which rom? - MDA II, XDA II, 2060 Windows Mobile 6 Upgrading

ok guys can ya help me?
which rom is best for these basic uses
do i need a ram disk?
if so will tom tom run better from ramdisk?
I have tried a few of the WM6 roms and
I just cant seem to choose.
i use my xda for
tomtom
watching vids
taking pics
wireless internet
lots of calls n txt
I have a 1gb SD card with tomtom n maps on oh and loads of vids n pics
any ideas at moment running
Syed Ather's WM6 ROM for HIMA
Basic Version : 32MB RAMDisk
radio 1.17

imo all roms are good....differences between them are really not visible 4 common user...

Go for the rom which runs the applications you use most fast and stable. For many people one of the deciding factors is ramdisk and storage memory. These spaces can be used to install apps etc. Apps installed here will run(or at least load) faster than apps installed on storage card.

rom
ok think i will stick with the basic version it seems to be ok
for my use,
will try the premium version on my other xda and work my way
round all the roms and see how they run for me
cheers

Wizard Rom (extended mainly) information please (or app)

Hello. I have been experiencing massive shortages of ram on my wizard. I started reading about all the different roms, and have friends that have tried the molski 30mb free rom. I also read about some others that pack much used stuff in the extended rom. My idea was to see if I would be able to make my own extended rom packed with some of my most used apps. To figure this out, I need to know a few things..... First, how large is the extended rom? Second, When you install programs from the extended rom, they install to the rom, right? (or extended rom? unsure here). If so, how much space is left in the rom for extended rom installs?
Is there an app that will load on my wizard and tell me rom info?
Basically I want to see if I can install stuff like wisbar, maybe even resco explorer into the extended rom to save on program space while saving ram using molski's 30mb free rom. This would give me more install space (very limited on that) and more ram (checking under couch cushions for any extra lately). Any usefull information would be greatly appreciated. TIA
*bump* Even help with search terms would help?! Ive tried just about anything I can think of and only find 100 page threads about cooked roms. Anything at all might help...
*bump* 87 ppl on this forum have read thism and someone must have seen something somewhere
I also have another question to add to the queue. How do you tell if your phone is CID unlocked? I know I sim unlocked it, but am not sure if the CID unlock worked or not. TIA for your help

Read farias info, but i give u an intro: extrom is 10mb, installing something from extrom dont install in rom but in the device storage...
In any case the os free memory when he really need it automatically so i ask u a q, why do u think that u have memory outage problems?
I am low on memory (ram) and program storage memory. I installed molski's rom last night, but I am still really low on both. I have 6mb free program storage, and even after installing molski's 30mbfree rom, i have 16-20mb free ram. I have tried closing almost all of my programs, but this does not go up. I figured that if I installed a few of my most used programs in the extended rom, and they were installed to the rom (wasnt sure about this) that I would have some extra program storage memory. I am going to see if removing my today plugins helps at all, but I only have 3. Resco, and phone alarm (dont really need it now) and one that allows meto turn on bt/wifi with a single tap.
mmm...yea, i also have around 18mb and im using farias 3.2 rom (falls to around 6mb during startup, this is normal)...its normal for this kind of device...thats why i ask u why u need more memory...in any case if u try to run something that asks for more memory the chances r that the 200mhz processor r going to be another limit...example: 32mb gba roms, some car game mentioned around, (pocketquake?), etc...
and i have about 30mb free storage, but this is because i store allmost everithing in a 1gb minisd...
btw, i use batterystatus, agile and ilancher plugins...and vbar also running in background...

I tried also molski's ROM and after reboot tried get rid of extended ROM by pressing soft restart button after instalation completed(when it prompted that selfonciguration will take place after3 seconds).
After reboot I had abou 44 MB free memory in storage and about 30 MB in programs.
But this is ilusion after instalation few programs (2-3MB at all)checked memory again and it drops more then 13MB.
By reghacking registry it is possible to see extrom as "Extrom2" it is 10 MB with more than 9,8MB free space and it is not writable.
Unlocking extrom would be solution and I've tried several unlocking tools, but with zero succes so far
Thank you all for your replies. I guess I will just have to live with this as it is. I love this device and if it only had a faster cpu (like my axim x51) It would be perfect. I currently do not have many problems with it, but I would like to get it running the fastest that is possible.
Thx again.
did u tried omapclock?

