iGo on XDA Stellar? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hi, I've searched but can't seem to find a definitive answer.
Will iGo work on the XDA Stellar without re-flashing the ROM? I've read somewhere about O2 not allowing the use of certain GPS programs.
Can anyone confirm that they have iGo working?
Many thanks, Mat.

I had iGo on the tilt and it worked, not sure what the Stellar model is.

The Stellar is an HTC Kaiser, but I've heard of O2 trying to prevent the installation of other GPS programs than the one they are selling...
Many thanks.

O2 punt CoPilot with the XDA's but i know TomTom absolutely works on the Steller so i'd imagine you can run pretty much any GPS app.

i-Go works Great on the TytnII and Tilt. I have them both and run i-Go everyday. I just wish i-Go would say what side of the street your destination is on.

works on my tilt, but kind of laggish with the pointer following where i'm at

What GPS software package are you guys thinking of using?

Well, I am all prepared to buy the Kaiser when it hits the market. I am already looking at the GPS software packages out there for my Kaiser (hopefully GPS is not locked to Telenav). Even if it is locked, I am pretty sure all the good cooks out here will modify the ROM to fix this. What are you all thinking about using?
I've been using Route 66 on my Wizard and it works quite well. DeLorme Pocket Street Atlas is OK but the maps and routing aren't as good.
Lots of people swear by TomTom, and a few reviewers/testers have used it on their pre-production Kaisers. Both semsons.com & buygpsnow.com have a wide selection of GPS software packages.
I use tomtom and find it great.
i think ill also use tomtom. which one is the best?
ive never owned a gps device, so that's the only software ive really heard of..
I've been using OCN6 with my Wizard. . . anxious to see if it works with the Kaiser/8925/Tilt.
Route66 for me. I want my traffic information without having to pay a subscription...
Only thing that could be improved is the frequency of the map updates, where TomTom is the clear winner, but I've had no problems with my R66 map accuracy so far.
regarding the GPS:
Does anyone of you know wether there is GPS Software that could pull images from google maps?
Like a "show me satellite image of my current location" - button?
I think that would be really cool, but does it already exist?
And secondly, I'm looking for a GPS - Software that runs in the background and logs the GPS coordinates in order to geotag photos from my digicam later. Any recommendations here?
Try Mapopolis...
I use Mapopolis and it works and looks great on my ETEN X500+ VGA device. I'll use it when I get the Kaiser too. The resolution will go down but I still love the program.
Mapopolis has a GPS TRAIL option that logs your trip at preset intervals (every 5 minutes, 5 miles or whatever). All you have to do then is use the Location SMS feature of WM6 with pictures attached at capture the places you want. From there, you can create a nice Trip Photo Album with coordinates or send the trip via email.
TEC
I can't really compare software as I have only used Tomtom, but I have always found the program great and have never felt tempted to even try another software package because it has always worked so well.
With my 8525 I purchased the Garmin Mobile 10 which is this awesome little gps receiver that fits in your palm. It's bluetooth and all I do is put the tiny thing in my pocket. It uses Garmin software and works amazingly well. I'm wondering whether this would be MORE accurate than the built in GPS receiver in the Kaiser. If this is more accurate then I'll keep on using it but if the 8925 works just as well then I'll probably sell the garmin.

Wow great find. The downside to this software though is it requires an internet connection to connect to google when planning routes. So, if you don't have coverage then youre going to get lost.
MDA Vario III
The Vario III will be coming with CoPilot out of the box (there are having alot of problems in the testing of this cant cant make it work) they are also having problems gettin the WiFi stay on. So all you UK users who are after the Vario III (me included) will be waiting till the start of Oct
I own "iGuidance" which works on the PocketPC .. will test it out once I have the Kaiser

Says here its coming with tom tom taster version
http://www.4winmobile.com/forums/wi...tytn-ii-europe-ultimate-mobile-companion.html
I'll be using iGuidance, as it's what I'm using now on my Hermes...
I'll be using TomTom Nav 6. It also has a satelite download but I've never used it.
I just got my TyTN II and installed iguidance 3.0.1.
It doesn't actually start most of the time. It appears to run once after a reboot but then not again.
I can see the exe in the process list but the app is not actually running. or never finishes starting.
So maybe i will give tom tom a try. LOL
Edit: Oh actually i ran it and waited 10 minutes and the program actually launched.. so there are definitely a few issues.

