A question about the Tilt and Android before i sell it... - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I really like the Tilt, but the WM OS is just not for me. I really, really just hate it.
BUT, before i get rid of it, i wanted to know, is there any hope for the near future of running a custom Andoid rom on this thing? not running it within WM, i'm talking about full blown Android stand alone?
Because if thats the case, i might just throw it in my closet for a few months.
if not, it better start packing its bags tonight!

Sorry for OOT, but I have the same feeling towards the OS, bro.
I hate all M$ product so much (make it PC or PPC), but in the end I HAVE TO USE THEM WHETHER I LIKE IT OR NOT.
Just for the sake of compatibility with so many other person I live and interact with everyday.
You gotta learn to face it mate, hence, the frustration. I knew the feeling.
Actually there are alternatives like palm and apple, but only few uses or supports them. Which will make, in the end, worse frustration.

Android

I'm sure it's a question of time 'till a standalone version comes out.
Cheers,

Android will be further down the road but it will be even later when we see a full-blown OS for the Tilt/Kaiser.
Once an Android OS is available though I will be flashing. I cannot stand WinMo either.
Curious but are you going to the iPhone instead?...I don't believe there are any other choices unless you're just going with a regular, non-smart/ppc phone.

Its going to be at least as long as it takes to release the first Android Phone to the general public, once thats done then the platform will open up more and be more accessible to us devs. I think Android is going to be amazing once its up and running properly on the MSM7200 chip set. But your best bet would be to hold on to your kaiser and put it in a drawer some place and buy another phone if you don't like the OS and the GUI that comes with it, if you can afford to do so. I am not a fan boy but if you don't need your phone as a business tool then the new 3G Iphone is the way to go in "MY" opinion (please do not turn this into an Apple VS Mac thread) Bottom line is HTC makes great business phones that they did a great job marketing as a general consumer "media" device which it is in some ways. But if your holding onto your kaiser in hopes of Android making everything perfect then your bubble needs to be burst..

There are many other phones out there beside the HTC and Iphones Nokia makes some amazing phones that would blow the kaiser and Iphone out of the water! Also the new Sprint "Instinct"(i think thats the name) is also a really cool touch screen based device! Soon everything phone is going to be touch screen only, the way that the general consumer thinks touch screens are so High tech and cool....
Apple sold 1 Million phones in 2 days so people must like something about it. Personally if they upgraded the camera and some other things I would be dropping my kaiser in a second for it but I'll wait for the 3rd generation its going to be sick! Last note and I'll stop! Windows Mobile 7 is going to be a radical change for the kaiser and other Windows Mobile based phones so It may be worth it to hold on to your kaiser until that is released

Thanks for the replies fellas. I have been a very happy Symbian S60 user for about 1.5 years now. I bought a Tilt a few months back because i love to tinker, and the Tilt is the Closest competition to the N95, so of course i had to get it. My first and last WM phone though.
My main phone is a Nokia N95-4, and i swap out every once in a while with an N82.
You hit the nail on the head when you say that this is a "i get emails all day, and need to open word documents while on lunch" persons phone. but for me, its so damn frustrating and boring, i want to rip out my eyes. Thing is, take all that away, and your left with a not very good phone.
I just hope there is interest in the Tilt still for someone to make an Android rom by the time it comes out.
All im going to say is that if it werent for XDA-DEV, i would have chucked it out of my window, because the factory HTC roms are for the birds.

Have to comment on this one!
well, first of all i'm not sure our Kaisers can handle WM7 when it comes out. I don't like the current OS we're using and wanna say that i had a chat with a couple of people here on the forums and decided not to get an iPhone (although i still like it) and hold on to my Kaiser and wait for Android. It will take time, though..
I wish i needed a second phone.

I'd love my Tilt even more if the screen was just a little bit better about where i touch it... I do IT for a small company and there are 3 iphones, a lot of junk phones and my Tilt... Tilt does the most, iPhone is the easiest to use.
If you could buy a better screen for the Tilt, I'd throw down an extra $200 on it.
Back to the topic, I'd also recommend saving it, with stuff like this you will never get what it is worth from anyone and if nothing else, you have a tinker toy.

