT ROM average.
Well thank you all for the posts. I tried switching the system from auto to GSM, and there you go......full 4 bars. Maybe the Auto 3G limits the signal strength.

3G doesn't have as good as coverage as GSM, and may even be coming from a different mast to your GSM signal. 3G normally uses higher frequencies that will not penetrate so far into buildings and is transmitted at a lower power.
It is quite common that you will have a lower 3G signal than you would on GSM.

Signal Strength.
Hi Thanks for all the posts. I went to settings and phone and cannot see where to change the auto to gsm. I have the new ATT tilt. Help I really need a better signal or I will have to take my wonderful new toy back
dot
Whether you have one or five bars is unimportant. What's important:
Are your calls getting to you or going out with acceptable consistency?
Are you getting the data connection and speeds you desire?
Are able to get the messages you want?
Are you getting the battery life you're looking for?
Answer those questions and then decide whether or not to take the phone back. If it's "yes" to all of the above, then you really don't care if it shows 1/2 a bar - it's meeting the needs you've got.
Signal Strength.
Most everything is great except: When I place or receive a call, most of the time we cannot communicate. Everything cuts out. It is frustrating for me and whomever I am speaking with. I would love to change the settings to GSM only, but I don't seem to have that option on my att tilt 8925.

I too have tried 2 different SIM cards. I have also tried turning off 3G. Motorola V3xx shows 4 bars of service, while the Tilt (sitting in the same exact spot, at the same time), shows at most 2 bars, and sometimes even 0 bars.
My Treo 750 also always shows at least 2 bars, when the Tilt goes down to zero.
Very frustrating

I installed this, and before i had it i aways got hspda, now w/it intstalled i only get 3g, i still have hspda enabled via kaiser tweak, but it doesn't show up, i'm in a hspda city(st. louis) i've had it for about a month or so now and cant get it w/this program installed, any fix for this? on the upside i do get more signal strength w/it. I"m using att tilt w/the tilt rom.

In the Kaiser Upgrading forum I added my two cents about this in the Radios thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1783489&postcount=96
It's been my experience that 3G/HSDPA has much better throughput than EDGE at a lower signal strength. "2 bars" of 3G reception still beats even "4 bars" of EVDO/EDGE.
Of course, if you want I could tweak the radio .dll to report 4 bars if it will make you feel better -- It's still 2 bars of 3G though. To use a much less flattering analogy it's the equivalent of me peeing on your back and telling you it's raining.

I think the actual problem isn't that not enough bars are shown, I think the problem (at least for me) is terrible reception. At times, my phone goes down to zero bars, and sends all calls to voicemail. During this exact time, I can have a Moto V3xx and a Treo 750 sitting right next to the Tilt, and both will have at least 2 bars, and good call quality.
PS: My reception seems about the same with 3G on or off. Although I have seen many reports of 3G interfering with reception (ie. when it switches over), in my case turning 3G off completely hasn't helped at all.
HTC Kaiser/TytnII/Tilt Reception sucks!
I had an Mpx220 up until October 2007, which is when I purchased the AT&T Tilt. The VOICE reception on this phone is terrible! I get very low reception at home when I used to get full reception on my Mpx220 before! Also, whenever I'm on the speakerphone, the person on the other line has trouble hearing me. I called AT&T and had them exchange my bad phone. Once I got the new phone... THE SAME PROBLEMS!!!! I went back to my Mpx220 and the reception was wonderful on my Mpx! What's up with the Tilt? Also, the camera has a high resolution, but it takes about 5-6 seconds to take the picture once the button is pressed. Oh, and whenever I lose reception/signal completely and go back to an area where there is good signal, the phone will take FOREVER to recognize it's on a new signal area! Sometimes it doesn't even recognize this and I have to restart the phone. It sucks! This phone, so far, has been good in EVERYTHING except as a phone!!! BEWARE!

