So my Vario III finally arrived today and I've had chance to give it a nice charge and get it setup how I like. Hence, I thought I'd drop a few impressions for those of you waiting for yours to arrive...
The look: It doesn't have the black frontage of the HTC model, but it does have a very nice brushed metal thing going on. The T-Mobile branding is kept low-key with their logo and a simple "MDA" at the bottom of the screen. The Internet button has the Web n' Walk logo. There is nothing at all on the back of the device. I'll try and get a picture of it for you, but I think the only cameras around here are on phones, so it won't be great.
The software: I panicked a bit when I'd done the initial screen calibration and the T-Mobile customisation kicked in... I let it do its thing though, and I'm pleasantly surprised! There's no obvious branding shown anywhere in any of the programs, apart from the Web n' Walk icon and, of course, the homepage of PIE defaults the T-Mobile portal.
The Touch style front end is in full effect works as you'd expect.
There's an installation of F-Secure Anti Virus on here. I'm not sure if it comes with the HTC version, but it doesn't appear to be licensed at all. As soon as the trial runs out I'll be removing it.
One thing that I'd suggest changing immediately is the awful T-Mobile ring tones that are set for the phone ringing, along with a bunch of message alerts and reminders. Oh how I hate those tunes!
Bundled software: The CD is pretty minimalistic but does feature a GPRS monitor and Sprite Backup. There's no Outlook and no TomTom Taster Edition.
That's all I can think of worth telling you for now. If there's anything you want to know, I'll try my best to find out for you.
Does it have the HTC Today plugin on the today screen?
The large digital clock and weather information plus the notifications and tabs for launcher and photo contacts?
I ordered my Vario III Today as a free upgrade!! It arrives tomorrow
Sounds like that's the Touch style front end I mentioned.
It has everything you listed. I must say I'm pleased with how well the weather bit works. Added to that the speed of establishing a data connection and then downloading stuff is far, far quicker than my old MDA Pro (Universal).
I'm glad they got the right device out to you this time.
I managed to get mine ordered at 08:30 this morning and mine should be here for lunchtime tomorrow.
Bummer about the lack of TomTom taster or Outlook. I imagine Tmob have still got an arrangement with CoPilot for SatNav bundles. I'll have to look for a cheap Exchange provider as some of them are giving away copies of Outlook 2007.
How fast is your data speed? and I'll keep my fingers crossed that the Tmob ROMs don't exhibit the SOD that some have experienced.

That would make sense as to why TomTom isn't included. I never thought of that. Luckily I have a copy of TomTom 6 that I can use anyway.
Data speeds have been great. Connecting to the UMTS network here is super fast and download speeds have far exceeded what I got from my Universal, although this is downloading virus definitions and weather reports. I haven't tried general Internet browsing just yet.
I can't comment on HSDPA speeds as it's not available here.

Free stuff always makes me a bit wary. What's in it for them? Do they send you spam, or attach ads to your mail? Is it possible to tie it in with my existing email service (which I control)?
I suppose I could go to the website and find out myself...

I use it for over a year now and never got any spam form mail2web or nasty pop-ups / ads...
They give it away as a free service for personal use and you only have to pay when you want it for professional use...
I never found any strings attached and I can say I've used it quite extensively
I really wish I knew when (or approximately when) T-mobile US plans to release their variant. This way, I can decide to wait or get the unlocked version (and possibly have to switch service providers due to 3g bands)

I signed up before you even replied, figuring it must be worth a shot. Signup was painless, then I just had to tell my mail server to forward incoming mail to my mail2web account.
Setup the account on my phone, gave it a quick test and it works a treat! Thanks a lot for the recommend.

Funny you should say that; the Live applications are somewhat absent. Is there a messaging program I can download somewhere? I always used to use Agile Messenger on this plan until it stopped being free and de-activated itself.
just install the windows live messenger cabs flying arounds in these forums
Hmm. I installed Fring and it didn't seem to be able to connect. I'll try again later though.
I'm a bit hesitant to install the Live stuff thanks to its importing all of my messenger contacts into the phone contacts. Something I really want to keep separate!
I'll keep fiddling with 3rd party programs and keep you posted.