If you dont like kaiser and can afford, u might as well sell it off now. Its nearly an year since its release and that is the approximate life of a handset ( in terms of specification) .Futher down the year htc pro will be released, with better specs and that handset will be better suited for wm7 or android. Both these OS may not work great in kaiser. ( but for me kaiser has been the best handset ever ( thanks to this forum and hang.tuah)

Well - obviously everyone sees something from a different perspective.
As a phone - the tilt is no better or worse than any other phone i have had. Remembering of course that cell signals have gotten better and more prevalent over time (I was an original Cellular One customer).
I do support for software so I need access to email on a pretty constant basis - I would have to get to the hotel immediately and check email - I would constantly have to have my laptop with me to check email to see if there were any problems brewing. I no longer have that "attchment" to the laptop. I have a freedom with this phone that I have never had before.
The fact that I can take it to the gym and listen to bluetooth headphones and get my music PLUS!
The fact that I can watch videos on the plane PLUS!
I can text and take and send pictures PLUS!
The fact that I no longer have to carry TOMTOM with me (the unit) when I am on the road and I ALWAYS have TOMTOM with me PLUS!
The fact that I can now whip out my phone and play a game when i am stuck for a few minutes and bored PLUS!
The fact that I can now find the local theater and see what is playing easily or the local Mexican restaurant PLUS!
The fact that I can get weather anywhere in the world easily PLUS!
The fact that I can get/add/change airline tickets easily PLUS!
The fact that I can add new programs to the phone easily PLUS!
So - from MY perspective - this is a drop dead incredible wonderful cannot do without it tool that makes my life better and more fun. It will only get replaced when there is something better available that does it truly better/faster/cheaper than my TILT.
From my vantage point,
Bill

Somehow, i really really doubt that... WM7 might use graphics a whole lot, and our phone doesnt have acceleration... We can just hope people can cook WM7 with drivers... Plus its still 6 months away, android is our best latest choice...

Have to ask, if you have the better nokia phones, why not just link a N810 tablet to your phone via bluetooth ? They aren't bad little devices. Except they run a version of linux. But there are apps that let you do alot of what you need a PPC/Laptop for.

So tempted to take my Kaiser back.

what can i say, last Saturday i walked out of my local O2 shop the proud owner of a Stellar (Kaiser). id had a Hermes for about a year, my Orange contract ended so i decided to upgrade my contract and phone. After playing around in the shop with a Stellar and an N95 8gb, i made my choice. Alongside the N95, the Stellar stood out and i didnt even think it was a tough choice. Home i strolled with my new toy, happy in the knowledge i had found a worthy replacement for my Hermes......well........
its now been 5 days, and all i can think about is the shop gave me 2 weeks to change the phone! the more is use the Kaiser, and the more i read online makes me want to exchange it! First off, with all that RAM and ROM it still seems less snappier than my trusty Hermes (and yes ive updated Kaiser to Schaps ROM 4.31). Strange. Next i run some of my trusty games: Quake, SCUMM, SNES and GBA emu's. these run worse than they did on my hermes, even worse than a really old xda 1 i used to have. Im getting worried by this point. So then i try watching some TV shows on it. Man, i know how video ran on my hermes, i even watched a good 10 mins of the spiderman 3 that came pre-loaded onto the N95 i tried in the shop so i know how video is MEANT to run. and its not like the piss poor Flickbook show my Stellar was providing me!!! So i start to research my new phone and find out the driver problems that this new phone suffers from. How can a company release this knowing full well the problems its gonna face?? Its a joke! Especially when people are paying serious money for them. I got mine for FREE and im still considering taking it back.
So here it is. Basically I have til the 16th to return it to the shop to get a new phone. Im seriously tempted by the N95 and dusting my hermes off rather than keeping the Stellar. the only thing stopping me is progress on the driver issues! i know with a set of drivers the Stellar will become my new fav toy, its the only thing holding the device back!
So what i want to know guys is, is it really gonna happen with HTC and these drivers, i see so many conflicting stories over this issue and am very confused! Are they really gonna uncripple our devices?? or just make us wait til they release their next overpriced, under resourced phone.
At present i feel im gonna wait til the 16th and if nothing official has been announced then im gonna take it back, trade it for a N95 and drag my hermes out of early retirement!!!
if it can do what you want it to do, and you're happy with it, then keep it.
if there's any possibility that you will be the least bit unhappy with it, take it back.
you've had the same time with both in the shop and you thought the kaiser stood out. what makes you think now that there aren't similar troubles with the nokia down the road?
To me, it sounds like you should hand the Kaiser back, stick with your Hermes for a while longer, and see what happens. Defaulting to the N95 doesn't really make sense - it obviously didn't impress you that much in the shop, and in many ways it's a very different device to any of the WM stuff you've used before, with an all new interface etc, no touchscreen, no keyboard, no compatibility with the software you're used to..
The Kaiser is a good device as it stands, but has the potential to be much more. If it doesn't meet your needs now, then hand it back and wait - something better might catch your eye, or the Kaiser itself might get the upgrades it needs.
I would not expect drivers in the near future, if ever. I already made this mistake and have long since gone past my return window. If you are having doubts, it is best to wait it out until something proven suits your needs.
Or... I'm not advertising or anything, but look for the other thread in this forum, the "another goodbye kaiser thread." Some people have just done what you are contemplating. I myself have gotten an E90 to replace. Would've gotten the N95(which my wife has) but I need a semi-PDA, at least.
thanks for your input, i kind of knew i would be taking it back. really not happy with it, seems slow and slugish compared to my hermes at almost every task! the reason im getting a n95 is cuz i need a new phone with the contract i took so im kin of picking it on default rather than merit. its free so what the hell! my stellar cost me £89 on top!!! im gonna use n95 as 2nd phone and continue using my trusty hermes as my main device!! thanks guys!!! im so gutted cuz i really want to love the Stellar!!!!! BLOODY HTC, THE DRIVER SHIRKING B&*%ARDS!!!
I'd personally prefer slow WM6 to a fast Symbian any day. I'm not going to get in the whole "everything's running perfectly fine on my Kaiser except for 3D games" thing, but the customization, interface and the amount of development that people do for WM is worth much more for me than playing Quake 3 on my PDA.
Just thought I'd advice you to really compare the OS and think about it better.. besides, it's always in around 5-7 days that "hype" is over and you start noticing problems.. every device known to human has problems or issues. Besides, on WM you usually have a fix/workaround to *most* of them.
Whatever you decision will be, good luck!
P.S: I personally *love* Nokia, and if they'd make PDAs on WM - I wouldn't buy anything else.
I have to say that the upside on Series 60 (your N95 option) is that what it does - it does quite well and is rock solid.
It isn't as customisable as the Kaiser, but with Windows Mobile's greater ability (necessity) to make bespoke, you get the downside of stability. The slowness you mention is puzzling...especially vs. the Hermes. Surely you have thrown in something like MemMaid and cleaned the RAM?!
I have never thought S60 to be very fast and a TyTnII should stomp it in speed. Very strange, I think.
BTW, I used Symbian PDAs and phones from the early 1990's until 2007.
there may be hope yet:
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/7085.html
The Kaiser is a phone, not a Playstation. Take it back, buy a Gaming platform, and find a phone that you can use to make calls with, not eat pellets or jump fire pits and whine about why your tiny guy didn't have enough RAM to fend of an evil attack.

