So,
I had an 8525, and just upgraded to 8925. After some traveling, my 8925 just up dies. I got it on the 20th of Dec, and on the 30th it dies. I switch my card back over to the 8525 on that afternoon (after not being able to start it up), and start using it. Today (02Jan08), the 8525 died as well. Both are giving me similar issues. The 8925 gives a red light when I attempt to charge, and wont turn on at all. The 8525 gives no charging indications whatsoever, and refuses to turn on as well. I'm getting worried I'm radioactive or something. Anybody got any ideas as to what would cause to phones to die similarly like this. The only new things introduced were my trip to texas. I haven't change much of anything else. Any ideas would be appreciated, as I'm completely stumped. I've tried the straight to battery "jump-off" via usb and 3 AAA batts for the 8925, and I've got nothing out of it. I even went a got a new battery. Something I'm doing (I have no clue what) is absolutely killing these phones.
Thanks,
Doug
The only think I can think of in your case that might be common is the charger. Was the same charger being used on both devices? I wonder if it was bad could it have maybe damaged the phones.
I've been running through any possible connections, and that's the only thing I can come up with. Except one of them died on the charger, the other one I was hangin out with some friends and went to check it and it was dead. I imagine the charger could have caused an issue that eventually fried the phone. The charge I'm using came straight out of the 8925 box, brand new!

Your not the only one...
Have a look at your mini USB port on the device. Is it slightly bowed??? Is tere a slight downward curvature creating a slight crescent shape to the device USB aperature?
@GSLEON3
I don't think so.
@xconradx
I have become active in that thread. Seems like a growing theme.....
@Mods
feel free to delete this one, since the other one has taken like a wildfire in california (too soon?)
I had exactly same problem when switching from 8525, after phone kept dropping I called the at&t CS they sent me some kind of a fixed code over the air, but then it went worsen. Anyway, I called them back they told me to read out the card serial# and informed me that I had the old sim card although it has 3G logo on it and suggested me to go to any at&t store to pickup the new one(one with at&t and 3G logo). It still dropped call after that but about 1/2 less until I turned off the 3G stuff then it works like charm!! Even the at&t CS said the 3G is not guaranteed in every place so to turn it off was a good idea!!
Huh?

I actually don't see how our problems are at all the same. Thanks for replying tho.
Just a though... I had dropped call problems before the red light of death happened on my phone as well. Towards the end it couldn't even find a signal.

So basiclly my g1 doesn't accept any kind of sim card at all. My sim card used to work but now it doesn't. I tried changing sims already like alotta times but still it says "NO SIM CARD" when there is one. Everything works perfectly fine except for the sim card part. My phone isn't rooted. It's pretty stock. Can Anyone help me?! Please!?
Its a common problem that is occuring since a couple of months... Im having the same problem except mine recognize my sim card from time to time and then I loose signal and the sim card problem occurs again... Nobody on the forum know what to do about it so Im clueless about it...
May be hardware, not quite sure. You might want to get another phone.
My friend had this problem after water damage - he got lucky and warranty replaced it. I would guess it's a hardware problem as well, so your best bet is a new phone or see if you still have a warranty.
Yeah it used to happen to mine too but now it doesn't recognize at all. I have no idea what to do. I love my G1...
the answer is, hit T-Mo up on your warranty..... or buy a new phone....
im on G1 number 7 or 8.... T-mo keeps shipping em out under warranty

Holy ****, bro.
its the sad truth....
but it has actually been benifical...
T-Mo's warranty policy is that you get another year warranty if the phone is replaced with a NEW phone, and if it's replaced with a Re-Furb then youi get 90 days, or the remainderof your existing warranty
my frist 3 phones were NEW replacements
and after that i got Re-Furbs
i was told this by a T-Mo warranty repair tech, on the Employee line, as i used to sell t-mo at radioshack....
also this was confirmed by checking my warranty expiration date (t-mo MUST provide this date on your request) as it MUCH later than 1 year from my first purchase....

