Decimal Longitude Problem - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hi,
I'm using a Vodafone 1615 phone with a Windows Mobile 6.0 rom. Whenever I'm in a negative decimal longitude area (e.g. -0.9999), the GPS Timestamp being returned from the gpsapi.dll stops being set (i.e. is a null value). However, as soon as I enter a negative "non-decimal" longitude (e.g. -1.0000), the GPS Timestamp immediately starts returning valid values again! :-( There is also no problem in a positive decimal longitude area (e.g. 0.9999 works fine). I've tried the basic Windows Mobile GPSSample program provided by Microsoft and this has the same problem. Has anyone else come across this bug on the 1615 phone?
P.S.
My workaround is to ignore the GPS Timestamp altogether and simply use the phone's time but this is clearly not ideal.
Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Derrick

Static Navigation on Kaiser: How to switch off!

Hi,
after searching some time, I found this post here very helpful to switch off static navigation for the internal Qualcomm GPS chip:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1747266#post1747266
Open your favourite registry editor, and search for
HKLM\Software\HTC\SUPL AGPS\GPSMode
Mine was set to "2", and I got the bad behaviour when slowly walking or geocaching.
Switching it to "1" led the GPSr to send each position without modifications or smoothing directly to the internal com port: Perfect!
Now my Kaiser can really replace the old Wizard with external SirfIII-GPS!
Hope someone searching for i.e. Geocaching, Walking and Jumping Locations happily find this thread.
Cheers, Horst
It doesn't work for me. I set it to 1 and nothing could connect to the gps device. resetting it back to 2 corrected this problem.
Hi,
just tried the registry modification and it seems to work! I had a short walk and tried TT6 and GPSDash2. I haven't tried GPSDash while walking before this modification, but it really works fine even at slow walking. TT also updates the current location very good, but has some trouble in viewing the right walking direction. I will have a further look at TT tomorrow while driving, maybe if there are any differences in the behaviour or something. Feedback will follow...
HansOlo
EDIT: FYI, I'm using an unbranded Kaiser with german stock rom 1.56.407.3, radio 1.27.12.11
Umh, I'm not so positive about this anymore - I will have to do more test to see if it really is now _pure_ Raw NMEA.
Do you have also a constant offset of about +100m in altitude compared to sirf3?
Horst
This is what the GPSMode does:
http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1735285&postcount=347It's actually sets up how AGPS works, so it's not static navigation.
I found my "no connect" problem. If you set GPSMode to 1 and AGPS to 1, device connection fails. I turned off AGPS and the connection works again.
I have tried this and it does exactly as the OP said in my case. I get a constant GPS feed, so can now use my Kaiser for geocaching at last!
For the record, I'm using Memory Map Pro V5.05 Build 662, with GPS on COM4 & 115200 Baud. I also use AE Buttonplus to map a key to keep the device from turning off whilst using MM.
I tried setting both GPSMode and AGPS to various values and each time it behaves exactly the same
I agree. no differences for me either.
Do a soft reset and try again. It's only a subtle difference though, so if Static Nav is not a problem for you before, you will hardly notice the change.
This is awesome news, I can't wait to try it out! Last time I tried to geocache with my Tilt I never could get it to settle down on any one spot. It kept sending me 30 feet in random directions. I switched to my bluetooth unit and it sent me right to the spot.
Report back here afterwards then, most people seem to think I'm talking crap
I launched GPSTest today while waiting for someone in my car and noticed that the reading stayed constant for the entire time I was there, only started changing after I started moving.
I'm going to double-check my registry entry and also try disabling AGPS to see if that makes a difference.
Today I was walking in areas with limited visibility to satellites. I set GPSMode to 1, but still got alternating freeze and jumping of the positions. Too bad, this does not (or only partially?) solve the problem. Are there other devices with the same GPS chip built in? If they have static navigation switched off, there should be a way to do it for the Kaiser, too...