Nokia E71

Hi Guys, I don't know too much about the difference in phones, I know I love the HTC Trinity but, my Network is offering me a Nokia E71 as an free upgrade, is it worth it?
I tried to read a little about the Nokia E71 and it sounds good so far however, am I gonna be as happy as I am with my HTC Trinity, is there anything I am gonna miss? I will always be a part of this forum regardless of which phone I use.
its a NICE phone. I think it looks a bit gaudy, but the keyboard's nice. And i've developed an intense hatred of wm, so any cahnge is nice.

Hi fzzyrn, thanks for replying. It interest me what you said about WM, do you think Symbian OS would be any better before it is cooked? Can you bake/cook Symbian ROM? Hmmmmmmmmmn, I am here doing some serious thinking.
no idea about the rom cooking, but it doesn't seem likely. You see, alot of higher end nokia users are businesspeople, and nokia is generally pretty good about software optimization.
i dont like that i have to install a whole bunch of software to get my phone the way that i want it when the e71 (or e61i in my case) already comes with pretty much everything that i use. Also, i've found touchscreen wm to be a bit difficult to use.
the question is, what do i use?
The answer- calender, alarm clock, phone, contacts (alot of them), sms, email.
i wont say the wm isn't "fun", but for the kind of stuff i do, its not particularly easy to use, and i get impatient waiting for the slide keyboard to change screen orientation.
What netowrk you on, if you haggle a bit, you might be able to get the Diamond if they offer it.
I used UIQ (so symbian, but not exactly S60) amd it was great. I had a P1i and it was touchscreen. It worked fine for what I wanted, but was a bit slow in opening things.
Overall, for calendar, contacts email, the small things symbian is ok, for word, excel, long periods internet browsing, stick with wm

