i used to get Edge all the time...and now after going to WM6, i only get GPRS, any reason why? is there a fix?
2 quick questions
1) what app will work so i can enable wifi G ?
2) the gprs didnt work at first but i put in the stuff myself and it worked from a tutorial BUT i have the t-mobile total internet plan and now i don't edge like i used to. also the speeds of gprs now is slower then what it used to be when i didn't get edge (out of edge area). Are there a diffrent setting for the total internet plan i put the voicestream stuff ! any ideas ??

use Registry Wizard...ive attatched it...u can do numerous tweaks...not sure which ones work or not because you will get a lot of msgs before u can run the program...but most work i believe...
It is EDGE, you just need enable the different icon for GPRS/EDGE using registrywizard. There is no speed difference.
One thing I do get is messages telling me that I'm ROAMING when I'm in areas where I didn't get messages like that.
And I only get them while trying to sync for push mail...
What gives?
I'm here in the middle of San Francisco. I just ran a test at www.dslreports.com/mspeed and NEVER saw the 3G icon change. I got 120 kbit/sec.
Anyone know if I need to do something to get it to switch to HSDPA? Anyone else in SF able to get higher speeds on this test?
Robert
If HSDPA / 3G coverage is available in your area, the phone will detect it - assuming that Settings > Connections > HSDPA > Turn on HSDPA is enabled.
Network speed performance can be affected by any number of factors including how heavy the network is being used by subscribers.
see here too http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1567369#post1567369

I was in SF last week and was getting really good download speeds with the 3G turning to H al the time.
Possible Problem with No 3G
First, is this your first 3G device, from Cingular? If so, they may have skipped the "change of technology" step in the upgradeing process...I worked for Congular for 2 years...If they didn' do a change of technology you will only get edge speeds...Hope it helps....

Hmmm, good point, my account online shows a line under the features list of "UMTS Compatible". I *thought* you wouldn't get the 3G icon either w/o that but not sure. FWIW I was getting HSDPA in some parts of the SFO airport last week and not others, so you just might be unlucky...
Richard
not sure if this would help but, how old is your sim card? does it say 3G on it?
I just switched to AT&T so the sim card is new. In an earlier post, isdereks said to go to settings > Connections > HSDPA.
Well, that may be the problem. In Connections, I don't have an icon that says HSDPA.
Thoughts?
thx
Robert
After you got your tilt, did you do cancel the custimizations to avoid having the bloatware loaded on your device? I read at the AT&T forums that one of the consequences of doing this is that you lose HSDPA from the connections tab:
http://forums.wireless.att.com/cng/board/message?board.id=cingular&thread.id=56257&page=2
Maybe this is what happened to you? If it did, you could do a hard reset and it will appear again with all teh bloatware.

Nope. Didn't cancel anything. In fact the list of "missing programs" on that link you posted are ALL on my device EXCEPT the HSDPA program in settings.
Any other ideas?

Same here. I have a Tilt that also does not have the HSDPA setting in options. I use it in Wilmington, Delaware which is a 3G area. I also never get the H symbol when transferring data. However, on the dslreport speed test I get a speed of 432kbps. Might there be a registry setting that serves the same function as the HSDPA button under Connections?
P.S. I did not cancel auto customization and this is a brand new phone with only Opera installed.
432bps is above the 3G Max of 384kbps, so I'm guessing you're in fact in 3G+ already even if the logo isn't there. I get about the same speed with the logo on.

on the Tilt - the default icon for everything is the "E" - and i believe HSDPA may be off by default - there is a file call HSDPASwitch.exe in the \Windows directory - run this and see if the check box is checked - if not check it - not sure how to enable the 3G icon .. yet

Not in mine. Anyone else see this? FYI, I have 3G icon on ALL the time. Well, once yesterday I saw something else (I think it was E). I have never seen H and I've never seen speeds above 200kbps.
And unless I'm wrong, HSDPA is in a lot of the bay area. Any way to determine for sure if HSDPA is in the areas I frequent? Map?