Which WM6 are you using and Why?

Theres like 6 threads with like 50 pages each...and i've read almost all of them....but my question is which WM6 of crossbow are you using? So far i know theres
1. Chinese version
2. Stock leaked one
3. PDAViet 1
4. PDAViet 2
Which ones are you guys using and why? THanks for the responds guys
None, they're buggy, obviously unfinished and of dubious origin.
im using pv2...it has nice little addons to it, and it seems to be smoother...

But that's what makes them so FUN!
i totally agree with you guys. Thats what makes these roms fun. i just got tired of trying to decide which rom to mess with and all that fun crap. i just wanted to see what fellow modders were doing with their roms and what they learned and what they have accomplished. i see that on PDAViet 2 for some reason my screen keeps turning on. and sometimes my softkeys wont work. does any one by anychance have a solution to thi stuff? Thanks

Agreed.
I tried them out, but they were pretty buggy and impossible to make everything run as smoothly as WM5.
I need stability and a smooth running PPC. Not some glitchy buggy unreliable WM6.
Plus WM6 adds zero true improvements. There is just no reason to use these pre-release versions.
I hope they get WM6 fixed up correctly before actually releasing it to the public or WM6 is going to suffer a horrible fate.
Need another option: My own cooked version
I cooked up my own version, modeling it after Risidoro and Molski's, adding all the cool TSK files, camera themes, ringtones, Ris' network tools, Adobe Acrobat LE. mbutton in ROM and in startup, Total Commander in ROM, enabling the ZIP tool, added traylaunch and battery status and adding in the faria camera fix.
This is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks to Risidoro, Molski and Faria for the great tutorials. I spent hours working on this to get it working just like I want it.
Rom stats, from a fresh boot with mbutton and activesync running:

Yes. Sorry. It is the Orwell, I guess, one.
I just read about editing the HV files, so now my little cab file that I run afterward to add in MMS, GPRS, etc, will be integrated into the ROM directly, along with Midlet Manager, TRE and whatever else I can inject into it.
yeah i had to put all my internet and gprs settings my self from my other 8125. so far i like the way it looks and its running pretty good now that i took some stuff off the start up folder like tray launch and smartskey. dont really need them. i have pocketplus running just fine on there just like batterystatus and today plugin.

Can you share some experience about editing HV files? I can't find any sources for it. Thanks.
Well. Let me first say this.
Apparently what PDAViet has done to Faria's hard word and effort can simply not be justified imho.
To be honest I have PDA Viet2 installed. But that was before I read what they did with Faria's hard work. And I simply don't have time now to switch to another WM6 rom, otherwise I'd installed Faria's latest and greatest Rom 3.3.
Nevertheless I must say that the PDA Viet2 rom works fine on my MDA. Even my 4gb minisd works flawlessly (although i'm still looking for some tweaks to improve read/write performance with it). They also put some security to it with removing the windows update option (which apparently causes trouble to some users).
But, to stay loyal to Faria, just because that man really does great work, whenever there's another rom (a better one/more complete one) and I have some more time, I immediately switch to another rom.
I love WM6, on my device it runs so much more smoother than WM5 did, and after running the MMS cab patch, i'm fully sorted. All of my software work on it perfectly, it's extremely fast (i haven't even had to over clock it like i used to do at 240mhz).
I now want to really get into understanding how to tweak and create my own Roms.

Is HTC Diamond too slow??

I have decided to buy the HTC Diamond and the only thing that worries me is that this phone could be too slow (going by the various reviews on the web). I am very new to this forum and will appreciate all your feedback and advice. I am using Glofiish X500 at present (OS is WM 5.0). My usage is very much limited to internet, e-mail, text mesaging, calendar and of course making phone calls!! I am not a huge photo / video user though I have a fairly decent collection of MP3 and WMA files that I would love to listen to on my new Diamond. Also, I have a very large address book. How will I transfer my complete address book from my old Glofiish to Diamond? I assume I have to take back up of my old phone and restore this back up on my new Diamond. Am I correct here??
Contacts issue
Syn Glofish with Outlook on your pc.
Get your diamond.. Sync diamond with your outlook..
done.
1.9.3 firmware is fast...
The phone being slow... depends on what ROM you are using. There are plenty of cooked roms available on the forum to choose from. You can find them in the link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=430
if you don't want to use another rom, there are plenty of tweaks available to improve performance on your diamond. You can find these - at the link below:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=398265
Get your diamond. if you have any problems with the speed, use another rom or try the tweaks.
Thanks LordRaj and Steffan for your advice.
No , it can fly