LOL, I wanted to take it, the network sales rep made it seems like the best thing since slice bread. I will take it then, to be honest i wanted to wait a bit longer to see if they'll carry the Diamond. I don't think Three UK is gonna carry the diamond anytime soon.
From what I've heard, they are best suited for Symbian Operated Phones. My Trinity is actually from Orange (got it from my wife, she had issues with the touchscreen) but i unlocked it and now I am using it on 3 uk.
The TYTNII is the only wm phone they carry and I heard it isn't going too well on the network.
Oh well, I wanted a diamond but a E71 will work just fine I guess. I use my phone mostly for business (email, contacts, calendar task, notes, etc.) I don't use the MS Office application that much, all that could wait untill i get to the Office. I do surf the web a lot though especially when I am out on site. I really appreciate the feedback on the subject
yep. go ahead and get it.
send me your trinity if you want hinthint.
Send me the E71 if you don't like it, hinthint.
I have more posts than he does hinthint.
REAL subtle.
Bump...I have more posts than above!
touche, galaxys. touche.
yet i have more posts per day.
Sorry guys, sorry to disappoint you all but my wife wants to have a go at the Trinity again. Sorry!
I am going to Order the Nokia sometimes this week and see how it goes, at least if i don't like it I can send back if it is under 14 days. I'll keep you posted.

if you get it for free, of course, take it.
using it is a different story. i used nokia for several years (symbian 60 and 80) but since i am used to WM and the forum here, no chance for nokia anymore (only for my wife)
I have another thought guys. Check this out, I can now switch network and go with o2, get an iphone or stick with 3 and get a Nokia E71 or a TyTnII.
The Nokia 71 is new, iphone 3G is new and the TyTnII is old, been out since 2006 I think. The iphone I would have to pay some money for but that unlimited data plan and hotspot is a bit interesting to me. It is getting a bit complex for me now.
what do you use your phone for?
if you're heavily into business and calender, stick with the e71
if you're a "birkenstock wearing, clove-smoking vegetarian hippie" (not my words, 500xp if you can identify origin), get the iphone. Actually if you listen to music pretty heavily and you don't mind the software keyboard, get the iphone.
DON'T get the kaiser. What with the age, the video drivers (the mobile division of ati closed down, its that bad...) and the size, its not particularly worth it.

I've been hearing that phrase since college and to be honest, I never knew where it came from. I was busy googling the phrase and still haven't found its origin, i give up, you are gonna have to do me a favor and tell me.
its a term that the Princeton Review uses to describe the most politically liberal schools and institutions.
There may be another origin, but this is the one that i picked it up from.

It would have to be one of them Ivy Leaguers huh?
I've put a entire twist in this phone hunting thing. I just happen to Call a certain network about their phones and plans and guess what? When I got off the phone to them, there is a diamond on it's way to me, will get it Tuesday. 700minutes, unlimited text, free htc diamond all for £30 a month. Did I mess uip or did i get a deal.
I was looking forward to the Nokia E71 but, the screen too small, got used to a bigger screen. The keys are too small, I kept hitting a few of them at ones. Other than that it is a great phone. Someone told me not to use the touchflo on the diamond and I'll be ok. Is that true?