But what's interesting is that BeeLineGPS the reading updates constantly.. Not sure if it did before or not, honestly.. I'll have to change the value back to 2 and see out of curiousity.
GPSTest still stays at a static value... Interesting.
Some applications add static nav on their own by ignoring random small differences in position. Maybe that's what you're seeing here?
Just an idea: There are different data streams, $GPRMC, $GPGGA, etc. Maybe not every program uses the same, and at least one holds the raw positions, whilst another contains the computed points? Have to check this afterwards.

I tested with BeeLine GPS and that's how I knew nothing had changed from before.
It looks like it's continually updating, but it's continually updating with the incorrect values. Walk in a square and look at the raw latitude and longitude and you'll see what I mean.
I checked whether the different data streams hold different positions: they don't.
If Kaiser continues like this, I don't have any more wishes for geocaching. Horst, this really helped me. I set HKLM\Software\HTC\SUPL AGPS\GPSMode to 1 (was 2) and restarted.
I don't know if it actually switched off static navigation, but the device now behaves like it did. It is MUCH BETTER.
I love this gpsVP software for geocaching and also for simple navigation (it uses Google maps). Today I tried to navigate a few times to randomly selected points and it was great: the distance was slowly decreasing as I was slowly (1 km/h or less) approaching the waypoint. I haven't experienced this before and I'm really sensitive about what my Kaiser does.
Finally I don't have to walk fast for a few seconds for the GPS "to catch" the speed and to start updating coordinates. Perfect!

O2 XDA Stellar Wireless Connection settings for TOMTOM 520

Can anyone help on this, ive followed the instructions on TomTom's website for setting up a link manually, to get my tomtom 520 to use the phone for wireless info, such as traffic etc, to no avail. I realise that this might be a tomtom problem, or just the string used to dial from the device.
Ive tried the following, if I do this through the tomtom device itself and try either automatic or manual settings it doesnt work.
O2
Postpaid
mobile.o2.co.uk
mobileweb
password
dhcp - auto assigned
dns 1 193.113.200.200
dns 2 193.113.200.201
it also says the string should be :- at+cgdcont=1,"ip","Access point name","",0,0
the tomtom auto setup excludes the ,"",0,0 off the end, but even if i put it in manually it still doesnt work. Tomtom support are not very helpful at the best of times, and the stellar isnt on their supported device list, so im a little screwed from that side. Can anyone help.
Just another note, if i use tt on the stellar itself, it works fine.
Thanks in advance
Was the TOM TOM version used that which came with the application CD. If so o2 should be able to help you with this matter.
Interesting side note the kaiser should automatically use WiFi rather than GPRS whenever an acess point is available and connected
Tomtom
its on a tomtom go520 - a seperate device not on the phone itself
Hello. I'm having the same problem with my TomTom Go 520. Although initially it worked. Tried resetting both units and still, when trying to auto configure wireless data settings over bluetooth it sticks at 20% and then fails a bit later on. I'll keep you posted if I manage to solve it. Just means I can't get speed camera updates or traffic updates over GPRS to the tomtom, I suppose I'll cope.

Possible GPSTest issue?

Disclaimers: Yes, I've done a search and haven't found anything discussing this.
Phone: AT&T Tilt
ROM: dutty's WM6.1 WWE (April 29th)
Radio: 1.64.08.21
Protocol: 25.74.40.02H
Issue: When using GPSTest, the GPS cycles on and off (GPS Starting up - GPS running) every few seconds (roughly every 5 seconds). The fix quality cycles from 1D to 3D in conjunction with this, and it seems to drop satellites and pick them back up.
This issue does not occur with VisualGPSCE. VisualGPS also seems to pick up the satellites and obtain a lock much faster than GPSTEST.
Has anyone seen this, and if so, are there any recommended fixes?
ETA: Of course, now that I've made this entry, it (GPSTest) seems to be working fine...go figure! I'd still appreciate if anyone else that has seen this problem would chime in, though.
GPS Test problem
I developed GPSTest and have not had any similar reports.
GPSTest calculates the speed between each Lat/Lon point it receives and averages it over several points, when the average speed drops below around 300kph and the fix is good the status screen will display "GPS - Running", until then it will display "GPS - Starting Up".
I hope this problem was just a one off. If it happens again let me know and I will look into it.
GPSTest works great for me and I'm using dutty's 6.1 rom also. I actually run GPSTest before I run my tomtom software and it helps connect way faster than running my tomtom software alone.
What do you have the baud rate set to?
Thanks for the info. Anyone know where I can find a GPSTEST Cab file? I googled it but only came up with an exe of it.

