Would you recommend a Kaiser to a friend? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Or me?
I can't recommend a Treo 750 to a friend based on my experience (even though it's been tolerable with WM6).

What's the point of this poll? Every person has different needs. I have lots of friends I would never recommend a Tilt to. Has nothing to do with issues of the phone, its just that a PPC is not right for them.
I actually have a good friend right now that was looking at a Tilt when I bought mine. I've already told him he'd probably be happier with a BlackJack than the Tilt. Why? Because he needs a phone and doesn't really need (or even want) a PDA (he has told me he never liked Palm's in the past). As I've told him, and lots of other people, PPC's are PDA's with phone capabilities. Smartphones are Phones with PDA capabilities. There is a huge difference between the two. There is also a big difference in the types of people that use the two different devices. Heck, i work in a high tech company (I think Microsoft is the only software maker larger than us) and most of the people I work with had an 8125 or Apache device in the last year or two. Most of them hated it, but they were forced to buy it. Sure, part of that hate was due to how crappy WM5 and the official roms were on the Wizard and Apache, but most hated them because they just wanted a phone. Now most of these people have BlackJacks and they love them. Its because they now have a usable phone with hard keys, and it has the ability to do cool things that smartphones can do.
Then, of course, a lot of people (most?) would be better off with a Razr or similar. The just need a phone and nothing else.
So how am I to answer a poll like this? If you are asking for yourself, then I'd need to know more about you, what you are like with computers and other technology, and whether you are looking for a PDA / mini computer, or are you looking for a Phone as your primary device. If you are the right type of person, then yeah, in my less than one week of experience with the Tilt, I'd highly recommend it to you. I even still recommend picking up a Wizard or Hermes for that matter if I think a PPC is what that person needs (I just let them know they should upgrade the rom to make the most of it).

I tell people the same thing I tell them about my carputer - it's only for people who enjoy hacking around a bit and are really comfortable with computers.
I've been able to turn my Kaiser into so much because I can hack my way around and figure things out. I am not confident that many of my friends could do the same.
So I while I would certainly recommend it to my tech-minded friends - in a hearbeat, in fact - to my non-techie friends I would probably suggest getting an iPhone. Easy to use, cool, but not too heavy on advanced features - in other words, it does everything a non-techie would want.

I would recommend it to friend shopping for a PPC and wanting to select a good PPC.

Damn... Why read so much into everything???
I'll re-word it for you... "Are you happy with your Kaiser?"

Never! I like to be unique and if I recommend it, then I won't be the only one in my circle who has one

ok, ill just put it in simple terms.
The Kaiser is the ultimate PDA for someone who is a Data User and is on a 3G network, it's just seems so convenient to slip it out and search something or do something for a period of time on it. For me, this phone is for the power user
i wouldn't recommend this phone for someone using this phone on a non 3g network, whereas a P4350 would come handy with its edge and its decent processor. I DO NOT recommend the Kaiser if your a big talker on your phone and talk over of 2.5+ hours a day and like to do web browsing at the same time without ever hooking it up to a dock station or car charger.
the truth is, this phone is mainly for the power user and if anyone owned a HTC Tytn and liked it, this is only the perfect upgrade

I already bought one for my brother, so I guess yeah I would recommend it. I do agree with others here though, it is definitely for the more tech-savvy.

Non of my friends/family are "Tech Savvie" and I would not recommend any pda based phone. If they needed a pda type phone then yes I would recomend a Kaiser. It offers the most functionality of any current device. It is "Horses for Courses" My Mother in law can just about cope with a Nokia 3210. My Brother is happy with his SE K800i as he can leave his Ipod and Camera at home. Me I prefer to have the latest and greatest and most feature packed that is available at reasonable/no cost. I am happy to be at the Bleeding edge of technology and actually enjoy having to trackdown fixes, hacks and apps as long as I can get a result.

Depends on the person. If their usage pattern is like mine, then yes. If they just want a simple phone then obviously no.

Moderator,
Please look at this so called poll and see it as overwhelming 'FOR' and remove with result posted.
Thanks.

Looking to buy a Kaiser to replace dead Wizard, I have a few questions...

