Hello,
i have a data option at vodafone germany with 200 MB Traffic inclusive. But there is a problem: Vodafone counts the traffic in 100kb Parts and terminates the connection if there is no data transfer for some minutes (mostly about 8 minutes)
I use the exchage Email push and there is no constand data traffic. Only when an email arrives or when the exchange sends a timeout.
So Vodafone terminates the internet connection, active sync recognized it and starts the connection again. That would be no real problem, but every connection is a new 100kb part.
So i've got about 30MB Traffic after 2 days only for reconnecting. That is not really good for my inclusive traffic.
So i need a tool like an automatic ping. A program, which sends every x minutes a ping so that there is a minimal traffic and vodafone keeps the connection alive.
Is there such a tool? It could also be a tool, which looks for updates every 5 minutes The program only have to do a little traffic.
Because the connection is termindated by vodafone, no kaiser reg tweak is working.
I hope you can help me.
Thank you in advance

It's well known that Windows Mobile cuts off the connection after some minutes. But I've never heared that a provider cuts off the connection after some minutes without data. Are you really sure about that? A good provider wouldn't do that... ;-)
I've already had a similar problem with my old S200. It disconnected after some hours. But that wasn't a problem with the provider. It was a problem with the ROM update.
Nevertheless at that time I've also searched for a ping tool. I wrote a little Mort-Script (with logging feature) and executed it with SkSchema every hour. Since you are needing smaller intervals this could be a problem. It is a little bit hard to use SkSchema for small intervals. Here is the script:
Code:
If( InternetConnected("http://www.google.de/") )
Chk = "OK"
Else
Chk = "Off"
EndIf
FmDate = FormatTime( "Y-m-d" )
FmTime = FormatTime( "H:i:s" )
FmName = FormatTime( "ymd" )
LogText = FmDate & ", " & FmTime & ", " & Chk & ", time^NL^"
LogFile = "\My Documents\MortScript\Conn\Conn_" & FmName & ".log"
WriteFile( LogFile, LogText, 1 )
Exit
Another solution could be this tool:
http://www.wizcode.com/products/view/gprs_keep_alive
or, use vxUtil. see the Wiki for my related mass Ping tutorial
So, up again.
Is there no real solution for my problem?
No little simple program?

Thank you, nice program, but i have a problem: When the TyTn II is in standby mode (after pushing the power button once) the programs stops sending pings. When i turn on the tytn again, the ping sending continuous.
Is it possible to send also pings when the device is in standby?
Special2k3
Have you already tried the program I've mentioned in the post #2?
http://www.wizcode.com/products/view/gprs_keep_alive
Exact the program i was thinking about. But i have the same problem: The program works great if the kaiser is on. But when it is in standby mode (about 80 % of the day) the program stops to work as long as the kaiser is in standby.
Is there a way to define if a program should stop at standby or not? I mean the HTC Music Player also works in standby mode.
Thank you

Eheh, I didn't want to believe to it, but it seems to work
Install this small freeware and run it BEFORE you launch any GPS program: it downloads approximately 35 kbytes on your ppc and it allows you to have a rapid fix (a warm fix even if it should be a cold one).
Try it and write about your experience.
Ciao
I add some explanations on the program.
QGPS: improve your TTFF to seconds!
If you have a PPC with built-in GPS - this software is for you.
This is a small freeware that downloads Ephemeris data to your PPC using an internet connection with Activesync. If your GPS was off for more than 4 hours, then the next time you start it up you get a cold start , where the Ephemeris data needs to be DL to the receiver. This can take a few seconds to a few minutes, depending on your device and location.
The software downloads this data to your PPC so that you , in fact , get a warm start!
Just start the program, click the Connect button (no need for the 10 days data), and within a few seconds , you get the most up-to-date data. Now go outside and start your GPS program - you'll get a fix within 10 seconds!
sorry ... no fix after 30 secs
here after 67 sec.