Let's put it in this way, the device itself is very fast. Each cooked ROM is trying to optimize memory usage by finding balance between freeing resources and using additional software.
Now IF you flash the lite ROM version with minimal additional software the phone will fly.
BTW the main memory eater is nice and new Diamond 3D interface (I'm personally preferring SPB interface for speed and usability, but this is personal choice)
Cheers
Very fast
Last night i loaded the 1.93.405.1 ROM from the HTC Site and now it flies through the contacts. Make sure you dont leave all your apps running in the background this will slow it down Start - Settings - Task manager and close the ones you dont want open
Hope this helps

Slow roms with Manila 2.5 landscape

Hi everybody,
I have tested many cooked roms for Rhodium with both Manila 2.1 and Manila 2.5. I congratulate all of you very good job!
What I mentioned, that ALL roms with landscape support are extremely slow after inserting the SD card (as well as applications which must use the card work very, very slowly). This problem does not exist if you install rom with Manilla 2.5 without landscape and after that you install landscape separately (using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=588476).
This solution is not perfect. If someone of rom cookers can solve this, it will be great job.
Thanks in advance...
im having no speed issues with NRG's 28011 dec 31 build of manila 2.5...i have programs installed on my sd card and i store all my music there as well...no lag in running any of these
Which class is your SD card?
I'm not entirely sure, but I believe this has something to do with the newer 2.5 roms supporting the documents tab, which likes to scan the entire phone/card for documents.
The link you posted is a 'hack' (a brilliant one!) to achieve landscape in older 2.5 roms and is not one released by HTC. The underlying system is different, is what I'm saying.
There are cabs floating around to disable the documents tab. You could try that and see if that's your problem.
The SD has been delivered with the phone. It's 8GB ScanDisk. I have very large map file (1.5GB) and the GPS software works very slowly. Without the SD everything is OK as well as if you install Manila 2.5 w/o landscape and then you add it - it seems that it is not problem with the card.
Thank for quick answer.
hi yeah disable the documents tab i dont have a slow manila on ark rhodium rom

... but what it means for my case?
I have unchecked the box of doc tab and restart the phone. No result.
I cannot find the cab file responsible for doc tab disabling. Any help?
I have made another test: if manila is turned off, everything goes well. It seems that is the manila problem, only.
I have tested this behaviour with almost all roms with Manila 2.5 listed here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/poll.php?do=showresults&pollid=2115).
In each case the behaviour is the same: inserting SD card with enabled Manila means extremely slow performances of the phone.
I have used two various cards = the same effect.
No card nor Manila: everything is going properly...
Any ideas ...?
delete this:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\Manila\HTCService]
"DocIndexerService"="DocIndexerService.dll"
then you should be good. it is somthing to do with the doc indexer service not working with our phones.

It must be something you have installed as i use ARKs rom which is Rhodium AF and too have a 8gig card and garmin mobile installed which maps are 1.5 gig and i also have several movies and a ton of music i have no issues with anything being slow i also have the documents tab enabled and have never had a slow down issue. everything is extreemly fast my memory runs at about 58 - 60%. maybe try to flash rom and insert you card and do not install anything first to see the affect then maybe try installing programs 1 by 1 to see which maybe causing a conflict.
Additionally, I have tested roms contained Manila 2.5 landscape but without Doc Tab.
Results the same.
I think that all rom cookers use the same background of landscape support which has big problem with SD card with big files.
I hope at least someone is able to solve this issue.
Thanks for advices... I am going to try them and let you know...

Dears,
Problem is solved. I have no idea why, but problem was cased by folder named "htc" which contained my old cabs for win 6.1 (kaiser).
Thank you very much all of you for help and I am waiting for new roms...