Letter to my Tilt

Dear Phone,
I feel privledged to know you... People call you many names like Kaiser, 8925, Tytn II, Vario III, and many others, but you will always be my Tilt. I remember when I first held you in my hand about 2 years ago.. You just "felt right" on my palm. You were very flashy and new... You had a QWERTY slide out keyboard that the buttons were big enough for my "man hands" (unlike your predicessor, my HP iPaq). But at the same time, with your keyboard sled in, you fit so nicely in my pocket.. (Screen facing into my thigh of course to protect your screen)
I remember our first vacation together to Florida from Wisconsin, where you told me right where to go using TomTom... Every turn, and you even managed to work where I had no cellular signal in the Mountians.. And I did not even need to buy you an external GPS "puck".. You did it all yourself without any outside help. When I was low on gasoline, you knew right where I needed to drive to.. When we stopped at motels that had free Wifi, you helped me check and reply to emails, and even IM people on yahoo and aim.. Then when we finally got to Florida, you were the first thing in my hand to call everyone to tell them the great news... You were there at Disney world to snap a quick picture of the family and the fun we had there... and even told me what the weather had in stock for me each day..
When I was at work you were with me... If I had to kill some time, or were just bored, we could play Ka-Glom or Call of Duty to pass the time.. And don't forget the time we played with your emulators.. There was more than once while waiting for appointments in offices and such that there was a crowd that formed aroudn us while we played Super Mario Bros 3 or some SNES game at full speed... You would never let me get bored.
If I needed some information, you surfed the internet like no other before.. I could choose whatever browser I was in the mood for, Skyfire, IE, and others... People would have their iPhones and such, but they had nothing on you... You has a 16gb storage card so you could keep up.. But your internal browser was compatible with orb so I could also access ANY of my 300 additional GB of movies, TV shows, music, and whatever else I had on my home computer... We used to love to play the game "Anything your phone can do, mine can do better". And when I just wanted to sit back and watch a movie, you screen would tilt up to the perfect angle for me to set down you down on the table and watch... And with my stereo bluetooth Motorola S9 earphones you came through loud and clear over distracting background noises!
There were rough times too... I flirted more than once with another... We can not forget when I set you aside and was seen out another.,.. But I always came home to you and learned my lesson... My son even fell in love with you and had to go otu and get one just like you as well... You may have aged some over time.. the shiney metallic layer on some of your front buttons may have flaked off... You may not be the newest and latest that is out there... But I know you are the best... You are the one that has stuck by me for these few years, and I hope many more. I know others have long since abandoned you for a Fuze or whatever the current flavor of the month is, but I will be with you until the end..... Or until I can afford a Touch Pro 2 (just kidding, sort of)... Thank you Tilt for all your hard work... I would not be the same without you..
You proud owner,
Todd in Wisconsin USA
This is so heart touching that I must say goodbye to my trusty 8525 and also follow the call of the Tilt. I want to feel this experience too.I need the GPS security and the friendship on the open road of Mr. T or Ozzy's voice leading me along the way. I must have the Tilt.
I think you will be happy with it.. and now with Tilts being "old" their prices are very affordable for most people.. But personally I prefer "C3PO" as my trusted voice on the road... He sounds rather refined and always calls me "Master".. But seriously.. For me, the Tilt is the best phone ever.. Since getting a tilt I have gotten : a HTC Touch Cruise, a LG Incite, and one or 2 others.. I always came back to the Tilt within a week or so... Sure, there is no g-sensor or FM radio.. but the g-sensor is cool, but nothing that is really that functional.. and with unlimited internet, you can stream most radio stations (even XM/Sirius stations if you have a subscription).. And the tilting screen.. Most people, even other Tilt users wil say it is sort of cool, but not that useful... But wait until you get used to it (assuming you take advantage of watching video on it)... hacong one that just lays flat on the screen will not be acceptable after that... I truely beleive it is the best phone ever...
ever since i got mine from a second hand store i have fallen in love with it. It is hands down the best phone I have ever used. I only paid 200 for it and once I learned how to put new roms on it my phone had a life that I had not know before. Battery life is the only issue I really have with this phone and even that I am willing to put up with just beause I love this phone that much. I recommend anyone who is serious about their phone get one of these it has made my experience the best I've ever had.

try an iPhone and you will **** your pants.
See, for me, the Kaiser was an enormous disappointment. It's an ever-so-slightly better phone (you know, making phone calls) than my Apache, but everything else about it was worse. The hype machine said Kaiser would solve all my problems, but in the end, it was pretty much the same, but slower (damn, you, AT&T).
Now that my Kaiser's given out on me (I'm running on a loaner Kaiser ATM), I'm VERY EAGERLY anticipating my Touch Pro 2 coming to replace it when AT&T finally gets their act together.

The iphone is fast but it lacks customization, and the UI isn't as informational, functional or productive as windows mobile 6.5. I don't want icons with side scrolling pages... but large text scrolling down..and being able to customize the UI within the OS. Windows might be lacking in speed and in feel but I think they got down the hard part down 1st in the mobile phone/device..once they mimic iphones speed and overall feel..its pretty much done for apple.

Wow... How did my love letter to my tilt become an iphone topic? *cough TRAITORS cough*
The original reason for this thread was to see if anyone else would share their fond memories of their Kaiser.... So, anyone want to share?
Dancing with the devil
My friends,
I have to say when I saw this topic I too thought things in Wisconsin must be direly dull. But I have to say, The Tilt was a revelation for me. For the past two years, I have used and loved my Tilt. I have enjoyed trying multiple renditions of WM6.X and have enjoyed bricking my phone on more than one occasion. But trouble's a-brewing. I got a new Itouch for my birthday and have to say I am enchanted with all that it can do. Now when you add in the thought of being able to make phone calls out of the same device; well, I'm strapping on a pair of Depends in preperation of ****ting my pants.
Though you all may deny it, I know that you have all gone to an AT&T store and played extensively with an Iphone. I have too. And now that I near the end of my contractual agreement with AT&T, I find that I am duly ready to <I>UPGRADE</I> to an Iphone. I know that some people fell out of there rolling-chair when I said upgrade, but the intuitive-ness of the device is undeniable. It knows me as only a lover could. Will I miss the WM world? Absolutely. But I have to beleive that there are wonderful forums for the Iphone just as there has been for the Kaiser and the Hermes and the Raphael.
So watch out clean pair of underoos, i am preparing for a true colon-blow! Soon I will have an Iphone and will retire my Tilt to the top shelf of my tech-storage closet; never to see the light of day again.
Good-bye my friend.
you are da man bro
you da man bro. my Tilt was broken for 2 months..hadda cracked screen..i gotta replacement screen from Hong Kong for $25 and replaced it myself and now we are back in action. reading your post brought back sweet memories of my Tilt and I...i can't wait to see where I take this baby next. I live in Milwaukee and this tiny city just wasn't the same without my Tilt.
good man.