Ok I have been seriously thinking about buying one of these and have already started saving my money to get one but before I take the plunge and spend almost $800.
I guess my first question is a hardware question. I have read a few posts about people having issues with the USB being "crappy" and also the digitizer cutting out due to loose internal connections. I really want to know if these are very common problems or rare instances of hardware failure.
Seccondly, it seems like the firmware is kinda buggy from things that I've read and that the phone's release was rushed and the firmware suffered the consequences. I know there is no cube on the Kaiser, (honestly glad to hear it... its a memory wasting piece of junk IMHO...) I know that TouchFlo is not on the phone and honestly, it's not neccessary to me.
Third and finally, I have T-Mobile as my wireless carrier and if I were to buy a Kaiser, would it be possible to configure it for T-Mobile's GPRS and EDGE settings for their Total Internet package that I have? I am a big user of the internet on my Wizard and would need it if I bought a Kaiser.
I suppose what I'm asking is are there any serious firmware flaws that drive you guys(and gals) crazy and is the hardware commonly unreliable on these phones? I really like what I see on the HTC website and I have done alot of looking around on ebay and love the performance specs I have read but don't want to spend a ton of money if it's not worth the money. You know?
Any and all help on this matter would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Dan.
Honestly it's not a problem.
My Kaiser (and my Wife's and a work friend) are all fine. There are a few sniggles with the firmware, that I'm sure will be sorted, as lets be honest all first edition firmware's have.
The device DOES have TouchFlo, just no Cube......
The internet etc are all fine... I'm on T-Mobile as well....
Go for it, it's the best QVGA device out there at the moment.
Mine has no problems and is fantastic!.
Matt.

I'm gonna go for it. I figure what do I have to lose? Money? I can always get more... Besides it seems like a well built phone and from what everyone has told me and everything I've read, it seems to be completely compatible with T-mobile which is a plus.
I'm saving guys... Sooner than later I hope, I will be an active member of the Kaiser community but for now, It's Wizard for me.

So tempted to take my Kaiser back.