Now that was a good post. Good amount of info. No I hadn't checked "show all files." When I did that, I saw the file you were mentioning. HSDPA was checked.
I had not installed any 3G icon. It's just always been showing 3G (except briefly E over the weekend). Never seen H in 3 days. Never been above 200kbps.

strange - i haven't seen a 3g icon - but see H all the time - but i have done some tweaking - and enabled HSDPA as described above.
sounds like you are in a 3g area most of the time - hopefully you get HSDPA as well.
just reread the post - noticed you said HSDPA was checked - Not sure why you don't get faster speeds - have seen > 1000k
there is also an "enable HSDPA icon" registry setting - don't know of HSDPASwitch sets this or not - i will take a look for it -would at least let you know if the phone thinks it is in HSDPA

To restore the "H" icon when HSDPA data is in use, there's a registry tweak - thanks to HiwayFuzz for the tip:
HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\RIL and set EnableHSDPAIcon to 1
I just got my Tilt last night, then called ATT and had the IMEI put in and made sure to ask that 3G is enabled.
However, I'm in my classroom in NYC right now, and all I get is an "E" above my bars, which I assume means edge. I have 3G turned on in comm manager, why am I not getting it?
I'm running dutty's touchflo rom for tilt beta, also i just ran a speedtest and it was 119kbps down so definitely not 3G, how can i fix this?

It depends if there is 3G available in "that side of town"
Yes I've checked the coverage viewer, I mean I'm right in NYC and 3G was always active on my Helio Ocean when I had it.
When I am not actively using the deivce for transferring data, it seems to "fall back" to Edge. -Then when I transfer data I'll see the 3G or H icon to indicate a better / faster connection.
I am wondering if this isn't the desired funtionality to save power? -I have read in many many places that Edge is much more battery friendly than 3G and / or HSDPA

Where are u in NYC? Cross street? Area?
Im in mid-town with full 3G.
Also, if I'm not mistaken Helio runs on one of the CDMA networks(Sprint/Verizon), so having 3G on your Ocean wont necessarily mean that you'll have it on your Tilt.
The 3G Icon has never displayed on my tilt. I live an area that supposedly has great 3G coverage.
It's quite annoying since all the screenshots I've seen of the Tilt are always displaying the icon.
I get the E, H, and very rarely the G icons but I've never seen the 3G icon.
Any ideas?
Well,
The H is for HSDPA, which is higher speed than what the 3G denotes....so I'd say that you are doing just fine.
Yeah, I do get he H quite a bit.
But I just find it strange that I've never seen the 3G Icon.
Maybe because I am not using the stock AT&T ROM. I'm using Q-Mobile 1.2
Is the 3G icon specific to the Stock AT&T Rom?
Yea, is there a cab that changes the icon to 3G?
I have the stock AT&T ROM in my Tilt. When it goes online, the 3G lights up first, then, when I am lucky, an H replaces it. The difference in speed is noticable when the H is on. You can use Kaiser Tweaks to enable HSDPA on the Tilt - stock, it only allows access to the slower 3G speeds.
Why would you want to disable the higher speed transfer?
The H icon you are seeing is actually a good thing as it means that AT&T now has full HSDPA coverage in your area. In my case, the first three months that I had my Tilt, the 3G icon showed when idle and the H icon showed when I was downloading data. One day, out of nowhere, the 3G icon disappeared and has been replaced by the H icon for good. I have now noticed two things that are different now that the H shows all the time.
1. I can now make a call without the data connection being disconnected.
2. My download speeds shot through the roof! When the 3G icon was there, I had speeds of about 550kbps. Now I get speeds of 1000kbps!
Dont worry, I too panicked and tried to fix the missing icon, but even after a hard reset didn't remedy the situation, then I knew it was something tower-based.
H is good. It's amazing. It's like cable internet in your pocket. (OK...but close...)

On a Tilt you can also go to Start / Programs / File Explorer / My Device / Windows / HSDPASwitch to enable and disable HSDPA. You can even create a shortcut to it and put it in your programs folder or start menu.
There's a lot of hidden goodies in the windows folder. Everyone should just browse through there and see if they find anything interesting. (Field Test is there too!)

HSDPA is the fastest type of 3G available. Think of the H as the strongest possible connection.
In my city, I get 3G icon in the phone mode while not connected to the internet. While I was in Las Vegas, I get the H icon in the phone mode while not connected to the internet. It's strange but it's true. I've always thought the H icon is for data only but apparently H is also in phone mode too. I get the H icon in my city only when I'm usnig the AT&T's data and only while there's data session. When data is idle, it change back to 3G. But when I was in vegas, it never changed to 3G. It always displays H.