I think there is no cab because it's just an exe file to copy and run directly on your device, without any further install. If needed, create a shortcut in your programs folder.
Whenever I run GPSTest, it opens and begins scanning ports. Whenever it hits COM4 (port that my GPS is set to in Windows), an error message appears as a bubble coming out of the [E] Edge icon on the top bar stating "Cannot connect for an unknown reason. To check your connection settings and change them if needed, tap Settings. If the problem continues, reset the device..."
When it begins scanning my phone establishes a data connection as well (I can manually disconnect from Edge / 3G first, and then open GPSTest and I observe it try to connect again). Also the red LED never starts blinking on the phone.
With a stock AT&T rom, my Tilt's GPS worked fine with Google Maps.
Now that I loaded on ROMeOS v4 with Radio 1.65.20.29, I cannot get the GPS to work no matter what settings I attempt (hence why I tried this GPSTest program).
In adv. config I have GPS Photo enabled. Under A-GPS Settings, I have AGPS enabled. The External GPS program has GPS Program Port set to COM4, then on the H/W tab I have GPS H/W Port set to none (could this be the problem?) and the baud rate set to 4800. Under the Access tab, Manage GPS automatically is checked. Then under KaiserTweak I have Assisted GPS Enabled.
If I posted this in the wrong spot, just let me know. I found this thread by searching and it seemed in the ballpark at least.

Two problems with the XDA Ignito - Please Help

I have two problems at the moment with the XDA Ignito. It is a great handset otherwise.
The first problem is not one that concerns me too much. It is when I add recipient to a SMS and click to send, it shows an error message saying the format of the number to send to isn't correct or something similar but asks if I want to send anyway. I know that sending texts works fine though apart from that error which is just a little annoying if it is going to pop up every time I want to send a message.
The second problem is one that annoys me quite a bit more. It is to do with the GPS. I believe at the moment, it is getting the location from mobile phone masts and not the GPS satellites.
In GoogleMaps, it is saying My Location is within 1800m of a greyish/blue pale circle and there is a brighter circle in the centre of the big circle.
I've seen a video on YouTube of one using the HTC Touch Diamond and they have managed to track the satellites fairly quickly and my friend who also has the same handset as me says his GPS works fine. Takes a few minutes to connect to several satellites he said.
If anyone wants to know my GPS settings, I have program port on COM4, the hardware port is None and baud rate (or whatever it is is set at 4800) and mangement of GPS by software is set to be managed automatically.
I can admit that I have not tried this outdoors yet but have sat at a window with this so it should be working.
I think I've read somewhere about incoming beams being set on receive all incoming beams can affect this working? Is this correct? Oh, and all the other settings are defaults. Using the standard O2 ROM that came on the device. Think its dated the 8th Aug if that is any help.
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.
I must also add, there does not appear to be any QuickGPS listed under programs. Where could it be?
Can anyone confirm whether this is normal? I understand those with a HTC Official ROM will have it but not sure why with my O2 ROM it is not listed. Could it still be installed yet not listed under programs for some unknown reason?
i can't help you with the sms problem, however with the gps - you will likely not get enough reception on your gps receiver indoors, since the satellites must be in sight, at least three of them to be able to determine your position by triangulation. so go outdoors and try it again, then it should work.
For some reason, o2 appear to have decided to remove QuickGPS. Whilst using the o2 rom I never got a gps fix even leaving the device for around an hour sat on the window sill.
I got fed up, flashed a new HardSPL and Dutty's ROM onto the device and then updated the QuickGPS data. This worked perfectly and within a minute or two I had full gps lock and tomtom was able to pin point my position accurately.
On a seperate note, line of sight isn't particularly important I found as I can sit in my living room around 4 metres from any window and it picks up satellites from cold as quick as standing outside. This is the same with my old phone as well (artemis) which managed to pick up a fix very promptly even tho it uses a different gps chip.
O2 haven't included QuickGPS as this functionality is supposedly included on the chipset and downloads the data from the carrier signal.
I found that with Assisted GPS enabled, my phone was tracking location using mobile phone masts, as soon as i turned it off the GPS performance was fine. (You can use Advanced Config to do this)