what can i say, last Saturday i walked out of my local O2 shop the proud owner of a Stellar (Kaiser). id had a Hermes for about a year, my Orange contract ended so i decided to upgrade my contract and phone. After playing around in the shop with a Stellar and an N95 8gb, i made my choice. Alongside the N95, the Stellar stood out and i didnt even think it was a tough choice. Home i strolled with my new toy, happy in the knowledge i had found a worthy replacement for my Hermes......well........
its now been 5 days, and all i can think about is the shop gave me 2 weeks to change the phone! the more is use the Kaiser, and the more i read online makes me want to exchange it! First off, with all that RAM and ROM it still seems less snappier than my trusty Hermes (and yes ive updated Kaiser to Schaps ROM 4.31). Strange. Next i run some of my trusty games: Quake, SCUMM, SNES and GBA emu's. these run worse than they did on my hermes, even worse than a really old xda 1 i used to have. Im getting worried by this point. So then i try watching some TV shows on it. Man, i know how video ran on my hermes, i even watched a good 10 mins of the spiderman 3 that came pre-loaded onto the N95 i tried in the shop so i know how video is MEANT to run. and its not like the piss poor Flickbook show my Stellar was providing me!!! So i start to research my new phone and find out the driver problems that this new phone suffers from. How can a company release this knowing full well the problems its gonna face?? Its a joke! Especially when people are paying serious money for them. I got mine for FREE and im still considering taking it back.
So here it is. Basically I have til the 16th to return it to the shop to get a new phone. Im seriously tempted by the N95 and dusting my hermes off rather than keeping the Stellar. the only thing stopping me is progress on the driver issues! i know with a set of drivers the Stellar will become my new fav toy, its the only thing holding the device back!
So what i want to know guys is, is it really gonna happen with HTC and these drivers, i see so many conflicting stories over this issue and am very confused! Are they really gonna uncripple our devices?? or just make us wait til they release their next overpriced, under resourced phone.
At present i feel im gonna wait til the 16th and if nothing official has been announced then im gonna take it back, trade it for a N95 and drag my hermes out of early retirement!!!
if it can do what you want it to do, and you're happy with it, then keep it.
if there's any possibility that you will be the least bit unhappy with it, take it back.
you've had the same time with both in the shop and you thought the kaiser stood out. what makes you think now that there aren't similar troubles with the nokia down the road?
To me, it sounds like you should hand the Kaiser back, stick with your Hermes for a while longer, and see what happens. Defaulting to the N95 doesn't really make sense - it obviously didn't impress you that much in the shop, and in many ways it's a very different device to any of the WM stuff you've used before, with an all new interface etc, no touchscreen, no keyboard, no compatibility with the software you're used to..
The Kaiser is a good device as it stands, but has the potential to be much more. If it doesn't meet your needs now, then hand it back and wait - something better might catch your eye, or the Kaiser itself might get the upgrades it needs.
I would not expect drivers in the near future, if ever. I already made this mistake and have long since gone past my return window. If you are having doubts, it is best to wait it out until something proven suits your needs.
Or... I'm not advertising or anything, but look for the other thread in this forum, the "another goodbye kaiser thread." Some people have just done what you are contemplating. I myself have gotten an E90 to replace. Would've gotten the N95(which my wife has) but I need a semi-PDA, at least.
thanks for your input, i kind of knew i would be taking it back. really not happy with it, seems slow and slugish compared to my hermes at almost every task! the reason im getting a n95 is cuz i need a new phone with the contract i took so im kin of picking it on default rather than merit. its free so what the hell! my stellar cost me £89 on top!!! im gonna use n95 as 2nd phone and continue using my trusty hermes as my main device!! thanks guys!!! im so gutted cuz i really want to love the Stellar!!!!! BLOODY HTC, THE DRIVER SHIRKING B&*%ARDS!!!
I'd personally prefer slow WM6 to a fast Symbian any day. I'm not going to get in the whole "everything's running perfectly fine on my Kaiser except for 3D games" thing, but the customization, interface and the amount of development that people do for WM is worth much more for me than playing Quake 3 on my PDA.
Just thought I'd advice you to really compare the OS and think about it better.. besides, it's always in around 5-7 days that "hype" is over and you start noticing problems.. every device known to human has problems or issues. Besides, on WM you usually have a fix/workaround to *most* of them.
Whatever you decision will be, good luck!
P.S: I personally *love* Nokia, and if they'd make PDAs on WM - I wouldn't buy anything else.
I have to say that the upside on Series 60 (your N95 option) is that what it does - it does quite well and is rock solid.
It isn't as customisable as the Kaiser, but with Windows Mobile's greater ability (necessity) to make bespoke, you get the downside of stability. The slowness you mention is puzzling...especially vs. the Hermes. Surely you have thrown in something like MemMaid and cleaned the RAM?!
I have never thought S60 to be very fast and a TyTnII should stomp it in speed. Very strange, I think.
BTW, I used Symbian PDAs and phones from the early 1990's until 2007.
there may be hope yet:
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/7085.html
The Kaiser is a phone, not a Playstation. Take it back, buy a Gaming platform, and find a phone that you can use to make calls with, not eat pellets or jump fire pits and whine about why your tiny guy didn't have enough RAM to fend of an evil attack.

A question about the Tilt and Android before i sell it...

I really like the Tilt, but the WM OS is just not for me. I really, really just hate it.
BUT, before i get rid of it, i wanted to know, is there any hope for the near future of running a custom Andoid rom on this thing? not running it within WM, i'm talking about full blown Android stand alone?
Because if thats the case, i might just throw it in my closet for a few months.
if not, it better start packing its bags tonight!
Sorry for OOT, but I have the same feeling towards the OS, bro.
I hate all M$ product so much (make it PC or PPC), but in the end I HAVE TO USE THEM WHETHER I LIKE IT OR NOT.
Just for the sake of compatibility with so many other person I live and interact with everyday.
You gotta learn to face it mate, hence, the frustration. I knew the feeling.
Actually there are alternatives like palm and apple, but only few uses or supports them. Which will make, in the end, worse frustration.
Android
Hi. See this link if you haven't yet.