OH Yesss. Very cool! This worked for me. I did a soft reset which usually means the GPS takes 1 minute or more under the most ideal conditions, much longer if you are moving or around buildings. After downloading the data with this app, it locked about 10 seconds after the GPS was recognized by the system. However it failed to initiate a connection automatically, I had to manually connect to IE to get a connection, then it downloaded the data every time.
THANKS!
Tried with an HP Travel Companion iPAQ rx5935 of a colleague here at work and it works fine too.
And as Matterhorn said: It failed to initiate a connection, I have to start IE first... then download the data.
Thanks a lot.
97 secs to have a fix , i am a quiet disappointed
i use the last radio

I did not compute exactly the time needed for the HP. It was something around 1min too. But without this soft... we was around 5 min.
Also... It highly depends on the area where you are (discovered area… buildings...)

Yes, this was stolen from http://www.avaricum.net/ and it only works on the Globallocate GPS chip of the HP hw6515/6915, it will have zero impact on the Qualcomm chip of the P3600 or of a SiRFstarIII based unit. This thread should be locked before more people waste their time with it.

Actually, I think "stolen" might be the wrong word, it looks to be an open download to me.
Normally it takes about 5 minutes or longer in front of my window to get a fix, no I got a fix in less than 1 minute, thanks man thats great!
It works great for me. Way faster than before. Thanks
Subject says it all.
AS works (usually) for a while after reset, but then it just hangs saying "Synchronising" but gets nowhere.
Sometimes killing and restarting AS works, but usually I have to reset the damn thing.
Anyone else having this problem/found a solution? Not sure I'll get any sense from Orange (in fact, I am sure I'll get sod-all sense from them!)
Ferg.
P.S. Got HTC Home, iMate WMP Today, Live Search, Voice Command and many other apps installed. Perhaps it doesn't like Home or so.
More likely its a connection thing.
Try disabling advanced functionality in Start, settings, connections, USB-to-PC
That will make it try a USB connection instead of an IP based one.
Sorry, I should have said I was referring to AS on the device itself - it's Direct Push that's mucked up.
I meant on the device... but that was based on AS with pc
However, if you have an exchange server in the mix, then I would guess it either is losing the connection to the server. What happens if you leave it until it errors? (ie what error code)
Can you sync with the server OK when you do connect with USB to an internet enabled pc?
Well, the funny thing is it doesn't give me an error (or I've not waited the hours required for it to time-out).
The TyTN I have works a lot better under the same circumstances (same Exch, same account, sam SIM card etc, so it would deffo point towards the TyTN II itself.
The only thing left to do, I supose, is to ramp up the Exch logging and see what that says, but I wouldn't hold out too much hope of that.
Thanks for your assistance, unwired.
F.
Ok so its definitely the device...
Do you have signal issues on 3g where you are? Is your network allowing simultaneous voice and data? Have you installed the server certificate OK on your device?
Yeah, all the Exchange stuff is configured correctly - that's my job after all.
No 3G issues (since I use the TyTN from the same place.
Although I did notice recently that I can't actually have adata connection and a call at the same time (with 3G coverage). I guess I should be able to...
F.
sorry to bring up an old post,
having same sort of problem, but only when trying to get attachments. seems to take forever, (5-10 mins stuck on syncing then looks like it gives up) but the attachment is then there, which is crazy as its a 30k word doc which should take seconds.
did you work out any kind of solution?
edit: this is on a clients kaiser
GPS Starts(light orange intermittent every 6 / 8 seconds) with the launch of the program (Tom Tom), But not engage any satellite after a wait of 30 minutes (very good position for signal receipt).
The program will end (Tom Tom), but remains active GPS (light orange intermittent every 6 / 8 seconds ) and the system becomes extremely slow, almost blocked, I have to turn off the device and run it again.
I tried also Quick-GPS but not download anything (Tests done with: WI-FI, GPRS/UMTS e ActiveSync)!
What can I do? Suggestions?
…… I perform a Hard Reset?
Thanks
Francesco
P.S.
GPS has never worked!