Hello all,
I've noticed that with my Kaiser signal usually is very low, no more than two stands... otherwise with all my old phone, for example in my home, signal was full, also with htc touch dual of my friend.
Maybe can be usefull a radio update?
Thanks

My Tilt doesn't get very good reception either. When sitting next to a Motorola Razr V3xx (my Mom's phone), the Razr consistently has at least 2 bars, often 3 or 4 when in my house, but the Tilt has, at most 2 bars, and sometimes even loses signal completely. That never happens on the Motorola, but mine often goes straight to voicemail due to lack of signal.
Now, I realize a Razr and a Tilt are apples and oranges , but they are both 3G, so I would think signal should be comparable. Also, this is not a mattar of one phone simply displaying more bars, but of actual call quality.
I thought it may be a defect in my particular phone, but I have since done a warranty replacement for another issue, and was sent out a new one (it wasn't even a refurb). The new one has the same poor reception.
The Tilt is obviously a superior phone to a Razr in most ways. An ideas why call strength is so poor?
PS: I had a Treo 750 prior to the Tilt, and it too had good reception when in the exact same spot as the Tilt.
Is there a hack/reg edit to get better reception/signal?
Like for Motorola phones EFR=Enhance Full Rate.
No hacks, but instead, uuse a custom wing rom from this site to update your radio rom.... look and you will find
My Wing has the strongest reception of any phone I've ever had. I can even be on the phone in the elevator and sometimes get a few bars in the subway with it. I use the latest Hard SPL which has an updated radio compared to the basic ROM.
yea and my wing get service in area 51. But on the real... First of all it mainly tmobile suckly service in certain area. if i pop in my back up att prepaid sim i get a decent 3 bar that stay in my apartment by the airport . (yes my phone is unlock i just call tmobile and gave them my imei#)

Ohhhh, so that explains it...
I've noticed a significant difference with my phone once I installed HARDSPL and the Radio Rom was upgraded to 03.07.90.
I now have signal in places I didn't use to have hardly any... such as AREA-51
i guess i expect to much out of a gsm 2g provider when u coming from verizon
I've noticed a significant increase in signal at school after flashing the new radio rom... I'm not sure if it's the one that you guys have here... since I got it from somewhere else. In school, where I had no signal before, I get 1 to 2 bars. Where I had 1 bar, now I have 3.
Greets,
I have an AT&T Tilt and 1-1/3 years left on my AT&T contract. Unfortunately, my Tilt is not getting a very good signal (and most of the time, any signal) in my home area. The AT&T signal map shows the coverage as 'moderate' despite having a huge AT&T building 2 blocks away and an AT&T store which, I guess, was positioned just outside the bad signal area.
Someone was recently over with AT&T and a regular phone and he seemed to have a good signal. A friend a few blocks away with a HTC 8925 is in the same boat I am, so it may very well be (i) HTC phones or (ii) PPC's.
If anyone has any idea how I might be able to go about modifying the Tilt to possibly get a better signal, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!
try a different radio and see if that improves reception.
Radio Fixes That?
I was under the impression that the radio effected the camera, screen, and sound; not reception signal strength.
Is this incorrect?