You mean "dumbed-down" like iPhone
Regarding the previous post of yours:
Did you **** in your pants because you couldn't copy'and'paste, didn't have 3G, didn't have MMS, the only "software" you can use on your iPhone are webkit applets for the browser, and so on?
(I know it got 3G and finally cut'n'paste this year, but that's about all that has changed since I "****ted in my pants" when I discovered how stupid I was to waste my money on such castrated dumbphone )

Windows 7 update?

Would it be possible to update Imagio to WinMo 7 when it is available?
Thanks,
Mark
No. If I read right the min requirements for 7 Series is a Snapdragon. That's a 1GHz CPU, the Imagio only has a +500MHz CPU. I'm sure once we get an HSPL someone will be more then happy to cook a rom. But It will run like crap, if at all.
no update even the hd2 will not get it
no 6.5 hardware is capable of running 7.
Thanks for all the clarifications. Appreciate that!

LOL The HD2 will get it. That's like the only phone that will.
What really gets my panties in a bunch.... wait... did I just type that out loud? ... is I was assured at the time of purchasing the Imagio that it would most definitely have winmo7 available for it when it was released. It was repeated over and over that winmo6.5 was simply an interim solution until 7 was released. It was THE determining factor for purchasing the Imagio and signing a 2 year contract. As for Microsoft... I'm through with buying any phone containing windows mobile OR phone... Winmo6.5 is the Windows Vista of the PDA.... a complete POS considering it was released to compete against the iphone and the droid.
Thanks, and don't let the door hit you on the way out.
Man I don't even care about WinMo 7 anymore lol.
Not a fan of the interface.
Do want 6.5.3 though.
I'm looking forward to WinMo7. I just hope that we can get this unlock bull**** taken care of before it comes out - which I'm sure won't be for quite a while yet if I know Microsoft! Yeah, I know that they're saying it'll be out soon, but I seriously doubt it. On the other hand, I love this Imagio so much that I'm not really missing the hard unlock. So, lots to see about....

weeelllll.. now hang on a sec. i dont think it was ever designed to be a competitor of iphone, per sey. that said, i think that *every* smartphone/ppc is positioned to compete w/the iphone. as for it not being able to run winmo 7, who cares?? just get another phone once it comes out..u do realize that it's going to be some time before it does finally make it to the hallowed shelves of verizon - i don't care *what* they say. w/verizon and microsoft it's always 'i'll believe it when i see it'. as for droid, haven't seen it yet but am planning to make it into a verizon store this weekend - very much doubt it but that's the plan as of this second!! so stick around m8.. u may be pleasantly surprised..

Why would you ever believe a saleperson from any cell provider? Specially on Minmo7. Odds are heavily in favor of you knowing way more than they do, even if you know nothing about nothing.
Most of the dudes that work in the VZW stores are lucky to remember their names.
I did read on a MS blog that WM7 would not be available for the phones that preceded the WM7 phone.
7 wont be on 6.5 phones. no matter what, it isnt happening.
its PHYSICALLY not possible.
hope for 6.5.whatever and be thankful if you get it.

Man! I'm self employed and still don't have the disposable income that a fair amount of people have in these forums. In the current state of the economy who can afford to purchase phones every time a new one comes out? I sure can't.
Regarding Win 6.5.... loaded the most recent update to it and it's made a ton of difference regarding the use of the phone, speed, and the constant lockups I was experiencing prior. At this stage I have settled into the Imagio and have loaded a ton of apps that make it much more convenient in just about every aspect of my day. Figure since Win7 will never be available I'll take the plunge soon and load one of the new roms on it. Also curious to try out the droid OS now available.
Still... while there was a great deal of initial enthusiasm regarding the Imagio... it looks like that enthusiasm has died off really quick which would seem to translate to less being done to continue to enhance the product on all fronts... including here.
Time will tell.