I see how that could work out... I would just be so pissy having to wait for a new phone over and over. Unless they replace it on spot.
well with the risk of continued thread jacking, T-Mo cross ships replacements, as in you get the newone before you have to resend the old one...
you have 7 days from the date your new phone activates on their network to return the phone, just has to be postmarked by that date (scanned into UPS's system)...
plus if your phone is totally BORKED, you can request a loaner from a local store while you wait the one or 2 days it takes for the replacement to arrive
also at this point i'll probably ***** and moan next time it breaks and try to get a free MT3G slide outta em on my next replacement..... they tried to give me a Dash 3G last time, and i told em to shove it...... (i want a damn HTC android phone, with a keyboard,1Ghz+ preferably, but if its free i'll take the upg to a MT3G Slide, no contract extension ofcourse )
[Q] Same problem, SIM recognition is sketchy
I've recently been having the same problem...
The phone, HTC Dream (EBI1) from Rogers, sometimes recognizes my perfectly functional SIM card, and most other times does not. This has been happening for a while now, and usually a reboot or two would solve the problem, but now it seems like it has finally quit (I've been rebooting/powering off/battery pulling for the last 2 hours, and removing and inserting the SIM card). I've changed ROMs, (well between different versions of CyanogenMod but it worked fine with it before) and nothing.
The strange part is, after rebooting 10 to 30 times and it actually recognizes the SIM card, if the device is left on, it will continue to recognize the card... I live in an area of s*** reception, and frequently go in and out of service, I've enabled disabled 3G, WiFi on/off, and it will still work for days, UNLESS the radio is turned off for whatever reason (Airplane mode, or power off/reboot).
Basically my only hope is to pray to the G1 Gods that it'll recognize my SIM card, and if it does, then do not loose power for any reason...
If anyone has any info what so ever, please let me know.
Also, If anyone knows how to get a log of everything that happens from boot, I'd love to know how.
My phone is the HTC Dream (EBI1) from Rogers, currently running: CyanogenMod 5.0.7 test2
Danger SPL
RA Recovery 1.7.0R
HBOOT-1.33.2005 (DREA21000)
RADIO-3.22.26.17
Possible temporary FIX!
Okay, so as my last post states, my phone will sometimes recognize my SIM card after a bunch of rebooting... I've been rebooting a lot today (3 hours straight almost, with no success) and my battery was getting pretty low, which reminded me that usually when it starts working again is in the morning... weird I know...
I would turn off my phone over night and usually in the morning, within a couple boots, it'll work again, which led me to think, maybe for some reason, when the phone is too warm, it won't boot the radio properly or something strange...
Either way, I put my phone in the freezer for 10 minutes, took it out and booted it, WORKS!!!
Also, the battery was just about out, and the cold shortened it even more, it died, I plugged it in and booted again, STILL WORKS!!!
If anyone else has this "No SIM card" message, even though the SIM is good, try turning it off, sticking it in the freezer for 5-10 minutes and then boot... it's worth a try...
Like I said in the previous post, once it works, don't power down, so next time I run out of battery, I'm going to try putting it in the freezer while it's on to see if it fixes while running...
I know this sounds dumb, but it does make a little sense. I just can't figure out why it will keep working under all conditions as long as it has power to it?!?