The radio is what controls the phone aspect, much like a Nextel two way setup is better than a dime store walkie talkie setup. Read this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=393182
I also found that limiting the connection to non-3G signals (under settings -> phone) helped as the 3G signal in my home town is a little dodgy and the handset will try to use a crappy 3G signal (and drop calls every minute or two) rather than a half decent 2G signal.
Hello I bought the Diamond yesterday, I'm very satisfied except for the UMTS signal.
I already have a Touch Cruise (it didn't work in UMTS so HTC repaired it on warranty and now it works like a charm).
In the last 48 hours I had Diamond and Cruise one next to the other, and Diamond has always 2 lines less:
* when Cruise is in HSDPA with 4 lines, Diamond is in HSDPA with 2 lines
* when Cruise is in HSDPA with 2 lines, Diamond is in GSM.
Is this normal?
Many thanks in advance.
J.
Everyone has it i have also a TC and indeed, its shows always 2 lines more then the TD.
Same here my htc diamond has always two lines less than my htc kaiser.
The diamond has really a poor UMTS signal reception. I hope they will be able to boost it with a new ROM.
Same here
before with TC i got 2 lines 3G now non
Thanks for your feedback!
So it seems to be a common problem.
Today I checked during all the day, moving from a city to another city, half the time the Cruise had more lines, half the time they had the same.
Other feedbacks? Thanks
same problem here in austria. before i had full signal with my sony erricson t650i, now with the touch diamond i only have the half signal strength...
Well, it doesnt give many bars, but it works like hell here.
When using it as a modem (I often do on the road) I get speeds upto 150kb/s for browsing and emailing and that is just perfect for everything.
My 3G Reception is also VERY Bad.....
I´m using the latest Radio ROM 1.00.25.03.
Because of this weak 3G Recepion the Diamond changes to GSM very often, this eats the Battery up in about 6-8 Hours.....Even if I don´t play around much and the 3G Coverage here is excellent.....
Diamond: 1-2 Bars
Nokia E51: Always full Bars (-87dBm and up)
Hopefully Reception will be better with a new Radio ROM.
If it´s an Antenna issue.........DAMN!!!
I never had a Mobile with THAT bad 3G Reception.
BtW: GSM Reception is fair to good.... could be better also....
Poor 3G signal
That's right,
I have also very poor 3g signal, even though I live in the city area. I have also missed incoming/outgoing calls because the poor 3G signal.
That's not nice
same prob here (big city)
switched manually to gsm not to loose calls
Are you sure this is just 3G and not worse reception in general (ie due to smaller antenna in Diamond)?
in gsm mode i never experienced any trouble with calls.
in auto mode diamond switches to 3g (half signal strength), but one can't call me

Uh, this sounds even worse. Having a bad reception is one thing but showing a "fake reception" is a complete different level of bug.
Just to ensure that I did not get you wrong: You see a 3G reception (e.g. 2 or 3 bars) but the phone does not receive incoming calls and the caller is redirected to your mailbox instead?

yes, got me right.
in my case it's not the mailbox, just a message ("not available" or something like that) because of my settings, but that's petty.
thats why i manually switched to gsm. for using 3g (internet) i have to swith this back again.
annoying!

This should not happen, even when I have the minimum bars in 3G or H others can call me.
When you have full bars in 3G does it work?
same here, although i found that switching off umts and just using plain 3g solved the issues.

yes. when it's stable at full bars or even H, i can use it.
but i deacivated 3g anyway because of powersaving. only using it for web access.
there's a tool for switching 3g in comm manager easily, now i'm happy so far.
So, is it phone or is it just peace of s***?
Hi All
Do you have any fresh idea could it(lousy 3g signal) be hardware or software related issue?
The globe is full of small 3g phones without that kind of problem. That's why I really hope this issue could be fixed with the new ROM radio version...???
I hope I'm right, because if the pain is hardware related, we all have bought pretty expencive peace of crap -not the phone. It is not acceptable if the incoming / outgoing calls are missed!
Same problem, poor 3G reception .
Cruise was far better for receiving 3G signal.
Hope it is software only....
As far as making and receiving phone calls, do you use 3g? Any phone I've ever seen that uses 3g absolutely sucks. My dad's phone, my mom's phone, my girlfriend's phone, my phone. What happens is the call either doesn't go through. If you listen to the dial tone it has a small click right before each tone, if I hear that, it mean's the call isn't going through.
My mom and girlfriend have gone through replacements on their phone, but the 3g still sucks. I've even noticed they don't get that great of reception.
Even on my Tilt, if I switch to 3G i only have 2 bars and apparently people have complained of calling me but I never received the call. Now with Edge, I have full bars, and no one ever complains about the call not going through.
So what's your guy's take on 3g?
Similar to what you've experienced. I generally leave mine turned off the majority of the time, since I have the WiFi running when I'm at home anyway. I turn it on only when I need to browse the web or something when I'm out and about.
Not to mention the immense battery drain that 3G demands. My battery life is dramatically better on Edge as opposed to 3G.
Your provider needs to update/fix their network. This is not a device issue, it's a network issue. Proper 3G (well, 3.5G / HSPA, not just UMTS per se) should also use less power than GSM / EDGE for transfers... (in watt/kbps, though)
I know for a fact that all devices in my signature (that support 3G) can work perfectly with 3G on a proper network.