I'm sure it's a question of time 'till a standalone version comes out.
Cheers,

Android will be further down the road but it will be even later when we see a full-blown OS for the Tilt/Kaiser.
Once an Android OS is available though I will be flashing. I cannot stand WinMo either.
Curious but are you going to the iPhone instead?...I don't believe there are any other choices unless you're just going with a regular, non-smart/ppc phone.
Its going to be at least as long as it takes to release the first Android Phone to the general public, once thats done then the platform will open up more and be more accessible to us devs. I think Android is going to be amazing once its up and running properly on the MSM7200 chip set. But your best bet would be to hold on to your kaiser and put it in a drawer some place and buy another phone if you don't like the OS and the GUI that comes with it, if you can afford to do so. I am not a fan boy but if you don't need your phone as a business tool then the new 3G Iphone is the way to go in "MY" opinion (please do not turn this into an Apple VS Mac thread) Bottom line is HTC makes great business phones that they did a great job marketing as a general consumer "media" device which it is in some ways. But if your holding onto your kaiser in hopes of Android making everything perfect then your bubble needs to be burst..

There are many other phones out there beside the HTC and Iphones Nokia makes some amazing phones that would blow the kaiser and Iphone out of the water! Also the new Sprint "Instinct"(i think thats the name) is also a really cool touch screen based device! Soon everything phone is going to be touch screen only, the way that the general consumer thinks touch screens are so High tech and cool....
Apple sold 1 Million phones in 2 days so people must like something about it. Personally if they upgraded the camera and some other things I would be dropping my kaiser in a second for it but I'll wait for the 3rd generation its going to be sick! Last note and I'll stop! Windows Mobile 7 is going to be a radical change for the kaiser and other Windows Mobile based phones so It may be worth it to hold on to your kaiser until that is released
Thanks for the replies fellas. I have been a very happy Symbian S60 user for about 1.5 years now. I bought a Tilt a few months back because i love to tinker, and the Tilt is the Closest competition to the N95, so of course i had to get it. My first and last WM phone though.
My main phone is a Nokia N95-4, and i swap out every once in a while with an N82.
You hit the nail on the head when you say that this is a "i get emails all day, and need to open word documents while on lunch" persons phone. but for me, its so damn frustrating and boring, i want to rip out my eyes. Thing is, take all that away, and your left with a not very good phone.
I just hope there is interest in the Tilt still for someone to make an Android rom by the time it comes out.
All im going to say is that if it werent for XDA-DEV, i would have chucked it out of my window, because the factory HTC roms are for the birds.
Have to comment on this one!
well, first of all i'm not sure our Kaisers can handle WM7 when it comes out. I don't like the current OS we're using and wanna say that i had a chat with a couple of people here on the forums and decided not to get an iPhone (although i still like it) and hold on to my Kaiser and wait for Android. It will take time, though..
I wish i needed a second phone.
I'd love my Tilt even more if the screen was just a little bit better about where i touch it... I do IT for a small company and there are 3 iphones, a lot of junk phones and my Tilt... Tilt does the most, iPhone is the easiest to use.
If you could buy a better screen for the Tilt, I'd throw down an extra $200 on it.
Back to the topic, I'd also recommend saving it, with stuff like this you will never get what it is worth from anyone and if nothing else, you have a tinker toy.
If you dont like kaiser and can afford, u might as well sell it off now. Its nearly an year since its release and that is the approximate life of a handset ( in terms of specification) .Futher down the year htc pro will be released, with better specs and that handset will be better suited for wm7 or android. Both these OS may not work great in kaiser. ( but for me kaiser has been the best handset ever ( thanks to this forum and hang.tuah)