Actually, I'd love if someone with a Kaiser would try Mapopolis - just load the Los Angeles, USA map and see if it's usable. My Hermes dogs out completely at high zoom levels - I'm presuming due to only 64MB of memory vs the 128MB in my old iPAQ 5555. (By "dogs out" I mean drag-panning the map is extremely jerky and category searches take near to a minute!)
Mapopolis' POI management is second to none, and it's had text-to-speech for ages. TomTom v6.030 is the latest PocketPC version I've found and it still has no text-to-speech, won't allow you to add your own POIs to the canned categories, etc.

Tom Tom v6 Navigator - OK with Kaiser?

Hi All - I can see a few post about the above software. Tom Tom are saying that V6 Navigator is not officially compatible with the Kaiser. Can I assume because there are manly positive posts about it here that it DOES work OK on the device?
I'm with O2 and although they sell (and I've bought) 'Co-Pilot', I been having a few problems with it triggering the message 'the server has been reset...blah...blah...all your data needs to be resynchronised' when I try and sync the device with Outlook. The resyncing is a L-o-n-g process and it wipes out all my quick dials too - ouch!) Co-Pilot Support have confirmed it's a known problem on some devices..so I'm not looking to fix this as O2 are sending me a credit)
Thanks
I got the "o2 Stellar" yesterday and TomTom 6 works fine.. Just find which com port the GPS is assigned to in Start -> Settings -> External GPS .. Then just assign TomTom to that com port via the configuration - I used "Other NMEA GPS Receiver" but I dont think it matters which option you choose aslong as you choose the right port.
TomTom 6 works brilliantly well on my "Stellar".
Got TomTom working on my AT&T Tilt. Pick other GPS receiver, Baud 9600, COM4.
Well, seeing as HTC sell the Tytn II with a trial version of Tomtom, you would rather expect it to work!
Got tomtom v6 working perfectly fine on my tilt with duttys v3 rom. Like posted above, most likely its com 4. Initial start takes about 30 seconds but after that full blast reception.

The Tytn II ships with a "Taster" edition of TomTom 6 (version 6.032). Thus I expect TomTom support the platform
Actually I have a "Pukka" copy of the "Navigator 6 software and maps of western Europe", and have raised a few calls about the software (the version on my CD shipped with V6.010, so I asked for latest specifying my exact device, and was pointed to the "downloads" area of tomtom website (version 6.030 is there))

T-Mobile now offer Co-Pilot with its Tytn II varient (MDA Vario III)
Having had a quick "play" with a co-pilot system, it looked fancier (and has a better "Licensing" policy than tomtom) however I preferred the TomTom software (my Girlfriend has an old TomTom Go)
I have TomTom traffic and Safety camera's options purchase and find these excellent
If you can test co-pilot you might prefer it. I preferred tomtom
Always worked flawlessly on my HTC Kaiser, never messed with gps settings either
Tom Tom and Co Pilot
Thanks everyone. I'm going to purchase Tom Tom as Co Pilot caused a few serious problems on my Stellar
But you should have TomTom already if you own Kaiser device...

true... plus, there's always *other* ways of getting TOMTOM
Older version also works, but the 6.032 has "Build-in GPS receiver" option. In older you need to manually set it up as other NMEA receiver. In Poland EraGSM (soon to be T-Mobile) provide Vario III with full version of TT6 with regional maps.
I'm running TomTom that's "for the Trinity" from HTC e-club. I used the same thing on my Trinity and it auto picked up the internal, and has internal GPS setting. On my Tilt, this option is not available, but picked other, baud 9600, com 4 and it works nice and fast
tomtom 6
Hey all, been running tomtom 6.032 on my o2 Stellar with absolutly no problems at all!! It is by far the best sat nav for pocket pc. I have tried most programs out there but tomtom wins hands down for speed, stability and performance.. 10/10
I agree duncstar- have tried iGo and Navigon but TomTom is far quicker and more stable.
Out of interest, can someone calify the differences between the TomTom Taster and regular TomTom?

No its not - its not special in any way. You have to buy any of the maps you wish to use (except for the 'free' city map they give you).
I installed TomTom Navigator 6 V6.010 with 6.75 US/Canada maps into my Tilt...everything works except one feature in the point of interest. It doesn't list nearby "stores" in the Los Angeles. Only show Apple etc. stores that are in the east coast, what gives? What can I do to fix this? thanks
Thanks for help

Thanks Duncstar for your help. Especially as you're an O2 user in the UK too Thanks also to everyone else who offered advice and pointed me in the right direction. I did read some stuff about 'maps not showing up'. Duncstar - Did yours work literally 'straight out of the box'?
I have an imported Kaiser here in the US. Tom Tom works perfectly. I bought the usa/canada maps from amazon for $125. Installed it and no issues. I did have to select the gps, used 57,000 baud, com 4 and it's great.
There's also a "quick gps" application on your phone. Use it to help zero in the gps even better. It wants to run once a week.
I also bought and installed the Mr. T voice and I'm officially the biggest nerd on my block now. Turn Right Sucka!
Oh yeah, I"m not sure which version of TT6 was on my kaiser. When I installed the purchased software, it loaded up version 6.010. I had to go to tom tom's website and download the 6.030 version.