Well I can say they haven't blocked it for the Touch as I gave a college the cab of Windows Live
I use Palringo on my Kaiser on T-Mobile (But my handset is unbranded) and it works.
From what I can tell, palringo seems best. Supports MSN / Yahoo / more... and has PTT Plus it is free...

This is pretty frigging ridiculous. From what I can see, syncronising contacts and calendar relies on having Outlook. How am I supposed to sync if I don't have it?
Got mine delivered this morning.
I havnt got the GPS to work so far (applications connect fine just the skies too cloudy to pick up any satellites).
Coming from the o2 Exec im finding the keyboard a bit small, and some of the keys having been moved around but nothing a weeks of use won't fix. Though using the keyboard while plugged into USB isn't all that comfortable.
The tmobile branding isn't as bad as i expected, though i would have preferred the black finish HTC look.
I've had no problems with connectivity. HSDPA and 3G seem to flip back and forth every now and then.
google maps 2.2 has been released, and it now allows you to get from point a to point b using public transit, even gives you the prices of the public transit as well...
problem is, does anyone konw where to get the the 2.2 cab? i've been to googles site and downloaded the link on my comp, and that ends up being ver 2.1.0.10...i've gone to google.com/gmm and it gives links to download 2.1 as well.
does anyone know where to find 2.2? all the news sites that have talked about it today haven't given a link to the 2.2 download cab. any help?
can get it here from desktop or mobile: http://www.google.com/mobile/gmm/index.html
or cab below:

does anyone know where to get 2.2?

the file size is still exactly the same?
in fact i just checked, they have the same version number too..
im really interested in getting this too,
does anybody have their hands on it?
i was just about to ask...maybe my phone wasn't uninstalling 2.1 correctly, because it still shows up as that version, anyone have 2.2?
yeh, the file i posted is NOT version 2.2, its version 2.1.0.10.
Still on a hunt for 2.2....
I just clicked on the "Maps (Download)" link from my Tilt and got a 404 Not Found error. Maybe they're working on it...
can still use this link:
http://www.google.com/mobile/gmm/stp-js.html
click on 'Windows Mobile' at the bottom
This is good news. I'm a big fan of google maps. Now if we can only find gmaps 2.2 ... I know several bb users were able to use and others are having problems with the official llnk.

How do I get there using public transportation?
New! Get transit directions in more than 50 cities on BlackBerry and many Java-enabled phones.
That tells me that there's not a WM update yet. Java I sort of see, but I wonder why BlackBerry gets an update before WM does?
I just got there on my tilt.. no issues. Thanx for the link

You got what version... 2.1.0.10 or 2.2?
Interesting article I came across ..
"Unfortunately, the upgraded Mobile Maps won't work on all phones that support the older version (including my Motorola Q). It only works for BlackBerry handsets and most other Java-based phones." quoted from here .. http://techblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/06/google-mobile-maps-adds-mass-t.html
In other words .. there is a 2.2 version but ONLY for jave phones and BB right now
http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2008/06/get-bus-and-train-directions-on-go-with.html
all it adds is mass transit directions (train, bus, ferry) nothing too huge

No, data is required for google maps. I think that the gmaps 2.2 version is the Java based gmaps, I think, at least from the video I saw at wmexperts.
No you can't.

I'm afraid not. It's because google maps rely on cell phone towers to update your location. And for it to do that, you need a data plan.
But you have the option of using Tom Tom, IGO, or Mio, etc ... because they don't require a data plan. But these navigators require maps and are not free.
I installed the 2.2 and this is what I noticed:
*NEW "Favorites..." menu option, to allow you add a star/favorites on locations and contacts.
*In "Directions": There is now a pull down menu to allow (current location, contacts, favorite) instead of a check-box for current location.
*It is a even bit more snapper than 2.1 and it has a smooth transition when doing "my location" when gps is on. (Before it had problems recognizing gps is on when doing my location even though gps was on and working.)
-It still reads 2.1 version even when all of the stuff above is added
-There is no Transit option, even in cities that have Transit routes on Google Maps on the desktop computer Internet.
Does anybody have the same result?
Also, does anybody can get Transit, and why in the video they are showing it works. (is official update only for Blackberries like on the video)