Yeah, I hear you. It does get quite expensive. But think of it as a hobby.. That might help justify its cost. Or, stick w/what you have and love it. All these phones have serious sweetness creds. Before I bought the Imagio, I was using a 3 year old Touch. It suited my purposes fine and I bought the Imagio only bc my Touch was all scratched and generally messed up.

well good thing that you doubt it. I tried out the kin two with win mo 7 and i have to say.. it is a huuge adjustment. One thing that bothered me the most... there is no apps for the phone. yea u heard me
I have purchased windows based smartphones since it was the ONLY player in the market with Windows CE 1.0. I have probably purchased 12 to 15 different variations of a windows based smartphone over the last 10 years. I have developed apps left and right for win ce and winmo. The fact that Microsoft has created immediate obsolescence on every winmo 6.5 phone by not allowing forward migration is the final straw for me. Particularly with an OS that effectively will have NO support when it's released for 3rd party apps. I really believe microsoft has lost what ever clout and status they had in the pda market for good. I will NEVER purchase another MS based smartphone again. Bill Gates can sit on them and spin. In the end I have to say that the Imagio, while giving the promise of longevity, expandibility, and all around blissfulness, has turned out to be the worst, bar none, pda purchase I have ever made. And I am still stuck with 14 months left on this *&*^*) assed 2 year verizon contract on it.
Purchased my first Droid the other day. The Droid X. MAN what a beautiful pda! This thing does mega circles around my Imagio and winmo. With the 60,000 plus apps available for it... my ability to build apps around it as well... and the shear elegance of the unit... this may very well be the last pda I ever purchase.
As the Imagio fades into "paper weight" status... Homer Dokes rides off into the sunset with his Droid X at his side.... tomorrow will be a good day!
Wow
You must of had some Really Great phones before the Imagio if that is your worst one ever! What were they?!!! I want to get one!

[Q] I'm torn, should I or should I not upgrade...

I have done all my research on the new HD7. I currently have the HD2 and love what WM7 lacks right now. Such as cut and paste and tethering. I use those all the time! But, I HATE my HD2. It freezes like crazy, always lagging, I have to soft reset 1-2 times a day. So I"m ready to upgrade to WM7. I've owned an Android before, g1, and loved it, but I like WM a bit more. I started to look at the MyTouch4g, but I keep getting pulled ot the HD7. So my dilema ow is, should I upgrade to the HD7 from my HD2. Is the current WinMo7 worth it? Has anyone has a change to play around with the new system. I've read so many good, and some "ok" and many just an HD2 with a new outfit.
I also know it's a personal choice by far. But what are YOUR opinions. What do you like/dislike compared to others.
I have to say I'm loving mine and think it's a good thing (in a funny way) that there are features missing. We get to look forward to updates to a system that has really great foundations.
Having said that there is a bit of a danger in thinking that every missing feature and every imaginable improvement will make it into imminent updates. MS are in this for the long haul and some improvements won't materialise over the lifetime of the initial batch of phones.
Copy/paste will be coming soon but we just don't know other features. We can just hope. So, if you can't live without tethering it might be worth waiting until early next year to see if news emerges on a timescale.

I still have my i637 jack. I suggest you wait like me, We got to atleast see if Microsoft is gonna even mention addressing the other issues besides the ones they say they will fix in early 2011. Although im personally seeing are they gonna stay true to their words by listening to their supporters.

You have 14 days with T-Mobile to return the phone and get a new one or reverse your upgrade if you choose to. You pretty much have nothing to lose. Rather than asking everyone else what they think, the best thing to do is always to just get the phone yourself, try it out and see if you like it.
That being said, the HD2 ran an unfortunately unfriendly and antiquated operating system that was not designed for nor optimized for the HD2. Even HTC's Sense could not save it. Sad because its still a top-notch phone hardware wise. Which is why Windows Phone 7 was built from the ground up and optimized for hardware matching the HD2 and beyond. If you've seen any videos online, you should notice how dramatically smoother and seamless the whole experience is.
When people talk about about how the HD7 is just an HD2 in a new outfit, that is totally correct. It is the HD2 essentially, hardware wise. But the outfit is just as important as the hardware, and Windows Phone 7 is not Windows Mobile 6.5, not by a long shot.
Try out the phone, if it turns out that its not for you, then please take advantage of the return policy and try out a different phone. That's the only way you'll really get a real opinion.
I will be jumping ship on November 8 over to the HD7 and T-Mobile. The Evo, as awesome a hardware as it is, simply does not have the 'outfit' to match it. Windows Phone 7 provides the polish, features, and speed that I need, and I can't wait.
I'm going to get the HD7 on Nov 8th as well. I've used Android since the G1 and ave had just about every Android phone T-Mo offers (except the Behold 2). Right now I have the myTouch 4G, and while it is an awesome phone, it's not doing it for me. I really like how WP7 looks. I also have a Zune HD, and I like the software on it, and WP7 is very similar.
If you are prepared to wait for the new OS to mature and for "jailbreaks and hacks" to become available then go for it. If you want to be abe to tweak from day 1 and have every possible feature that is out there then stay with 6.5 or go for android. I have a horrible feeling these forums are going to fill up with people moaning about lack of this that or the other feature. I myself like the interface so much that I want to be part of the WP7 thing from day 1 hence I have my HD7 already and am lovin it warts an all!!