Well - obviously everyone sees something from a different perspective.
As a phone - the tilt is no better or worse than any other phone i have had. Remembering of course that cell signals have gotten better and more prevalent over time (I was an original Cellular One customer).
I do support for software so I need access to email on a pretty constant basis - I would have to get to the hotel immediately and check email - I would constantly have to have my laptop with me to check email to see if there were any problems brewing. I no longer have that "attchment" to the laptop. I have a freedom with this phone that I have never had before.
The fact that I can take it to the gym and listen to bluetooth headphones and get my music PLUS!
The fact that I can watch videos on the plane PLUS!
I can text and take and send pictures PLUS!
The fact that I no longer have to carry TOMTOM with me (the unit) when I am on the road and I ALWAYS have TOMTOM with me PLUS!
The fact that I can now whip out my phone and play a game when i am stuck for a few minutes and bored PLUS!
The fact that I can now find the local theater and see what is playing easily or the local Mexican restaurant PLUS!
The fact that I can get weather anywhere in the world easily PLUS!
The fact that I can get/add/change airline tickets easily PLUS!
The fact that I can add new programs to the phone easily PLUS!
So - from MY perspective - this is a drop dead incredible wonderful cannot do without it tool that makes my life better and more fun. It will only get replaced when there is something better available that does it truly better/faster/cheaper than my TILT.
From my vantage point,
Bill
Somehow, i really really doubt that... WM7 might use graphics a whole lot, and our phone doesnt have acceleration... We can just hope people can cook WM7 with drivers... Plus its still 6 months away, android is our best latest choice...

Have to ask, if you have the better nokia phones, why not just link a N810 tablet to your phone via bluetooth ? They aren't bad little devices. Except they run a version of linux. But there are apps that let you do alot of what you need a PPC/Laptop for.

Nokia E71

Hi Guys, I don't know too much about the difference in phones, I know I love the HTC Trinity but, my Network is offering me a Nokia E71 as an free upgrade, is it worth it?
I tried to read a little about the Nokia E71 and it sounds good so far however, am I gonna be as happy as I am with my HTC Trinity, is there anything I am gonna miss? I will always be a part of this forum regardless of which phone I use.
its a NICE phone. I think it looks a bit gaudy, but the keyboard's nice. And i've developed an intense hatred of wm, so any cahnge is nice.

Hi fzzyrn, thanks for replying. It interest me what you said about WM, do you think Symbian OS would be any better before it is cooked? Can you bake/cook Symbian ROM? Hmmmmmmmmmn, I am here doing some serious thinking.
no idea about the rom cooking, but it doesn't seem likely. You see, alot of higher end nokia users are businesspeople, and nokia is generally pretty good about software optimization.
i dont like that i have to install a whole bunch of software to get my phone the way that i want it when the e71 (or e61i in my case) already comes with pretty much everything that i use. Also, i've found touchscreen wm to be a bit difficult to use.
the question is, what do i use?
The answer- calender, alarm clock, phone, contacts (alot of them), sms, email.
i wont say the wm isn't "fun", but for the kind of stuff i do, its not particularly easy to use, and i get impatient waiting for the slide keyboard to change screen orientation.
What netowrk you on, if you haggle a bit, you might be able to get the Diamond if they offer it.
I used UIQ (so symbian, but not exactly S60) amd it was great. I had a P1i and it was touchscreen. It worked fine for what I wanted, but was a bit slow in opening things.
Overall, for calendar, contacts email, the small things symbian is ok, for word, excel, long periods internet browsing, stick with wm

LOL, I wanted to take it, the network sales rep made it seems like the best thing since slice bread. I will take it then, to be honest i wanted to wait a bit longer to see if they'll carry the Diamond. I don't think Three UK is gonna carry the diamond anytime soon.
From what I've heard, they are best suited for Symbian Operated Phones. My Trinity is actually from Orange (got it from my wife, she had issues with the touchscreen) but i unlocked it and now I am using it on 3 uk.
The TYTNII is the only wm phone they carry and I heard it isn't going too well on the network.
Oh well, I wanted a diamond but a E71 will work just fine I guess. I use my phone mostly for business (email, contacts, calendar task, notes, etc.) I don't use the MS Office application that much, all that could wait untill i get to the Office. I do surf the web a lot though especially when I am out on site. I really appreciate the feedback on the subject
yep. go ahead and get it.
send me your trinity if you want hinthint.
Send me the E71 if you don't like it, hinthint.
I have more posts than he does hinthint.

yet i have more posts per day.