You know this actually sounds like a hardware problem. Or possibly an issue with the sim card. Try going to your local carrier and ask for a new sim card. T-Mobile US charges $20 I believe. I had this issue and a new sim card solved everything. If the new sim card doesn't solve the problem then it's definitely hardware related. And if it's hardware related it MIGHT be why you're getting bad reception. It's a long shot I know but I certainly wouldn't recommend anyone putting their phone in a wet freezer! Anyone that does consider this I suggest placing it in an air tight container to keep it from getting wet. We don't want your leaking quart of vanilla ice cream messing up your phone.
Solved!!
Hi, buddy!
I have a samsung captivate and I was having the same trouble.
I'm brazilian and my sister send me the phone unlocked from US.
It was working for 5 months.
When I changed the SIM it has began asking me for the code(??!). It was programed for not asking PIN code so I got surprised. I typed my code several times until get the phone locked.
I spent more than 2 weeks to find the solution: Galaxy S Unlock, a free program available at the Market. It's necessary to root and install Busy Box (I installed mine with Titanium Backup).
Try something close to this for your device!
I hope this can be usefull!
i had my phone in my pocket.. and it just got extremely hot so i checked on it and it was syncing so i was like whatever.. then i get a call. then it instantly dropped. and i was not getting no signal at all.. popped the battery out put it back in..
wave secure locked my phone down gladly remembered my password was 123456 after 15 tries. then it said my simcard cant be read... popped it out and put it in my iphone. same ish.. had to go out and buy a new simcard...
called tmobile up, customer service call dropped like 8 times soon as i finish saying that long ass number on the simcard
so im guessing the heat may be a real problem
ehm.. i have this issue with NOkia phone before. I always feel hot on the skin
near the pocket and everytime i see my skin whEre the handphone rest, it always burnt and from there i realized that constantly opening my wireless is not a good idea. I am not sure if it happened to you due to same thing.
Also i realized some rom is overclock and generated the heat too much which i think might not do your phone good in the long run.
Anyway, this is just my idea.
.......wat
Sounds more like your SIM-card failed than that your phone actually fried it.
Do you use a case?
Wow, sounds like some program was preventing your phone from sleeping, or a runaway process running the CPU constantly. The phone should NEVER get got if you aren't using it for anything.
Could also be a bad sim triggered something that kept trying to access it too, so that could have been what kept your phone running enough to heat up.
Call google, they got good support.
Although if you're rooted and reflashed.. they will say its ur ROM/kernel that does that.
Today I went to the AT&T store to complain about the GPS issues on the Captivate. The associate (after looking the device over), gave me a flier/form and told me to take the phone to the local AT&T warranty center. The flier seems to indicate that the warranty center folks would either fix the issue or replace the device if they agree that my phone has an issue and is not (water) damaged etc.
Anybody have any experience with this?
I don't have any experience while owning a Captivate and going to the Warranty Center...
But when I had my Samsung Impression, and the phone display (it was a touchscreen with a slideout keyboard) completely stopped working, it wouldn't register any touch at all, I took it to them, they turned it on, tested that it truly didn't work, and they gave me a new phone (might have been refurbished) on the spot. Walked out with a smile on my face and went on with my day.
Same experience with two LG Xenons with bubbles under the screen. On the spot replacement within 10 minutes after they verified that the moisture sensor was clear.

Refurbished phones are the replacement. Very easy to deal with.
I had the same thing with my wife's Bold - warranty center didn't really try to fix it, just did the replacement. You have to make sure to do the data wipe before the exchange, and they can't do much in terms of data transfer. Process itself is very quick and straight-forward.
For my captivate GPS I just did a mail replacement. Gives me the time to swap everything at home with no pressure.
Funny you should ask. I'm currently dealing with a warranty exchange via phone and mail. I called customer support and told them about the random shutdown issue. They transferred me to the "Android" department. The Android department has heard about this so-called random shutdown issue so they sent me a replacement (refurb) phone after asking me questions like "Has your phone ever been dropped?" "Are there any damages to the screen?" "There is a square sticker right next to the 3 golden battery connector prongs. What color is it?" (FYI. If your phone gets wet, that white square will turn to a different color! Mine is still white. Never been in water. Anyway...)
They sent me the phone yesterday and today I turned it on. There was a new problem. It randomly takes me back to the Home screen when I'm just casually browsing the web, flipping through my apps, etc. It doesn't force close the app or system that I'm on. I just boots me out of whatever I'm doing and shows me the Home screen. So, I called to tell them about this problem. It is now in a box that it originally came in and it's waiting to be shipped out. They will give me another Captivate in the mail by Friday.

The Warranty Repair Center in my town doesn't stock Captivates. They'll take a look at the phone to see if it was damaged or submerged, then tell you to call the 800 number. Or, you can skip driving in to a warranty center and just call the 800 number. The people there will talk you through some basic troubleshooting, then ship you a replacement (ground is standard, you can pay for an upgrade to overnight). You have 10 days after that to return your phone.
As for your GPS problems.... if you've upgraded to JH7 and can get a solid lock out in the open under a clear sky, well... Sorry to disappoint, but your replacement phone is probably going to have just as many problems with the GPS. I do (and I'm on my 4th Captivate), so do 7 of my friends and coworkers who have Captivates, and so do about 90% or more of the people reporting on the forums.
According to AT&T and Samsung, the JH7 update 'addressed the GPS issues'. And it did make it better... Before, it would just about never lock on. Now I can usually get a lock within 10~20 seconds and it'll show me where I should be.... until I go for a drive.
The test is this: install My Tracks and go for a drive around town. Once you're done, take a look at your track.
If you've got a softtop convertable or a fiberglass roof, you're good.
If you've got the phone far forward on the dash and have a large, steeply raked windshield, you're good.
If you've got a large sunroof, you might be good.
Otherwise, you're stuck with a measured 50m~100m accuracy (it reports 15m~30m, but don't believe it) if you can even maintain lock.
Good luck!