Francesco, when you say you should have a good signal, you mean you have a clear view of the sky? Not from a window or something of the sort, but like having no roof on top, nothing blocking the sky?
Thanks for the answer!
Yes, of course, in an open and where the signal is good for other GPS(PG NAV - Honlux + Nokia 6680 - Garmin).
It is normal that closing the program that operates the GPS (Tom Tom, Test GPS), GPS remains open and the whole system slows down a lot?
In your opinion, I agree to a Hard Reset? Groped or other evidence?
Thanks
Francesco
Good Afternoon !
Someone knows me suggestions……?
In technical assistance?
O Make other efforts? ... And what?
Hard Reset ?
Thanks
Francesco
Hi Frank, this may seem like a stupid question, but did you buy your Tytn II from Egypt? I believe GPS is illiegal in certain countries, so HTC have an agreement whereby they simply disable it. If this is the case, unfortunately i don't think there's a way round it
Thanks for the answer!
All Italian:
Purchase; Shop; Guarantee.
However there is GPS. It is activated but is not receiving signal. A closure application does not stop. Rallenat much the system.
Thanks
Francesco
I would take it back to the shop. The GPS should work without much effort. When a prog closes, the GPS should turn off so something is wrong. You could try a hard reset, then if it still does not work, return it for a new one.
good luck!
Just a few questions and maybe some suggestions...
Have you tried to adjust some of the external GPS settings? There are quite a few reports that this can mess up your GPS receiver and needs a hard reset to get it working again.
You say that the GPS program doesn't close when you hit the 'X' button. Some ROMS have the option to minimise instead of close a program - maybe this is what is happening. Normally when back at the main screen there will be 3 horizontal parallel lines with a small arrow in the top right of the screen - if you touch these it will bring up a list of running programs which can be individually closed - or go to Start/Settings/System/Memory/Running Programs - the program can be closed from here too. I know that VisualGPSCE will run in the background unless closed correctly.
Personally, if you are getting to the point of suspecting a hardware problem (as per RemE's post) I'd try a hard reset first. I flash a LOT of roms (similar effect to a hard reset) and follow the following routine (in this order) each time which works for me:
1. Back up all my data, emails, sms's to my PC.
2. Make sure I have all the re-install cabs ready.
3. Flash new rom (or in your case do a hard reset).
4. Wait until rom is loaded - don't configure anything yet - and hard reset again (this is reported to make the rom run faster).
5. NEVER TOUCH EXTERNAL GPS SETTINGS.
6. Configure all things built-in to the rom (like timezone, language settings, notifications etc) BEFORE connecting to the pc.
7. Connect to pc and re-sync all my outlook data.
8. Switch off kaiser then switch on again using power button (not soft reset) - this forces any registry changes to be written to registry before the reset is performed.
9. Run quickGPS.
10. I always install and set-up my GPS programs next: GpsTEST, Visual GPSCE and TomTom (files and link attached).
Now to set-up GPS.
11. Make sure phone is well charged.
12. Go somewhere outside with a good view of the sky, no buildings etc - preferably no clouds.
13. Run QuickGPS again if this was first run more than a couple of hours ago.
14. Start GpsTEST. This will scan your phone and automatically set up the program for the correct com port and baud rate.
14. Leave GpsTEST running, put the phone down and drink a cup of tea or two, read a book etc - keep checking the phone every 10 minutes or so. I normally get a fix within a few minutes but sometimes 30 or 60 if sight of sattellites is not too good.
15. When GpsTEST shows as running (you'll have a number in the HDOP box and green vertical bars) the GPS is now working fine.
16. Now I start my tomtom and usually find sattellites within seconds.
17. I then ALWAYS run GpsTEST or VisualGPSCE before starting my navigation program (tomtom) because it gets a fix much quicker.
Hope this helps.