if you get it for free, of course, take it.
using it is a different story. i used nokia for several years (symbian 60 and 80) but since i am used to WM and the forum here, no chance for nokia anymore (only for my wife)
I have another thought guys. Check this out, I can now switch network and go with o2, get an iphone or stick with 3 and get a Nokia E71 or a TyTnII.
The Nokia 71 is new, iphone 3G is new and the TyTnII is old, been out since 2006 I think. The iphone I would have to pay some money for but that unlimited data plan and hotspot is a bit interesting to me. It is getting a bit complex for me now.
what do you use your phone for?
if you're heavily into business and calender, stick with the e71
if you're a "birkenstock wearing, clove-smoking vegetarian hippie" (not my words, 500xp if you can identify origin), get the iphone. Actually if you listen to music pretty heavily and you don't mind the software keyboard, get the iphone.
DON'T get the kaiser. What with the age, the video drivers (the mobile division of ati closed down, its that bad...) and the size, its not particularly worth it.

I've been hearing that phrase since college and to be honest, I never knew where it came from. I was busy googling the phrase and still haven't found its origin, i give up, you are gonna have to do me a favor and tell me.
its a term that the Princeton Review uses to describe the most politically liberal schools and institutions.
There may be another origin, but this is the one that i picked it up from.

It would have to be one of them Ivy Leaguers huh?
I've put a entire twist in this phone hunting thing. I just happen to Call a certain network about their phones and plans and guess what? When I got off the phone to them, there is a diamond on it's way to me, will get it Tuesday. 700minutes, unlimited text, free htc diamond all for £30 a month. Did I mess uip or did i get a deal.
I was looking forward to the Nokia E71 but, the screen too small, got used to a bigger screen. The keys are too small, I kept hitting a few of them at ones. Other than that it is a great phone. Someone told me not to use the touchflo on the diamond and I'll be ok. Is that true?

Which phone should I get?

So, long story short, ATT screwed me over with my Fuze. I got a call from a VERY high up person from ATT, and they offered me any phone I want.
I had some problems with the Fuze: Lag, bad battery, touch screen issues, build quality issues... etc. I also hated how I always had to keep on looking for new radios, testing them, testing new ROMs. Don't get me wrong, I love to customize my phone, but it was a little over the top and a little ridiculous.
I was thinking about getting the Bold. I love the screen, I love the keyboard, never used the trackball before, and never used the BB OS. How's battery life and performance on it? I'll be using it mostly for texting, calling, and some word documents.
The iPhone is out of the question.
Thanks for the help!
Maybe get a fuze that works properly? I really have no suggestions other than that.
The best phone to get would obviously be the Fuze. However, if you want some money, then i suggest you get an iPhone (16gb), sell it on eBay and then you'll have a lot cash to buy a new phone (and even have some left over).
Good to know iphoney is out of the question!
If looking for something not too expensive I would recommend Universal because it´s great keyboard and screen!
If $ is not a problem check Touch Pro 2 or Diamond 2
Good luck,

Goes to show that WinMo is not for the weak, the noob, and the ones who don't have time. Get a Blackjack or something. that would suit you.
Btw, I think by any phone, the guy would've probably meant that any phone from at&t and I still find your story highly unlikely cause normal people do not get calls from anyone "VERY" high so to say even if you've been a customer of AT&T since it began. I highly doubt it. But sure, I suggest only 3 phones for you. BB Bold, BB Curve, Samsung BlackJack.
If you like HTC & WM, then go for Touch Pro 2 or Diamond 2.

AT&T is not selling those phones yet.
and yeah, that story is unlikely, not saying you made it up, but the person was probably a tech support supervisor, or manager.
get the iphone. if the X1 is sold through AT&T(which i dont think it is) then get that, other then that, if you dont like to customize your phone, dont get a HTC, get a LG incite or something of that nature.
the person who called me was the Vice-President of Customer Support, I found her email adress on AT&T's website and sent her an email. Got a call 3 days later I can post the link if you guys don't believe me
I do like tinkering with my phone, but only to an extent. I need a long battery for everyday trips, and I need a phone with great signal strength.
I have been with AT&T for 8 years, landline and cellular service. And my Dad's side of the line holds the entire companies phone systems, and theres around 1500 phones. AT&T would not want to lose business
Alright, so a little update, and this was great.....
I get....
A brand new Blackberry Bold
I get to keep my Fuze
And I get 200 dollars in credit
Sell the blackberry,
get a new Fuze thats not defective
Send me the credit for my bills!