The best navigational software for the HTC Diamond

Hi all..
I want to start a threat on the best navigational software for the HTC Diamond.
This one is for the nominees the next threat will be with a poll of all nominees.
Post like me plz.
My nominees are:
1. Igo v8
2. TomTom v7
3. Sygic McGuider v7
And please post those without the 50m delay error !
Some say that the phone is not accurate and that indications and guidance are 50m late with Tom Tom and many others...

The delay is not caused by the software. It is the way they implemented GPS in the Diamond.
what's the legal status of loading TomTom 7 on a Diamond/branded handset that does not include this
I know of someone who tried to buy maps from Tomtom - and they accused him of piracy for loading the software - took his money and closed off his access to the maps he had bought online

Easy question : illegal !
TT7 is not sold by TomTom in any way except included in some devices...

That's pretty dumb to buy maps for a software acquired illegally.
To come back to the original question :
I can see only 2 real contenders : TT7 and Igo8. I found pros and cons on each one and cannot decide which one to use...
Other GPS software are far behind those two
The Tomtom software is free. The map cost.
I have both Tomtom and Igo on my TD. Igo win hands down.

Where did you see that ???????
TomTom 7 for VGA devices is sweeeeet on the Diamond. It´s lightning fast and everything looks super sharp. Installed it yesterday... great gps locks on my diamond, even indoors in seconds...
I also have both TT7 and Igo8, and I prefer Igo8. The lag on TT7 seems less though (maybe just due to the big arrow!). Igo8's UK map has directed me down a few one way streets but I really prefer the interface, it is much easier to use even as a piece of map reading software, and I find the instructions clearer, with fewer ambiguous instructions (like BEAR LEFT = TURN LEFT sometimes = go straight other times on TT7)

Wrong!! I have TomTom 7 installed, it didnt come packaged on my device, and i sourced it from TomTom.
Also you might want to read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=401679 particularly the title "TomTom 7 extracted from HTC Diamond"
If this was EXTRACTED from a HTC Diamond, it was shipped from HTC with TomTom 7 Installed!
and if you look here: http://navngo.com/pages/global/eng/news_and_press/htc_touch_eng you can read about Nav N Go WM6 compatible software
I suggest you go to both of the manufacturers websites and re-read the sections about PDA's
I -really- prefer the interface, features and visuals of IGO8 over TomTom. The problem is IGO8 has around 20M lag so I end up using TomTom.
destinator
I tried several applications in the past.
"Destinator" is the only package that works for me without problems
both on my diamond as on my other devices.
Destinator also does not have problems with all my other applications that
run in the background.
is use both Igo8 and Tomtom7. Both work fine on the diamond, except for the GPS lag (the same with Igo8 and TT7). I recently switched back from Igo8 tot TT7 because i found the screen from Igo8 too overwhelming, looks like a computergame with lots of information and colours. TT7 has more basic looks, wich on the -little (compared tot dedicated devices)- screen from the Diamond looks better. Only complaint about TT7 are the small icons for the POI's, on the Igo8 these are better visible than the TT7 ones.

I have a delay, but no more than 10m and when you're driving it really doesn't matter.
i have tried various versions of both TTN7 and IGo8, ended up sticking with IGo8, mainly because of the interface. The only thing that anoys me is not being able to put in Postcodes in the UK
anyone know a answer?

You should have read ALL my post : it's illegal IF NOT PRE-INSTALLED ON YOUR PHONE...
Its loaded on SOME Diamonds not ALL. If not present it's illegal to install it as TomTom does not provide it...
Please provide OFFICIAL info and link on how to get LEGAL TT7 when not shipped with phone to prove I'm wrong (and I would be glad to be wrong !!!!).

given the person I spoke of above - thankfully not me - no the software isn't free, or at least TomTom don't think so
AFAIK iGo is illegal on the Diamond too since it's shipped only on SD cards that will hardly be accepted by our babies.
Anyway, running fine on my XDA Diamond.
I use the Diamond for IGO8, Memory map OS and Run.GPS....
Rom. Swiftblade 7, radio 05...
Almost instant gps fix, very accurate even whilst out for a run...
Mostly used is Run.gps, then Memory map followed by IGO8 when I have to go to a meeting...