I found sthg really weird in my unlocked ATT tilt today. I m curently using T-mobile. As many of you know that, you rarely get signal/reception in basement if you are using t-mobile. but today, when i went down to the basement, reception was gone w/ the E icon, then after a while, the E icon was changed to G, then the signal was detected and I could make phone call too. and the carrier on the screen is still T-mobile. Nothing changed except the E/G Icon. I then checked w/ my friend who is also using T-mobile(nokia phone), no reception at all. Does any one know what the difference between E and G icon on top of the screen is? will I be charged for some type of service fee or something if I make calls or use the Tmobile web w/ the [G] icon? please tell me if you guys know anything about it.
thanks in advance...
The "E" is picking up an edge reception, i get it in the UK sometimes because i have a crappy t-mobile signal in my house. When its displayed i cant make phonecalls/txts etc so might be picking up another carriers signal because i dont think t-mob uses edge here. The "G" is gprs just the basic slow phones signal.
G is when GPRS is available, E is when EDGE is available. No extra charge. This could have been easily answered by looking in the manual.......page 29
I guess this may be different for T-Mobile (and could possibly vary on the ROM you're using) but the E on my device is for EDGE service, and G is for 3G service. 3G, obviously, is the better of the two. But I'm on AT&T of course...

I don't think T-mobile has 3G here in NY.
Thanks for all the replies above
so, the signal of GPRS is stronger than the EDGE? if yes, then we are all able to get reception even if in basement. No need to get verizon anymore... lol
but why can't my friends' phones picked up any GPRS signal? is that because their phones don't support GPRS?

No no no, g is not 3g, G is GPRS, the slower version of EDGE, thats the reason why you can call in your basement now!
G is GPRS
E is EDGE
3G is UMTS
H is HPSDA
first is the slowest, last is the fastest, so if the fastest is not availible, it switches to a slower one, like happened in the TS situation
My icon used to pretty much always be on 3G, sometimes switching to E when I drove to my brothers house which is about 25 miles away. But recently I haven't been seeing 3G at all, but only H. I did see E a couple days ago, but I haven't seen 3G in more than a week now. I thought H was only supposed to show up when you were using a data network or something? At least that's what I read somewhere on here a while ago... Any explanations?
that H is wat you want to see
first H shows up when downloading data means you're using HSDPA, but is H shows up when u're not downloading data, you have HSUPA too
Ya, as XtreMe_G indicated this is easily answered by opening up the manual.

Yeah, I know HSDPA is what I want to see the most, but when the hell did AT&T have HSUPA? I live in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia Metro area... Anyone else from the area noticing this?
And as for the OP's question about E and G, there is no difference between signal strength and ability to make voice calls. E just means that the cell offers Enhanced G.
Whether you see a G or and E (or 3g or H) is dictated by the data connection offered by the cell - which has no baring on voice at all.
If you have any signal, you should be able to make voice calls - the speed of the data connection (ie for web/email etc) is the only thing indicated by the Letter - except that 3g/H can also do simultaneous voice and data where G (and E) can't.

That's what I thought, but then I tested my data connection speeds and when I'm supposedly on basic GPRS the speeds are much greater than anything either GPRS or EDGE could accomplish (unless EDGE was having a perfect day).
I did notice however that it only shows G instead of 3G when I force the phone NOT to use 3G while 3G is available in the area. If I allow it to use 3G service it shows up as "3G" and the speeds remain the same. As soon as I force it not to use "3G" it shows up as just "G" but the speeds stay the same.
"E" or EDGE always seems to be indicative of the correct speed. But for my device it switching between G & 3G are one in the same, and the speed doesn't change at all.
Could just be a glitch with the software on my phone, but that's how it is for me.

Thanks for that.
That will be the reason that when I used a tomtom one and got traffic via my bluetooth phone, a traffic update would kill any call I was making.
I assume I am correct in also expecting my TyTn II to ignore voice calls (or drop gprs data connection) if I am using the TyTn II for internet access for my laptop and a voice call comes in?
I sometimes get the E but as far as i know we dont have Edge in t mobile UK.
how do you remove the G?

My G Icon changes to E Icon
Hello,
I have a small problem...
First I will Switch ON my wizard. After Switch ON I will see a G Icon at top of the today screen ( That is correct ). When I press the power button, the screen goes off (i.e Goes to Sleep Mode ) and again I press it to wake up. but now the G icon will change to E icon.
I not understanding why this happens.........
Also when i connect to GPRS internet but it shows as I am connected to EDGE with E icon ( This happens on when I wakeup the device )
My probem is that why the icon should change when I wakeup the device.
To confirm you that, I have also disabled the "EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon" setting in registry.
This problem will not occur in wm5 but only in wm6 or wm6.1.
In wm5 There is no E icon or it is not showing as "connected to EDGE" when I connect to GPRS internet.
Please any one help...............
Thanks in advance