I just got the phone yesterday, and I've been messing with it all night. Great device and best I've owned yet, but unfortunately I'm having issues trying to setup Hotmail as my e-mail account. I did some research and some said to sign into Messenger and sync e-mail. But where is Messenger? Is it the messaging application that can sign you into Aim/Msn/Yahoo or an actual Live Messenger program on the device that eludes me?
The other thing is the Youtube Application. Yes I've found it but I'm unable to make it shortcut under programs or in start menu. I did download Total Commander but I'm new to this whole importing .cab thing. Is there anywhere I can find a guide to doing this without bricking my phone?
Any help would be mucho appreciated!
There is another thread on it somewhere. You need to highlight the cab and copy it then go to the windows, start menu, programs directory (I believe thats it) and copy a shortcut there.

When I created my shortcut to the YouTube app, the larger file did nothing. There's a 700kb and 50kb (my estimates could be completely off btw) and only the smaller file that I created a shortcut to launched the app.
Hmm ok. What about the hotmail issue though? Is it even possible or *must* I use gmail?

I'm from holland and my TP ( Vario IV ) came with the stock T-mobile rom. If you are using T-mobile, chances are they left out MSN.
Suggestion : Flash your TP to a different rom ( I use ROMeOS 1.40.1, just like the rest of the world should , but no pressure )
Installing Live should'nt be a problem.
About the youtube thing : what hah2110 said is true.
hope this helps.
I'm using AT&T using the Fuze. I do agree with another comment I read concerning the difficult in using hotmail on a winmo device. It's kinda ironic. :\
I have the music ID program on my Tilt which is pretty nice. It can recognize songs played through my radio speakers and it will identify the title and artist... but it's a monthly subscription after the trial. But the iPhone has a similar program for free, is there a free one for the Tilt?
I'd love to have this program because I'm tired of trying to remember lyrics of songs and then going to google it lol Thanks for any help people.

Don't know about the freebeb, but as for remembering the lyrics, use your phone. What I do is send myself an email with a lyric from the chorus of the song. Get home and google that lyric. 9 times out of 10 I find the song.
Yeah, but its always nicer to just have the program on the phone. I think the whole point behind buying a phone like the Kaiser is so you dont have to text yourself anymore, but to (at the press of your touchscreen) be able to let your phone tell you the song. I too would definitely like this program, without paying $4 a month for it. But unfortunately, the only way to not pay is to have the iPhone plan. Shazaam is only free to those with that plan, as everyone else still has to pay for that program.
here you go its the cingular music id program but its free just requires an internet connection which you obviously have
the vogue???
would that music id work on the vogue as well? if not does anyone know of 1 for the vogue?
yes its for any wm5/6 device touchscreen or not (this program doesnt utilize touchscreen so you need to use the dpad and action button on your device to select things
pazookie..... you are my hero! thanks!!!
Wow, iPhone commercials just barely started advertizing this Shazam applet a few days ago... and here I am with it. Just installed it and threw a handful of obscure songs at it.. it only failed one that I know for fact is out of print and rare as hell, but all the other obscure and rare tracks, it found!
Great program, thanks for the cab!

Why doesn't Google Maps Mobile have an auto-update function?
has anyone in the UK managed to get the Street View feature working. Ive tried to get some street views of london but I just get an error message saying "street view not available" :-(
no more cut and paste?
dunno if anyone else noticed but there is no more cut and paste with this release / sans iPhone functionality. I may have been in the minority of folks to actually use this feature, especially with goecaching and being able to just cut and paste the coords into the search bar and go..
Anyone know if its possible to have different versions of the same app installed on the same device? I tried renaming the google directory but that disables the app..
Very very nice. That street view is pretty cool.
I have installed this but cannot seem to be able to get street view... is this not available in the UK?