Not really - if you bought yourself iGo on SD card and ported it over, you have purchased the rights to use that software
...unless some overly pedantic legalese prohibits shifting the files from SD card to Internal Storage

TomTom Vs Garmin Vs McGuider

Hi,
I am looking to buy new GPS software for my Kaiser.
I am currently using a dodgy copy of TomTom7 that came on my second hand Kasier a few weeks ago and am so far very impressed with it.
Right now i have a shortlist of two. How do McGuider (am looking at 2009 version) and Garmin (XT version) compare to TomTom7? Should i throw Route 66 into the mix?
I never used Garmin, but I have tried Tomtom and McGuider. The main differents is that McGuider has a lot more eye candy, Really very Nice!
Whit both I had no complaints about the 'voice' and the instructions (dutch).
Only downside from Mcguider is that it is sometimes, a couple of meters, to late whit corners and the recalculation is a bit slow.....so don't drive to fast .
thank you.
Expansys are doing a £10 off deal just now so i can get McGuider 2009 European Maps for around £45 or Route 66 8 UK maps for just £25. Seeing as i have only once had a car outside of the UK in the last 5 years the euro maps are far from essential so it comes down to how good the interface/operation is and how good the UK maps are.
Anyone used Route 66 8? have read mixed reviews so was hoping some of you folks may have first hand experience with it.

Are you talking about Garmin 3D map? I've never heard about ... Is it a totally new stuff that Garmin gives?
Also, I'm running iGo8 on my Kaiser, but I used to play with both Garmin Mobile XT and Tomtom. I dont know why people prefer TT rather than Garmin, may be just people in Europe ... To me Garmin is better in North America. And one more annoying issue in Tomtom is that, to quit the program you have to go to the final page of the menu ...
Yep.....its an awesome map....work flawless
TomTom MAPUPDATES
I vote for TomTom7.910.
Downloaded TomTom Home2.5 FREE from tomtom.com
Got myself a FREE account at tomtom.com and it worked great.
Activated FREE map-updates & i've always got the latest maps (Benelux 8.15.2024 with 5000+ corrections).
Which program can compete that?
pocketgpsworld vs TomTom 7.910:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=474146
I tried TomTom 6 and Mobile Navigator 7 from Navigon.
TomTom is muuuuch easier to handle. In Navigon the buttons are so small and therefore not good to be pressed while driving. TomTom is intuitive and has the best performance in my opinion. Just don't use the biggest cards (like complete western europe) Then it will lag like hell if you browse the maps manually.
But I don't use navigation with my kaiser since my car got a tomtom one which can be used without any expensive and kaiser-specific car- or poweradapters The only bad thing with it is, that the kaiser has a better display with more lumen.
I've tried Tom Tom and Garmin, and vastly preferred TomTom. The POI database was much better and Garmin was a bit sluggish on my Tilt. The only complaint I have with TomTom is that it, if my phone is muted when it opens, there's no way to unmute without closing and reloading the program. It's also a bit ugly, but it just works too nicely to complain.
I tried iGo, but could never get the program to fully load on my system without crashing.
Garmin vs. Tom Tom
I have Garmin and have tried tom tom and I have to say I like Garmin XT BEST!! I can help you get garmin xt for free if you want, let me know.
Agreed. I've tried Garmin and TomTom7 on my TYTNII and hands down prefer Garmin. Much nicer general appearance of application, both easy to navigate and map display much nicer on the eye on Garmin. You just get that feeling and TomTom just didn't do it for me...

O2 Stellar - Garmin XT sat nav??

I have a Garmin sat nav installed on my O2 XDA Stellar that I use with the stellar paired (bluetooth) to a GlobalSat BT-338 receiver, the Garmin works fine. However, my point is, as the Steller has its own indwelling receiver why cant I use that? has anyone got over this difficulty that O2 seem to have with Garmin? I'm interested in your thoughts on the subject, thank you in advance
It is just about the license file you have for Garmin. I use my internal gps
O2 Stellar and GarminXT
thanks for the reply, I'm unsure how the license could be entered to allow the internal GPS to operate. I've had it to the O2 'Guru' in Liverpool (their word not mine) and he suggested posting here. Can you be a little more specific? thanks