Everyone:
First of all thank you very much for your support and help!
I am KAISER from 2 months (period of a lot of work) and I had not yet used the GPS (in the Christmas holidays).
Probably some friend of mine has pressed some key or external GPS .....
Point out that everything worked well (data connection with Proxy and not Proxy: GPRS, UMTS, HSDPA and WI-fI; Outlook - Server exchange and POP; Internet Explorer; Skype; MSN; VoipBuster; Fring; Phone Pad International; Sprite Backup; BT Audio Toggle; all Documents; etc. etc.) except GPS!
Another clarification ...
Setup of the task manager is one touch = minimize; touch long = closes.
When I close a program, verify that it is really closed through task manager.
At this point, try to scrupulously follow your suggestions and I will make you know.
With your permission, if I need you still disturbing.
Thank you very much,
Francesco.
All OK!
Work everything perfectly.
Thanks very much to everyone, in particular ACH2 with very detailed explanations.
Excellent procedure for Hard Rest and Recovery.
Thanks!
Francesco
you don´t need do a hard-reset
put this settings on external gps:
programs > gps program port: 4
hardware > gps hardware port: (none)
baud rate: 4800
access > manage gps automaticaly (recommended) :enable
press ok on left top corner
do a soft-reset
... and now you have gps work again
regards
hi!
i'm a newbie @ this forum, so i hope that these questions are ok to ask & my english isn't the worst..
i'm from germany and i got the touch diamond from vodafone in germany..
now i've got 3 problems..
1. if i want to sync emails with my gmx account (pop3) i got a message, that i'm not able to sync it.. "synchronisation problem" maybe it's because the proxy doesn't allow that? i got a imap email account from vodafone too, and there are no problems.. is somebody there who has the same provider or problem?
2. i got qip for the diamond and i can't get a connection to the icq network. "connection timeout" or something like that is the message i get. i tested a lot of icq clients, and i use not the newest version of qip because in this version i'm able to set the proxy, where i set the settings like my connection settings from the windows mobile device.. i've heard, that some vodafone users get this started with my version & my settings, so maybe its somebody here who get this started too.
i think 1 & 2 are the same problem, there must be a mistake in the connection settings.. maybe there is no solution, i searched @ the whole web for weeks & nothing is usefull.. it's strange that i can use the vodafone live portal & google and everything else on port 80..
now there is still the problem 3, its the most important for me..
3. if i go to the standby-mode (the small button on the top of the phone^^) and it's in standby for a while, the damn wlan connection is turning on!!! its really bad, because the battery is empty after a short while. is there a way to disable the automatic wlan connection? after that i always have to go to >settings>connection manger and have to disable wlan.. i installed the advanced settings (i think i got it from here) and enabled a lot of power management settings, and if wlan doesn't turn on, my battery works for 1,5 days (if i doesn't access the internet and play with the phone).. this is a really bad disadvantage @ the phone.. if wlan is turning on the battery is empty after a few hours..
by the way, has somebody a tip for me to get the phone turned on for longer? and whats the record running time? xD
thank you before & i have to say...
.. this forum is the best for windows mobile devices!!! i got a lot of software from here
it's really impressive
I just created my live emailaccount on the email tab in one of the latest Energy roms and when you choose to check your email automatically every 30min for example, the data connection stays on, which uses a lot of battery offcourse. I think this is probably with all roms.
Isn't there any trick or tool, when the emailprogram in the hometab checks for emails that it disconnects automatically after the emails have been transfered to your phone ? This would save a lot of battery, I searched for an option but didn't find anything.
Thanks!
You can try "Manila Dial-up Enabler/Disabler"

Hi
If you're not squeamish with registry editing, look here
HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings\
Change CacheTime to 60
In SuspendResume replace ~GPRS! with GPRS_bye_if_device_off
Then soft reset
your device will disconnect teh data connection after 60s of idle time