Very easy to deal with IMO. I am on my 3rd captivate.
1st one experienced random shutdowns, 2 days later received second one in mail and wouldn't get any network signal, 2 days later my 3rd and hopefully last captivate was on my doorstep.
All you have to do is send in your old unit. I was satisfied with the android people over at ATT.
Dealing with AT&T is MUCH more pleasant then dealing with Samsung for your warranty support. They're quick, they're nice, and they get you in and out in about 30 minutes.

Yeah, I don't think it's that. It wasn't just on the Browser. It was also doing it while I was just flipping through the apps or reading an email using the stock email, or SMS, or looking at Settings. Anything I was on, it booted me out and took me to the Home screen. I returned it. I'm getting my 5th Cap today.
Thanks for all the replies. I'll post my experience if it turns out to be any special or interesting.
One other question. My phone is currently rooted. Should I spend effort unrooting it or it should be fine?
Unroot it and/or flash it back to original JF6 using ODIN One-click. If you've installed Froyo, do a Master Reset so it'll delete traces of 2.2 folders and whatnot. Backup first!
Pleasant experience
I went to the AT&T warranty center last weekend and was in and out of the store in less than 10 minutes with a new Captivate in hand. It was an extremely pleasant experience.
Just want to say that this replacement device (new and not refurbished) locks the GPS in about 10 sec inside the car and even faster under the sky and remains spot on. This leads me to believe that it may be some batches of device with buggy hardware with GPS issues.
Thanks

When I asked specifically whether the device was refurbished, I was told that it was new unit, as the refurb units have some red sticker on the device (when you take the battery out). Either way it does not matter to me as this unit works perfectly including the GPS.