I don't experience network issues as bad as the OP seems to have, but I've always had terrible battery life on my Tilt and my iPhone, my two most recent 3G devices. My 8525 was actually very good on the battery with 3G running all day long, never had a problem getting through the day.
Maybe the intermittent GPS usage on the latter two? I don't know.

I should go in and ask them about it, just to see what they say. Ask them why the new and greatest 3g is worse than edge. I have AT&T, I live in Washington, and I live right by a Cell tower too (only a 2 or 3 blocks away from it).
I woudln't mind using it for data but the fees here are prohibitive for private use. We use it on our work phones for data and it works well on Telstra.

They'll probably say it ain't so Thing is, when 3G first got rolled out here, we had much the same issues. The big providers here spent some $$$ to replace "faulty" hardware at the towers, and voila, the problem disappeared (2 years ago?). Seems many 3G networks around the world have similar issues to the ones you described in the opening post. I have a sneaking suspicion that one of the 3G cell-tower hardware manufacturers - probably the cheapest and hence most used - makes some really crappy equipment. I could almost imagine that manufacturer is Qualcomm
In all seriousness though, all I know for sure is we had these issues here too, and they fixed them by fixing the towers. (Though of course there is some difference between different devices and how well they do 3G)
From talking to some guys at work Telstra's 3G network has been pretty much flawless for them asides from cost issues associated with Telstra.
I live in indonesia and never have any problem with 3G,. , the only problem is, its expensive,. lol,.
I am in NZ
No problems with 3G whatsoever. Have Imate JasJar - loving every second of it.
New Jersey, USA
3G has always seem pretty good around here in New Jersey with AT&T, but I'm 25 minutes from New York, so imagine how many towers they have on the tri-state area (New York, New Jersey and Connecticut). Very rare to lose 3G reception (exept on the iPhone 3G that everybody complains about losing it often). But important to mention also is that Kearny, town where my sister lives, I lose reception a 100%, my phone's reception just dies, and when I switch it to GSM instead of 3G...voila. Full signal strenght.
wow.. the results turned out quite different than I imagined.
Obviously it's just in my area that 3G sucks. I really wish they would fix this, considering that every phone released now is 3G...and you think someone would notice... well, I'm sure if I wait long enough people will start to notice, but who knows,
I can't remember the last time I had problems with 3G. though I remember before Cingular got bought by AT&T and they were just rolling out there 3G, I used to have problems then, I guess it was due to them configuring/re-configuring the towers. I think the engineers were just going by what the manual said, which weren't the best settings for each area.
I'm on 3G all day everyday on the hour and it's good. even when I'm in the basement and have 1 bar I still receive all my calls and I can make calls. though on this 1 bar I sometimes have to repeat myself every 1.5 minute, but I don't complain about that because it's 1 bar and I'm in the basement. at my friend's apartment I'm the only one that get signal, nothing else work there, not T-Mobile, not sprint, not verizon, not alltel, not vergin nothing else only AT&T works and I get 3 bars of 3G there. I always laugh because he has to leave his phone by the window and use his blue tooth.
I honestly don't think you're by a 3G tower because you should be getting way more than 3 bars. also ask them about the issue you're having AT&T is a good company they will listen to you. call them and open a ticket (before this they will have you go through the basic steps, restarting by removing the battery, etc) tell them you've done that multiple times and yet you have the same issue so it must be a network issue. have them escalate the ticket (they will send an engineer out and he/she will call you, they will work on the towers around your area). don't forget to be polite, no one likes a hot head.
in roughly mid year last year I was only getting edge at my job even though it is a 3G area. at home inside my house had full bars, so I called them up and they worked with me. the engineer stayed in my area roughly 2 weeks to deal with the issue. after that I've had 2 bars of 3G in doors at my job.