Advanced Config?
I think Advanced Config is a program that you install on your device. Gives you all sorts of options to make modifications to settings and tweak the device to improve on performance. I'm not sure I want to try this at the moment. Would rather have the device working as I think it should be using the current O2 ROM that came on the device.
I'm going to check out the GPS again when I go out later on and see if it works.
I still have a problem with the Text messaging where an error pops up before sending the message. Says something like format is not right for the phone number even though I have added the person from the contacts list. For some reason it just doesn't like the format the number is in.
Everything else with the device is fine though.
Oh one more thing, just out of interest, is it possible to obtain QuickGPS (CAB file) without having to change ROM? I once got the HTC Streaming Media application for my XDA Orbit from somewhere on this site.
Thanks.
I'd also be interested in Quick GPS as the GPS lock on my Ignito is terrible compared to my Orbit 2....
I've had a dig around and all I can find are failry incomprehensible registry hacks etc etc.
I've desabled AGPS via Diamond Tweak and I'll see if it's any quicker to get a lock now....
I'm a bit confused to bbe honest!
I've been outside with the GPS. It is amazing just how accurate it is now.
One thing I've noticed though is when I had a play around with the device this evening. It was asking me to enter my system and sim pins one after the other as though I had switched the device off. The device must have some how reset itself while in my pocket or maybe due to a period of inactivity.
I have pretty much the same power settings as what I had on my XDA Orbit.
I have the screen and phone power to standby or whatever it is called after 1min when running on battery and 10mins when connected to mains, could that trigger this in the XDA Ignito?
Thanks.
Still got to look into the SMS issue. Might be O2 settings related but got a feeling it is software.
glad you got your GPS working mate!
Still got the problem with the SMS error dialog box popping up before allowing me to send the message. Anyone have any ideas on how I'd get rid of that?
Thanks.

GPS: no speed or direction

I have an AT&T Tilt with WM 6.1. The GPS reports location but fails to indicate speed and direction. So, programs like Google Maps and Windows Live Search work ok, but programs like Turbo GPS and GPS Utilities report location, but have no data for speed and direction. Is there a way "turn on" the reporting of speed and direction from the GPS for 3rd party programs?
this isn't how GPS works.. the GPS receiver just reports back the location every second. speed and direction are calculated by the program

That's what I thought. Michael, the author of TurboGPS, corrected me. He examined the "raw log" of what the hardware gps was reporting on my tilt and it was reporting null strings where the speed info is supposed to be returned to the program from the hardware gps.
I assume AT&T disabled that function of the hardware gps to force purchase of the Telenav subscrition.
I read a story somewhere that said If it only have three GPS satellites it can only locate you on a 2D pane. To get Height it would need a 4th satellites, and thus 3d location.
Maybe the lock isn't strong enough to calculate to speed.
Do you know how many satellites you are seeing and receiving from when you're locked?
Maybe disable AGPS? I've heard that messes with the NMEA output.