Looks like you were lied to.
Unless if you were still under your 30 days, which would put you under the buyer's remorse program [completely apart from Warranty], then you'd be receiving a new model.
+ most Warranty Captivates are affected by the random shutdown issue, as they aren't scrapped if they're under the affected IMEI range.
You're using a refurbished Captivate, all in all.
My first phone was rooted and then the random crashes started. It got so bad I couldnt turn the phone on unless I did a battery pull then with the charger plugged in and finger banging and milking a cow at the same time.
I finally got it into download mode and went back to stock. I went to the tech center explained what happened and she replaced it right on the spot and gave me a NEW phone, battery and charger. BUT she gave me my old battery cover. :-(
Sent from my Captivate.
I bought 2 Herod with CDMA about 18months ago.
Each day I have differenet problem but I don't want to talk about that.
2 days ago both phones sratrted to break voice while calling and even while connecting.
We wern't be able to talk because people heard us good but we couldn't understand even 10% of words.
I called Sprint(my phone carrier) customer service and I spent 3 hrs on telling what's my problem.
As usual it ended up on that they see no problems with my service and told me to check phone in the store.
I already did that procedure more than 5 times, spending more than 200hrs on talking with CS, driving to store and replacing both phones 4 times. Nothing ever changed so we just think that we try to live with those problems until contract ends.
But this is too much.
We both have rooted phones and installed CyjanogenMod7. It was working better but all problems stayed.
So.... now...
Lady on the phone updated our phones/profiles and since that moment both phones died.. literally died. That exactly happened half day later when I wwas at work. Both phones always act the same(weird right?)
So now they act in 4 ways(randomly)
1)phones are dead, I can't turn it on. Removing battery doesn't help
2)phones can be turned on. I see HTC logo and nothing else
3)phones can be turned on but they constantly restart themselves after showing HTC logo for 5-10sec
4)finally phones can be turned on but I have no connectivity, no internet, no bars and big sign "searching for signal"
BTW I have signal in my house, it's not like I moved to North Pole or something.
Usually my phone is dead and the best part is that even I finally turn it on...somehow then it's going to turn off after few minutes and I will never see signal(super weird).
It all started to happen after updating your profiles and phones but you can call me crazy but I got a feeling that they "broke" our phones wirelessly because I asked really bad for corporate number and for waiving my cancellation fees because I just have enough. That is the most... the worst company and phone ever.
Please help me. Maybe there is something I can do.
probably not much help here but try to update profile and prl again from stock sense 2.1 rom
no service/connectivity/signal sounds like a bad radio flash, try to update your radio to the latest sprint offering, if nothing else works a ##786# reset saved me one day from a bad pri, good luck and i hope you figure out whats wrong
My phone doesn't want to turn on from 3hrs(didn't happen yet) and I can't charge it. That is the end...
I'm goingf tomorrow to pay all fees and get new phones and plans in different carrier.
I couldn't run it yesterday anymore. But today it finally turned on and I'm charging it(17%). What is the quickest mnethod to install stock rom? Can you give me some links?
sorry for the late posting, but here you go:
http://support.sprint.com/support/a...e-gb746811-20091009-155624?&INTNAV=SU:DP:HDIA
read through that and you should be able to get back to complete stock
hope that helps some, and good luck
I have looked over this site and have gotten tons of useful information for when I was rooting and flashing my daughters Nook tablet. Which is running a fairly good Liquid smooth rom currently. I finally decided to join because my girlfriends LG G2 got the dreaded phantom touches, dead spot issue. Well since she didn't want to deal with sending it in to LG she jumped ship and purchased an S5. Which she loves more than the G2. So I got the busted LG G2 .
Since I have a current phone to use I decided to send the G2 to LG for a warranty repair. So hopefully I get back a minty fresh 100% working G2 soon. I will be using a Straight Talk Sim running on ATT towers. I verified it worked in the broken G2 before shipping it off. I was able to send/receive texts and get data. No LTE though but that is fine. I pulled about 7mbps on speedtest which is more than I need. I'm coming from an apple Iphone4. Yes just a 4 and I've had this phone forever now. Can't wait to get rid of it. So even a G2 without LTE is a huge step up. I thought about swapping the VZW for an ATT branded one but ultimately decided the wireless charging was better for me than LTE speeds.
Now for my questions. The original warranty is up in October. Is anyone that is getting a warranty repaired phone have the dead spot issue again? Am I only covered until October on the warranty replacement or does it extend in anyway? I like the phone, except all the VZW BS on it but that can be fixed at a later date.
figured I would update this. I finally got the phone and everything works as it should. I received the same phone back fixed it seems. Only thing is now I can see the digitizer more. I couldn't notice it too much before but it's clear as day now. But small price to pay for a working screen.
I popped in my sim card and setup the apn and even configured it so tethering would work. I had to add something to the apn to get it to work. I don't tether actually but we just went on a long trip and needed it for a quick few seconds so we could send and receive emails on the laptop.
Only issues is the VZW phone had way too much bloat and I would constantly get errors from the VZW apps because I wasn't on their network. So within a day I had to root it and flash the cloudy g3 rom. I must say I love it much more now.
My issues thus far is the battery doesn't seem that great. My old iphone4 held as much of a charge on a 4 year old battery half the size. But maybe that's because I have been playing with this phone alot more. Other thing is the service fluctuates like crazy. I go from 1 bar to full bars back to 1, to 3 etc. I don't hardly ever lose service and I've yet to drop a call but sometimes get a network error.
Back to the calls, I must say it is not very pleasant sounding. The people don't ever complain about the way I sound but other peoples voices coming through my phone sound almost muffled. Definitely not as clear as my old phone. I will have to look into this more. Maybe there is a setting or some way to tweak the sound.

I'd try a stock rom and just debloat it just to rule out the signal and voice call issues. There are some already debloated ones in the Dev section here.

Thanks I will try that out. I hope this isn't the case though because I enjoy the look and feel of the g3 rom over the g2. Even if it was the rom I might live with the poor voice as I don't talk too much on the phone and it's still usable as it is.