Kind of what he said. Buy it and see. I'm getting it because I want to be part of the new revolution of Winmo. And honestly, have found myself not to concerned about what it's lacking as hell, it still the basic things you expect in a smartphone and I'm willing to give up some the apps I've used on Winmo and Android ports to the HD2. Most of them are just because I wanted to do something and not really needed. But with a browser, slingplayer coming soon, office, phone calls, text, and Slacker for streaming radio. That pretty much rounds up the stuff that I use on a regular basis (oh just need a golfgps app) and that's it. But, I'm planning on keeping my HD2, juuust in case there is something I need. My advice, jump into and see what you think and try not to think about the very minor things you'll be missing. You might actually find that you start finding more time for real life as opposed to your virtual phone life that's wasted from having billions of apps to check. I know I will and I'm looking forward to it!
That's everyone for your opinions. I am usually one to get the new "it" thing as soon as it comes out, usually the day it comes out (well only phones) But not so much when a new phone comes out, just the next biggest thing. In this case, WinMo7. I've owned 3 Win Mo phones (SDA, Dash and HD2) Android (G1) and iPhone along with all the other basics before the SDA, and I can surely say, I like WinMo the best. I do like to completely customize my phones. I found WinMo to have the best broad range to do this. I'm not one to load my phone with apps, except to customize, which is why I don't mind the almost nothing there marketplace for WinMo.
I will probably be one of the ones jumping on the bandwagon and getting the HD7 on Monday as well. I do like their return policy, but don't like their $10-$20 restocking fee that you have if you return it. I'm sure I will end up liking the HD7. For the most part I have a love/hate relationship with my HD2. I think what I hate is WinMo6.5 because after customizing it was perfect for me. I'm sure over time the developers here will come up with ways to customize the HD7. I think I can wait. Plus, I would get the "new phone" feeling with HD7, vs getting an android which seems to never change it's basics.
Also, how is everyone getting their phones?
I'm thinking about getting it at WalMart since their price is $150 with a new 2 yr contract, (have to verify if an upgrade counts)
T-Mobile's is $250 with a 2 yr contract with a $50 mail in rebate (which I always seem to forget to mail out on time!)
Do Not Buy A W7 phone
I have had an HTC HD 2 phone from when they came out and a week ago bought an HTC HD7 WHAT A MISTAKE I have put it in the bin. Any one that says it is better than (shudder to think an iphone) is not in the real world,
No File transfer using Pc You have to use Skydrive long winded.
very basic functions and its display looks s***t
Best advice is go into a phone shop and have a play but be aware that what you see is all you get!.
I am 52 years old and have been involved and used computers from being about 25, and have found windows has always been the best platform and have hated Apple for there lack of user input it has always been thats what you get like it or lump it, but I will certanly be buying an apple or android in the next 2 weeks.
So microsoft stuff it!

You write and complain like a child. So I am going out on limb and say that you are not 52 years old and you haven't handled one yet. Since the screen resolution is exactly the same as HD2 and from what I have read it has the S-LCD so its even better. You are the first that I have seen to complain about the screen especially since you are an HD2 user. I guess you have the special HD2 screen no one else has.
I also doubt if you have been in and around computer for 25 years. Your complaint about Apple leads me to believe you are not being honest. Are you complaining about your HD2? You fail to mention that. You don't like Apple and believe that MS is the best platform yet you are moving away from WM6.5 and WP7 and getting an IPHONE or ANDROID?
So in conclusion you tried out an HD7(alleged) and thought the SAME EXACT SCREEN AS YOUR HD2 was crap? The WP7 OS and the Screen was so horrible that you went into a trance like state fueled by your anger towards MS that you decided to tell MS to stuff the SOLE PLATFORM you have been using for the past 25 years? Then you just tucked it away into a BIN instead of returning the phone because you could no longer stand to touch or have it in your sight.
Ahh that makes SENSE!
Please tell us more...
